Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Nobody expects a natural disaster to strike.Neither does anyone know the impact it can have on life. The following measures can save your life in an emergency.
Typhoon
Typhoons occur in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, particularly in exposed regions like the Caroline Islands, the Philippines, and Japan. The best place to hide during a typhoon is a secure basement or a bathroom with no windows.A must-have device is a battery-powered weather radio, through which you will hear evacuation orders or in other cases, instructions on how to survive in your shelter and learn about the weather situation.
Flood
Floods occur more often than any other natural disaster and change the landscape dramatically. They are usually caused by intense rainfalls lasting for days.Don't try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house.Once you hear the evacuation warning, leave for safer higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container.
Avalanche (雪崩)
An avalanche can hit when you are enjoying Alpine skiing in a dreamlike location. It is very fast and disastrous, burying everything in its way under tons of snow. When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can.If you get buried in the snow, dig an air pocket to be able to keep breathing.Wait for the rescue team to find you and don't waste your energy shouting or digging frantically.Call out when you hear the team approaching.
Wildfire
Wildfires spread at an amazing speed and destroy everything in their way.If you are caught in a wildfire, use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth to ensure that you can breathe.Try to stay upwind of the fire at all times and get close to a pond or river.Stay low and cover yourself with wet clothing, a blanket, or soil until the fire passes.

Living on the Florida Emerald Coast, people view a hurricane as a common thing. So it is not unusual for a family to have several full gas cans and bottled water stored in their houses all summer.
Though unwilling to evacuate from a hurricane,on September 15, my family was forced to leave our home for my grandfather's house several miles away.We spent the early part of that evening watching the hurricane draw closer on the Weather Channel.Around nine o'clock, a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried it off.Soon came an indoor rainstorm.
Realizing the damage, my grandfather began to be afraid. The storm had started, but he still ran out into the heavy rain and wind to see how much of the roof was left.We got him back inside.I had never seen him so scared.Mom finally asked him to lie down in his room.
The leak had progressed rapidly. It soon became a race against time to protect what was saved. Some people may think it necessary to save material things, but I hoped to save those items with emotional value, such as the photos.I still feared the storm, but I more feared the influence it brought.
The next morning, it started to clear up.Thankfully, my family weathered the storm, though the same could not be said for the house.Only the wooden beams remained, but inside many of his things were safe.My mom and I had worked tirelessly through the night.
It was late, but we were still unwilling to go to bed.We discussed the rebuilding of the house.Under the beautiful sky, we suggested looking after my grandfather more often in the future. After this disaster, I realized the truth that the hurricane itself was not so terrible if we loved each other.

Friday night tornadoes hit the Midwest of Nebraska, causing a building to fall down with dozens of people inside and destroying and damaging hundreds of homes.
By Saturday morning, the sounds of chain saws filled the air in the Elkhorn neighborhood of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people.Broken furniture from the damaged homes lay in piles.Fences (篱笆) were knocked over and trees were blown down to the ground.
“We could hear it coming through,” said Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn.“When we came up, our fence was gone and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood's gone.” Omaha Police Lt.Neal Bonacci said that the Fire Department had completed its search of damaged homes and structures on Saturday. He described the injuries as slight.“You definitely see the path of the tornado,” he said.
“People had warnings of this and that saved lives,” Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said. The tornado warning was issued in the Omaha area on Friday afternoon just as children were due to be released from school. Many schools had students shelter in place until the storm passed.
People are not encouraged to go to the damaged areas just for entertainment, as it will cause traffic jams and may slow emergency vehicles.Meanwhile, Nebraska Gov.Jim Pillen posted on the Internet that he had ordered state resources to be made available to help.“Nebraskans are no strangers to pretty bad weather, and, as they have many times before, Nebraskans will help Nebraskans to rebuild,” Pillen said.
The storm caused 78 potential (潜在的) tornadoes. The National Weather Service had not yet confirmed their strength. But the Omaha office said that some of the damage seem to have been caused by a strong tornado with peak winds of 150 mph.
One of the tornadoes hit an industrial building to the west of Omaha, in Nebraska's Lancaster County, causing it to fall down with 70 people inside.Several were trapped, but everyone was evacuated and the three injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.
