Which animals are smart? You may first think of dogs because they can help people a lot. There is one more animal that is also clever: sheep. Scientists said that people could train sheep to identify (识别) familiar human faces.
Before the test, scientists showed the sheep the pictures of four famous people. Then the sheep went into a room with two computer screens. Each screen showed a human face. One screen showed one of the four famous people and the other screen showed a random (随机的) person. The sheep always walked towards the screen with the famous person’s face.
After discovering the sheep’s ability to recognise famous people, scientists gave them a new task. They wanted to see if the sheep could correctly recognise the same people from different angles (角度). The result showed that the sheep could, though they were a bit slower than before. Finally, the scientists wanted to know if the sheep could recognise the photos of their trainers. Without any training, the sheep could identify their trainers easily.
The scientists said it might be interesting in the future to find whether sheep can identify different facial expressions or not.

Have you ever seen a bee fly busily? Do you think the bee is just flying around? In fact, the bee is hard at work.
Bees spend lots of time looking for food. However, not all the bees in the hive (蜂巢) have work. Bees can be divided into three kinds—a queen bee, drones (雄蜂), and worker bees. The queen bee is very important. She is the mother of all the bees that live in the hive. Worker bees do all the other work in the hive. Besides looking for food, they make and clean the hive. They also look after the queen and protect her.
Bees make dance-like movements to send messages about food. They use different movements to give different information. They tell where food can be found and how far it is from the hive. Bees can even share how much food there is and how good it is. And surprisingly, a new study found that a group of bees could generate an amazing amount of electricity by beating their wings more than 200 times per second and the amount of electricity could reach 100 to 1,000 V.
Scientists found that the thicker a swarm of bees is, the more electricity it generates. Based on these findings, the team recorded that bees — which group together to form a huge, thick swarm of bees—could have an influence similar to that of a storm. Further research is needed to find out how electricity influences the bees and their environment.
1.What do worker bees need to do?
①Make the hive. ②Look for food. ③Take care of the queen. ④Protect drones.
A.①②④ B.①②③ C.②③④ D.①③④
2.What does the underlined word “generate” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Cost. B.Spread. C.Change. D.Produce.

C.The Secrets of Bees D.The Beauty of Nature
Everyone knows how to find the age of a fallen tree. We count the number of rings on the tree’s stump. A scientist has found a new way to measure the age of people—get them to stand on one leg.
Dr Kenton Kaufman from the Mayo Clinic in the USA said standing on one leg shows how well a person can balance (平衡). He said balance becomes more difficult as we age. Dr Kaufman added: “Balance is an important measure because, in addition to muscle strength, it requires input from vision, the [hearing] system, and the [senses].” He added: “Good balance provides the ability to carry out activities of daily living without the fear of falling, and this leads to improved quality of life and healthy ageing.”
Forty people over the age of 50 took part in the research. They did tests for walking, balance, grip (控制), and knee strength. Each participant (参与者) had to balance on their dominant (优势的) and non-dominant leg for 30 seconds. They did this with their eyes closed, and again with their eyes open.
Kaufman found that standing on the non-dominant leg showed the highest rate of decline (下降) with age. There was a 2.2-second-per-decade (每十年) decline when participants stood on their non-dominant leg. This compared to 1.7 seconds for the dominant leg. Kaufman concluded: “Standing on one leg is a good measure of your overall health because balance reflects how the body’s systems are working together.”
1.What do we all know how to find the age of?
A.All trees. B.Each other. C.A fallen tree. D.Apple trees.
2.When does balancing on one leg become more difficult?
A.After exercising. B.After eating. C.After waking up. D.As we age.
3.What does good balance mean we do not need to be afraid of?
A.Failing. B.Falling. C.Feeling. D.Freeing.
4.What things does good balance show are working together?
A.Patients and doctors. B.People. C.Our legs. D.The body’s systems.
Thanks to Earth, we have fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy. But it seems that we may think these things are normal and not realize that our planet is getting “sick”.
Among all the environmental problems, climate change sits at the top. Global average (平均的) temperatures have risen by more than 0.5℃ since 1992. A half-degree temperature rise is a big thing. It means that heat waves can last around one third longer and rainstorms will be about one third stronger. The increase in sea levels will be much higher, according to NASA.Countries like Singapore that are at low places may be covered by the ocean in the future.
But this is not the only problem people are facing. It’s getting harder to get fresh water. Ocean pollution has become serious. Since 1992, the human population has grown by 2 billion, while the populations of all other animals have fallen by nearly 30 percent.
Scientists say that we are experiencing the sixth huge dying out in history. More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年) if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund. The Amur leopard, black rhino and Cross River gorilla are some animals that are in danger of dying out completely.
However, we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone layer (臭氧层) smaller. That’s because we gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone.
This shows that when we make quick and strong decisions, we can make positive changes.
1.What may happen if global average temperatures rise by 0.5℃?
A.The ocean will cover high places like Singapore. B.Heat waves can’t last one third longer.
C.Sea levels will be three times higher. D.Rainstorms will be more serious.
2.Which of the following environmental problems are mentioned in the text?
①Air pollution. ②Ocean pollution. ③Fewer animals. ④Smaller ozone layer.
A.①② B.②④ C.①③ D.②③
3.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.How to protect the earth. B.The balance between humans and nature.
C.The sick planet D.Challenges we face in the modern world
Can people fall in love with AI voices?
OpenAI, the company that owns ChatGPT, is worried that people may become emotionally (情感上) dependent on artificial intelligence (人工智能) voices.
The company released a new “advanced voice mode” to users last week. The chatbot comes equipped (装备) with an array of lifelike voices that are almost indistinguishable (无法分辨的) from human voices. They can have an authentic (真实的) conversation in real time, laugh at the right time, interject (插话) with “umms”, “aahs” and “hmms”, and they can adjust (调整) to being interrupted (打断).
An OpenAI report states that the newly-released, human-sounding voices may lead people to rely on AI for companionship (陪伴), and even for romance and love. It cautioned (警告):“Users might form social relationships with the AI, reducing their need for human interaction (互动).”
The OpenAI report warns that future chatbots could fundamentally (从根本上) change societies. They will reshape (重塑) how we interact (交流) with family, friends and colleagues (同事). They may even usurp (篡夺) communication among humans.
The report points to benefits of the new tool. These include bringing comfort and friendship to lonely people, and giving confidence to those who lack self-confidence. The report says people may gain enough confidence to start dating (约会) in the real world.
On the flip side (另一方面), chatbots could cause people to be ruder, more impatient and more selfish. Wired. com writes that the new chatbot includes “the potential (潜在的)…to amplify (放大) societal biases (偏见), spread disinformation (虚假信息), and aid in the development of chemical or biological weapons (武器)”.
1.What might people become emotionally dependent on?
A.Family. B.Each other. C.Artificial intelligence voices. D.Themselves.
2.What is the new chatbot almost indistinguishable from?
A.Human voices. B.The old one.

3.What does the new chatbot interject with during the conversation?
A.Erms, aahs and hmms. B.Umms, aahs and hmms.
C.Umms, aahs and hymns. D.Umms, aargghs and hmms.
4.What might the chatbot spread?
A.Disinformation. B.Lies. C.Propaganda. D.Fake news.
Some people like watching horror (恐怖) movies, even though the films scare them so much that they end up screaming (尖叫). Why do some people love scary things? A group of scientists at the University of Pittsburgh in the US found that fear can sometimes be good for us. It can raise our mood and help us become more confident.
In their study, 262 volunteers went into a haunted house attraction (鬼屋景点). They stayed there for 35 minutes and came across many scary things. Both before and after the experience, they reported how they were feeling.
The results showed that most of the volunteers felt happier and less anxious after the experience. This has to do with dopamine (多巴胺), something that the brain produces. It makes people feel excited, and this effect can last even after the danger has passed, according to National Geographic.
What’s more, being scared in a safe place could be a good way to boost (增强) our confidence, explained Margee Kerr, one of the study’s authors (作者). It made the volunteers feel confident so that they could handle (应对) a scary situation in real life. It helped them deal with the fears we all have.
More than that, fear helps create strong social bonds (纽带). In scary situations, people are more likely to feel unsure about the future. As a result, they stick together and depend more on each other for support. Scientists call this a “tend-and-befriend system”. It means in scary situations, people help their friends and make new ones, which makes them feel better and more protected. A good example of this is soldiers (士兵) who fight side by side in war (战争).
1.What is the study mainly about?
A.The personality of horror movie lovers. B.The positive effects of fear on people.
C.Some effective ways to deal with fear. D.Some tips to get rid of stress.
2.What did the researchers find out from their study?
A.People can feel excited when they are scared.
B.Many people find it hard to be scared.

3.What is Margee Kerr’s opinion?
A.We should depend on ourselves when we’re afraid.
B.Being scared brings both harm and benefits.
C.Watching horror movies in a safe place makes people confident.
D.People won’t be scared if they often watch horror movies.
4.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Horror movies are sometimes educational. B.Scary situations help people become smarter.
C.Many people enjoy feeling unsure. D.Fear helps bring people together.

These days, an American vlogger has become very popular in China. Through his videos recording daily life in China, he has gained millions of followers. This speed is even faster than a ride on a high-speed rail.
At the same time, China also extended the foreigners’ visa-free stay to 144 hours, pushing this “China Travel” craze to a new height.
Many vloggers came to China with the old impressions of China from 20 years ago. But as soon as they landed, they were shocked to see a completely different China: “Is this really the same place as I thought?”
It is clear that these foreign vloggers bring more than just cameras. Through their lenses, China is full of surprises. for example, in Chongqing, “the craziest city in China”, you might see a sweaty vlogger staring at his phone, completely lost in the “3D maze (迷宫)”. After watching these videos, foreign viewers couldn’t wait for it anymore! They grabbed their backpacks and began a “trip without planning”.
Foreign vloggers’ China travel is actually a “two-way” journey. They set foot on this land with curiosity, and then they are deeply shocked by the great changes taking place in China.

【答案】1.C 2.D 3.B 4.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍科学家发现单腿站立可衡量人的年龄,平衡能力随年龄衰退,其反映身体系统的协同运作。

2.第二段明确指出“He said balance becomes more difficult as we age”,直接说明随着我们年龄增长,单腿保持平衡会变得更困难。
3.第二段明确提到:“Good balance provides the ability to carry out activities of daily living without the fear of falling”,直接说明良好的平衡能力意味着不必害怕摔倒。
4.最后一段明确指出:“balance reflects how the body’s systems are working together”,直接说明良好的平衡能力表明身体的各个系统在协同运作。
C.The sick planet D.Challenges we face in the modern world
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.A 4.C

3.文章第一段讲述了介绍了我们的星球正在“生病”;第二段到第四段介绍了地球出现的问题;第五段介绍人类在保护环境上取得了一些进展;第六段总结全文。所以文章结构如A选项所示。
4.文章开头就点出our planet is getting “sick”,全文围绕地球的环境问题展开,C项The sick planet“病态的星球”这个标题贴合主旨。
