Zhang Yao What I want to change about myself most is my attitude toward life. Sometimes, I take things too seriously. Once, I thought I did badly in an exam. I became very sad and lost confidence in any other exam. It turned out it was not as bad as I thought. I wish I could be happier about everything!
Li Jing I want to change my bad temper most. I get angry too easily, and hurt the people I love. For example, when my mom cares about me, I often complain she talks too much. Sometimes, I even fight with her. But deep down, I know she loves me a lot. I shouldn’t behave like that. I really want to work on my temper and be kinder to the people I love.
Wang Di The only thing I am not pleased with about myself is my teeth. My front teeth are so big that they almost look like buck teeth (龅牙). When I take photos, I avoid giving big smiles. I am also afraid that my classmates will laugh at me. If I had smaller teeth like other people, I would be very happy.
1.Who gets the most likes?
A.Patrick Williams. B.Zhang Yao. C.Li Jing. D.Wang Di.
2.What is Li Jing’s problem?
A.She gets along well with her mother. B.She is afraid of fighting with others.

Do-it-yourself crystal
You can grow crystals (晶体) using bicarbonate of soda (小苏打). The experiment shows you how.
1. Fill two jars with hot water. Stir about six teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda into each jar. Keep adding more bicarbonate of soda until no more will dissolve.
2. Put the jars in a warm place with a plate in between them. Make sure they won’t get moved.
3. Cut a piece of wool as long as your arm. Tie a paperclip (回形针) to each end of it, and place one end in each jar.
4. Leave the jars for at least a week. Crystals should grow gradually along the wool, and hang down over the plate.
What’s happening?
Bicarbonate of soda is usually sold as a powder (粉末) made up of tiny crystals. The powder dissolves in water, which means the powder becomes mixed with water and disappears. The mixture of water and soda is soaked up (吸收) by the wool that ties the jars together. The water then evaporates (蒸发) slowly, leaving behind pure bicarbonate of soda—which reforms into big crystals.
1.In this experiment, you may need some containers (容器) like ________.
①two jars ②a plate ③a piece of wool ④a paperclip
A.①③ B.②④ C.①② D.③④
2.One end of the wool is placed in each jar so as to ________ the mixture.
A.soak up B.leave behind C.cool down D.hang down
3.After reading the passage, we can learn that ________.
A.only six teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda are needed
B.two jars should be put in a cool place with a plate in between them
C.leave the jars for at least seven days, then you may see the crystals
D.no crystals may hang down over the plate because they have disappeared
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.C
2.定位到原文实验原理部分“The mixture of water and soda is soaked up by the wool tied the jars together.”

Tom
Hi guys! International exchange visits for teenage students are getting popular all over the world. I’m a middle school student and I am considering joining a short exchange program. Some people say exchange visits are great for teens, but others say they have many problems. I’m really not sure. Are the good sides better than the bad ones? I really need your advice!
Sara
I think exchange visits have clear disadvantages. First, many young students face culture shock in a new country. They feel uncomfortable with the new customs and lifestyles. Also, without parents nearby, many students feel lonely and homesick. This can even make their schoolwork worse. What’s more, exchange visits cost a lot. Most families cannot afford them.
Sam
I don’t agree. The advantages are far more meaningful. Immersion in a native language environment is very useful for teenagers. You stay, study and talk with local people every day. You have to use the foreign language in real life all the time. This helps you improve foreign language skills much faster than only studying in class. First-hand cultural experience also broadens your horizons and lets you learn more about the world. At the same time, living with host families and local students makes you more independent. You can learn how to talk with others and solve small problems by yourself.
Tom
Thanks so much for your valuable advice! Now I believe exchange visits are a good experience for teenagers. There are possible challenges, but if you prepare well, you can grow a lot. I just heard an example that can show this. 15-year-old Lin Xi had a 4-month exchange in Toronto in 2024. At first, she missed home a lot and found English difficult. But later, she became more independent and learned to see the world in a new way. That’s exactly what I mean.
1.What is Tom’s main problem?
A.His parents won’t let him study abroad alone.
B.He worries he is too young for exchange programs.
C.He can’t decide if he should join the exchange visit.
D.He doesn’t know how to organize an exchange program.
2.Which of the following is a possible challenge in international exchange visits?
A.They can become more independent.
B.They may miss their home and parents.
C.They know nothing about local culture.
D.They must work to make much money.
3.What does the underlined word “Immersion” mean?
A.Good memory of vocabulary.
B.Full use of the foreign language.
C.Quick learning in the classroom.
D.Smart ways to solve problems.
4.Why does Tom mention Lin Xi’s story?
A.To tell others about his own experience.
B.To express his worry about Lin Xi’s life.
C.To show teens can grow from exchange visits.
D.To explain why he gives up joining the program.
1.第一段Tom的发言中提到“I am considering joining a short exchange program...I'm really not sure. Are the good sides better than the bad ones? I really need your advice!”,直接表明Tom的核心问题是无法决定是否要参加交换访问项目。
2.Sara的发言中明确指出“without parents nearby, many students feel lonely and homesick”,说明想家、思念父母是国际交换访问中可能遇到的挑战;A选项是交换项目的优势而非挑战,C选项“对当地文化一无所知”表述过于绝对,D选项“必须赚钱”文中未提及。
3.划线词“Immersion”后紧跟的内容解释了其含义:“You stay, study and talk with local people every day. You have to use the foreign language in real life all the time.”,即完全在真实生活中使用外语,对应“充分运用外语”的含义。
4.Tom提到Lin Xi的故事前,明确表示“Now I believe exchange visits are a good experience for teenagers...if you prepare well, you can grow a lot”,随后以Lin Xi从想家、觉得英语困难,到变得独立、用新视角看世界的经历为例,目的是证明青少年可以从交换访问中获得成长。
