Chinese scientists have developed the world’s first robot, GEAIR, which can finish the whole plant breeding (育种) process.
It is widely known that hybrid breeding helps the new plants get the best qualities. As we see, Yuan Longping’s hybrid rice has fed a large number of Chinese people. But hybrid breeding traditionally needs workers repeatedly to do cross-pollination (异花授粉) in a short time. It takes a lot of time and energy.
GEAIR solves the problem. The robot uses AI visual (视觉的) recognition and positioning technology when moving among crops by itself. After finding flowers, it depends on robotic arms to perform cross-pollination exactly. Because of thick leaves and small flowers, traditional computer algorithms (算法) cannot easily notice them in real time. To solve this, the research team, led by Xu Cao, trained a new model using 12,800 pictures of flowers. This allows GEAIR to pollinate a flower in 15 seconds, at a cost much lower than a worker’s yearly pay.
What’s more, researchers first used gene editing (基因编辑) to redesign the structure of crop flowers for rapidly creating new flowers which are friendly to hybrid seed production by robot. This is part of their crop-robot co-design idea. Its application in bean breeding has been put into practice.
Based on biotechnology, powered by AI and operated by robots, the achievement symbolizes China has taken the lead in increasing the crop production. Reviewers of the book Cell praised the robot, expecting this exciting and innovative invention will prove its value across different crops in the future.

The smart water bottle is a new invention designed to help people drink enough water every day. It was created by a team of engineers who noticed that many people forget to drink water regularly, which is bad for their health.
This bottle looks like a normal water bottle, but it has a small screen on the surface and a sensor (传感器) inside. The sensor can measure how much water you have drunk, and the screen shows the amount (量) of water you need to drink that day. It also sends messages to your phone via Bluetooth when you haven’t drunk water for a long time.
The idea for the smart water bottle came from Sarah, the leader of the engineering team. She once forgot to drink water for a whole day while working and felt very tired. After that, she decided to invent a product to solve this problem. It took the team six months to develop the first prototype (雏形), and they made many changes to make it more user-friendly.
Now, the smart water bottle is popular among students and office workers. Some schools have even started to use them for students, as it helps kids develop a good habit of drinking water. On January 17, 2025, workers of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge(花江峡谷大桥)in Guizhou Province lifted the last steel piece, weighing 215 tons, into position. This completed the bridge’s main structure (结构) and brought it closer to its planned opening later this year.
Construction (建造) of the bridge began in 2022. It runs 1,420 meters across the Beipan River and stands 625 meters above the river — almost as tall as Shanghai Tower, China’s tallest building. When finished, it will become the world’s tallest bridge.
There are a great number of mountains in Guizhou, which makes bridges essential for local transportation. This new bridge will shorten the travel time across the canyon from one hour to just two minutes. “This bridge will help nearby cities develop faster,” said a local officer.
Building such a bridge was not easy. Its main structure uses about 22,000 tons of steel — about three times the weight of the Eiffel Tower’s main structure. Workers faced many challenges, including strong winds and changing weather. To overcome these difficulties, the team used a smart crane (起重机) system developed in China. “With the help of the BeiDou system, the crane can easily lift things to exact positions,” explained Li Zhao, chief engineer of the project. “This reduced the number of workers needed from eight to four.” The team also used new technology to find possible problems and make sure all parts fit perfectly.
Expressing his joy, Li said, “Watching the bridge grow day by day and finally stand tall above the canyon gives me a strong sense of achievement.”

Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no” or “we don’t know”. But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings (人;生物).
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to the Earth.”
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or the Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited the Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It’s a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as radio signals (信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”

4.Why haven’t beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak?
A.Because they’re afraid of us. B.Because it’s a long way away.
C.Because they don’t want to see us. D.Because they don’t know how to use radio signals.
5.What does the underlined phrase “life forms” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Messages. B.Tools. C.Intelligent beings. D.Radio signals.

Amazing Space
“Curiosity”, NASA’s Mars rover, recently took the world by surprise. It took a picture of a small “flower” while it was exploring the surface of Mars.
Clearly, it’s not an actual flower. But it could be a rock that had been created a long time ago. Back then, the Red Planet possibly had water on its surface.
The effort of the rover could help answer the question of whether life ever existed (存在) on Mars and understand when Mars might have been most suitable to host life. Scientists are feeling psyched about these findings because they provide information about the planet’s past environment.
Saturn’s amazing rings, which are made of ice and rocks, won’t last forever. Scientists say that they are slowly breaking apart and will totally disappear in about 300 million years. They say the rings now may be 10~100 million years old. According to The Atlantic, a popular American magazine, 10 tons of “ring matter” fall into Saturn every second. They all get pulled by Saturn’s gravity (引力). Studying these rings helps scientists learn how planets form and change over time. It reminds us that even amazing things in space don’t last forever.
Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have ring systems. Saturn has the largest rings. Though the others’ rings aren’t as easy to see, they may have had bigger rings in the past.

In October 2017, astronomers in Hawaii saw a strange object. The object was named 'Oumuamua. It means “visitor from afar” in Hawaiian. It was long and thin—like a cucumber. It entered the inner solar system in August 2017. When it passed the sun, it reached a top speed of 315, 800 km/h. It is more than 250 times the speed of sound. By studying its speed and direction, scientists realized that 'Oumuamua possibly came from a star system 25 light years from our sun—a 600, 000-year journey. Most scientists think it was just a rock. However, others—such as Abraham Loeb—have suggested it could be a piece of alien technology. So 'Oumuamua is still a mystery.
Do you know crop circles? Many years ago, a farmer in UK found something very strange. Someone or maybe something has made unusual shapes in his field by pushing down his crops. The shapes can only be seen from the sky. These are called crop circles. Some people think that aliens make crop circles when they land their spaceships. However, it seems clear that they are made by people. The technology to make them is simple—just a rope and different sizes of wood to make thick or thin lines. A crop circle is made by pushing crops down, leaving empty spaces in the field. Some people make crop circles so others will believe in aliens. Other people make them just for fun. Whatever the reason, crop circles continue to draw attention.
Jupiter (木星) is the largest planet in the solar system. It is so big that 1, 300 Earths could fit inside it. It also has a huge number of moons. So far, 79 moons have been found. Among them, one moon is especially interesting to scientists—Europa. It was discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei. It is smaller than Earth’s moon, but it looks very different. Scientists think there might be life because its surface is covered in ice. And under the ice, there is a salty water ocean. The salty ocean water on Europa would be very cold, but scientists have found life in similar conditions on Earth. Future missions (任务) to Europa are being planned. But for now, the icy moon’s secrets remain a mystery.

A.月亮 B.卫星 C.银河 D.流星
4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Earth’s moon is smaller than Europa.
B.Sound traveled 250 times faster than 'Oumuamua.
C.The shapes of crop circles can only be seen from the sky.
D.Scientists have found life in Europa because its surface is covered in ice.
5.What are similarities among 'Oumuamua, crop circles and Europa?
A.They are something very old. B.They are something expensive.
C.They are something dangerous. D.They are something not yet understood.

People have always been very interested in space, but space can also be dangerous, with big rocks called asteroids (小行星) moving around. Recently, a small asteroid named “2024YR4” has caught lots of attention. On February 7th, 2025, it was reported that the asteroid has a 23% chance of hitting the earth in 2032. To keep our earth safe, Chinese scientists are working hard together.
Discovered in December, 2024, “2024YR4” is thought to be 40 to 100 meters wide. Although it’s very far away, over 48 million kilometers, Chinese scientists are watching it closely. They want to find more details (细节).
________. Chinese scientists plan to make use of special telescopes (望远镜). These telescopes, with powerful cameras and smart software, will help scientists observe (观察) the asteroid clearly, giving them more information to think about ways to stop it if it’s coming too close.
To find out the asteroid’s path, China will use supercomputers to learn about its size, shape, speed and the influence of other planets’ gravity (重力) on it. China is working on ways to change the asteroid’s path. They have ideas like sending a spaceship to hit it softly or using a spaceship’s pull to slowly change its direction.
China’s big plan shows how much it cares about protecting our planet. The scientists believe that if an asteroid does come too close, they can react in a calm and prepared way.

Most people enjoy listening to music. But when you ask your classmates what they like listening to, you are likely to get many different answers. Why do different people have different musical tastes? Do you know about the reasons? What do these differences say about us?
Researchers set out to answer these questions. They surveyed 350,000 people from 50 different countries. Then, they detected some connections between musical tastes and personality. Outgoing people preferred music with a fast rhythm (节奏), such as rap. Country music lovers were shown to be more responsible. The researchers guessed worried people might like either sad music or rhythmic music. But it turned out that these people liked neither. Instead, they preferred loud and powerful music.
The researchers also said that climate might influence people’s musical tastes and personality. People in warmer climate preferred rhythmic music. They were more outgoing. This might be a result of longer daylight hours and warmer evenings. They encouraged people to join in social activities.
Of course, we might not divide people simply by their musical tastes. The study just showed us that people from different cultures are more similar than we think. “People are divided by languages and cultures,” said Dr. David Greenberg, “But if an outgoing person in one part of the world likes the same music as outgoing people elsewhere, then we can say that music is really like a powerful bridge.”

Music is beauty in sounds. Why not make your own music with the help of AI?
Artificial intelligence (AI) can do many different things. From controlling the lights in our homes to helping us order pizzas, it seems there aren’t many more uses for AI than we already have. However, can AI make music like human beings?
Thanks to a team of Swiss scientists, AI may soon be able to come up with music especially for us. Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have created a computer algorithm (算法), the “Deep Artificial composer” (DAC), which can create original music all by itself.
Florian Colombo, an EPFL scientist who helped create the DAC, said that AI could produce complete melodies (旋律), with a beginning and an end.
At present, the DAC is only able to produce several pieces of traditional Irish folk music, but it’s hoped that it will be able to create songs based on any type of music in the end.
To “teach” the DAC, the scientists trained it to “listen” to over 2,000 different folk songs. Based on this input (输入), the AI taught itself how to compose music, from getting the pitch (音高) and timing right, to choosing the right notes.
This process is still in its early stages, with the DAC still not producing perfect results, but Colombo told AFP that the AI’s music is still “quite pleasant to listen to.”
While the idea sounds very hopeful, we shouldn’t expect the DAC to replace real-life composers any time soon. According to Colombo, the system was designed to produce only simple melodies. So far, it can only create songs based on a single instrument.
Colombo said that his purpose in creating the DAC was to help people create their own music, not to have it made for them. His exciting new ideas came from Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart. It’s said that he used to throw dice (掷骰子) to help him pick which notes to use when making new music.
“A good composer with creative ideas will never be replaced by an algorithm.” Colombo told AFP.
1.How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By sharing different ideas on AI. B.By explaining the meaning of AI.
C.By showing the development of AI. D.By presenting the advantages of AI.

A.To express his respect for Mozart. B.To present his achievement on AI music.
C.To praise Mozart’s contribution to music. D.To explain his purpose in creating the DAC.
3.What can we learn about the DAC from the passage?
A.The DAC was refused by some composers.
B.The DAC can’t be used instead of real-life composers.
C.Music creation has to depend on the DAC.
D.Scientists are amazed at music made by the DAC.
4.Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.AI is Changing Music Creation B.AI Composers VS Human Composers

When I was a teenager, my parents were never interested in the music I liked. They said it sounded like “a lot of noise”. At the same time, my father regularly described the music that he liked as “beautiful”.
As it turns out, my father is not alone. As I’ve grown older, I’ve often heard people of my age say, “Today’s music is terrible.” Why do many old people just dislike new music?
The mere exposure effect may explain this. It means the more familiar (熟悉的) we are with something, the more likely (可能的) we are to prefer it. When we are in our early teens, we usually spend a lot of time listening to music and discussing it with our friends. The songs and artists that are popular during this time become familiar to us. After we turn 30 years old, working and raising a family take up most of our time. Instead of discovering new music, we listen to old favorites that connect us to a simpler time. Studies show that by the time they turn 33 years old, most people have completely stopped exploring new music.
But I think there is another explanation for why older people don’t like new music. Most popular music, after all, is not written for them. It is made for young people. Punk, rap, hip-hop, heavy metal, and many other types of music began as youthful rebellions (叛逆) against out-of-date ways of doing things. They naturally attract younger audiences.
Do your parents hate the music you like, too? Now, after reading this article, you know that there is nothing wrong with that.

When the 15th National Games started in Guangzhou, its official mascots (吉祥物), “Xiyangyang” and “Lerongrong”, soon became stars on the Internet. They even got the nickname “Dawan Chickens”. This lovely name made the mascots loved by people all over the country.
The mascots are designed from Chinese white dolphins. These are rare animals that live in the Pearl River Estuary (珠江口) near the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. There are three-colored waves on their heads. The colors stand for Guangdong’s kapok (木棉花) red, Hong Kong’s bauhinia (紫荆花) purple and Macao’s lotus (莲花) green. This shows the unity of the three places. But their round bodies and lively poses made people think of Guangdong’s famous chicken dishes. Since chicken is very important in Cantonese food, this funny nickname came into being. Liu Pingyun, the head of the design team, was happy with this public understanding. He hoped to let more people know the mascots’ meaning.
The mascots are also popular because of their energetic shows. Students from local martial arts (武术) schools dress up as them. They practiced for months to put on flexible acts, like spinning and dancing. Their lively interactions made them loved by people online. Outside the sports fields, products with their images are very popular. Many of these products were sold out quickly.
Besides being cute, the “Dawan Chickens” have deep cultural meanings. They stand for the Greater Bay Area’s marine (海洋的) culture and the sports spirit of athletes.

2.Why does Colombo mention Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart?
A.To express his respect for Mozart. B.To present his achievement on AI music.
C.To praise Mozart’s contribution to music. D.To explain his purpose in creating the DAC.
3.What can we learn about the DAC from the passage?
A.The DAC was refused by some composers.
B.The DAC can’t be used instead of real-life composers.
C.Music creation has to depend on the DAC.
D.Scientists are amazed at music made by the DAC.
4.Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.AI is Changing Music Creation B.AI Composers VS Human Composers
C.How AI Replaces Human Composers D.Colombo Helped Create the DAC
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.B 4.A

A. B. C. D.
4.Punk and heavy metal are two different ________ according to the article.
A.kinds of young people B.forms of materials
C.types of music D.ways of doing things
5.According to the article, many old people dislike new music because ________.
①new music is too terrible to listen to ②old people want to be different from young people
③new music is not specially written for old people ④old people have formed their own musical tastes
A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.①④
