第Ⅱ卷 语篇综合训练
(一)阅读理解
There are only two northern white rhinos (犀牛) left on the earth, both of which are female, named Najin and Fatu. They were born in 1989 and 2000 and now live in the OI Pejeta Reserve in Kenya.
The northern white rhino is a species of the white rhinos that were once found in several countries across Central and East Africa. They are grazers primarily feeding on grasses. Sadly, due to illegal hunting and habitat loss, the northern white rhino is now on the edge of extinction.
Professionals have been making great efforts to protect them. The reserve provides 24-hour armed guards to ensure their safety. Scientists are also working hard on reproductive technologies. They have successfully collected female reproductive cells from Najin and Fatu and created embryos (胚胎) through man-made process with frozen reproductive cells from male northern white rhinos.
However, challenges remain. The two female rhinos are unable to carry the embryos naturally due to age and health problems, and the process of putting embryos into southern white rhinos is difficult and time-consuming. Despite these difficulties, professionals are still focused on saving this precious species, hoping to prevent their complete disappearance. The leading scientist Thomas Hildebrandt said, “We achieved together something which was not believed to be possible. That is really a milestone to allow us to produce northern white rhino calves in the next two years.”
Still, other scientists like Steven Seet argued, “We have to consider some questions before starting the project. Should we devote so much to a species with only two females left? Should we humans continue to make decisions for this endangered species?”
