维度四 融合教材·主题探究
【改编自北师大选必三U7】
Up until the 1980s, people in many countries regularly followed in their parents' footsteps by working in the family business or joining the same profession as them. You'd follow your father to sea, onto the farm or into the workshop. You'd follow your mother into the kitchen or sewing room. In your grandparents' time, there was the prospect of doing the same job from graduation until retirement. How times have changed! Most people now have no intention of following in their parents' footsteps or even staying at one job for very long.
In fact, planning to work in the same field or industry for your entire working life just isn't practical anymore. One reason for this is technology. The skills you have now are unlikely to remain relevant and be enough to help you through your entire career. In fact, they will probably be out of date very soon. And then what will you do? Work hard? Win the lottery? Hope for the best? You might be lucky. These strategies might bring you a nice, comfortable life: working at a job you like, earning a decent salary and retiring while you're still young and healthy. But most of us today have to look beyond the little box called “career”.
If you think you can work eight hours a day and build a career, think again. You might be able to keep your job if you finish what you are asked to do, but this is hardly a recipe for great career success. Instead, you'd better keep looking for smarter ways to do your work. You'll need to be a risk taker, an innovator, a problem solver, and a hard worker. Keep doing this, and you can become an expert or a specialist in something one day. You have a chance to choose to build a career, rather than being told to stay or to go.
1.What did people often do in their grandparents' time?
A.They changed jobs frequently.
B.They worked in the same job until retirement.
C.They refused to work in the family business.
D.They chose different professions from their parents.
2.According to this passage, why is it not practical to plan to work in the same field for the entire working life now?
A.Because people get bored easily.
B.Because technology changes rapidly.
C.Because there are too many competitors.
D.Because salaries are too low.
3.What can we infer from the passage?
A.People nowadays don't like to work hard.
B.It's easy to have a great career success now.
C.To succeed in career, one needs to keep improving.
D.Only risk takers can have a successful career.

(2025·揭阳期末)According to new research, babies are not only capable of creative thinking well before starting to speak, but this sort of thinking may be important for language learning.
In the study, the researchers set out to explore the origins of human creativity and productive thinking to try to find out how people arrive at completely new thoughts and ideas. They found that babies were able to very quickly learn new words that describe small quantities and combine these with familiar words to fully understand a phrase.
Lead researcher, Dr. Barbara Pomiechowska, said: “Human creativity is limitless: it has taken us to the moon and allowed us to cure deadly diseases—but despite its importance, we don't yet know when and how this impressive ability to combine ideas and invent new things appears. This research shows that we must go right back to the beginning of language learning to solve this puzzle.”
In the study, the researchers worked with 60 babies, all around the age of 12 months. They started by teaching the babies two novel words describing quantity: “mize”, to mean “one”, and “padu”, to mean “two”.
Then the babies were asked to combine these new number words with different object names, for example to identify “padu ducks” from some pictures. By teaching novel words to represent quantities, the researchers were able to test the babies' ability to combine concepts in real time, rather than simply recall combinations of words that they already knew from previous experience.
By using eye-tracking technology to monitor where the babies look, the researchers were able to show that the babies could successfully combine the two concepts to understand what they were being asked about.
According to Dr. Barbara, this ability to combine different concepts is likely to help babies not only to understand the language input, but also to learn about different aspects of the physical and social world.

I remember wondering if we should even be friends when I found out that my new friend Karina did not share my opinions about some stuff. It was hard to imagine disagreeing with her about anything, because when we first met, we got along so great.
It was as if we'd known each other forever.Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp, we picked each other.Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. And the more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were.We both had two lovely cats.We both liked baking extra-creative cookies.
But then something happened. The tent camp was next to a piece of beautiful land that had a bunch of giant old trees on it.Whenever it was nice out, we'd get to eat our lunch at picnic tables that were right by some of those trees.“Whoa!” said Karina one day.“Look at the millions of holes all the way up and down this trunk.”
“That's amazing,” I said.“A special kind of woodpecker (啄木鸟)makes those holes to store acorns (橡子).”
“Pretty cool!” said our counselor, Miguel.“Now, let's all be sure to keep this magical forest as clean and perfect.Don't forget to put your trash and recyclables in the bins.”
And that's when things got complicated.“Hey,” said our friend LeVar.“Have you guys heard that shopping-mall rumor (传闻)? They want to cut down a bunch of those trees to make room for a shopping center.”
“That's terrible!” I said.“We have to stop that.”
“I disagree,” said Karina.“My parents said the shopping center would make new jobs for people.”
“But think of all the birds and squirrels that would lose their homes!” I said.“I want people to have jobs, but not if it means cutting down trees.”
“Don't you think people's jobs are more important than trees?” Karina asked.
“Can't we figure out how to make jobs without destroying nature?” I answered.
“You know,” Karina said, super seriously, “maybe we're not quite as alike as we thought.”
I sighed sadly.

One possible version:
Maybe two people with opposite points of view just aren't meant to be friends, I was thinking. That evening, as we sat around the campfire, the atmosphere felt heavy with unspoken words.Suddenly, Karina thought of an idea, “What if we organized a community event to raise awareness about the importance of those trees and also brainstormed ideas for creating jobs without harming nature?” I couldn't help but smile at her suggestion.“That's a fantastic idea, Karina! Let's do it together. Our friendship is strong enough to handle differences,” I replied, relief and excitement washing over me.
We ended up having much more fun at the tent camp. Our efforts not only strengthened our friendship but also brought our camp community together in a shared cause. We realized that friendships aren't about agreeing on everything. They're about respecting each other's perspectives, learning from differences, and finding common goals. The forest remained untouched, and our bond blossomed into something even deeper and more meaningful. In the end, it wasn't about proving who was right. It was about growing together, as individuals and as friends.

There is a heated discussion about whether the senior students should spare the time to take part in the running exercise during the break.
Some think it is a good idea, as running just during the break won't take up too much time and will rest our brains, making the study more effective. Most importantly, running can build up our bodies and reduce diseases. However, others disapprove, holding the view that it is a waste of time and causes tiredness and excitement, which will distract us from study. What's worse, we may probably get hurt during the running.
As far as I'm concerned, I think we should take part in it.After running we can feel more refreshed and relaxed, which can help us learn better.

Resting on my sofa after school, I gazed at my shelf of glistening gold medals and trophies (奖杯).A certain trophy caught my eye and I picked it up.“Sunshine Primary School 2016 Basketball-Champion.” As I admired that trophy, I began to recall those incidents leading to how I received it.
When I was in Primary Five, I was in the basketball school team.Every month, we would have a basketball match against another school's basketball team.In spite of the amount of training we had, we had never won a single match before. That was due to our lack of teamwork. Our team would argue over little things and then, we would refuse to play after it.Our coach was at his wit's end.Looking at the number of matches we had lost, I knew we had to do something.
During one of our training sessions, our team split into two to have a match against each other.“Three, two, one, start!” our basketball coach, Coach Leong, yelled.John, who was in my team, managed to grab the ball that Coach Leong threw in the air. From the moment John grabbed the ball, he refused to let anyone take it.“Pass the ball to me, John!” I exclaimed.I was at a good position to shoot the ball into the hoop then.To my dismay, John made an annoying face at me.Out of frustration, I leapt towards John and made an attempt to snatch the ball, which turned out to be a battle between John and I.Coach Leong shook his head and boomed like an active volcano, “Children! Is this the type of behaviour I should be seeing from you? The match is in four weeks and if you are going to behave like this during the match, you will bring shame to me, the school and yourselves! Don't you even know the importance of teamwork?” Coach Leong sighed and gave us a disappointed look.It seemed as if he had some sad news he hadn't announced to us, but could not bear to do so.I was right.

That day, Coach Leong announced that he would be retiring after our competition. His voice trembled with emotion as he shared the news, casting a somber mood over the team.Understanding dawned upon us—the upcoming game wasn't just about winning; it was our last chance to honor Coach Leong's dedication and years of hard work.We doubled our efforts during practices, focusing on coordination, trust, and passing rather than individual glory.Through sweat and perseverance, we gradually learned to function as a cohesive unit.
The day of the basketball match came. For one final pep talk, Coach Leong's eyes gleamed with a mixture of hope and pride, reminding us that this game was for him, for our school, and most importantly, for ourselves.Stepping onto the court, we played like never before—passing precisely, communicating effectively, and supporting each other at every turn.As the final whistle blew, marking our victory, tears welled up in Coach Leong's eyes.Holding that championship trophy high, we knew we had not only won the game but also rediscovered the true essence of teamwork.
