Step 1: Warm-up & Lead-in (5 mins)
1. Review the Reading Text (3 mins):
- Ask students to recall the story of Leah: What did Leah do to help sick children? What difficulties did she face?
- Extract 3 sentences with modal verbs from the text and write them on the blackboard:
① Crayons may carry viruses and spread diseases.
② It can be boring to wait for X-rays and treatments.
③ There must be something for me to do.
- Ask: What do these three verbs have in common? What different meanings do they express?
2. Topic Introduction (2 mins):
- Say: Today we will learn the usage of these three modal verbs: must, may, can. We will use them to talk about helping people around us, just like Leah did.
Step 2: Grammar Rule Exploration (10 mins)
1. Rule Analysis (6 mins):
- Guide students to analyze the 3 sentences and summarize the usage:

- Ask students to find more sentences with must, may, can in the reading passage Adding Some Colour, and share them with the class.
- Check and explain the usage in each sentence to consolidate understanding.
Step 3: Grammar Practice (15 mins)
1. Exercise 6: Complete the sentences (5 mins)
- Ask students to complete the sentences individually:

- Check answers and explain the logic of each choice.
2. Exercise 7: Complete the dialogues (6 mins)
- Ask students to complete the 3 dialogues with the correct modal verbs:

Step 4: Post-reading & Output Practice (8 mins)
1. Pair Work: A Helping Hand (5 mins):
- Guide students to use the textbook’s "A helping hand" structure and Useful expressions to discuss helping others, with modal verbs:
- Who needs your help? (e.g., My deskmate / The elderly in the community / Sick children)
- Why do they need help? (e.g., He may find it a challenge to learn English. / They need a helping hand.)
- What can you do to help? (e.g., I can help him with his homework. / There must be something for me to do, such as raising money.)
- Example dialogue:
A: Who needs your help?
B: My deskmate may find it a challenge to learn English.
A: What can you do to help?
B: I can help him with his grammar. We must practice every day.
- Invite 2-3 pairs to present their dialogues.
2. Think & Share (3 mins):
- Ask: What can we learn from Leah? How can we use modal verbs to talk about helping others?
- Guide students to use modal verbs to express their ideas, e.g., We can help people in need. We must be kind to others. Small acts may make a big difference.
Step 5: Summary & Homework (2 mins)
1. Summary (1 min):
- Recap the usage of must, may, can and their differences.
- Emphasize the theme: We can use these modal verbs to talk about helping others, just like Leah. Kindness can change lives.
2. Homework (1 min, layered design):
- Basic: Copy the grammar rules and complete the textbook exercises; recite the 3 dialogues.
- Intermediate: Write a short paragraph (80 words) about "How I can help others", using at least 3 modal verbs (must, may, can).
- Advanced: Create a 5-sentence dialogue with your partner about helping a classmate, using all three modal verbs.
