For several days, the water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell. There were deep cracks that appeared in the well walls. At least one well had some smelly gas coming out of it. Chickens and even pigs were too nervous to eat, and dogs refused to go inside buildings. Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide, and fish jumped out of the water. At about 3:00 a.m., on 28 July 1976, bright lights were seen in the sky outside the city of Tangshan and loud noises were heard. But the city's one million people were asleep as usual that night. At 3:42 a.m., everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world were coming to an end! Eleven kilometres directly below the city, one of the most deadly earthquakes of the 20th century had begun, a quake that even caused damage more than 150 kilometres away in Beijing. Nearly one third of the whole nation felt it! A huge crack, eight kilometres long and 30 metres wide, cut across houses, roads, and waterways. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In less than one minute, a large city lay in ruins. Two thirds of the people who lived there were dead or injured. Thousands of children were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or badly injured in the quake was more than 400,000. Everywhere survivors looked, there was nothing but ruins. Nearly everything in the city was destroyed. About 75 percent of the city's factories and buildings, 90 percent of its homes, and all of its hospitals were gone. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves, but no wind could blow them away. Most bridges had fallen or were not safe to cross. The railway tracks were now useless pieces of metal. Tens of thousands of cows, hundreds of thousands of pigs, and millions of chickens were dead. Sand now filled the wells instead of water. People were in shock—and then, later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan again. Even more buildings fell down. Water, food, and electricity were hard to get. People began to wonder how long the disaster would last. 1.What were the strange things happening in the countryside of northeastern Hebei before the earthquake? A.The water in the wells kept rising. B.Only chickens were too nervous to eat. C.There were no cracks in the well walls. D.Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide. 2.When did the earthquake happen in Tangshan? A.At about 3:00 a.m., on 28 July 1976. B.At 3:42 a.m., on 28 July 1976. C.At about 3:00 p.m., on 28 July 1976. D.At 3:42 p.m., on 28 July 1976. 3.What can we infer from the passage? A.The earthquake caused little damage to Tangshan. B.People in Tangshan were wellprepared for the earthquake. C.The rescue work after the earthquake was very difficult. D.There were no more earthquakes in Tangshan after that. A Maggie, a girl of thirteen years old, lived on the west coast of the United States. She had never experienced an earthquake before; she only prepared for it.As long as she could remember, preparing for an earthquake was common at her school. Her family had made plans as well in case of a natural disaster. One day, Maggie arrived home from school at the usual time. However, it was not the same as usual. She was home alone. Her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway and her dad was to arrive at the airport. He was coming home from a twoweek business trip. After finishing her homework, Maggie felt a little hungry, so she went to the kitchen to find something to eat. Just then she felt a shake, then the violent shaking.Maggie quickly ran under the large table in the dining room. The sounds of breaking glass and the crashing of many things were deafening,_and Maggie hugged herself in fear. After what seemed like a very long time, the earthquake appeared to be over.Maggie could hear the sound of water rushing below her in the basement. And there was the smell of natural gas in the air.Maggie knew where the main water valve (阀门) was and how to turn it off.Dad had ever shown her before. Slowly and carefully she came out from under the table. The once tidy home was then almost unrecognizable.Walls had fallen down and many things in the room were in a mess.As Maggie approached the open basement door, she could see the steps.Carefully she made her way down into the dark basement. While placing her feet firmly on the floor,Maggie felt a sudden pain as a large wood hit her head and shoulder. She fell unconscious onto a pile of boxes. An hour later, she woke up and found her parents beside her.She was happy that she was still alive! 1.What can we infer from the first paragraph? A.Earthquakes are the main natural disasters in the US. B.Maggie's parents taught her how to survive in an earthquake. C.Earthquakes occur often in the west of the US. D.Maggie has some selfhelp knowledge in earthquakes. 根据第一段中的“As long as she could remember...in case of a natural disaster.” 2.What does the underlined word “deafening” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Very loud. B.Quite familiar. C.Very distant. D.Quite strange. 3.What can we know about Maggie? A.She was the only child in her family. B.She was not afraid at all during the earthquake. C.She was hurt on the way to turning off the water valve. D.She had experienced an earthquake before. 根据第四段中的“Maggie knew where the main water valve was and how to turn it off.”和最后一段中的“While placing her feet firmly...hit her head and shoulder.” 4.What does the passage mainly talk about? A.A story of a girl in an earthquake. B.The importance of preparing for an earthquake. C.The ways to escape from an earthquake. D.The danger of an earthquake. While having a cyclone travel with lower speed may seem like a good thing, it's actually just the opposite. Wind speeds within the storm remain high, but the whole system itself moves slower, allowing punishing rains to stay longer over communities. “Nothing good comes out of a slowing storm,” says James Kossin, author of the paper. “It can increase the amount of time that buildings are exposed to strong winds. And it increases rainfall.” In his paper, Kossin showed that from 1949 to 2016, tropical cyclones across the globe slowed their movement by 10 percent on average. In some regions, the speed of those storms slowed even more as they hit land. In the western North Pacific, the decrease was much more manifest—almost a third. That means a storm that may already hold more moisture (水分) will have time to drop more of it in each spot. Kossin's work was based on details of almost 70 years' worth of storms, but he didn't try to determine what was causing the slowdown. Still, the change is exactly what he and other cyclone experts said, which would be expected from climate change. With the polar regions warming faster than other parts of the globe, that is changing the pressure and reducing the winds that push these storms. Christina Patricola, a scientist, called Kossin's work important and new and said she found it reliable. “I was not surprised by his findings,” she says. “But I was surprised by the slowdown.” Kossin hopes that scientists will begin building models that show which places are likely to face the most risk. Given that storms in some regions are moving towards polar regions and already increasing in intensity (强度), cyclones causing unusually powerful rain may threaten places not normally in their paths. Scientists must take action to make those places suffer less from the disasters. 5.Why is the decrease in cyclones' speed a bad thing? A.It leads the cyclones to move faster on the ground. B.It causes the cyclones to have higher wind speed outside. C.It makes hard rains and strong winds last longer in one place. D.It results in more typhoons taking place in some communities. 根据第二段中的“Wind speeds within the storm remain high...punishing rains to stay longer over communities.”以及“It can increase...it increases rainfall.” 6.What does the underlined word “manifest” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Obvious. B.Satisfying. C.Confusing. D.Impossible. 根据画线词上文“In some regions, the speed of those storms slowed even more as they hit land.” 7.What does paragraph 4 suggest? A.Climate change in the polar regions is under control. B.Scientists find it hard to understand the slower cyclones. C.Scientists should do further experiments in polar regions. D.Climate change may be the cause of the slowdown in the cyclones. 根据第四段中的“which would be expected from climate change...the winds that push these storms.” 8.Why does Kossin want scientists to build models in the last paragraph? A.To find out the normal paths of serious cyclones. B.To prove the speed of the cyclones can be controlled. C.To reduce the damage from cyclones to possible areas. D.To call on scientists to focus on the danger of climate change. 根据最后一段中的“Kossin hopes that scientists...face the most risk.”以及“Scientists must take action to make those places suffer less from the disasters.” Ⅱ.完形填空 (2025·昆明高一联考)I was driving on the freeway when I noticed heavy clouds roll in.
