【改编自译林选必一U3】
As a huge art fan, I knew exactly what I was looking forward to most about my trip to Paris: visiting the Musée d'Orsay. Housed in an old railway building, this worldfamous art museum features some of the bestknown paintings from the Impressionist movement of the 19th century.
As I wandered through the Impressionist gallery, I appreciated masterpieces like The Ballet Class and The Card Players. Even though I had admired them hundreds of times on my computer screen, nothing could have prepared me for the wonder I felt when I finally laid eyes on the real thing. While it was hard to pick a favourite painting out of so many amazing works, the artists who made the deepest impression on me were two of the greatest Impressionist painters, Claude Monet and PierreAuguste Renoir.
I could see from Monet's works that he was greatly inspired by nature. In the last three decades of his life he painted mostly scenes from his garden. One of these scenes is shown in the famous piece Blue Water Lilies, which I studied for quite a while in the gallery. I couldn't believe it when I heard he did around 250 paintings of the same water lily pond, all in different colours and styles. It is amazing that every time Monet studied this simple scene, he brought the pond's beauty to the canvas in a unique way.
Renoir, I noticed, preferred to paint scenes of everyday life. For me, the most interesting of his paintings is his 1876 masterpiece Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette, which shows life in a busy neighbourhood of Paris on a Sunday afternoon. When I saw it up close, I was struck by the small areas of light across the painting, and the way the soft edges of the figures seemed to mix together. There's so much going on, but so little clear detail. This effect makes the lively movement of the dance almost jump out at the viewer.

Meeting regularly, they pour their collective love into every stitch (针法) they make. The group has been working for over ten years, meeting every Friday, to support organizations that help others, locally and around the world. Bealle, a certified child life specialist at Children's Health Hospital, explained how the hats are making a difference to the tiny patients and their families. “Caregivers are able to wear the hats on their body to move their smells before placing the hats back on the infants, encouraging connecting and making the infants less stressful,” he said.
Throughout the infants' admission, many holidays are celebrated. At times, some infants are seriously ill and unable to dress up for holiday photos the families have planned. (2025·福州期末)Skill in copying and moving images onto paper is an art form shining in history, Zhao Xu reports. The rubbing, the tracing (描摹) of characters onto a piece of paper, reached its golden age during the Song Dynasty (9601279).
To do this, a thin piece of paper was placed over the surface of the stone tablet (石匾) carved with characters. Then water, or later, ink, was applied smoothly to the back of the paper with just the right amount of pressure, to soften the paper and allow the details to move onto it. The paper was left to dry and then be lifted off the stone surface, carrying with it a copy of the original (原作).
Repeated hundreds of thousands of times during the Song era, this handson skill enabled educated members of Song society to have a chance to learn from masters' calligraphic works either from their own times or from earlier dynasties. Oftentimes, the original calligraphy, or even its stone version, became lost over time, thus making the rubbings the only surviving copy of the masterworks that had once existed. In that sense, the Song rubbings, and those behind them have helped to preserve a cultural relic much valued then and now.
Now, art lovers have the chance to visit it at an exhibition held at Beijing's Palace Museum on the theme of the Song rubbings. Of the 40 pieces on show, 20 are drawn from the collection of the Palace Museum, which holds a total of 150 Song rubbings. The other half are lent for the first time by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, whose rubbings were donated by J. S. Lee.
