维度四 融合教材·主题探究
【改编自人教必修三U4】
“Are we alone? What's out there?” People have always looked up at the stars and wondered about space. Today, scientists design vehicles to carry astronauts into space to make important discoveries. Space exploration has come a long way, and we now hope to discover other planets that are suitable enough to support life.
Before the mid-20th century, most people felt travelling into space was only a dream that could never come true. However, scientists were determined to realise that dream. After many experiments, they succeeded in making rockets that could escape Earth's gravity. On 4 October 1957, the Sputnik 1 satellite was launched by the USSR and successfully orbited around Earth. Afterwards, the USSR focused on sending people into space, and on 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person in the world to enter space. Over eight years later, on 20 July 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon, famously saying, “That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” Following this, there were many more important space achievements. For example, on 5 September 1977, America's NASA space agency launched Voyager 1 to study deep space, and it still transmits data to this day. And the International Space Station (1998) has provided a continuous human presence in space, with astronauts from many different countries on board.
Although scientists try to make sure nothing goes wrong, accidents can still happen. For example, all the astronauts on the Soyuz 11, Challenger, and Columbia spacecraft died during their missions. However, while such disasters brought much sadness and disappointment, the desire to explore the universe did not die. This is because people believe in the importance of carrying on space exploration despite the huge risks.

(2025·济宁一中月考)Growing up on a farm, Tori James spent most of her early years outdoors, building shelters and playing in muddy streams. She describes herself as an ambitious, adventurous child who was fascinated by the survival guidelines on her bedside table. Even so, James says she was unaware at that time that, one day, she might be the youngest British woman to reach the summit of Mount Qomolangma.
Today, James is a professional adventurer. Yet ahead of her first expedition at the age of 18, she spent a long time mapping the cracks of Iceland's Vatnajökull Glacier with the British Exploring Society. James recalls doubting her ability to last a month out in the cold without the comfort of a hot bath. “It's by stepping out of our comfort zone that we understand our true potential,” she explains. “That's when the magic happens.”
Although James has spent a significant part of her life exploring some of the most remote landscapes in the world, when it comes to traveling, she believes that there are numerous ways for everyone to push back their boundaries, other than by undertaking physical challenges. James also encourages wouldbe adventurers not to be put off by the stereotypical (成见的) image of the rugged, hardy explorer. “I am such a believer that, with the right support and skills, everyone can bring something to an expedition,” she says.
Sometimes, she adds, it's only out in the field that someone's hidden talents emerge. A diverse team can be the key to a successful trip, particularly given the role of exploration in today's world. “Historically, exploration has been about people finding nature's hardest obstacles and trying to either overcome them, or beat them,” says James. “But now, for me at least, exploration is about connecting with nature, not conquering it. It's about our connection to the living world around us, it's about sharing its importance once we've returned and it's about figuring out how to go on an adventure sustainably.”

(2025·驻马店经济开发区高级中学月考)While temperatures continue to climb, visitors are still coming to visit Death Valley National Park on the border between California and Nevada. The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 54.4 ℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles.
Early information from the park service shows that across the nation's 424 national parks, at least four people have died from heatrelated causes in 2023. That includes a 65yearold man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley.
Death Valley National Park suggests visitors be careful and not have expectations of rescue. While park rangers (护林员) drive on park roads and can aid tourists in need, it is unsure that lost visitors will get help in time.
Physical activity can make the heat feel even worse and leave people exhausted. Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland, said, “It's very hot especially when there's a gentle wind. You would think that maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face.”
Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service's website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley.
Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot.
Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. “It's hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said.
