(2025·南阳六校月考)3M and Discovery Education announced Sean Jiang from Gilman School as one of the top ten finalists from across the nation for the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. It's a competition that encourages students to identify an everyday problem and submit a video showing the science behind the solution he or she came up with.
14yearold Jiang decided to help those who can't see. Blind people have a hard time navigating(绕过) objects at medium or far distances. So Jiang wanted to design something to give them a headsup on obstacles (障碍) that may be in the path.
Jiang's inspiration came from the power of the hearing system. “I learned in school that bats and whales are able to use echolocation (回声定位) to help them navigate and I also saw some very skilled blind people that use echolocation to help them walk on social media,” said Jiang.
Jiang started with a virtual reality setting and then made it a reality. His creation uses a depth camera that can detect how close objects are, thus giving enough time to avoid the obstacles. When a blind person is walking with the device, the sensor of the depth camera gathers the information regarding the obstacles' position and distance. Then the AI system in it will turn the distance data into musical sound guidance. This could significantly increase the walking speed of a blind person as well as decrease the number of obstacles they hit.
Some other similar programs were designed to find objects that were in close range, but Jiang still wanted the blind to experience the world even fuller so they were able to see stuff that was much further away than their circle of reach.
In October, the top ten finalists will compete in person in Minneapolis for the title of “America's Top Young Scientist” and a $25,000 prize.

(2025·海南期中联考)Recently, a group of stroke (中风) survivors in British Columbia will test a new technology designed to aid their recovery, and finally restore use of their arms and hands. Participants will wear a groundbreaking new “smart glove” capable of tracking their hand and finger movements during rehabilitation (康复) exercises supervised by Dr. Janice Eng, a professor of medicine at UBC.
“With this glove, we can monitor patients' hand and finger movements without the need for cameras. We can then analyze and finetune their exercise programs for the best possible results, even remotely,” says Dr. Eng.
Peyman Servati, a UBC electrical and computer engineering professor, and his team at the startup, Texavie, created the smart glove for collaboration (协作) on the stroke project. Dr. Servati said in a paper published in Nature Machine Intelligence, “This is the most accurate glove we know of that can track hand and finger movements and grasping force without requiring motioncapture cameras. Thanks to machine learning models we developed, the glove can accurately determine the angles of all finger joints and the wrist as they move. The technology is highly precise and fast, capable of detecting small stretches and pressures and predicting movement with at least 99% accuracy—matching the performance of costly motioncapture cameras.”
Unlike other products in the market, the glove is wireless (无线的) and comfortable, and can be easily washed after removing the battery. Dr. Servati and his team have developed advanced methods of producing the smart glove at a relatively low cost locally.
Dr. Servati hopes that the smart glove can enter the market soon. He adds, “Imagine being able to accurately capture hand movements and interactions with objects and have them automatically displayed on a screen. There are endless applications. You can type text without needing a physical keyboard, control a robot, or translate American Sign Language into written speech in real time, providing easier communication for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.”

According to a report by South China Morning Post, China is planning to launch a hyperloop (超级高铁), also known as a superhigh speed pipeline maglev system by 2035. If the project goes as planned, the new train will be the world's fastest groundbased transport technology.
Chinese authorities have announced the approval of the country's first hyperloop line. It will pass between the cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou. These are two key metropolitan areas for the country's economy, known for their large populations.
The distance between these two cities can now be covered in about three hours by car or an hour by highspeed train. However, the hyperloop can reach speeds of up to 1,000 km/h, which means that the route can be completed in just 15 minutes. That's about 5 times faster than commercial passenger planes and 10 times than traditional highspeed trains.
The proposed project will make China one of the pioneers in hyperloop technology, allowing faster travel between several major cities. The hyperloop provides a highsecurity level with low energy consumption. It reduces noise and pollution levels while still being faster than commercial flights and the fastest current bullet train. The technology will further advance China's position as a leader in transport.
A superfast hyperloop train in China has completed its first test runs. These consisted of three test runs at a superconducting maglev test line in Datong, Shanxi Province that reached the speed of 50 km/h. However, the current tube available for trials measures only 2 km in length. It is expected to be extended to 60 km over the next few years.
