(2025·德州一中月考)In 1880, fourteenyearold Matthew Henson was fascinated by the tales of sailors' exciting lives at sea. One day he set out on the fortymile journey to the nearest large port to seek work on a sailing ship.
In Baltimore, Henson found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years, Henson sailed around the world. By the time he left the Katie Hinds in 1885, Henson was welleducated, thus becoming an excellent seaman.
Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a hat shop in Washington, D.C. One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat. The man, Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S. government. He needed experienced men to accompany him.
The shop owner knew about his young employee's skills and experience on ocean voyages, so he introduced Peary to Henson. Henson and Peary soon found they had a great deal in common, including their love of the sea.
Using his mapreading and sailing skills, Henson proved himself to be a worthy and intelligent seaman. One day Peary told Henson about his real dream: to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole. He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true.
Over the next five years, the two explorers made two trips together to the Arctic. However, they were not able to reach the pole each time.
In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old. The years of hardship and suffering in extreme cold had taken_their_toll_on_both_men. This would be their last chance.
In April 1909, Henson's instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted an American flag in the snow. They were greatly honored for their achievement. Today, the two friends and fellow explorers lie in heroes' graves not far apart at Arlington National Cemetery.

Scrolling through social media can quickly convince you that everyone's life is more interesting than yours.During a particularly adventurous week on social media recently, I saw water skiing in Maui, hiking in Yosemite and swimming with wild pigs in Bermuda. I started searching for flights to new places. Then I ordered pho, Vietnam's national dish, from the same Vietnamese place I eat every week and returned to the same old routine and I felt bad about not trying somewhere new.
Evolutionarily, human brains tend to find newfangled experiences more exciting and attentiongrabbing than repeated experiences. They can't process all the thrills around us, so we evolve to pay attention to new, flashy and potentially dangerous things more intently than familiar things, which we've seen enough to know they're not dangerous. What's more, words like “repetition” and “repetitiveness” tend to be associated with more negative emotions.
However, recent research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests we should reconsider how we digest those feelings of monotony (单调).Some previous research has painted a negative picture of repeated experiences, saying that doing the same thing twice can feel less valuable. But Ed O'Brien, a professor of behavioral science, wondered whether people actually underestimate how positively they react to repeated experiences.
To test this theory,Mr O'Brien and his team exposed all participants to the same stimulus (刺激)(various stimuli were tested, including museum visits, movies and video games).Next, after dividing them into two groups, the first group of participants were asked to imagine repeating the experience, while the second actually did repeat the experience. Counter to previous research, Mr O'Brien found that across the board, repeated experiences were far more enjoyable than participants expected. In other words:You're far more likely to enjoy something the second time around than you think.
“Brand new experiences are definitely great for enjoyment,” said Mr O'Brien. “And our studies don't go against this idea. In many cases, the brand new option is better. But,what our studies emphasize is that repeated options might also have high hedonic (享乐的) value and might also come with lower costs than a purely new option.”

(2025·青岛月考)The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations give us opportunities of our time—opportunities to terminate extreme poverty, to make sure that everyone can get food and clean water. In fact, there are many space services that can help us pursue the Sustainable Development Goals.
Communication satellites make it possible to make a phone call and have Internet service on the earth. This is particularly important during times of disaster recovery. When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines, the local communication networks needed to be repaired, and teams brought in communication tools that could connect with satellites. This was useful during the time of repair and recovery.
In space,we have a laboratory on the International Space Station. The vehicle and everything inside are in a form of free fall around the earth, and they don't experience the effect of gravity. And because of this,we call it “microgravity”.When astronauts are in the microgravity environment, their bodies react as if they're aging rapidly.Their bones and muscles weaken, and the systems of their bodies change. As scientists study how to keep astronauts healthy in space,we can take the exercises and techniques we use for astronauts and transfer (转用) them to improve our health here.
Often,as we develop technology for astronauts and exploration for spacecraft,we can also transfer those inventions to help people on the earth.Filtration (过滤) system is one of the examples. It is a tool that liquid is passed through in order to remove any materials that are not wanted. With the help of filtration system, drinking clean water became possible for astronauts in space. The system is now being used around the world.
Space is also a great source of inspiration, through education, research and astronomy (天文学).Now,countries around the world are working at advancing their own development by increasing their local knowledge of engineering, science and space.
