(2025·临沂四中月考)In 2016, Mark Raymond learned the hard way that life can change in a split second (一瞬间). One day, Raymond went boating with his friends. He jumped off the back of the boat and hit a sandbank, leading to a severe injury to his neck. He became paralyzed (瘫痪的) and spent months in the hospital receiving treatment. When he was allowed to leave the hospital, he realized that the_hard_part was just beginning. He still needed to exercise to recover his strength after finishing the outpatient (门诊病人) treatment.
However, when Raymond returned home, he realized there was a serious lack of accessible gyms or facilities that could help people with different disabilities work out and improve their health in his community. The lack of them caused Raymond to take action. In 2018, he established the Split Second Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides treatment that takes up from where outpatient treatment left off.
“The Split Second Foundation has equipment for people who have different disabling conditions,” Raymond explained.“Our specially trained staff will evaluate (评估) disabled customers' physical needs and limitations and then provide recovery, education, and ongoing fitness classes suitable for them. We're able to push them in a recoverydriven fitness environment to be their best selves.”
Raymond's goal is to open more accessible gyms, not just in New Orleans where he lives. He hopes the Split Second Foundation can help even more people get their lives back after disastrous accidents. “People with disabilities should also be thought of as productive members of society,” said Raymond. “Anybody's life can change in an instant due to some kind of injury or disabling condition, and we are providing what's next.”
When Raymond couldn't find the services he needed, he made some for himself and others. This is the sort of cleverness we love to see in the world.

(2025·柳州期末)A project in Britain is trying to deal with the loneliness of the old by asking young people to work as volunteers to help the old.
Lorna Burnett was paired with 15yearold Ailsa, a schoolgirl, through the Reading Friends project. Lorna used to read two to three books every week when she was a librarian. In her 40s, she developed a serious eye disease and her vision became worse and worse. Finally, she was unable to read or watch television for any length of time without her eyes hurting.
Not only have Lorna's reading periods with Ailsa helped to reconnect her with her love for literature, they have also built a strong intergenerational friendship.“I chose a book and she would come along and read it to me,” Lorna said.
Since the Reading Agency started the program in 2017, they have introduced tens of Reading Friends periods across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.
According to the organisation's website,“Loneliness is an important health and wellbeing problem for older people.Research shows that reading together can help older people to build social networks and connect with others.Fact also shows that reading has a good influence on cognitive functions (认知能力) and wellbeing and can reduce the risk of dementia (失智).”
Ruth Sheppard from Bannockburn High School is responsible for connecting schoolchildren like Ailsa with the program and she says that it has had an amazing influence on the young people.“We have wonderful young people at our school and we want to get them into the program,” Sheppard said.“It has been fantastic to see them become more confident as well as improving their reading ability and social skills. They are meeting community members like Lorna that they are making friendships with, and all the library workers also help them.”

A charity is carrying badly ill children above the clouds to receive the lifesaving medical treatments they need.Founded by Mark Pestal,AeroAngel provides the children with private flights to hospitals across the United States for free.
While serving on the board of another charity, Pestal recognized the need for access to highperformance airplanes that can fly in bad weather and travel long distances without stopping. Then AeroAngel was born. Most of its flights are at least 500 miles in distance, and the kids they help are often battling serious illnesses which prevent them from being in large crowds and on commercial airlines.AeroAngel's private planes can fly into and out of small airports, making them accessible to families in both the countryside and big cities.
In addition to leading the organization, Pestal serves as a copilot on about 25% of its flights, but he wants to increase that number.“I'm working on putting myself out of the job as the director,” he said,“so I can just be a copilot on the flights and fly the kids around.”
Fouryearold Dria from Idaho had been on a waiting list for an operation for almost two years. Her mother received a call on a Wednesday afternoon telling her there was a donor at Duke University. But Dria needed to be in North Carolina that Sunday for the operation.“With some miracles, AeroAngel was able to find a volunteer pilot to fly to Idaho on Saturday night and to be ready to leave for Duke on Sunday morning,” Dria's mother said.
Already helping one to two families each week, AeroAngel, which has received more than $3.5 million in donations to date, aims to expand to be able to cover more areas and kids.“We've got a full list of probably over a dozen flights that we're trying to fill right now.I'd like to say that we're trying to have more pilots joining us and give them professional training. It means that we are building the program while continuing the flight services,” Pestal shared.
