We see Chinese workers building roads in the Congo, a port in Pakistan, railways in Panama, and an airport in Sri Lanka. And we see Chinese miners, oil workers, agricultural experts, mechanics, and doctors working in nearly every corner of the world. And some people may ask, “Is it worth it? Why help people overseas when China has many areas that are still in need of development?” I had the same questions myself. But for me, it was much more personal. You see, my mother is a medical doctor, and for the last two years, she has been working as a volunteer consultant in Tanzania, Africa, as a part of a medical team sent by the Chinese government. To be honest, when my mother first left for Africa, I was upset. My mother cooked me dinner every night, and she took good care of me. But more importantly, she was my best friend. We talked together, we spent our leisure time together, and except for school and work, we were never apart. So I was unhappy about her leaving without even asking for my input. But then I began to hear about the work she was doing in Tanzania, a country that has many health problems, and now I am singing a different tune. Many dangerous diseases which are rare in China are quite commonly contracted in Tanzania. And, while the country is quite beautiful and has much natural wealth, many of the people are quite poor and live without things we take for granted, such as electricity, running water, cars and good transport systems, and supermarkets. 1.What can we see Chinese people doing on TV in faroff places? A.Teaching in schools. B.Building roads and ports. C.Opening restaurants. D.Performing in shows. 2.What was the author's mood when her mother first left for Africa? A.Happy. B.Relieved. C.Excited. D.Upset. 3.What kind of problems does Tanzania have according to the passage? A.Educational problems. B.Employment problems. C.Health problems. D.Political problems. 答案:1~3.BDC Ⅰ.阅读理解 A (2025·芜湖期中)Arsh believes in the importance of making the world a more beautiful place. The talented boy not only paints but also sells his artwork and donates the money. It all started when his parents bought him a set of painting tools for his 8th birthday. Once he had his own materials, he began spending much of his free time putting color on his canvas. As Arsh's paintings began to grow in number, he decided to give them as gifts to friends and family. Receiving a positive response from people around him, he soon realized his pieces had the potential to get much more than smiles and praise. His light bulb moment came shortly: he would sell his artwork and donate the money to charity. His first plan was to raise $1,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which he accomplished in around nine months by selling his paintings on social media and at local art shows. Since then, he's broadened his reach to benefit other organizations, including the childhood cancer nonprofit Compass to Care and the MakeAWish Foundation. He's raised over $16,000 for charities so far. Arsh's artwork is often colorful and cheery, as one might expect from a youngster, but it showcases the impressive technique of a gifted artist. Some pieces are more abstract in nature; others feature realistic renditions (视觉形象) of flowers and animals. They range in size and complexity, and, accordingly, price. Small paintings might sell for $10 while larger canvases, up to five feet, have gone for $800. Last year, Arsh won The Diana Award, an honor presented by a UK charity founded on Princess Diana's belief that young people have the power to change their country. And the young artist has advice for other kids who want to make a difference. “Helping others doesn't have to be, like, money or anything. It can be your time, your skills, your talent,” he says, “and overall, just be kind to other people to make their day better.” 【解题导语】 本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了热爱画画的阿尔什将自己的作品卖掉后把钱捐给慈善机构,并获得了英国慈善机构颁发的荣誉的故事。 1.What made Arsh interested in painting? Airlifted from their home in Launceston to hospital in Hobart, the twins, now happy and healthy twoyearolds, were delivered into the ICU to be cared for and monitored. A gift from the Tasmanian branch of Octopus (章鱼) for a Preemie (早产儿) for them was a light in the dark. “These stories really do remind us why we all spend so much time and our own money making these octopuses,” Bianca, the cofounder of the project, tells Woman's Day. “It means the world to me that I can do something in whatever small way to make the journey for the babies and parents just that little bit easier.I believe if we can help others, no matter how small a way it is, then we should.” The eightlegged creatures are specially created to calm and comfort early newborns. “In instances where the babies can't be held for weeks, or even months, the familiarity of the parents' scent (气味) on the octopuses can help with the bonding process because babies already know it as a safe scent when parents can finally hold them,” Bianca says. The volunteer project began after a nurse reached out to Bianca to create a prototype of octopus she could take into hospital for a trial. “It took me a good four to five months to teach myself how to write a pattern and get it approved,” explains Bianca, who creates the handmade helpful octopuses for no cost to families in need. “I started making them as fast as I could, but I wasn't able to make the amount they needed.” Soon Bianca met the group's another cofounder Andrea Carey and the pair started creating the creatures together in their spare time. “I have always enjoyed being creative and my imagination runs wild with colour combinations,” says Bianca, her social media page Octopus for a Preemie Tasmania accumulating more than 2,000 followers.“It makes my day!” 【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一个志愿者项目通过提供章鱼模型来安抚早产新生儿,这一项目受到了新生儿父母的欢迎。 5.What is the purpose of the project?
