I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued traditions.Speaking to strangers was not encouraged.People were most hospitable (好客的) and friendly—but only once they had been introduced to new people.
However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.
I experienced Italian hospitality firsthand on a crowded railway carriage traveling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence.Sinking gratefully into an empty seat,I was berated (斥责) in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat—it had not been “spare” after all.I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he,too, realized my genuine mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the rest of the journey. The other passengers of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them.I feel that if this had been in England,a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.
Transport was also obvious in the differences I noticed between English and American culture.I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence.Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to disturb someone else's privacy. However, when I traveled across the United States, whether by plane or Greyhound bus, I was never short of conversation.Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself, which was usually a pleasant way to kill time. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.

We all know that unpleasant feeling when we're talking about something interesting and halfway through our sentence we're interrupted (打断).But was that really an interruption? The answer depends on whom you ask, according to new research led by Katherine Hilton from Stanford University.
Using a set of controlled audio clips (音频片段),Hilton surveyed 5,000 American English speakers to better understand what affects people's perceptions (认知) of interruptions. She had participants listen to audio clips and then answer questions about whether the speakers seemed to be friendly and engaged, listening to one another,or trying to interrupt.
Hilton found that American English speakers have different conversational styles. She identified two groups:high and low intensity speakers. High intensity speakers are generally uncomfortable with moments of silence in conversation and consider talking at the same time a sign of engagement. Low intensity speakers find it rude to talk at the same time and prefer people speak one after another in conversation.
The differences in conversational styles became obvious when participants listened to audio clips in which two people spoke at the same time but were agreeing with each other and stayed on topic,Hilton said. The high intensity group reported that conversations where people spoke at the same time when expressing agreement were not interruptive but engaged and friendlier than the conversations with moments of silence in between speaking turns. In contrast, the low intensity group perceived any amount of simultaneous (同时发生的) chat as a rude interruption, regardless of what the speakers were saying.
“People care about being interrupted, and those small interruptions can have a massive effect on the overall communication,” Hilton said. “Breaking apart what an interruption means is essential if we want to understand how humans interact with each other.”

29.What do participants of the study need to do?
A.Record an audio clip.
B.Answer some questions.
C.Listen to one another.
D.Have a chat with a friend.
B 解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“She had participants...trying to interrupt.”可知,这项研究的参与者需要在听完音频后回答一些问题。
30.What do low intensity speakers think of simultaneous chat?
A.It's important. B.It's interesting.
C.It's inefficient. D.It's impolite.
D 解析:推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Low intensity speakers find it rude to talk at the same time”和第四段中的“the low intensity group perceived...a rude interruption”可推知,对于低强度聊天者来说,同时聊天是不礼貌的。
31.What can we learn from Hilton's research?
A.Conversational styles affect perceptions of interruptions.

Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively, a skill known as emotional intelligence(EI), do better at school than their lessskilled classmates, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
“It's not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school,” said Carolyn MacCann, lead author of the study. MacCann and her colleagues analyzed data from more than 160 studies, representing more than 42,000 students from 27 countries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age from primary school to college. The researchers found that students with higher EI tended to get higher grades and better achievement test scores than those with lower EI scores. This finding held true even when controlling intelligence and personality factors. What was most surprising to the researchers was the association held despite different ages.
As for why EI can affect academic performance, MacCann believes a number of factors may come into play. “Students with higher EI may be better able to manage negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom and disappointment, which can negatively affect academic performance,” she said.“Also, these students may be better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships with teachers, classmates and family, all of which are important to academic success.” Finally, the skills required for EI,such as understanding human motivation and emotion, may overlap with (与……重叠) the skills required to master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas, according to MacCann.
However, MacCann cautions against widespread testing of students to identify and target those with low EI as it may stigmatize (给……打上烙印) those students. Instead, she recommends interventions that involve the whole school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teachers' wellbeing and emotional skills.“Programs that integrate emotional skill development into the existing curriculum would be beneficial, as research suggests that training works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists,” she said.“Increasing skills for everyone—not just those with low EI—would benefit everyone.”
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,情商高,即能够有效管理自己情绪的学生,在学业上表现得更好。
32.What surprised the researchers most during MacCann's study?
A.Intelligence mattered more than EI for academic success.
B.EI had an effect on learning for students of all ages.
C.College students benefited more from EI than pupils.
D.Personality affected academic performance greatly.
B 解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The students ranged in age from primary school to college.” 以及“What was most surprising to the researchers was the association held despite different ages.”可知,情商对所有年龄段的学生的学习都有影响。
33.What can be a reason for the conclusion of MacCann's study?
A.HighEI students hardly experience negative emotions.
B.HighEI students seldom develop social relationships.
C.HighEI students tend to easily focus on their study.
D.HighEI students have helpful skills for certain subjects.
34.What does MacCann suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Equipping teachers with emotional skills.
B.Designing tests to identify students with low EI.
C.Developing special programs for students with low EI.
D.Employing emotional specialists to give training to students.
A 解析:细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“she recommends interventions...emotional skills”以及“training works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists”可知,麦卡恩建议培养教师的情感技能。
35.What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Should EI Be Taught in School?
B.How Can Students Develop High EI?
C.Students with High EI Do Better in School
D.Good Students Do Better in Managing Emotions
C 解析:标题归纳题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段内容可知,本文主要介绍了情商高的学生学业表现更好。因此,C项最适合作本文标题。

One possible version:
Dear Tom,
I'm really sorry to hear that you have some trouble in getting on with your classmates. I know you're upset and I can relate to that.
It's known to us all that conflicts and culture shock are common for people living abroad. So I advise you to learn about Chinese culture so that you could adjust to the new surroundings. You can participate in school activities to interact with your classmates in a relaxed setting and show them that you're making an effort to integrate with the class.
I wish you will have a good time in China.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dad got a new job. We had to pack up and move away from everything we were familiar with. There were so many changes. We came from the north, and now we were almost as far south as possible. We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved during the summer vacation, so I didn't have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends? Would I fit in? Would I survive in this strange new world? Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn't know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
Then one day, a tall boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him—he was the star player! “Hey,” he said. “You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practicing. The subjects, especially English, really bother us.Do you think you could help us?”“Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would,” I replied with surprise. We made the deal with an exchange of smiles.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Something gradually changed after that.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Something gradually changed after that. We got along quite well. We were often seen to study in the library as a group or walk to classes together. I tried to help whenever possible and shared my learning experience with them. I was really excited when I found learning methods which were suitable for them. With our joint efforts, their English performance improved significantly. The basketball players expressed their heartfelt gratitude to me after seeing their grades.
Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball. I learned a lot of basketball skills from them and became better and better at the sport, which made me have the confidence to take part in basketball games with them sometimes. Through basketball, I made more friends. Gradually, I became more outgoing and had the courage to communicate with others on my own initiative. Not only did I help the basketball players, but they changed me.
