Jules Verne’s novel, Around the World in 80 Days, has inspired many people to travel around the world in unusual ways. It has also inspired several films, TV series, theatre productions and even a board game.
So where did Jules Verne get the idea? Jules Verne told a reporter that he had been sitting in a café in Paris one day when he saw a newspaper advertisement for the first ever tourist trip around the world in 1872.
In Jules Verne’s story, a wealthy English gentleman, Phileas Fogg, accepts a bet of £20,000 that he can travel round the world in 80 days. Phileas Fogg is a man who is very hard to please. For example, he fires his servant because he brings him some water to wash in that is 29°C instead of 30°C. He has a very strict routine (惯例) and he follows it to the letter every day.
Fogg employs a new servant, Passepartout, and on Wednesday, 2nd October, 1872, they set off on the journey round the world. While he’s in India, Fogg falls in love with an Indian girl, Aouda. The journey ends back in London with Fogg believing that he has arrived a day too late and that he has lost the bet. He tells Aouda that he cannot marry her now, as he's too poor. Passepartout learns that they have got the date wrong. The party travelled east, so they gained a day. Fogg hurries to his club and arrives there in time to win the bet and the story ends happily.

Huang Xuhua, a great Chinese scientist, passed away on February 6th, 2025. But his great achievements and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep lighting up China’s way forward.
Huang Xuhua was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. When he was young, he saw the hard times of the country. It made him study hard and make a promise to make the country strong with his knowledge.
In the 1950s, when China started to develop nuclear submarines (核潜艇), which was a very difficult job at that time, Huang Xuhua stepped forward and took up the challenge. When I learned I’d be doing Double 11 street interviews, I was excited but also nervous. To get ready, I researched the latest Double 11 news, prepared seven short questions, and practiced speaking with my classmates.
During the interviews, I faced some challenges. Many people were too busy to talk. Some were shy and only gave short answers. But one person stood out—a 35-year-old woman. She told me she used to buy enough things for six months during Double 11, but now she only buys snacks. “I would rather spend the money on family trips,” she said. This surprised me. I used to think people bought less because prices were not as good or they had less money. But she taught me that some people now care more about experiences than material things.
In the end, most people felt Double 11 was not as popular as before. They said prices weren’t as low, and that people’s shopping h… had changed. People no longer buy a lot of things at once. Instead, they focus on what they truly need or spend on other activities.

The story is an easy read. The humorous twists and turns of the plot keep you entertained throughout. It is a romantic adventure story that I would strongly recommend to all my friends.

To keep the project secret, he and his teammates stopped getting in touch with the outside world, even their families. During the design process (过程), they met a lot of problems. They couldn’t get help from foreign experts, so they could only depend on their own research by using basic tools like abacus (算盘). Another big challenge was to make sure the submarine could stay safely underwater. After many tests, they gradually solved these problems.
Finally, in the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. This made China one of the few countries that had this ability. Huang Xuhua didn’t stop after this big success. He went on to help develop submarine technology. His hard work won him many honors, including the “Medal of the Republic” in 2019.
We, especially the young people, should learn from his spirit. Let’s take on the responsibility, face challenges bravely, and work hard to make China stronger. In this way, his spirit will live on forever.

From this experience, I learned to see things in more than one way. I also learned to listen patiently, waiting for others to finish talking before I ask my questions.

On April 26, 2022, Italian traveler Vienna Cammarota set off from Venice. The 72-year-old then planned to go to China on foot. This meant she would travel about 22,000 kilometers and walk through 15 countries. The journey would be full of challenges, but she wasn't afraid.

The wildfire in Los Angeles burned Charlotte Tragos’s home to the ground. Marks of her childhood heights on the kitchen wall, family treasures in cupboards, and her family’s photos were all gone.
“It was a pretty special house,” said Tragos, who ran away with her parents, her younger sister and their three dogs when the fire broke out on January 7th, 2025. All the teenager took with her was her high school diploma (毕业证书).
A few days after the fire, Tragos’s friend shared with her a video: a L. A.artist offering to create, for free, watercolor paintings of people’s homes before they were burnt. Tragos contacted the artist, Jordan Heber, asking if she could paint Tragos’s home.“I want to do it as a surprise to my family,” she wrote. Tragos sent a photo to Heber, who completed a painting of Tragos’s home in three days.“A home is more than just a house where we keep our things,” said Heber.
Heber works as a designer and paints in her free time, usually charging $300 to $400 for a house drawing. After the fire began, Heber kept thinking about how she could help. Seeing another local artist offering free house drawings, she was encouraged. “This will be my way to help,” said Heber.
She posted her offer on social media, and messages poured in. Heber has painted over fifty houses, including one for Jeremy Wineberg, whose family home was also destroyed.
“It was a place you never wanted to leave,” said Wineberg. When the fire came, he escaped with his two dogs, taking only a blanket. “Heber’s painting means the world to me. I’ve lost almost everything, but a piece like this—something that brings back what ‘home’ meant—gives me strength.”
Heber is glad that people find her paintings meaningful, saying, “Hopefully it encourages others to use their talents to help people.”

To keep someone from getting hurt, we ask Alex to cut them into slices and give everyone a fair number. The rest of us keep an eye on him to make sure he’s not stealing any for himself. 4

I studied harder than ever. In university, I tested 173 times to find the safest mix for bridges. I measured again and again until my mistake was smaller than a hair.
Years later, after a big earthquake, I checked cracked (裂缝的) bridges while the ground was still shaking. A tiny crack—only 0.3 mm—could be seen by nobody, but I remembered my two lost points. We fixed the bridge and saved many lives.
Now I. visit schools and show students my old exam paper with the tiny mistake. I tell them, “Small details matter. A single point or line can build a bridge strong enough to last a hundred years.”

“Who are you?” she asked.
“I... I found this,” he said, holding out the card.
The woman — Elsa — looked at it. “It must be a mistake,” she said. “But since you’re here... would you like to come in?”
