During my drive home, I kept telling myself that I would find work again in a short time — I am confident in my experience and abilities. This is the same belief as I tried to teach my son. The basketball game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan’s team still trailing.I saw the determination on his, as well as his teammates’ faces as they fought back to not only tie with the other team, but then go ahead by three points. Then,a player from the other team made an unbelievable shot to tie the score again. With the game in a tie and few seconds on the clock, Nathan found himself with the ball and with skills and confidence, he proceeded to make a basket with a defender hanging all over him.The defender was warned for a foul (犯规). As Nathan stood at the foul line preparing for a shot that would make his team three points ahead, I saw the determination on his face. There was no room for self⁃doubt.Nathan was able to tune out all the distractions and nail the free throw with such skill. It was as if he had done it a thousand times.  As I sat there, my heart bursting with pride, it dawned on me.I had taught him perseverance in the face of adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self⁃doubt and feeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He will play in the finals, and it doesn’t matter if he wins or loses. At this moment, we both won. 4.What did the author estimate his son’s team would be like at first? D.Easy⁃going and warm⁃hearted. B。 6.What does the underlined phrase “tune out” in paragraph 4 mean? A.Ignore. B.Focus. C.Create. A.The Benefits of Playing Basketball B.It Matters Whether to Win or Lose C.A Lesson in Life and Basketball D.Father and Son in Life 解析:选C 标题归纳题。 C。 C Thinking of getting your child to take up a sport that involves (牵涉) a coach or instructor? Good news: A new study finds that children who take part in organized physical activity at a young age are less likely to have emotional difficulties by the time they turn 12. “The elementary school years are a key time in child development,” said Frederic N.Brier, a psycho⁃education professor who led the study, published in Pediatric Research.“And every parent wants to raise a well⁃adjusted child.” Researchers followed a birth group over time to examine whether continual participation in organized sport from 6 to 10 would lower risks related with emotional distress (情绪困扰), anxiety, shyness, social pullback at the age of 12.Their goal was to test this question as critically as possible by eliminating (排除) pre⁃existing child or family conditions that could offer an alternative explanation. To do this, Brier and his team examined data from a group of children born in 1997 or 1998 who are part of the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development. From age 6 to 10, mothers reported whether their children participated in organized physical activity. At the age of 12, teachers reported on the children’s levels of emotional distress, anxiety, shyness, and social pullback at school. “The results revealed that children who participated frequently from 6 to 10 showed fewer instances of those factors at the age of 12 than their peers who did not join in physical activity in a continual way,” said Brier.“We found these benefits above and beyond pre⁃existing individual and family characteristics.” “Getting kids actively involved in organized sport seems to promote global development. This involvement appears to be good on a socio⁃emotional level and not just because of physical benefits.Being less emotionally distressed at the key stage between elementary and high school is a priceless benefit for children, as they are about to enter a much larger universe with bigger academic challenges. This research supports current parental guidelines promoting children’s involvement in physical activity,” Brier concluded. 8.Why did Brier’s team follow a birth group over time? A.To check their health. B.To test their guess. C.To learn about their study. D.To find out suitable sports. 根据第三段中“Researchers followed a birth ...at the age of 12.” 9.How did the researchers reach their conclusion? A.By analyzing data. B.By doing survey on teachers. C.By doing experiments. D.By organizing physical activities. 根据第四段中“To do this, Brier and his team examined data from a group of children born in 1997 or 1998 who are part of the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development.” 故选A项。 10.What does Brier think of the results? A.They are of little value. B.They need further testing. C.They are against their guess. D.They are up to his expectation. 根据第三段中“Their goal was to test this question as critically as possible by eliminating (排除) pre⁃existing child or family conditions that could offer an alternative explanation.” 11.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.It’s easy to raise a well⁃adjusted child B.Organized sport promotes emotional difficulties C.School education is critical for child development D.Sticking to organized sport can help kids adjust 解析:选D 标题归纳题。 D We often get into arguments with others and probably think we’re right, even if we don’t have all the facts. According to a recent psychology study, people tend to assume they have all of the information that they need to make decisions — even if they don’t. This is called the Illusion of Information Adequacy, as described in a PLOS One journal article on October 9th, 2024. In the study, researchers from Ohio State, Stanford, surveyed 1,261 Americans online. Group One read an article that only gave reasons why the school should cooperate with another that has better water. Group Two read an article that only gave reasons for the schools staying separate and hoping for other solutions to the problem. Group Three was the control group that read all of the reasons from the above articles. They found that the majority from Group One and Group Two still believed that they had enough information to make a good decision about what to do. Most said that they would follow the advice in the article they read. Those from Group One were significantly more likely to recommend the schools cooperate, while readers from Group Two were significantly more likely to recommend that the schools remain separate. About 55 percent of the control group recommend the schools cooperate. The participants who had half the information also said that they thought most people would make the same decision as they did. The team calls this belief that we are correct — even when we don’t have all of the information — the Illusion of Information Adequacy. Fletcher describes it as “The less our brain knows, the more confident it is that it knows all it needs to know, which leads to overconfident decisions and judgments, when we are missing necessary information.” In a follow⁃up study with 100 readers from Group One and Group Two, the research tried to know what the participants did after hearing both sides. At first, they shared arguments and reasoned together. Eventually, these arguments and reasoning resulted in them saying “That sounds right.” According to Fletcher, one of the best ways to fight the Illusion of Information Adequacy when disagreeing with someone is to pause and ask, “Is there something I’m overlooking that could help me understand their viewpoint better?” This can help reduce interpersonal conflict. 12.What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about? A.The content of the article. B.The design of the survey. C.The cause of the research. D.The reactions of participants. 13.What does the Illusion of Information Adequacy lead to? A.Making decisions quickly. B.Feeling much too confident. C.Knowing enough information. D.Always agreeing with others. 根据第五段“Fletcher describes it as ‘The less ...missing necessary information.’” 14.What did the follow⁃up study focus on? A.The research result. B.The number of participants. C.The size of the groups. D.The process of changing minds. 根据倒数第二段“In a follow⁃up study ... after hearing both sides.” 15.What does Fletcher suggest to reduce conflict? A.Agreeing with others’ ideas. B.Focusing on new information. C.Ignoring deeply⁃held beliefs. D.Pausing to consider other views. French explorer Jacques Cartier is known mainly for exploring the St.Lawrence River and giving Canada its name. When I moved to a new city, I was excited about trying new foods, visiting new places, meeting new people and having new experiences. But, I also felt lonely and really wanted to make new friends.I joined a book club and a dinner group. But after a few months, I still felt like I hadn’t made any close friends. One day, someone asked me if I wanted to run in a half marathon.Without thinking, I said, “Sure, count me in!” A half marathon is 13.1 miles, which is a lot longer than the three miles I usually ran.I was a bit scared, but also excited. After the shock wore off, I started to learn everything about running a half marathon.I even bought my first pair of really good running shoes. They were the most expensive shoes I’d ever owned.I was ready to start training with them. My new running friends picked me up at my house, and we started to jog together.I took it slow at first, running one mile, then two. They taught me how to run properly and how to drink enough water.I learned new words like carbo⁃loading, strides, and electrolytes.I slowly built up to running three, four and five miles.Running seven miles straight felt like climbing a really high mountain, and I started to love the feeling I got after a long run. The day of the race finally came.         All the training I had done was now paying off. The day of the race finally came.I stood at the starting line, my heart pounding with excitement and nerves. The announcer counted down, and then the race began.I took off at a sprint, my legs pumping and my arms swinging as I tried to find my rhythm. As I ran, I could feel the sweat starting to bead on my forehead. The sun beat down on me, but I pushed through, focusing on the sound of my breath and the rhythm of my feet hitting the pavement.I passed other runners, feeling a surge of excitement each time I passed someone. As I approached the final stretch, I gave it everything I had left.My legs felt like lead, but I pushed through the pain.I could see the finish line in the distance, and it fueled my determination. All the training I had done was now paying off.I crossed the finish line first! The crowd cheered me up as I crossed the finish line, and I collapsed to the ground, exhausted but delighted.Everyone applauded for me and congratulated me on winning the game.A feeling of excitement and satisfaction seized me.I was really grateful for the tremendous changes that running had brought to my body and mind.
