Peter said the moment they finally had a look at the famous Great Wall after a year and a half of cycling 30 miles a day was “really exciting”.At the end of their journey, the special pair didn’t fly home but instead chose to book a cabin (舱) inside a 400m⁃long container ship. The final part was a three⁃week voyage from Singapore across the Indian Ocean and into the Mediterranean Sea before arriving at Southampton. “You never know what the day is going to bring. All you know is that you are going to get on your bike and cycle.Every day is an adventure and every day is new.Overall, the experience is absolutely unbelievable,” Peter said. Peter and Chris initially set out to cycle from Britain in January 2017 but were forced home. They had cycled all the way to Hungary when Peter slipped on tiles and broke his leg. After seven months of recovery, the couple set out again in Britain. They finally arrived in China in November 2018. Both Peter and Chris agreed that the best part of the entire trip was coming across the kindness of strangers along the way, many of whom invited the couple for food and drink.Chris said, “It was a wonderful experience, particularly wonderful because of the amazing people we met along the way.” 4.How did the couple go back to their home after the trip to China? A.By cycling. B.By train. C.By plane. B.To break the world record. C.To go across 16 countries by bike. B.They ran out of money. C.They met with a heavy snow. D.Peter fell ill suddenly in Hungary. 7.What’s the best part of the trip for the couple? A.The beautiful scenes. B.The help from others. C.The delicious food and drink. D.The kindness from other cyclists. C Many people believe that modern lifestyles have caused humans to sleep less than our ancestors did in earlier times. However, a review of 54 global sleep studies shows that people in small, traditional communities actually sleep fewer hours than those in modern industrial societies. Common beliefs suggest that smartphones and other devices have created a “sleep⁃loss problem” in recent years. But many past studies asking people to report their sleep hours may be unreliable. Newer research using special devices to measure physical activity or brain waves finds no clear drop in sleep time over the last 50 years. A 2016 study of 168 research projects even showed no change in average sleep length since the 1970s. Earlier studies mainly focused on industrial nations. Now, scientists can use wrist⁃worn activity trackers to study sleep in traditional societies. For example, hunter⁃gatherer groups in southern Africa average just 6.7 hours of nightly sleep. Researchers compared sleep habits between industrial societies and small traditional communities. Their analysis covered 54 studies with direct sleep measurements from 866 healthy adults. They found that traditional groups slept for 6.4 hours on average per night, while industrial societies averaged 7.1 hours. They also found that people in non⁃industrialized societies were asleep for 74 percent of the time they were in bed, compared with 88 percent in industrial societies, a measure known as sleep efficiency (效率). Samson explains that safer sleeping conditions in modern societies may explain these differences. “We have improved safety in our bedrooms,” he says. “People no longer need to fend off dangers like wild animals or conflicts at night.”  To improve sleep quality, experts suggest maintaining consistent bedtimes, avoiding screens before bed, and creating a dark, quiet bedroom environment. Additionally, reducing caffeine intake and practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing can help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. 8.Why might newer research on sleep hours be reliable? A.It relied on self⁃reports. B.It used activity trackers. C.It collected data from a large database. D.It contained data from industrialized nations. 根据第二段中“But many past studies ...over the last 50 years.”和第三段中“Now, scientists can use wrist⁃worn activity trackers to study sleep in traditional societies.” 9.How does the author show the sleep hours of both societies in paragraph 4? A.By giving examples. B.By stating arguments. C.By providing research results. D.By comparing different studies. 根据第四段中“They found that ...a measure known as sleep efficiency (效率).” 10.What does the underlined phrase “fend off” in paragraph 5 mean? A.Defend against. B.Give up. C.Look after. D.Come across. 根据画线部分的上文“We have improved safety in our bedrooms”和下文“dangers like wild animals or conflicts at night”可知,现代卧室更安全,这意味着人们不再需要抵御野生动物或应对夜间冲突,故画线部分意思应该是“抵御”,与Defend against“防御”意思一致。 11.What is the author’s purpose in writing this text? A.To promote the use of activity trackers. B.To present research findings against common beliefs. C.To provide practical advice for improving sleep quality. D.To criticize modern lifestyles for causing sleep disorders. D Are you chillaxed enough? Recently, having a sense of ease seems to have become one of the most important qualities that a person should have to be seen as successful and attractive. The discussion arose from a previous incident. A family’s luggage (行李) was rejected for shipment, but they continued their journey as if nothing bad had happened. A girl witnessed their calm attitude in difficult circumstances and shared the story online. She described their attitude as being “chillaxed”, meaning staying calm in the face of barriers. With the word gaining more attention, an increasing number of people have shared their chillaxed lives online. In psychology, maintaining a sense of ease is similar to “psychological resilience”, which refers to the ability to effectively adjust and adapt to tough situations, particularly by being mentally, emotionally and behaviorally flexible under pressure. It stresses a drive for success, steadily advancing toward a goal, and being prepared to accept any outcome without complaining. In both work and study, many people get anxious or even collapse when faced with short⁃term bottlenecks. Therefore, they hurriedly seek immediate changes, which, in most cases, prevents them from achieving the desired result. Rather than going after immediate outcomes, it’s more significant to maintain steady, gradual progress and adopt a long⁃term mindset. Interestingly, as the Internet becomes filled with hashtags (标签) like “only those who are chillaxed are attractive”, many people are beginning to feel anxious because they don’t fit that description. Still, it’s important to note that while a state of ease may be favorable, there’s nothing wrong with not being chillaxed. Indeed, many people achieve their goals by pushing themselves to their limits, though feeling frustrated by pressure from time to time. But as long as you are fighting for your ideal life, you’re definitely someone who’s appealing and respectable no matter whether you’re chillaxed or not. 12.Why is the family’s experience mentioned in the text? A.To introduce the origin of the word “chillaxed”. B.To show the family’s ability to stay chillaxed. C.To highlight the importance of being chillaxed. D.To argue against the rejection of luggage shipment. 13.What’s highlighted in psychological resilience? A.Slow recovery from challenges. B.Dependence on external factors. C.Flexibility and steady progress. D.Seeking quick fixes to problems. 14.What’s the author’s attitude towards being chillaxed? A.Doubtful. B.Objective. C.Dismissive. D.Unclear. 15.Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.A Chillaxed Attitude: Shortcut Towards Success. B.Remaining Chillaxed Helps to Settle Conflicts. C.Why Being Chillaxed Does Not Guarantee Happiness. D.Being Chillaxed: The Art of Psychological Strength. You probably know you should exercise, get enough sleep and eat right. But you are telling yourself that you don’t have the time.If you are wondering how to develop healthy habits, these pieces of advice will help you feel great. As you can see, an increasing number of students have developed an unhealthy lifestyle, such as staying up late, rushing through meals, taking little physical exercise and so forth. Not only will these bad living habits do harm to our health, but they will have a negative impact on our study. Hence, it’s high time that we should take immediate action and say no to the unhealthy lifestyle. First of all, we should form the good habit of keeping early hours. As the saying goes, early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.In addition, we’re supposed to take meals slowly and regularly, which contributes to good digestion and health.Last but not least, it’s strongly recommended that we should spare as much time as possible to work out. Only in this way can we live a happy and healthy life and make our study more productive. Experiences at a Sports Meet I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school.I won the B Division long jump and was a decent runner. As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet. The meeting lasted two days.I had no events scheduled for the first day so I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. We weren’t allowed to go near the VIP pavilion (看台) as kids, so I had to observe the proceedings from afar. Large tents were provided for the young competitors opposite the VIP pavilion on the other side of the track. My school team was assigned the last tent that was farthest from the track. It was just our luck but we made the best use of what we had. The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50m relay later in the afternoon.I was a pretty good jumper and no one could outclass me.The competition began, and I jumped over 4 meters! That was quite the accomplishment. I won the gold medal in the long jump. All my schoolmates cheered for me and I promised to win in the 8×50m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg.The race time arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a few minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched, holding my breath, as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place. My turn arrived and I took the stick and began to run.       I felt terrible for letting the team down due to my fault. My turn arrived and I took the stick and began to run.The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner. Then disaster struck! The stick flew out of my hand when I moved forward.Because I was young and flexible, I was able to quickly pick it up and continue the race. However, the accident cost us valuable time. When I handed the stick to the next runner, I knew everything was lost.He ran with all his might, but it was too late. We’d blown our chance at a medal. I felt terrible for letting the team down due to my fault. Not knowing what to say to my teammates, I cried sadly.I was so guilty and ashamed. However, instead of blaming the failure on me, my teammates gathered around me and kept comforting me that what was done was done, for which we had no regret. From the experience, I learned about failure and success and how to deal with them.I have been bearing that lesson I learned that day in mind ever since and it urges me to move forward.
