Our house was noisier since my stepsister and stepmother moved in — Jen and Mum. I called her Mum, but the word felt 1 — I still missed my own mother, who passed away long ago. So much had changed.
“Would you take Jen skating?” Dad gently pushed her forward.
“I guess.” I sighed, remembering 2 my dad taught me to build a snowman on Thanksgiving—step by step, with so much care.
“Thanks. We’ll make that snowman later,” he 3 .
“Here!” Mum offered some cookies as we took our skates. “No, thanks,” I turned without looking at her. I still couldn’t help feeling it was 4 who changed everything.
Out in the street, it was freezing. Jen and I just walked 5 . It was so quiet that I had to say something, “Did you often go skating?”
Jen 6 her head. “Not really. Mum and I always visited lovely turkeys on a farm.”
“No turkey farms here,” I replied. “Too cold.”
Jen sighed, looking at me 7 .
Until then I realised that I never cared how 8 Jen was. She not only had a new stepbrother and a stepfather, but a new town and home. She had more 9 than me.
Suddenly, I didn’t feel sorry for myself 10 I got something more important to do—thinking of some way to help Jen.
Soon Jen and I were back in our yard, playing with snow. We made a small snowball and topped it 11 a bigger one as the head and the body of a snow turkey.
Then Jen built a fan behind it, making a perfect tail.
Our parents came out. Jen ran to them, laughing, “Can you tell what it is?”
“Certainly,” smiled Mum. “It’s the biggest snow turkey I’ve seen.”
Mum came up. “Thanks for 12 Jen.” She tied a scarf around me. Something warm touched me and I began understanding how much she cared about 13 in our new family.
Our neighbours stopped by, “Did you make that yourselves?”
“Yep. It’s a family 14 ,” I answered, and Dad smiled.
Yes. A tradition was just what our new family needed. It was already helping to 15 all of our different pieces together.

That’s a cool thing about Jeff. He always looks on the 5 side of almost everything.
We went out, leaving the drawings on the table. We laughed as we returned. When I opened the door, my heart nearly stopped. Right there, Becky was coloring 6 pictures. “ 7 Becky!” I rushed to her, but it was too late. Have you ever got into an argument with your friends over the last cake at a party or the last candy in the box? 1 will you do when there’s only one best thing?
Last week, Jasmine, Kaylie, and I went to an Arts and Crafts Fair. We loved 2 but couldn’t afford most things. They stopped at an ice cream cart. Jasmine wanted a coconut ice cream, Kaylie liked strawberry, and I wanted banana. We couldn’t decide which one to buy and 3 to look around first.
We saw pretty hats, toys, and yo-yos (悠悠球), but everything was too 4 . Jasmine was really interested in a yo-yo, but even that yo-yo cost too much. Just as we felt sad, we found a table with cheap bracelets (手链). A kind 5 named Chai let us try them on.
Then we saw a bracelet 6 a shiny pink elephant bead (珠子)! Suddenly, when we learned that there was only one left, we all wanted 7 and argued loudly. “I saw it first!” “No, I did!” Chai said it was the 8 one and cost twice as much as a normal one. 9 sharing ideas, we left angrily.
I walked back to the ice cream cart to cool down. Kaylie and Jasmine 10 showed up! We stood 11 in line, but eating our favorite ice creams made us happy again. We talked and decided to forget the elephant bracelet.
We returned to Chai’s table, hoping to find a favorite normal one. Just then, the seller 12 us a box of pink elephant beads! They weren’t on bracelets yet, so he sold them at a low price. Jasmine told us she had string (线) and beads at home, 13 we could make our own bracelets by ourselves with the beads. We got the best things without too much money!
If you argue over one cupcake, try cutting it to 14 . If that’s not possible, don’t get angry. Sometimes taking a break helps too! 15 minds find creative solutions. For us, the answer was even better than we imagined. Sometimes stepping back turns “only one” into “enough for everyone.”

Our neighbours stopped by, “Did you make that yourselves?”

根据后文“the one who reaches the top of the hill first wins the race”可知,此处是提议“比赛”。
根据“he ran fast toward the hill top”可知,男孩是兴奋的。

根据“I stop now, I will fall behind”可知,此处是条件关系。

根据“caught up with him”可知,父亲追上后“超过”了男孩。 故选A。

根据“we shouldn’t ignore it...we are supposed to take action”可知,此处是“替代”关系。
