Beinao-1 uses a thin and soft electrode sheet. It can fit the brain comfortably. 4 it is put on the brain’s surface, it receives signals and sends them out. There’s also a small wireless device that can receive and translate the signals for a smart machine. With this “translator”, the machine can understand the thoughts from the brain and 5 . For example, if a disabled person thinks “I want to drink water”, a robotic arm can 6 a cup, fill it with water, lift it carefully to the person’s mouth, and finally put it back. In this way, Beinao-1 helps disabled people 7 things by thoughts.

Edison’s most famous invention is the light bulb. To make it, he 12 thousands of times. He tried one material after another, and each time the little light died out very soon. But he never 13 up. “I have not failed,” he said. “I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t 14 .” At last, in 1879, a small light bulb stayed bright for many hours, and the world was changed forever.
Today, the light bulb is 15 all over the world. It is hard to imagine our life 16 it. Edison’s story tells us that a great idea can be 17 into reality only through hard work. No success can be 18 easily.

Have you ever seen drones in the sky? What can they be used for? Can they 21 be used for taking fantastic photos? Can a small group of drones make railways 22 , and at the same time, help railway companies save money? That is the future of using today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to make sure that railways are safe for trains.
Drones have been used to 23 power lines already. They can do the same thing to check railway lines and other important things, 24 the correct position of the railway and turning points. The 25 they can be checked, the more railway safety, reliability (可靠性) and on-time performance (准点率) will be improved. Operations (操作) will be 26 and costs will be cut.
That includes huge savings and better protection of railway workers’ safety. It is said that European railways alone 27 around 20 billion euros a year on that, because they often send workers to check and repair the railway at night. That can be dangerous work 28 the help of drones.
By using the latest technologies, drones 29 can provide higher-value services for railways and explore mistakes in the railway before causing any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones don’t need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new idea. Very small drones with AI will travel ahead of the train and guide it without drivers. With their 30 to see ahead, they can find any problem, so that fast-moving trains will be able to react in time.

According to the United Nations, about 2.2 billion people around the world still don’t have enough drinking water. This serious problem has led scientists to look for new solutions.
Professor Omar Yaghi is one of the scientists. He has created a special device (装置). It can collect water from the air. Even in very dry places, like deserts, it can still work well. In a recent test in Death Valley, one of the hottest places on Earth, the device successfully collected water.
The secret lies in the special materials in the device. These materials can catch water vapour (水蒸气) from the air, even when the air is very dry. The device then turns the water vapour into clean and safe drinking water. Each device can make up to 1,000L of water a day. Besides, it consumes very little energy and can work without being connected to power systems.
Yaghi’s idea comes from his own childhood experiences. He grew up in a very dry place. People there received water only once every few weeks. These early experiences never left him. They made him realize how valuable water is and inspired him to find a better way to get it.
The device can help people in dry places and natural disaster areas. For example, after typhoons or floods, clean water is often hard to get. This device can provide water quickly in such situations. It brings hope to a lot of people and shows how science can help solve real-world problems.
41.How does the writer begin the text?
A.By telling a story. B.By introducing a fact.
C.By discussing a problem. D.By describing a scientist.
42.What does the success of the test in Death Valley show?
A.The device works best in hot areas.
B.The device needs heat to collect water.
C.The device needs more testing in the future.
D.The device can work in very hard conditions.
43.What does the underlined word “consumes” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Uses. B.Creates. C.Stores. D.Saves.
44.Why does the writer mention Yaghi’s childhood experiences?
A.To explain how he became a scientist.
B.To show why he chose the special materials.
C.To show how different he is from other scientists.
D.To explain why he wanted to solve water problems.
45.What’s the best title for the text?
A.The power of nature. B.A meaningful invention.
C.A serious real-world problem. D.The value of a great scientist.
