For Emma, PE class was the most difficult part. She didn’t mind the tiredness; what bothered her were the looks her classmates gave her. Emma was bigger than others of her age. A group of students often ran behind her, laughing and talking about how Emma ran.
“Just one more year,” Emma kept telling herself, “One more year and I’ll graduate (毕业) and won’t have to take this stupid PE class anymore.”
But everything changed when a girl called Kit joined the class. She had short hair, bright eyes, and a long scar (伤疤) across the left side of her face. She introduced herself, “Hi, everyone, I’m Kit. I love sports and fashion. You might be wondering about the scar. I got it when I fell off my bike. I see it as a cool mark now.” Emma listened in surprise. How could the girl be so confident?
During lunchtime, Emma was sitting at her usual table. Kit walked over to join Emma. Emma couldn’t believe such a confident girl would like to sit with her. She worked up the courage to share what was troubling her. “Hug yourself!” said Kit. Hearing that, Emma felt a wave of warmth wash over her. And she felt the weight lift off her shoulders.
It was time for PE class again, but this time Kit was with her. Emma discovered that true confidence comes from within, not from others’ words. In the beautiful sunshine, the two girls walked together—one with a scar on her face and the other with a body that she finally felt she owned.

One day, Andy was on his trip to business. While walking past a village, he saw many people busy with their work in a large field. At that moment, a young man who sat by the road caught his attention.
Andy wondered why the young man was free in such a busy season. Then he went up and asked, “Have you grown your vegetables?”
The young man shook his head and sighed, “Not yet! I’m worrying about the weather. If there is a storm, my vegetables may be destroyed. If it is too cold, the seeds may not come out from the ground at all. If it is too hot, the seeds may even go bad in the soil.”
Andy nodded his head and asked again, “Then, have you grown rice?” The young man thought for a while, and answered, “Not yet. I’m worried about the birds. They may eat the rice. I can’t take that risk.” Andy was very surprised. “So, what have you grown then?”
The farmer replied, “I haven’t grown anything. I am waiting for the best time! I must make sure that nothing is going to destroy my plants.”
Of course, the best time never came. And the young man didn’t get anything from the field at last.
In our life, many people may have the same problem. They have dreams, but they don’t take action because they worry too much about the difficulties in the future. However, if they don’t do anything, how can they achieve their dreams?

I am glad to hear that you are going to come to China during the Spring Festival.
During the Spring Festival, people watch the Spring Festival Gala, get lucky money, have a big family dinner, and greet parents and relatives. Also, you should know Chinese table manners. You’re not supposed to stick your chopsticks into the food. And you can’t start eating if there are old people at the table—they should eat first to show respect. When you meet someone for the first time, shake hands. When visiting friends, take small gifts like fruit or tea. These small actions will help you make friends easily.

Chinese knots (中国结) are very important in Chinese culture. They began as a form of traditional art in the Tang and Song Dynasties in China. They started to become popular in the Ming Dynasty. Long ago, they found their way to Japan and other Southeast Asian countries, and were well received there. Now they are regarded as one of the symbols of Chinese culture.
The Chinese word for knot is jie, which means “connection”. The pronunciation of jie is very close to that of ji, which means “good luck”. As a result, Chinese knots are used to express good wishes for happiness, love and good luck. They come in different sizes. Small ones are connected to clothes and gifts, while large ones are used to decorate (装饰) houses. Whether large or small, they are named after their shapes and uses. For example, Double Coin Knots are called Shuangqian jie, because they are in the shape of two ancient Chinese coins. They mean “Good things come in pairs”. Besides, Chinese knots are famous for their bright colors. Different colors have different traditional cultural meanings. Red means good luck and happiness; green means health; and yellow means wealth.
All in all, Chinese knots fully (完全地) show Chinese culture. These brightly colored knots also mean that people on the earth share a common future.
28. When did Chinese knots start to become popular?
A. In the Tang Dynasty. B. In the Song Dynasty. C. In the Ming Dynasty.
29. What color of Chinese knots means wealth?
A. Red. B. Yellow. C. Green.
30. What can we infer from the passage?

B. We can give Double Coin Knots to friends who meet two good things at the same time.
C. Chinese knots began as a form of traditional art before the Tang Dynasty.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Story of Chinese Knots
B The History of Chinese Knots
C. Chinese Knots Are the Symbol of Chinese Culture
