When she was 24 years old, Lucie Basch left a promising career at Nestlé and determined to build an app to fight food waste. She had zero coding (编码) knowledge, no marketing experience, and no funding. What she did have, however, was dissatisfaction with just how much good food winds up in the rubbish — about 30 percent of global production.
Food waste happens all along the supply chain, but another thing Basch did not have was specialized expertise in agriculture or mass production. So she focused on what she knew — the bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores typically threw out their items left over at the end of the day. If someone could connect that supply with needy eaters, the food could instead be sold at a sharp discount. The result would be a three-way win, with businesses earning bonus income, consumers getting exceptionally cheap meals, and food being redirected from landfills.
Basch, living in Norway at the time, hit the streets with flyers and sign-up sheets, persuading business owners to adopt an app that did not yet exist. “I made them the promise that it’s going to be as simple as throwing food away, but instead of putting it into a big garbage bag, you’re going to divide it into different bags,” Basch explained in her office in Paris. Before long, she linked up with a group of like-minded Danish professionals with the coding knowledge to make the app she had been promoting a reality, which was named “Too Good to Go”.
Today, Too Good to Go is the world’s largest marketplace for leftover food, operating in 19 countries with more than a hundred million registered users. It is also a certified eco-friendly company.
1. Why did Lucie Basch make up her mind to develop the app?
A. To launch a promising career.
B. To establish a food supply chain.
C. To address a severe food issue.
D. To pick up some coding knowledge.
2. What did Basch plan to do?
A. Recycle food waste from landfills.
B. Give business owners bonus income.
C. Make remains available to the needy.
D. Convince stores to offer a big discount.
3 How did Basch influence business owners?
A. By persuading them to use flyers.
B. By promising them financial benefits.
C. By asking them to put wasted food into a bag.
D. By requesting them to sort and bag the left food.
4. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Learning to build an app? Consult Coding Experts
B. Wanting Discounted Foods? Shop at the End of Day
C. Aiming to Dominate Market? Follow Basch’s Success
D. Emptying Your Leftover Food? Turn to Too Good to Go
C 2. C 3. D 4. D
根据第一段最后一句“What she did have, however, was dissatisfaction with just how much good food winds up in the rubbish — about 30 percent of global production. (然而,她所不满的是,竟然有如此多的优质食物最终被扔进了垃圾桶——约占全球产量的30%。)”可知,露西・巴施决心开发这款应用程序是因为她对大量食物被浪费感到不满,即想要解决严重的食物浪费问题。故选C项。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段后两句“If someone could connect that supply with needy eaters, the food could instead be sold at a sharp discount. The result would be a three-way win, with businesses earning bonus income, consumers getting exceptionally cheap meals, and food being redirected from landfills. (如果有人能将这些食品供应与有需求的食客联系起来,那么这些食品就可以大幅降价出售。结果将是三方共赢,企业获得额外收入,消费者能买到极其便宜的食物,同时食品也不会被送去填埋。)”可知,巴施计划将商家剩余的食物提供给有需求的人。故选C项。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。细节理解题。根据第三段第二句““I made them the promise that it’s going to be as simple as throwing food away, but instead of putting it into a big garbage bag, you’re going to divide it into different bags,” Basch explained in her office in Paris.(“我向他们承诺,这将和扔掉食物一样简单,但不是把食物放进一个大垃圾袋里,而是要把它分成不同的袋子,”Basch在她位于巴黎的办公室解释道。)”
Turn to Too Good to Go (处理剩余食物?求助于“TooGoodtoGo”)”既体现了应用程序的功能,又契合文章主题,适合用作标题。故选D项。

In a working-class neighborhood on the south side of El Paso, the tap, tap, tap of Jose Contreras’ hammer (锤子) echoes from inside the blue warehouse on Cotton Street. Nearby, Victor Rodriguez narrows his eyes as he gently moves one side of a boot top beneath the needle of an antique Singer sewing machine, creating a flame-shaped stitch (针脚) in clean white thread.
“These guys are some of the best in the world,” says Joey Sanchez, owner of the boot company CABOOTS, whose family has employed Contreras and Rodriguez for more than 30 years. But when he looks around the tiny shop on Cotton Street, he can’t help but remember the way it used to be. “When I was a kid, this place was loaded with bootmakers.” he says, recalling the noise created by their hammers, sanders, and sewing machines.
Today, Contreras and Rodriguez aren’t just the only bootmakers in the shop — even in their early 60s, they’re among the youngest bootmakers left in the business. There’s a name for craftsmen like them, according to Sanchez. Agujas de oro, or Golden Needles, are artisans who still know how to make boots the old-fashioned way. Many have been doing it since they were kids, growing up near the United States-Mexico border.
As big boot companies turned to technology to streamline production and reduce costs, producers in El Paso — where celebrities like Taylor Swift still arrive to pick out their flashy footwear — are struggling to replace these artisans when they retire or pass away. In fact, Agujas de oro are in such high demand around the Texas border town that many of them work at more than one shop.
“Shoemakers are a dying group,” Jose Sanchez says, nodding toward Rodriguez and Contreras, each preoccupied by the bit of leather in their hands. “You just can’t find guys like these anymore. All the stuff they do by hand, other people do with machines. But machines just don’t do it as well.”
5. What is the main purpose of the second paragraph?
A. To highlight the decline of bootmaking. B. To introduce Joey Sanchez’s childhood.
C. To showcase bootmaking techniques. D. To describe the work environment.
6. Why are Contreras and Rodriguez called “among the youngest” in their field?
A. They adopted new techniques. B. They started boot-making late
C. Most artisans have retired or died. D. The boot shop hired senior craftsmen.
7. What makes Agujas de oro highly valued?
A. Their reliance on mass production. B. Their contribution to reduced costs.
C. Their preference for famous clients. D. Their commitment to traditional skills.
8. What is Jose Sanchez’s attitude towards the future of shoemakers?
A. Hopeful. B. Pessimistic. C. Excited. D. Unconcerned.
【答案】5 A 6. C 7. D 8. B
根据第二段中Joey Sanchez回忆内容“When I was a kid, this place was loaded with bootmakers. (当我还是个孩子的时候,这个地方挤满了靴匠。)”可知,Joey Sanchez小时候靴匠云集,可推理出第二段通过对比过去靴匠云集的热闹场景与当下店铺里仅存几位工匠的现状,突出传统制靴行业的衰退。故选A项。
根据第四段“As big boot companies turned to technology to streamline production and reduce costs, producers in El Paso — where celebrities like Taylor Swift still arrive to pick out their flashy footwear — are struggling to replace these artisans when they retire or pass away. In fact, Agujas de oro are in such high demand around the Texas border town that many of them work at more than one shop.
第三段提到“Agujas de oro, or Golden Needles, are artisans who still know how to make boots the old-fashioned way. (“金针”工匠仍然懂得用传统方法制作靴子。)”以及最后一段进一步强调“All the stuff they do by hand, other people do with machines. But machines just don’t do it as well. (他们所有手工完成的工作,其他人都是用机器来做的。但机器就是无法做得像他们手工那样好。).”可知,他们的价值在于对传统手工技艺的坚守。故选D项。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Shoemakers are a dying group,” Jose Sanchez says, nodding toward Rodriguez and Contreras, each preoccupied by the bit of leather in their hands. “You just can’t find guys like these anymore. All the stuff they do by hand, other people do with machines. But machines just don’t do it as well.”

From sleeping in a spider-covered tent a mile up an Amazonian cliff face to completing one of the classic outdoor “lifetime” challenges in the space of a few months, Anna Taylor is making a name for herself in the adventure community. Still just 24, the climber is also a great advocate of British expeditions.
“The UK is actually really good for these things.” says Taylor, who in 2021 became the first woman to complete a self-powered round of the 83 routes that feature in the celebrated climbing book Classic Rock. “It can be underestimated compared to exotic (异国风情的) places, but if you get creative, it’s as good as anywhere,” she says.
“The Classic Rock challenge is the kind of thing people try to finish during their lives, a bit like walking the Wainwrights, but I doubted the capability to make it in summer. It was amazing and opened my eyes to UK climbing. I didn’t realize how challenging cycle touring would be with so much equipment. But it’s a great way to appreciate the landscape, and completing a long ride is as satisfying as getting to the top of a route.” Taylor explored a huge amount of the country in the process. She then completed another self-powered round, climbing the 100 routes detailed in the guide Mountain Rock. “It is really a physical challenge,” Taylor says.
Having come to the attention of one of the UK’s top adventurers, Leo Houlding, Taylor also went on a trip to the Guyanese Amazon to scale the giant Mount Roraima. “We were in the jungle for a month,” she recalls. “That was incredible and pretty scary sleeping there at first, especially with huge spiders walking across your tent!” Taylor thrives on the physical and mental challenges of climbing. “It’s all about keeping your head under control,” she explains. “You practice with a safety rope, and then it’s about making the commitment of doing it without one.”
9. What has made Taylor famous in the adventure community?
A. Her young age as a climber. B. Her unique experience in the Amazon.
C. Her completion of challenging outdoor tasks. D. Her advocacy of adventurous trips.
10. What does Taylor think of the UK for climbing?
A. It is judged wrongly compared to exotic places. B. It is as good as anywhere if one is imaginative.
C. It lacks the variety of routes. D. It is fit for self-powered rounds.
11. What do we know about Taylor in the Classic Rock challenge?
A She considered reaching the top more satisfying. B. She carried loads of equipment.
C. She recommended completing it in summer. D. She explored more countries.
12. Which of the following best describes Taylor according to the passage?
A. Proud and competitive. B. Reserved and cautious.
C. Humorous and responsible. D. Adventurous and passionate.
C 10. A 11. B 12. D

Nowadays, many people turn to the Internet for medical advice when they notice signs of illness. This is understandable as seeing a doctor can be time-consuming and costly unless it’s a serious health concern. ___13___ Often, the answer is: not really.
Medicine is complex. ___14___ For instance, the cause of a cough in a healthy 25-year-old might be different from that in a 65-year-old smoker. Yet, they might find the same search results. People may also not know the exact terms to search for. A search for “bloating (腹胀)” might suggest eating more slowly or avoiding dairy products, which can help if bloating is from too much air, but not so if it’s from fluid (液体) build-up. Only after seeing a doctor and undergoing a physical examination would it be identified as “ascites (腹腔积水)”.
___15___ Many articles are written intentionally to make money or promote specific agendas, not to give accurate advice. In fact, only a small part of the health information available online is created with the reader’s best interests in mind.
Fortunately, a few strategies can help us find reliable medical information. First, check the author and website. ___16___ Government agencies are also trustworthy and offer regularly updated information.
Besides, be careful if a website recommends a specific medication or procedure, especially if it has large ads for that treatment. ___17___
By following these tips, we can improve our chances of finding useful, accurate, and objective health information.
A. So is this trend bound to continue?
B. But is online medical advice actually reliable?
C. These pages may be created by profit-driven companies.
D. An even bigger issue is the rise of medical misinformation.
E. Online articles often fail to consider each person’s unique situation.
F. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to figure out a website’s intentions.
G. Reliable sources are usually written by doctors or hosted on trusted sites.
B 14. E 15. D 16. G 17. C
根据前文“Nowadays, many people turn to the Internet for medical advice when they notice signs of illness. This is understandable as seeing a doctor can be time-consuming and costly unless it’s a serious health concern.(如今,许多人在发现疾病迹象时都求助于互联网寻求医疗建议。这是可以理解的,因为看医生既耗时又昂贵,除非是严重的健康问题)”以及后文“Often, the answer is: not really.(通常,答案是:并非如此)”可知,前文提到很多人生病时求助互联网,后文说答案是并非如此,所以空处应是提问是否可靠,B项“But is online medical advice actually reliable?(但是网上的医疗建议真的可靠吗?)”和上文构成转折关系,下文是对本句的回答,符合文意。故选B项。
【14题详解】
根据后文“For instance, the cause of a cough in a healthy 25-year-old might be different from that in a 65-year-old smoker. Yet, they might find the same search results.(例如,一个健康的25岁的人咳嗽的原因可能与一个65岁的吸烟者不同。然而,他们可能会找到相同的搜索结果)”可知,此处是举例说明,互联网不会考虑个体因素,E项“Online articles often fail to consider each person’s unique situation.(网络文章往往没有考虑到每个人的独特情况)”符合此处主题,后文是对本句的举例。故选E项。
【15题详解】
设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“Many articles are written intentionally to make money or promote specific agendas, not to give accurate advice. In fact, only a small part of the health information available online is created with the reader’s best interests in mind.(许多文章都是为了赚钱或推动特定的议程而写的,而不是为了给出准确的建议。事实上,网上只有一小部分健康信息是考虑到读者的最大利益而创建的)”可知,本段讲述了网上很多文章都是为了赚钱或推动特定的议程而写的,而不是为了给出准确的建议,由此推知,会有一些错误的信息。D项“An even bigger issue is the rise of medical misinformation.(一个更大的问题是医疗错误信息的增加)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选D项。
根据前文“Fortunately, a few strategies can help us find reliable medical information. First, check the author and website.(幸运的是,一些策略可以帮助我们找到可靠的医疗信息。首先,查看作者和网站)”可知,此处介绍如何找到可靠信息,首先,查看作者和网站,G项“Reliable sources are usually written by doctors or hosted on trusted sites.(可靠的来源通常由医生撰写或托管在可信的网站上)”是对可靠作者和网站的具体讲述,符合文意。故选G项。
【17题详解】
设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结。根据上文“Besides, be careful if a website recommends a specific medication or procedure, especially if it has large ads for that treatment.(此外,如果一个网站推荐某种特定的药物或程序,特别是如果它有很大的广告)”可知,这样的网站通常是牟利。C项“These pages may be created by profit-driven companies.(这些页面可能是由逐利公司创建的)”是对前文情况的总结,符合文意。

Sophia was a teenager going through changes in her behaviour and dressing style. One day after school, Sophia’s mother prepared a plate of delicious vegetables and rice and asked Sophia to have dinner, but she refused to eat it, insisting it wasn’t what she liked. Then she absent-mindedly knocked over a vase filled with beautiful roses. Her mother ignored it, but moments later, Sophia asked loudly, “Mummy! Why did you throw away some of my clothes and change the setting of my room?” Her mother was shocked as Sophia had never raised her voice so high.
At night when Sophia’s father came home, her mother discussed the matter with him. He listened carefully and asked Sophia’s mother to remain calm, no matter what Sophia did. “It’s time that we stepped back. Don’t do anything for her — no cooking, no laundry (洗衣物), no searching for her missing things…” he said.
The next day, Sophia overslept. Her mother didn’t wake her up or prepare breakfast, just putting some money on the table. Sophia grabbed the money and rushed to school. That afternoon, when Sophia returned home, she found there wasn’t any food prepared. Feeling unnoticed, Sophia went into her room, locked the door, and began to cry as if releasing the emotions she had bottled up for a long time.
After about 20 minutes, the doorbell rang. Quickly, Sophia dried her eyes and stepped out of her room. When she saw her mother return with a handful of shopping bags, she came in front of her, asking the reason for no breakfast or dinner. Her mother said gently, “Now that you have grown up and have your own thoughts, I’ll let you make some personal choices.” Then her mother headed to the kitchen, signaling Sophia to follow. Feeling confused, Sophia came into the kitchen with her mother.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Her mother opened the bags and asked Sophia to look and choose by herself.

The next morning, Sophia woke up with the determination to change.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible version:
Her mother opened the bags and asked Sophia to look and choose by herself. Inside were fresh vegetables and grains that Sophia loved. “You’re old enough to decide what to eat and how to manage your time,” her mother said softly, handing her a recipe book. Excited but nervous, Sophia decided to make a beef sandwich. Having never cooked before, she naturally had difficulty throughout the process. Fortunately, her mother offered her helpful instructions, resulting in a not-so-good dinner. Sophia realized how hard the housework was.
The next morning, Sophia woke up with the determination to change. She went to the kitchen where her mother was making breakfast and apologized for her recent strange behavior. Her mother replied gently, “It’s okay. I’m just happy you’re better.” Sophia hugged her and promised to help with more chores. Later that day, she sorted out her clothes without complaining and bought a new vase for her mother after school. After dinner, as they washed the dishes together, Sophia understood that growing up meant learning to properly give rather than trying to take without any sense of gratitude.

3. How did Basch influence business owners?
A. By persuading them to use flyers.
B. By promising them financial benefits.
C. By asking them to put wasted food into a bag.
D. By requesting them to sort and bag the left food.
4. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Learning to build an app? Consult Coding Experts
B. Wanting Discounted Foods? Shop at the End of Day
C. Aiming to Dominate Market? Follow Basch’s Success
D. Emptying Your Leftover Food? Turn to Too Good to Go
B

A. She considered reaching the top more satisfying. B. She carried loads of equipment.
C. She recommended completing it in summer. D. She explored more countries.
12. Which of the following best describes Taylor according to the passage?
A. Proud and competitive. B. Reserved and cautious.
C. Humorous and responsible. D. Adventurous and passionate.
