Passage 3
Someone gives you one marshmallow (棉花糖). You can either eat it right away or wait for 15 to 20 minutes and get two. Would you wait?
This is the famous “marshmallow test” from the 1960s. It was used to see how much self-control (自控力) children have. Surprisingly, a recent study shows that cuttlefish (乌贼) can pass this test too.
What’s the study?
Scientists at the University of Cambridge did the study. They set up two boxes of food for the cuttlefish. One had grass shrimp (藻虾) and the other had shore crab (食草蟹). Cuttlefish like to eat grass shrimp more than shore crab. They could eat the shore crab right away, but needed to wait to eat their preferred meal (the grass shrimp).
It turned out that the cuttlefish would wait for 50 to 130 seconds for grass shrimp. This is quite clever, researcher Nicola Clayton said. “Self-control needs an understanding that ‘less is sometimes more’,” she said.
Why can they do this?
In the past, scientists did the “marshmallow test” on several large-brained animals, such as apes (猩猩) and parrots (鹦鹉). They could control themselves and wait too. As social animals, they already get benefit from this in the wild. For example, apes might wait to eat with others to make friends.
But cuttlefish are not social. Scientists guess that they have self-control because they often spend a long time hiding from predators (捕食者). They have to wait patiently for predators to leave before they can look for food themselves.
9.Which of the following food do Cuttlefish like best?
A.Large fish. B.Marshmallows. C.Shore crab. D.Grass shrimp.
10.What does Nicola Clayton think of cuttlefish?
A.They are smart. B.They are foolish. C.They are helpful. D.They are friendly.
11.What does the underlined word “benefit” probably mean?
A.food B.good C.method D.attention
12.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Marshmallow test B.Self-control children C.Waiting patiently D.Hiding from predators
【答案】9.D 10.A 11.B 12.C
根据“Cuttlefish like to eat grass shrimp more than shore crab.”
根据“It turned out that the cuttlefish would wait for 50 to 130 seconds for grass shrimp. This is quite clever, researcher Nicola Clayton said.” 故选A。
根据“As social animals, they already get benefit from this in the wild. For example, apes might wait to eat with others to make friends.”

The sun provides sunshine for plants, animals, and people on the Earth. Energy from the sun is called solar (太阳的) energy. It comes in the form of light or heat. Solar energy makes you feel warm. People have used solar energy for many years. Houses were built with windows so that sunlight can get inside and provide heat. The sun’s energy can also be used to heat water and even food.
We can also turn the sun’s light into electricity. This is done with solar panels Solar panels are made up of silicon (硅). When the sunlight reaches the solar panel, the electrons (电子) in the silicon move and flow (流动) through wires in the solar panel. Using this technology, we can run even cars.
But what happens when clouds block the solar panels? The electrons in the silicon will stop moving. But this doesn’t mean that solar energy can only be used on bright sunny days. Solar panels can have batteries to store electricity for a rainy day. When the sun is shining, the electricity flows from the solar panel into the batteries. The stored electricity can be used at night or on cloudy days.

① This term, some schools have had big changes both for students and teachers. These changes happened because AI tools were used.
② By using AI to create personalized (个性化的) exercises and exams, teachers at the school can choose their teaching methods for each student’s needs.
③ After students finish studying a lesson, teachers use AI to pick different questions from an online database (数据库). This helps create a set of exercises for the lesson, helping students go over their knowledge.
④ “With this special learning material created by AI, we don’t need to carry all the heavy exercise books anymore,” said the 14-year-old He Liyan.
⑤Students answer the exercise questions on answer sheets. Teachers collect these sheets, scan (扫描) them into an AI system for grades. The AI creates numbers and graphics (图形) that help teachers understand each student’s study as well as how the whole class is doing overall.
⑥ “Our teacher no longer explains all the questions one by one. Instead, she looks at the common mistakes and provides one-on-one help for every one of us,” said the 15-year-old Wang Dinghan.

For most scientists, however, nature gives out something more—the ideas to improve people’s life. They study bees to work out how small robots might “talk” to report the weather. They look at gecko’s (壁虎的) feet to find how to make tape. They study fruit flies to help doctors save people’s lives.
“There are so many fun ways that animals develop to solve (解决) problems, and some of them are ones we never think of.” says Lisa Manning, a professor of the bioinspired (生物启发的) center. Zhenyu Gan is a robot engineer in the center. He makes robots with four legs or more, instead of robots with wheels (轮子).
To find out how legged robots could stand or walk, Gan looks to animals such as horses and mice. “The first thing we have to understand is how they move.” Gan says.
“Usually, robots with two legs like people are clumsy. Just think about how a baby learns to stand and walk. But my robots have four legs or more, just like horses, making the robots walk or run easily and fast.” says Gan.

Solar energy is not as expensive as before now. The sun produces more energy in one second than people have used since the beginning of time. Just imagine what we could do if we used the sun’s energy to power our Earth.
65.What are the uses of solar energy?
①making people feel warm ②letting sunlight get inside
③building houses with windows ④heating water and even food
A.①③ B.①④ C.②③ D.②④
66.Paragraph 2 mainly tells us how people ________.
A.make solar panels B.use electricity to run cars
C.turn sunlight into electricity D.store electricity at home
67.What does the underlined word “block” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Take. B.Carry. C.Help. D.Cover.
68.What can we know from the text?
A.Trains can even use solar energy.
B.Solar energy makes you feel sleepy.
C.Now solar energy is cheaper than before.
D.People can only use solar energy on sunny days.
