It has a snakelike body, four legs, sharp claws, a pair of horns (角) and large eyes. When Western people first learned of this animal, they thought it fitted the image (形象) of the “dragon” in their culture. However, there are some differences between the dragon and the loong. In Western stories, the dragon often has a body like a dinosaur (恐龙) and wings. It can make fire. It is usually a scary and bad animal. However, according to Chinese stories, the loong doesn’t have wings, but it can fly high into the sky. Chinese people believe it is an auspicious (吉祥的) animal. In ancient China, people believed it was able to change the weather and protect humans. Over time, the loong has become a symbol of power, honesty and good luck in Chinese culture. The word “loong” is not a new word. It first appeared in the 19th century. The comeback of the word shows the Chinese people’s growing cultural confidence.
