一、完形填空(10分)
A hundred years ago, a group of scientists built a model that 21 changed the old way people understood reality: quantum mechanics . To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its birth, the United Nations named 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
Quantum mechanics studies very 22 things, like atoms and even smaller particles . Around 1900 scientists such as Max Planck and Albert Einstein started to describe why the atomic world could not be explained by the classical theories developed by Isaac Newton and others two centuries earlier. In the 1920s, more scientists including Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrodinger bravely 23 from classical physics and developed quantum mechanics further, opening the door to future progress and useful inventions that continue to 24 our modern life. As Nature noted: “Modern physics is quantum physics.”
In quantum mechanics, many counter-intuitive phenomena happen. For example, an atom can be in two places at the same time, and a cat in a box can be both alive and dead. In another 25 called “spooky action at a distance”, when two particles become entangled , the state of one instantly influences the state of the other, 26 far apart they are. It’s like having a pair of magical dice that always show the same numbers, even from opposite sides of the galaxy.
These 27 may sound hard to imagine or even strange, but they are the reason we have modern technology today. The GPS that finds your location, the bright LEDs in your phone screen and MRI machines that make medical images all come from quantum principles. Most importantly, the design of the silicon chip 28 every computer and smartphone depends on our understanding of how electrons behave in semiconductors a quantum effect.
As we celebrate its 100th birthday, quantum science is advancing faster than ever. Scientists are building quantum computers that could solve problems too hard for today’s supercomputers and 29 quantum encryption to make unbreakable communication networks. Quantum physics has taught us that the universe is full of surprises and that its 30 are as great as our imagination.

When 15-year-old Tao received a small bamboo seed from his grandfather, he didn’t think much of it. “Plant it, and wait,” his grandfather said, eyes crinkling with a secret. Tao dug a hole in his backyard, placed the seed inside, and watered it carefully.
Weeks passed, and nothing happened. Tao grew impatient, forgetting to water it sometimes. But his grandfather reminded him, “Trust the process .” Another month went by, still no sprout . Tao almost gave up, but one morning, a tiny green shoot pushed through the soil.
In the next six weeks, that shoot grew into a 10-meter-tall bamboo. Tao was shocked. His grandfather explained, “Bamboo spends five years growing roots underground, so it can shoot up quickly when the time comes.” That day, Tao learned that patience isn’t about waiting and doing nothing, but about keeping going even when you don’t see results.

Maria: We can’t remember everyone in life. However, I’ll never forget my uncle. Five years ago, he lost his life when he saved a girl from the river. That made me rather sad because that girl was just me! He was a funny, smart and brave man. But he left us so early!

Life is full of the unexpected. This is even true for a small pet dog. A dog called Romeo has been pulled out from the rubble of an earthquake, more than nine days after the earthquake. On August 24, 2016, a terrible earthquake happened in Italy. The earthquake made thousands of people lose their houses. Romeo’s owners were sleeping on the second floor of their house when the earthquake happened. They managed to get out. But Romeo, who was sleeping on the first floor, was trapped inside. They tried their best to search for Romeo, but failed. After a few hours, they had to leave the village for their own safety.
All hope of finding Romeo alive seemed to disappear until Friday evening. That night the couple returned to their home with a group of firemen. Almost as soon as they came into the village, Romeo heard their voices and began barking .
The couple couldn’t believe their ears. The firemen began digging at once where the barking was coming from and got to the dog. It was lucky that the dog was in pretty good condition. He looked like he had just woken from a short sleep.
Appearing completely relaxed, the dog drank his first drop of water in more than 230 hours from a bottle held by one of the firemen.
As it became clear he didn’t get hurt, the fireman put him down. When Romeo’s owners saw him, they couldn’t help crying. “We thought we had lost him forever!” said one of Romeo’s owners. Then Romeo left happily with his owners who had given up hope of finding him alive.
