In 1998, fourth-grade students at St. John School in Belle River, Ontario, participated in a project 3 by the book Paddle-to-the-Sea. Under the guidance of their teacher, Roland, the students wrote letters about the Great Lakes, sealed (密封) them in plastic bottles, and released them into Lake St. Clair. One such letter was 4 by then-student Makenzie Morris.
Makenzie Morris, 5 by her former teacher and her two children, held the message in the bottle she cast into Lake St. Clair 26 years ago. Passage 4
(24-25高二下·吉林松原·期中)
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. This saying perfectly shows the 1 of giving, and how it helps to 2 our own lives. One of the most frequent ways of giving is through voluntary work, where we help others without receiving any financial reward 3 .
I once volunteered to 4 one-room flats where the less fortunate lived. When I first entered the flat, I was 5 at the living conditions. It was overcrowded with people and household items covered with dust. 6 , I could not contain my judgement, and was instinctively 7 about the owners of the flat. However, as the cleaning proceeded, I talked to them. Learning about 8 that the family had met with, I was regretful for my initial 9 judgement of them.

They often said “thank you” and smiled whenever I helped them even with a 11 task. This experience has allowed me to be more mindful of the things that I take for granted, and to be more careful of not letting insignificant things 12 me.

Another time when I volunteered to teach life skills to students with cerebral palsy(脑瘫), I found they were very 10 of the teachers. They often said “thank you” and smiled whenever I helped them even with a 11 task. This experience has allowed me to be more mindful of the things that I take for granted, and to be more careful of not letting insignificant things 12 me.
