Mark had always been passionate about helping others, and volunteering for the Special Olympics was something he had dreamt of for a long time.
When he got the chance to instruct Cherie, he felt a sense of excitement. Cherie was a young girl with a mental disability, which meant that she sometimes struggled to understand instructions. Mark knew that helping Cherie would require patience, creativity, and a lot of heart. But he never gave up.
Their training sessions began a few weeks before the Special Olympics. Mark encouraged her, kept her calm, and let her know when it was time to line up for her race. Once, he even held up a picture of a runner crossing the finish line. “Cherie, this is our destination,” he said, pointing to the image. He also spent time talking to her about the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork. “Cherie, it’s not just about winning,” he explained. “It’s about doing your best and helping others do their best too.” Cherie seemed to understand and nodded firmly.
On the day of the race, the Special Olympics stadium was packed with families, friends, and supporters, cheering for their loved ones. Cherie was ready at the starting line. Mark could see her hands shaking a little, but her smile was as bright as ever. Mark knelt down beside her and whispered, “You can make it, Cherie. Just listen to the starting pistol (枪) and run as fast as you can.”
When the starting pistol fired, Cherie took off like a flash of light. Her running style was a bit uncoordinated (不协调), but her effort and determination were evident. She quickly left her fellow racers behind. Mark cheered her on, his heart filled with pride.
As Cherie neared the finish line, Mark expected her to cross it with the same determination she had shown throughout the race. But something unexpected happened. Cherie suddenly slowed down, stopped, and turned around. She looked back at the other runners, who were still a long way to go and some runners went the wrong way.

【答案】Instead of crossing the finish line alone, she waved and shouted, “Come on, guys! Here!” With that, Cherie ran back towards the struggling runners. She grabbed the hand of one of the girls who looked particularly lost and gently led her in the right direction. “We go together,” she said, her voice filled with determination. The other runners, inspired by her, started to follow. Slowly but surely, they formed a small group, running towards the finish line as a team. The crowd, initially stunned, erupted into thunderous applause, cheering not only for their effort but also for Cherie’s display of true sportsmanship.
After the race, Mark walked over to Cherie, who was still smiling with pride. “Cherie, you are amazing!” Mark exclaimed, giving her a big hug. “You showed everyone what it really means to be a part of the Special Olympics. It’s not about winning, but about helping each other and having fun.” Cherie beamed up at him, her eyes shining with joy. The other runners and their families also came over to thank her. One mother said, “Your kindness made this race truly special for all of us.” Cherie had not only won the respect of those around her but also taught everyone a valuable lesson about the power of compassion and teamwork.

In a busy grocery store, a new employee named Tom joined the team. Tom was a quiet and modest young man, but there was something about him that caught the attention of his coworkers. He seemed constantly tired, and often nodded off during his shifts.
His coworkers were puzzled by this. Some of them even started whispering to each other, suspecting that Tom might be lazy or irresponsible. However, there was also a kind-hearted woman named Lisa who noticed Tom’s situation and was worried. Instead of ignoring it or making unkind assumptions, she decided to reach out to him.
One day, during a break, Lisa sat down beside Tom and gently asked him if everything was okay. Tom looked a bit hesitant at first. He was aware of the whispers and the negative looks he’d been getting from some of his coworkers. He was afraid that Lisa might also be there to scold (责骂) him. But then, seeing the genuine concern in Lisa’s eyes, he opened up.
He told Lisa that he had just moved to this city for this job. Since it was all so sudden and he hadn’t had much time to look around for accommodation, he ended up renting an apartment that was far from the workplace. He couldn’t afford a car and had to rely on public transportation, which often had long delays. As a result, he had to get up very early in the morning. To make matters worse, the bus route was not direct, and he had to change several times. By the time he reached the store, he was already worn out.
Lisa listened attentively, her heart filled with sympathy. She knew she had to do something to help. Therefore, she decided to talk to their manager about Tom’s situation. The manager was also a very understanding person. Together, they came up with an idea.

【答案】One possible version:
Later, Tom was called into the manager’s office. The manager told him that they were going to clear out a corner of the storeroom and let him live there temporarily. This way, he could save a great deal of time on commuting and get enough rest. Upon hearing this, Tom’s eyes widened in surprise and tears of gratitude streamed down his face. The day after he moved into the storeroom, Tom’s overall condition changed dramatically. He was full of energy and enthusiasm during work. Seeing Tom’s transformation, his coworkers felt ashamed of their previous unkind thoughts and whispers.
After living in the storeroom for nearly a month, Tom finally found a suitable apartment. It was within walking distance of the store and Tom was excited about it. All of his coworkers came to help him move. Tom was deeply grateful for their support. He particularly thanked the manager and Lisa, whose help not only solved his practical problem but also made him feel the warmth of the workplace. This incident also reminded people that everyone may face difficulties and a little more understanding and help can make a big difference.

“Emma, you’ve got a gift for painting!” Mrs. Thompson exclaimed as she admired the bright oil painting in front of her. The art class bubbled with excitement, and one of Emma’s classmates teased, “Better get her signature now — future Picasso!” Emma laughed quietly to herself, but deep down, the words brought back a long-held dream: becoming a famous artist, just like the masters she admired.
At 14, Emma had already learned the importance of not giving up. With her father working long hours to support the family, she decided to save up for her first professional art set. For months, she babysat the neighbors’ children and sold handmade bracelets at the local market. Finally, she had enough money to buy the set she’d been looking at for weeks—a collection of good paints and brushes, perfect for bringing her artistic ideas to life.
“Dad, save your money for Sarah’s school trip,” Emma insisted when her father offered to help. “I want this art set to be mine — every penny earned by me.” Her father smiled, proud but tired, and Emma promised to make him proud with her art.
On the walk home from school, Emma couldn’t hold back her excitement. “Lily, tomorrow’s the day! I’m buying that art set after school — want to come?” Her best friend Lily, usually quiet, nodded with a small smile. Suddenly, Lily tripped over a crack in the sidewalk, and her sketchpad (画板) fell to the ground. Emma picked it up and noticed the old edges and pages filled with sketches done in light pencil. The paper was thin, and some pages were torn, almost falling apart.
Lily quickly grabbed the sketchpad, her cheeks turning red. “It’s... it’s still okay,” she mumbled, avoiding Emma’s eyes. But Emma saw the truth: this sketchpad wasn’t just old — it was falling apart. She thought of her own dream art set waiting at the store, with its clean brushes and bright paints, and then looked at Lily’s sketchpad again. The walk continued, but Emma hardly noticed the talk around her as her heart beat fast.

The next morning, Lily found a neatly wrapped package on her desk.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Emma stared at the old sketchpad, her excitement turning into quiet thought. She knew how much Lily loved drawing — Lily always doodled in class and talked about her dream of becoming an artist. Yet Lily’s sketchpad was so worn out that it could barely hold the pages. Emma thought of her own hard-earned money and the art set she’d been longing for, but she also pictured Lily’s disappointed face when she couldn’t afford new supplies. Suddenly, a decision formed in her mind. She would buy the art set for Lily instead of herself.
The next morning, Lily found a neatly wrapped package on her desk. Curious, she opened it and saw the art set Emma had been looking forward to — bright paints, brand-new brushes, and a high-quality sketchpad. A note inside read: “Your sketches are amazing. I hope this set helps you create more wonderful works. Let’s chase our artist dreams together!” Lily’s eyes filled with tears. When she looked up, she saw Emma smiling at her. From that day on, they often painted together, their friendship growing stronger as they pursued their shared passion.

With three little babies, I never took a break, completely ignoring any self-care. When I was too tired to make myself dinner, I’d just eat the kids’ leftover cereal (麦片粥). I thought this was a great plan to lose some weight and called it the “Cereal for Diet.” Back then,I knew nothing about nutrition. Of course, the Cereal for Diet failed, as did all my other attempts.
One day, after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk. I passed a gym. I looked away.Healthy people went there, but this was not me. While turning away,I saw an ad for a six-month fitness challenge. I continued my fast walk in the opposite direction, but that sign just stayed on my mind.
I still remember what finally motivated me to sign up for the challenge. It was a ten-minute period in which my son threw his spaghetti plate straight up, sending noodles and sauce flying everywhere. As soon as my husband got home,I said, “You’re in charge.”
I made a beeline for the gym, marched straight in and said, “Fix me.” And I was assigned a young and fit trainer, Emily. She asked what my goals were for the six-month challenge. At that moment, I was speechless. Noticing my embarrassment, Emily just handed me the heaviest weights I had in my life and said, “Okay, so in six months you will compete in a body-building show.” I tried explaining, “No, I don’t want to do a show. That sounds scary.” She ignored my fear, and we jumped into strict workouts and nutrition planning.
Over the next six months, Emily forced me to focus on myself — my wants and my needs. I learned to see food as strength and sweat as progress. I learned how to fuel my body instead of starving it, balancing proteins, carbs, and fats. Emily pushed me past my limits, correcting my form, timing my breaks, and cheering me on when I wanted to quit. I improved every day in the gym.

One day, Emily handed me an application form.

Soon, I jumped into weeks of preparation.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One day, Emily handed me an application form. “You’re ready,” she said with a confident smile. It was for a local body-building show, the very thing I’d once feared. My heart raced as I looked at the form, but then I thought of all the progress I'd made. I took a deep breath and filled it out, determined to face my fear. I knew this was a chance to prove to myself that I could achieve something I never thought possible.
Soon, I jumped into weeks of preparation. Every day, I spent hours in the gym, following Emily’s strict workout plan. I also paid close attention to my diet, making sure I got the right nutrients. As the show day drew near, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. But with Emily’s constant encouragement and support, I felt more and more confident. Finally, the big day arrived, and I stepped onto the stage, ready to show the world what I’d accomplished.

Fifteen-year-old Cameron and twelve-year-old Barton lived in a town in Taxco. Their parents worked tirelessly day in and day out, yet still struggled to make ends meet. Cameron and Barton, both in middle school, witnessed their parents’ hard work and anxiety and decided to take action and offer their assistance.
As summer vacation began, while other children were enjoying their carefree time, Cameron and Barton had a different plan. They started the challenging journey of seeking part-time jobs. Their first attempt was at a local restaurant. Filled with hope, they stood before the manager with an eager expression. However, the manager looked at them critically and said, “You two are too young!” Their hearts sank instantly. Cameron felt a sense of deep disappointment, thinking, “How can we prove ourselves if no one gives us a chance?” Barton’s face fell as he asked his brother, “Will we ever find a job?”
Not discouraged by the rejection, they then went to a store named Thompson’s Grocery, hoping to become assistants. “Hello, you must be Mr. Thompson. We’re here to apply for the job,” Cameron said. Barton stood on tiptoe and handed a card from their school’s help-wanted board to Mr. Thompson behind the counter, who was the owner and seemed to be a kind person. However, before they could say more, he shook his head.
“This job is too hard for you kids,” he said. “I need someone big and strong.” “Let us give it a try, and if you don’t like our work, don’t pay us,” Cameron begged. He stared at the brothers, who were so sincere, then nodding. Next, he led them to the warehouse (仓库) of the store. The floor was piled with boxes of different sizes and all kinds of objects at random, filling every corner. The various items were mixed up chaotically (杂乱地). It seemed as if they had never been sorted or cleaned. Cameron and Barton were required to clear away the items.

【答案】 “It’s a tough job. Just do as much as you can,” Mr. Thompson said. Indeed, the task seemed so demanding. Not long after they started working, the heat and dust made them uncomfortable. Cameron’s arms ached from moving heavy boxes, and Barton’s back was sore from bending over. When they had to stop for a break, only a small part was finished. Although the thought of giving up crossed their minds, the brothers pushed it aside thinking about how hard their parents had been working. The task took them over three hours, but they finally made the warehouse clean and tidy.
Cameron and Barton asked Mr. Thompson to come after they finished. Mr. Thompson’s eyes widened seeing the once chaotic space took on a completely new look, where everything was in order. He had not expected the brothers to do this job so well. Mr. Thompson handed them their wages, paying extra, and said, “You’ve earned this. By the way, I could use some help over the summer. I wonder if you’re interested.”“We’d love to!” Barton replied happily. Then the brothers went home excitedly, eager to share their success with their parents.

I am smaller than everyone else my age. Bigger kids at school sometimes bump into me or step on my toes for not seeing me. At the playground, little kids even try to boss me around.
I used to try to make myself taller. I hung from the tree in our backyard to stretch out my limbs. I even ate my vegetables — all of them — but I never seemed to grow. “Don’t worry.” Mom said, “Being small has its benefits.” Really? I’d never noticed any.
One day, Mrs. Alvarez told the class that we’d be putting on a spring play. I practiced all the lines before the audition, but I never got a chance to deliver them. As soon as I walked onstage, Mrs. Alvarez cried out, “Sophie! You’ll be perfect as the elf! You’re just the right size for the costume.”
When the auditions were finished, Mom was waiting outside for me. “Mrs. Alvarez made me an elf,” I grumbled. “I don’t want to be in the play any more.” Patting my head, Mom comforted me that I would be the best elf in the play. I nodded reluctantly.
In the play’s last scene, the main character finds a box under a giant mushroom. When she opens it, a dog jumps out. Mrs. Alvarez’s dog, Prince, played the dog role. She brought him to all the rehearsals. He liked all the kids, but he seemed to like me best.
Unexpectedly, something dramatic happened on the night of the show. When the box was opened, Prince jumped out as planned. He jumped into the giant mushroom, though, which fell over. Then he leaped off the stage and disappeared underneath it. Mrs. Alvarez called him, but he whimpered and refused to come out. The lights came on in the theater, and the audience started to fidget (坐立不安) in their seats. The entire class gathered at the edge of the stage.
“How are we going to get him out of there?” Mrs. Alvarez asked.

【答案】“How are we going to get him out of there?” Mrs. Alvarez asked. I looked down through the gap in the stage. It was dark and dusty, but I could see Prince shivering. He seemed scared. I thought about how he liked me best. “I can try,” I said quietly. Mrs. Alvarez looked at my small frame. “Oh, Sophie, I don’t know if you’ll fit.” But she had no other ideas. She helped me down. I took a deep breath and crawled into the dark space. It was tight, but I just fit. “Come here, Prince,” I whispered. He whimpered and crawled over, licking my face. I wrapped my arms around him and started backing out, pulling him with me. The audience held their breath.
Finally, I came out with the dog in my arms. A huge cheer went up from the crowd. Mrs. Alvarez hugged me, her eyes wet. “You were wonderful, Sophie! My hero!” The play continued, and while no one remembered much about the elf lines, everyone talked about how the smallest girl saved the show. Afterwards, Mom beamed with pride. “See?” she said, “Being small has its benefits.” For the first time, I believed her.

My pulse quickened as my feet took me closer and closer to the door. In my head, I could hear the words my father kept telling me, “Do it, Stephanie. You never do anything for yourself. Just set it up.” I felt my lungs filled with air and released it.
“Did you sign up?” my father asked. When he saw the drumsticks in my hand, he smiled and then came to hug me.
Wednesday came, and along with it was my first drum lesson. I walked through the door and headed directly to the seating area in the back. My hands kept fidgeting (摆弄) with the sticks. I kept nervously looking at the time. I tried to slow down my breath. I knew the teacher would say I was not the right type of person to play the drums. I turned around to see an old man looking at me.
“Stephanie? I’m Mike, the drum teacher,” he said.
He led me to a room. There were two drum sets, and he told me to sit at the one close to the door. Out of the door gathered the crowd, chatting and chuckling.
People made me nervous. That’s the way I’d always been. But Mike had a very calm manner, so I relaxed just slightly. Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me on how well I held the sticks and followed along with him. I learned how to read simple sheets of music, but then my thirty- minute lesson was over.
Walking back to my father’s car, I felt the energy beaming from within me. It was the first time that I had done something purely for my enjoyment, something just for myself.
I practiced as much as I could throughout the week. Even my four-year-old dog Pluto often complained that I never played with it. My second lesson came, and I played the sheets of music for Mike. I noticed as I played that Mike’s concentration became more and more apparent. When I finished the whole lesson, Mike said “You played that perfectly!”

After months of playing, one day, Mike invited me to play at a small concert. Practicing drumming became an essential part of my daily routine. The hours spent honing my skills were not just about mastering the instrument; they’re about discipline and love. My father, watching with a gentle smile, often stood by the door. His words of encouragement soothed my anxiety. With each nod of his head and every proud grin, my determination skyrocketed. Finally, the big day came.
Walking up on the stage, I took a deep breath and sat at the drum set. Lights flashing, I began to play. My hands moved swiftly, striking the drumheads with precision and power, each hits ending vibrations through the air that seemed to capture the audience’s hearts. The rhythm intensified, building like a storm, and the crowd watched in awe, their eyes glued to my every move. As the final beat hit, the air was filled with an electrifying energy, and the yard erupted in applause. Their applause was recognition to the power of music and me. “Stephanie, yes, you can do anything that you like!” I grinned with delight, drumsticks in my hands.

Agnes Cooper appeared to be in her seventies. We were just moving a bed into the house next to her two-story home when Mrs. Cooper walked up to our front door. She looked at my twelve-year-old son, Max, and then at me, saying, “Make sure you keep that child out of my yard!”
Since a six-foot-high fence stood between our buildings, I couldn’t understand her worry. Still, I assured her, “Don’t worry.”
The next day, while Max was laughing on the phone, we heard a heavy knock from the other side of the wall. “Stop laughing!” Mrs. Cooper screamed.
That same afternoon, Max and his friend played catch in the front yard. Within minutes, they returned. Max said Mrs. Cooper had shouted at them, asking them to play in the backyard. Annoyed, I went to her house and told her that if there was ever a problem again, come to me instead of shouting at my son. As I turned to leave, I met another neighbor.
“I see you’ve met Agnes Cooper,” she smiled. “Don’t take it personally. Her husband passed away years ago. She sits by that window every day, waiting for her son, who only visits when he needs money.”
My anger softened into sympathy. Yet Mrs. Cooper continued to complain — knocking on the wall when our TV was too loud, even getting upset over a ringing phone.
Two months later, we finally settled in and decided to host a gathering for family. On the day of the party, when I was setting food out in the backyard, I noticed Mrs. Cooper watching my laughing family by the window. Her usual angry expression was replaced by a look of deep loneliness. In that moment, I finally understood her.

【答案】 Minutes later, I was ringing her bell. When Mrs. Cooper opened the door, her eyes widened in surprise. I held out a plate of cookies I’d baked, smiling gently. “We’re having a little family gathering. I know we’ve had our little misunderstandings, but I’d love it if you’d join us” Her lips trembled slightly, and after a long pause, she nodded. I walked beside her as she slowly made her way to our backyard, her steps lightening a little with each move.
My husband and son hid their shock, welcoming Mrs. Cooper warmly. Max handed her a glass of lemonade and pulled out a chair for her. My husband started chatting about the weather, and soon Mrs. Cooper joined in, her voice no longer sharp. As she watched Max play with his little cousin, a faint smile crossed her face. Before leaving, she said softly, “Thank you for inviting me. It’s been a long time since I felt so warm.” From then on, the wall between us seemed to disappear — she even brought Max homemade jam the next morning, and our once-awkward neighbor became a dear friend.

Liam and Alex had been close friends since childhood, but recently their interests had begun to differ. Liam became increasingly focused on acquiring the latest electronic devices and fashionable clothing, convinced that his next purchase would bring him lasting satisfaction.
One sunny afternoon, Liam proudly showed Alex his new high-end smartphone. “Look at this! Isn’t it fantastic? This will finally make me happy,” Liam exclaimed, his eyes shining with brief excitement.
Alex took the phone, examined it for a moment, then returned it with a gentle smile. “It’s nice, Liam. But let me show you what really brings me joy.”
He led Liam to a small, hidden community garden behind their school. The air carried the sweet smell of blooming flowers, and bees buzzed peacefully among them. “My grandmother and I planted these sunflowers,” Alex said, pointing toward the bright yellow flowers. “We water them together every morning. It’s our special routine.”
Liam noticed how his friend’s face showed genuine happiness. “But it’s just... gardening,” he said, somewhat confused. “Liam,” Alex explained gently, “true happiness grows from inside us and from our connections with people we care about, not from things we own. Look around us. Our hearts find joy in the simplest things — the time I spend with my grandmother, these sunflowers we grew from tiny seeds, the bees visiting our garden. These simple pleasures don’t require expensive possessions to make us happy. And neither do we.”
Liam gazed at the sunflowers, their faces turned toward the sunlight, and then at Alex’s grandmother who was gently trimming (修剪) nearby rose bushes. Her wrinkled face wore a peaceful smile as she worked. “You know,” Liam began slowly, “I’ve been saving for the new gaming machine for months. But last week, when I finally bought it, the excitement lasted barely an hour.”

【答案】参考范文:
Alex picked up a packet of seeds and handed it to Liam. “Why not plant them with someone you care about? You’ll see the magic of growth,” Alex said softly. Liam took the seeds, his eyes brightening. That weekend, he invited his little sister to plant the seeds in their backyard. They watered them every day, and Liam watched carefully for any signs of sprouting. When the first green shoot appeared, he felt a joy he had never experienced from any electronic device.
After that, something changed within Liam. He no longer spent all his money on the latest gadgets. Instead, he started to spend more time with his family and friends. He helped his grandmother water her flowers and went hiking with his friends on weekends. He realized that the true happiness Alex talked about wasn’t in expensive things, but in the small, warm moments shared with loved ones. And those moments, he knew, would last forever.

Lila grew up with her grandmother in the countryside. Her favorite moments were singing traditional folk songs while working with the villagers. Her clear, pleasant voice lifted everyone’s spirits, making even the hardest work feel lighter.“Your voice is a gift, Lila,” her grandmother said. “It carries the soul of our village. Never stop singing.”
However, life changed when Lila’s family moved to the city for better opportunities. The tall buildings, busy streets, and unfamiliar faces overwhelmed her. At school, her classmates teased her for her rural accent, calling her “the farm girl”. Embarrassed and hurt, Lila became withdrawn. She stopped singing; she was afraid her voice would invite more ridicule (嘲笑).
One afternoon, after a particularly unkind comment from a classmate, Lila ran to a nearby park. The beautiful lake and trees reminded her of home. Sitting by the lake, she thought of her grandmother and the songs they used to sing. Hesitantly, she began singing one of her favorite folk tunes. Her voice started low but grew louder, filling the park with its beauty and emotion.
When she finished, she heard clapping. Turning around, she saw a kind woman smiling warmly. “It was beautiful,” the woman said. “Your voice has so much depth and emotion. Where did you learn to sing like that?” Lila replied with a flushed (脸红的) face, “It’s just a song from my village.” The woman’s eyes lit up with excitement. “You have a rare talent. Your voice tells a story. Would you like to sing with me?”
Lila hesitated, but the woman’s kind expression and genuine interest moved her. They sang together, their voices mixing harmoniously. Later, Lila learned that the woman was a music professor at a local university. That afternoon felt like a dream, and Lila found herself smiling for the first time in weeks. Before leaving, the woman said, “Practice, embrace (拥抱) your uniqueness, and let your voice shine. I’m looking forward to hearing you sing again.”

【答案】范文
Inspired by the professor’s words, Lila started practicing every day, determined to improve her singing skills. Each morning, she returned to the quiet park by the lake. As her voice echoed among the trees, memories of her grandmother’s encouragement warmed her heart. Though occasional passersby stared, Lila no longer hid. One day, a group of classmates heard her singing. Instead of mockery, they stood silently, captivated by the haunting beauty of the folk song. Lila’s confidence grew as she realized her voice could bridge worlds.
The next week, the same professor came to Lila’s school for the talent selection event. When Lila stepped onto the stage, her palms were sweaty, but she took a deep breath and began a village ballad. Her clear voice filled the auditorium, weaving tales of countryside life. The professor recognized her instantly and smiled proudly. As the last note faded, thunderous applause erupted. Even former teasers cheered. Afterward, the professor hugged her, whispering, “You’ve let your gift shine, just as your grandmother hoped.”

Amy had been living with Mr and Mrs Acharya for over six months. They were a retired couple who had taken her in as a paying guest while she began her first year of engineering college in a new city. Despite being away from her own family for the first time ever, she felt at home with the Acharyas ’ warmth and kindness.
Mr Acharya, a retired engineer, had greatly supported Amy’s studies. He often reviewed her notes, offered advice and patiently explained difficult topics to her. His friendly nature and guidance made her educational journey smoother and more enjoyable.
However, today was different. It was Amy’s birthday, yet being so far away from her family made her feel very low. The care the Acharyas offered her was comforting, but she felt an emptiness only her beloved family members could fill on this special day. She sat quietly in the living room, where Mr Acharya was reading a book. And Mrs Acharya was busy in the kitchen. Amy didn’t mention that it was her birthday, for she didn’t want to trouble them. Instead, she just sighed softly, looking at the family photos on her phone.
Mrs Acharya looked at her knowingly from the kitchen but said nothing. She and her husband had actually marked this special date in their calendar months ago, when they first saw it on Amy’s college admission papers. They had been quietly planning a surprise for days.
During dinner, the elderly couple chatted about everyday matters as usual. The meal was delicious, with some of Amy’s favorite dishes which Mrs Acharya had specially prepared. Still, Amy couldn’t help but feel sad. She tried to focus on the conversation and enjoy the food, but her thoughts kept returning to her family. She kept checking her silent phone, wondering why her parents hadn’t called or sent messages to wish her a happy birthday. She thought about how, every year on her birthday, her mother cooked her favourite meal and her father took her on a lovely drive and treated her to her favourite strawberry ice cream.
After dinner, the Acharyas kindly invited Amy to the backyard.

【答案】例文
After dinner, the Acharyas kindly invited Amy to the backyard. Curious, Amy followed the couple. To her amazement, the garden was softly lit with fairy lights, and a small table was set with a beautiful cake and colorful balloons. “Happy birthday, Amy!” the couple cheered together, smiling warmly. “We know it can be really hard to be away from your family on special days, and we hope that this surprise can make you feel better,” added Mrs Acharya. Greatly touched, Amy hugged the couple tightly in tears and expressed her sincere thankfulness. At that heartfelt moment, Amy realized she had found a second home.
Paragraph 2:
After the celebration, the Acharyas drove Amy to a nearby ice cream shop. There, they treated Amy to her favourite strawberry ice cream. “Your father mentioned your birthday tradition,” they explained. Amy was deeply moved and felt more relaxed. As she sat down to enjoy the treat, Mrs Acharya handed her a phone. Unexpectedly, her family appeared on a video call, smiling and waving. Both families chatted warmly, sharing stories and laughter. Amy’s parents thanked the Acharyas for their kindness and consideration. That wonderful day made Amy understand that home isn’t just a place — it is where love and care follow you all around.

Elliot Edwards had always been a curious boy, full of questions about life. But as he grew older, the voices around him, “Questions don’t help you earn a living”, slowly silenced his wonder. The only shadow heavier than his unspoken curiosity was the distance between him and his younger brother, Thomas.
Years ago, in a moment of anger, Elliot had broken their grandfather’s treasured wooden compass — a family gift given to Thomas on his sixteenth birthday. The compass was carved with moon shapes, and their grandfather had told them, “True direction is found where hearts meet.” But after their fight, Thomas had left, and the brothers had not spoken since.
For over ten years, he worked as a library worker, sweeping floors among silent books, his own spirit gathering dust like the shelves he cared for. One rainy Wednesday, Elliot found a well-worn wool scarf folded neatly in the corner while cleaning shelves. It belonged to Mrs. Davies, a retired teacher who visited weekly. When she hurried back, eyes wet, she said softly, “This was my late husband’s last gift. We’d fought, and he gave it to apologize before he passed away. Don’t wait till it’s too late to make amends (弥补), dear.” Elliot watched her hold the scarf tight. For the first time, he thought of the compass at home, and wondered if he could fix his bond with Thomas.
Then, behind an old heater, he found it, a wooden compass, its back damaged but still glowing slightly. The letters T. E. were carved into the wood. Memories rushed back — his grandfather’s words, Thomas’s hurt face, the weight of regret he had carried all these years.
Rain hit the window. Elliot held the compass tight. That moment, he decided to find Thomas — he had to fix their bond before it was too late.

【答案】 Elliot stood before Thomas’ house, the compass heavy in his pocket. Rain drizzled on his shoulders, but he barely felt it — all his focus was on the wooden door. When Thomas opened it, his eyes widened at the sight of Elliot, and then flicked to the compass Elliot held out. “I’m sorry,” Elliot said, voice tight. “I broke more than a compass that day. I broke us.” Thomas stared at the moon carvings, and then took the compass. For a long moment, he ran his finger over the T. E. “Grandpa was right,” he said finally. “Direction’s where hearts meet.” He pulled Elliot into a hug, and the rain outside felt like a soft, quiet apology too.
One day after that, Elliot met Mrs. Davies in the library. She was browsing the poetry section, and when she saw Elliot, she smiled, “You look lighter, dear.” Elliot nodded, pulling a small wooden box from his bag — inside, the repaired compass, now with a tiny sun next to the moon carvings. “I fixed it. And us. Thanks to you, Mrs. Davies. Your words really inspired me. I found my brother and we’ve reconciled.” Mrs. Davies nodded, “That’s the magic of mending — you don’t just fix things. You fix yourself.” As Elliot watched her leave, he glanced at the shelves — no longer dusty, but filled with stories of second chances. He knew his own story had just turned a new page.

The empty hallways of Northwood High echoed with Leo’s hurried footsteps. It was 3:05 PM, and his only goal was to get to the school bus before anyone could notice him. For weeks, a group of seniors had made it a habit to wait for him by his locker, their mocking (嘲弄的) laughter ringing in his ears long after he finally escaped. Leo, a slim sophomore with a passion for drawing birds, had learned that invisibility was his best defense.
Turning the corner towards the main exit, his heart sank. There they were, leaning against the very same lockers he needed to pass. Leo froze, considering turning back and hiding in the library until they left. But just as he was about to withdraw, a soft, crazy chirping sound caught his attention. It came from a small, dusty exit near the floor. Crouching (蹲) down, he saw a tiny sparrow, its wing trapped in a tangled mess of old string and rubbish inside the exit cover. The bird’s eyes were wide with panic, its body trembling.
A battle erupted inside Leo. Every instinct screamed at him to run, to avoid the attention that helping the bird would unavoidably bring. The seniors were still there, and any movement would draw their eyes. He imagined how they would laugh at him if they saw him bothering with a bird. But as he watched the sparrow struggle, a strange calm settled over him. This small creature was completely helpless, just like he felt most days. But unlike him, it had no way to escape its situation. It needed someone to be brave.

【答案】(one possible version)
Looking at the trapped bird, Leo knew he couldn’t walk away. He knelt down quickly, his fingers gently brushing away the debris around the sparrow’s wing. The chirping grew softer, as if the bird sensed help. His hands trembled not from fear of the seniors now, but from the urge to free the tiny creature. The string was tight, and he had to pull carefully to avoid hurting it. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the seniors stop talking — their eyes were on him. His face heated up, but he didn’t stop until the string finally came loose. The sparrow fluttered its wing, then hopped onto his palm.
To his surprise, one of the seniors, a tall boy named Mark, took a step forward. Leo tensed, waiting for the usual mockery. But Mark’s voice was quiet, not sharp. “Is it okay?” he asked, nodding at the sparrow in Leo’s hand. Leo hesitated, then nodded. “Yeah, I think it just got stuck.” Mark leaned down a little, his gaze softening. “My little sister loves birds. She’d be mad if I walked past this.” The other seniors exchanged looks, and then one of them said, “Come on, let’s get out of here. But we’ll be here soon.” Leo stood up, the sparrow flying off into the sky. For the first time in weeks, he walked past the seniors without feeling invisible.

“Today’s the day! Dad.” Ethan burst out as he poured cereal (麦片) into a bowl, unable to contain his excitement. “I hope I don’t let Coach Schultz and the kids in the team down.” It was finally the inter-school match, and Ethan was going to be pitching (投球) for the first time in a real match. “Oh, you’ll do fine,” Dad comforted, “You’ve spent months running, pitching, and working on your mobility.”
“Do you have time to feed the goats before you leave?” Dad asked. “Sure. I have fifteen minutes before Coach Schultz pick me up.” Ethan replied. “Sorry I have to leave before you.” Dad grabbed his car keys.
Ethan wolfed down his cereal and headed out to the barn (畜棚). As he fed the goats, he tried to remember all the pitching tips Coach Schultz had given him. Then he spotted their young goat Zeke opening the gate! Ethan dashed over to stop him from escaping. It was too late.
Knowing he couldn’t leave with Zeke on the loose, Ethan quickly figured out he’d need a bucket of cracked corn to attract the goat and a rope to catch him and lead him back. By that time, Zeke had disappeared into the trees in the far corner.
A car rolled in and stopped. “Ready?” Coach Schultz asked. “I — I can’t go right now. I have to get our goat back into his barn,” Ethan yelled. “Can I help?” he asked. “You don’t have time. Warm-up starts soon.” Ethan replied. “Don’t worry — I’ll come back and help you after I get the kids settled!” Coach Schultz shouted over the engine. Ethan fought to swallow the tightness in his throat as he went to get the corn and the rope.
Corn bucket in one hand and rope over his shoulder, Ethan ran toward the trees. But Zeke saw him and rushed off, getting farther and farther away. Exhausted from the run-around, Ethan collapsed down on the ground to catch his breath. He knew the team would be starting their warm-up by now. How he wished he could be there!

【答案】One possible version
Just then, a minibus stopped before Ethan. Out of the minibus jumped Coach Schultz and the kids from the team. Ethan stared in shock, and then his face lit up — he hadn’t expected them to come. Coach Schultz dashed towards Ethan, knelt down and declared, “The whole team’s heard about your situation. They can’t wait to lend a hand. A team helps each other, right?” The kids split up: some shook corn buckets to attract Zeke, others blocked the woods. Soon, Zeke bounced over, and ultimately Ethan tied the rope tightly, relieved.
“Thanks, but sorry this took so much of our warm-up time,” Ethan said guiltily. Patting him on the shoulder, the coach burst into laughter and uttered, “Chasing the goat is definitely a perfect way to warm-up — it has really fired everyone up! Besides, it is responsibility and cooperation that make a remarkable team.” The team cheered, applauding for themselves and hurried to the minibus with Zeke safely led back. As the bus drove off, Ethan smiled proudly and confidently. An unshakable inner voice told him that with this team, he could handle anything, even his very first pitch.

One hot day, Vivian decided to take her 3-year-old son, Ben, to a nearby park, something she rarely did. Ben was too naughty and unpredictable in public, and she had grown used to the judgmental stares from other parents, who seemed to silently accuse her of “bad parenting” for not controlling him. Still, she wanted to get him out of the house.
When they reached the park with such toys as a bucket (水桶) and a truck, Vivian felt a wave of relief — only two others were there: a woman and her daughter about 6 years old, playing in the large sandbox. Vivian tried to guide Ben to the swings, but he made a beeline for the sandbox. Though she had an anxious “oh no” feeling, she didn’t stop him. She just crossed her fingers and let him join.
Of course, it didn’t take long: Ben grabbed a handful of sand and threw it straight at the girl. Vivian froze, her face burning with shame. Stammering apologies, she rushed over to brush the sand and turned on the water tap beside the sandbox, ready to help wash the girl’s face.
To her surprise, the girl smiled instead of crying and held out a tool to Ben, inviting Ben to join her, “Sand’s soft! Wanna build a castle?” Ben hesitated for a moment before taking it and murmured, “Yeah!”
Vivian gave a sigh of relief, meeting the woman’s beautiful eyes. There was no blame, just a gentle smile. “I’m Clara, and this is Lila. We just moved here,” she said. “Kids are just kids, right?”
“I’m Vivian, and this is Ben,” Vivian responded, warmth spreading through her. “He struggles with impulses (冲动), so I rarely bring him out. Sorry again.”
Clara nodded, “For kids like that, patience helps.” Sure enough, Ben and Lila laughed as they piled sand, with Ben even sharing his toy truck. Vivian and Clara chatted happily. Suddenly, there came Lila’s cry of surprise. They turned, only to find the castle the two kids had been building collapsed.

They were about to help when Ben said decidedly, “I’ve got a good idea.” He grabbed his bucket, walked to the tap and filled it with water. Back at the sandbox, he poured water slowly on the dry sand, knelt and mixed it with his hands until the sand became easy to shape. Soon sweat rolled down his cheeks. Lila said to him gently, “Take your time. We’ll do it together.” Lila patted wet sand for the base, while Ben patted the castle edges firm with a small shovel. They worked tirelessly with sand, and the castle grew taller little by little.
Half an hour later, a new higher castle stood before the two mothers. Tears welling up in Vivian’s eyes, she thought of her past anxiety while taking Ben out and other parents’ judgmental looks, but now her son seemed so focused and friendly. Clara smiled and patted her shoulder, “See? Patience is all they need. Kids always surprise us if we wait.” Ben held Lila’s hand tightly, saying cheerfully, “We’ll build a bigger one next time!” Lila nodded eagerly. Watching their smiles, Vivian suddenly understood: respecting kids’ pace and waiting for them to grow is the best care. Ben wasn’t “naughty” — he just needed time and trust to show his kindness and cleverness.

Mrs. Anderson, an old lady, had lived in this neighborhood alone after her child flew the nest, suffering the feeling of isolation and insecurity. And the old house next door to her had been empty for years, its door and windows dusty. One day, she was gazing at her beloved garden from her window when a moving truck pulled up, catching her eye.
A young woman stepped out of the truck. She looked tired and overwhelmed, carrying a heavy backpack and guiding two little kids towards the unfamiliar house. Mrs. Anderson felt a pang of sympathy. Without a second thought, she stood up, smoothed her apron (围裙), and walked out. “Hello there! Welcome to the neighborhood,” she said with a warm smile. “I’m Clara Anderson. Need any help?”
The young woman looked up, surprise and relief washing over her face. “Oh, thank you! That would be wonderful. I’m Sarah, and these are my kids, Lily and Leo. It’s been… a bit of a day.” Mrs. Anderson offered to watch the children for an hour so Sarah could unpack in peace, for the old lady knew all too well what it was like to be alone.
Mrs. Anderson didn’t just help for that afternoon. She brought over homemade biscuits the next day, accompanied by some lovely flowers from her garden. “These flowers are so beautiful, Mrs. Anderson,” Sarah exclaimed, her eyes lighting up as she caught sight of the vibrant colors. Mrs. Anderson smiled warmly. “Thank you, dear. They are what I care most about every day. I believe life blooms when you put in the care, day after day.”

【答案】 Weeks passed, and the two families formed an unexpected bond. Sarah often invited Mrs. Anderson for dinner, and the children loved listening to her stories. In return, Mrs. Anderson taught Sarah gardening secrets. One rainy afternoon, Sarah noticed Mrs. Anderson struggling to fix a leaky roof. “Let me help!” Sarah insisted, fetching tools. Together they patched the roof, sharing laughter over tea afterward. The children drew Mrs. Anderson a “World’s Best Neighbor” card, which brought tears to her eyes. One day, Mrs. Anderson made an appointment to get together again the next day.
Sarah came to the garden as promised but Mrs. Anderson didn’t appear. Worried, Sarah knocked on her door. No answer. She peered through the window and saw Mrs. Anderson lying weakly on the sofa. Sarah immediately called an ambulance. At the hospital, the doctor confirmed it was pneumonia. Sarah stayed by her side, holding her hand. “You cared for us,” she whispered. “Now let us care for you.” Mrs. Anderson smiled faintly, realizing her garden wasn’t the only thing blooming — their friendship had blossomed too.

Coach Dad
On a November afternoon in Belmont, my five-year-old son Jack asked me to go for a walk. Not a big moment for most dads, but it felt good to be asked by him. As we walked along the street, thoughts rose in my heart: Nothing was more important to me than being a good father. But more and more these days, I asked myself, “Was I?”
I’m a business consultant, helping companies develop employees into successful teams. It was the work meant for me. If only I felt that same confidence as a father. I wondered why I always felt like something was missing between us. Yet I wasn’t completely clueless. They say your parenting style is shaped by how your parents raised you, and my role models weren’t perfect. But I wasn’t like my dad. Jack meant everything to me.
Reaching the end of the street, we found my friend Rick playing basketball with his son. “Hey, John, want to shoot a few?” Rick said, holding up the basketball. I shook my head. “Not really my game,” I said. Rick passed the ball to Jack and walked over to me. “I can hardly get Jack to do anything fun with me. How do you manage it, Rick?” I asked. “I try to make what’s important to my kid important to me, even if it’s just shooting a few baskets,” he replied. Easy for him, I thought. He likes playing sports while I know nothing about it.
On our way home, Jack said, “Dad, our Family Basketball Day at school is this coming Friday. I really want to play. It would be so much fun! Can we, please?” I recalled how badly I’d wanted my dad to be there for me and decided to follow Rick’s advice. That night, after getting Jack to bed, I sat at the computer and filled out the application. That’s when I noticed a box at the bottom asking, “Would you like to coach?” Before I could think twice, I clicked YES and hit SEND.
“That’s awesome!” Jack cheered when I told him the next day.

Then came our first practice. Not so awesome. I had the kids in our team gather around. Eight eager faces stared up at me. “Welcome to our first practice. We’re going to have fun!” They looked at me blankly. Did they realize I had no idea what I was doing? “Let’s shoot some baskets,” I proceeded to demonstrate without success... three times! Worse still, I didn’t have a whistle. My kids were wandering around aimlessly. Even Jack seemed lost. A wave of embarrassment washed over me. “I’ve made a huge mistake,” I thought to myself. “I’m just going to disappoint Jack.” I couldn’t let that happen. I had to find a way to cheer him up, no matter what.
I searched the web for coaching tips. One stood out: success comes when your heart is in the right place. Suddenly, everything clicked. My father had given me qualities that served me well at work; now, they would help me focus on what mattered to Jack. I dove into learning basketball basics, not forgetting to get myself a whistle. The next practice, I gathered my team and said, “Follow your heart; things work out!” I patiently walked them through the basics and modeled the movements. A flow of passing and shooting on court. Then a shot banked in. “Dad, I did it!” Jack jumped for joy. I ran over, gave him a high five and lifted him up. For me, this moment was everything.

Soon after we moved to a remote parcel of land in the Sierra foothills that hadn’t been built on for miles around, we brought in two stray cats, Nosey and Quincy, to keep down the pest population. We had never been cat owners before, and I feared it would be a challenge for our aging Lacy, but she became their best friend right from the start. She let them drink from her water bowl, sleep on her dog bed, and I even watched her licking cat food from their fur a time or two. The three companions formed quite a bond.
As Lacy continued to age, her cat friends stayed close. When we drove up our long driveway coming home from work, Lacy would limp to greet us, trailing by the cats, even when her joint pain made it hard for her to get off the porch. As her condition worsened, we spent much time at the vet’s office seeking the right medication to ease her pain. On one visit, I questioned the doctor: “There are times now when our dog seems confused. I know she has suffered some hearing loss, but there seems to be more to her behavior than just that. Am I imagining things?”
“No, you’re not.” Her reply was unexpected. “Dogs can suffer from a kind of mental confusion in their old age,” she continued. “It’s hard to know if that’s happening, but I suggest keeping her in mostly. She could wander off and forget how to come home, especially with all that land around your house.”
I asked my three teenagers to keep an eye on Lacy. With a house full of teenagers, things tended to get chaotic, but I encouraged them: “We can’t let Lacy go outside unless somebody goes with her.”
They agreed and kept watch until one bustling Thursday night. The house was full of their friends, who stayed until Youth Group started at church later. Kids came and went from every door. As the last kid left, I realized Lacy was nowhere in the house. It was dark, so my husband and I grabbed flashlights and searched the hillside, calling for her for hours — though I doubted she could hear us. We didn’t see the cats either, but figured they were on their nightly wander around the property. At midnight we gave up, deciding we’d have better chances in daylight.

The next morning the entire family joined in the search. My husband and the kids spread out, calling Lacy’s name anxiously across the hillside and woods surrounding our property. We checked every possible hiding spot she might have crawled into, under bushes and near the creek, our hearts sinking with each passing hour. By late morning, exhaustion and despair began to set in. We feared the worst — that Lacy, confused and frail, had wandered too far and couldn’t find her way back.
As I went out to start the car, I couldn’t believe my eyes. There, nestled in the tall grass near the driveway, were Nosey and Quincy! And right between them, curled up and looking weary but safe, was Lacy! Relief washed over me like a wave. It appeared the cats hadn’t been on their nightly wander alone; they must have found their lost friend during the night and stayed faithfully by her side, guarding her until dawn. This incredible display of loyalty and care among our unlikely companions was truly heartwarming, proving their bond was far stronger than we had imagined.
