Passage 1
ChatGPT, a powerful AI chatbot tool, has swept the world in the past months. While it has been dominating social media with its frighteningly good essays, ChatGPT has also caused both excitement and worries in education.
According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them had used ChatGPT to help with a homework task. Some students even got high scores thanks to papers written by ChatGPT.
Some universities and schools have banned the use of ChatGPT, such as public schools in New York City, CNN reported. The move comes out of growing concerns that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on schoolwork and be used to spread inaccurate (不精确的) information. “While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic (学术的) and lifelong success,” Jenna Lyle, said in a statement.
Apart from strict bans, teachers are redesigning their courses in an attempt to block the use of ChatGPT. Some college professors in the US are now including more oral exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones, The New York Times reported.
However, not all educators are saying “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are not planning on banning the tool. Instead, they are working on policies (政策) about its proper usage, for both students and lecturers.
Bhaskar Vira, pro-vice-chancellor for education at University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not sensible. “I’m of the opinion that we have to recognise that AI is a tool people will use but then adapt our learning, teaching and examination processes so that we can continue to have integrity (诚信) while recognizing the use of the tool,” he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university.
Vira’s opinion on ChatGPT is shared by Peter van der Putten, assistant professor at Leiden University in the Netherlands. “It’s there, just like Google is there. You can write it into your policies for stopping cheating but it’s a reality that the tool exists,” he told Sky News.

3.Why are some educators redesigning their courses?
A.To make them more difficult. B.To allow the use of ChatGPT.
C.To decrease the workload of students. D.To prevent students from using ChatGPT.
4.What is the opinion of Peter van der Putten on the use of ChatGPT?
A.It should be used with proper policies and guidelines.
B.It is not a useful tool for students.
C.It should be used without limits.
D.It should be banned.
Passage 2
In 1240, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II built Castel del Monte on a lonely hill in central Puglia, where he had a perfect view of approaching enemies. He probably never imagined the enemies might be tourists one day. But these days, the old castle has been polished clean, and hundreds of multicolored Pullman buses snake up the winding roads to its grounds, now filled with T-shirt stands, Coca-Cola signs and a 200-car parking lot. All this thanks to the fact that UNESCO has designated (认定) it a World Heritage Site in 1996.
Officially, UNESCO honors places that exemplify an area’s ancestry, with the purpose of ensuring they are preserved. Unofficially, this designation is a kind of fairy dust that often turns little-known cultural sites into overnight tourist sensations. This is both a gift and a cuss. Lisa Mastny, senior adviser to the World Watch Institute, says tourism is double-edged for places considered of “outstanding value to humanity. It offers many poor communities the chance to obtain financial rewards, but also threatens the very resources —human and natural—upon which the industry is ultimately built”.
There is growing awareness that assigning UNESCO designation is worthless — or worse, harmful — without some kind of follow-up preservation program. “In the early days there wasn’t much attention given to what would happen once these site s became World Heritage. But that’s changing slowly,” says Joseph King, director of the sites unit at the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM). In Africa, a 12-year training program is currently underway to teach locals not only how to preserve their immovable cultural heritage, but how to use it for economic development. In Eastern Europe, where tourism is a relatively new thing, cities are looking for help in figuring out where to draw the line between preserving historical centers and promoting urban development.
1.What can we learn about Castel del Monte?
A.It was built to enjoy the view. B.It has become a hot tourist spot.
C.It has to make way for a shopping mall. D.It failed to win UNESCO designation in 1996.
2.Which word is closest in meaning to the underlined word “cuss” in paragraph 2?
A.Solution. B.Promise. C.Drawback. D.Chance.
3.How does the author support King’s words in the last paragraph?
A.By quoting experts. B.By analyzing cause and effect.
C.By giving examples. D.By making comparisons.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.Is UNESCO Helpful in Driving Global Tourism?
B.How Can a Place Be Included in the UNESCO List?
C.Why Is It Important to Market World Heritage Site Tours?
D.Does Identifying World Heritage Sites Do More Harm Than Good?
Passage 3
An unpleasant smell floated into my nose as the bowl of fried stinky tofu settled onto my grandmother’s dinner table. I immediately sat back. The smell ruined my appetite, and I pushed the dish away.
“It’s supposed to stink. Just give it a try!” my grandmother said.
Holding my breath, I unwillingly took a bite. To my surprise, the tofu beneath the fried skin was warm, soft, and mouthwatering. Thus, stinky tofu became more than a household tradition. It became my favorite dish.
Along with the stinky tofu, I would meet my Uncle Chan on every visit. As an immature boy, I never understood my uncle’s condition of Down syndrome(唐氏综合征).He was an unfriendly and terrible creature in my eyes. He constantly walked around the house, talking to himself. Whenever he was within view, I would run away in fear.
However, one day, my view of my uncle suddenly changed. I was just getting out of my bed when I heard soft steps approaching. It was my uncle. My muscles froze. He slowly sat next to me and touched my face gently, as a mother would stroke (抚摸)a baby. A wide smile emerged from his blank expression. How beautiful his smile was! I could not help but smile back. My fear disappeared gradually, and my muscles relaxed.
My uncle very much resembles stinky tofu. Stinky tofu smells unpleasant on the outside, yet feels warm and soft in the inside. Like stinky tofu, my uncle’s Down syndrome made me keep my distance at first. Yet, I learned that deep inside, he is harmless and has a loving nature.
The outside and inside of the stinky tofu exist as two extremely different worlds. Perhaps that is what makes it such a tasty dish. Not only is it delicious, stinky tofu offers a valuable lesson: never judge people at first glance, for true beauty comes from the inside.
1.Why did stinky tofu become the author’s favorite dish?
A.It was related to family tradition. B.It turned out to be quite delicious.
C.Grandma encouraged him to try it. D.His appetite for food had increased.
2.The author’s attitude towards Uncle Chan changed when________.
A.Chan’s footsteps woke up the author
B.Chan showed his friendliness to the author
C.Chan displayed his love towards his mother
D.Chan’s blank expression made the author smile
3.What is purpose in comparing his uncle to stinky tofu?
A.To highlight the nature of Uncle Chan B.To analyze the family relationship
C.To describe a childhood memory D.To introduce a traditional Chinese food
4.What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage?
A.We shouldn’t judge by appearances. B.A person’s taste changes over time.
C.Blood is thicker than water. D.You are what you eat.
Passage 4
Fantasy author George R. R. Martin has officially spent 12 years working on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth part in the series that excited the book fans. With no publishing date in sight, one tech-savvy (精通科技的) fan decided to write the story himself, or rather, he asked ChatGPT to write it for him. Surprisingly, the AI quickly produced a 683,276-word work. But this raises an important question: Can AI programs like ChatGPT really produce the kind of writing that moves us?
“I think there is a misunderstanding that large language models like ChatGPT are not very good at writing,” an author Sean Michaels says. “In fact, they can do it easily and quite well, just like all the image-generating (生成) software can do things like making photos in the style of David Lynch.”
For his novel Do You Remember Being Born, in which a poet is approached by a tech company to co-author a collection of poems with their AI, Michaels created a special type of ChatGPT called “Moorebot”, which through training learned to write in the style of real-world poet Marianne Moore.
Although some writers oppose the rise of AI out of concern for their employability, others have put the debate in an older, broader dialogue on the meaning and purpose of art. The Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has openly expressed his dislike of machine learning. Looking beyond the standard definition of creativity — creating something new and original — Kaufman describes art as any form of expression that establishes an emotional connection between people.
Even if AI were capable of writing something emotional, which Michaels claimed it can, Kaufman would refuse to recognize this as art because it cannot establish a link between reader and author. “If I read a poem, and that poem moves me,” he said in a statement on AI, “I am in love with the person who wrote it. I can't be in love with a computer program. I can't, because it isn't anything.”
1.Why did a fan of The Winds of Winter decide to write the story with ChatGPT?
A.To help Martin finish the series. B.To meet the needs of book fans.
C.To test the ability of ChatGPT. D.To raise an important question on AI.
2.What is the attitude of Sean Michaels towards AI programs?
A.Unclear. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Unconcerned.
3.Which of the following can be considered as art according to Charlie Kaufman?
A.An Al-generated painting. B.A perfect copy of a famous artist.
C.The tech fan's 683,276-word work. D.A 6-year-old girl's drawing to her mum.
4.What can be the best title of the text?
A.Can AI Create True Art? B.The Fading of Great Poets.
C.The Rise and Fall of AI Programs. D.Can AI Have a Promising Future?

Passage 1
I am a good mother of three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent.
I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓言) mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.
So here’s what I want to tell you today: Get a life — a real life, not a desire of the next promotion (提升), the bigger paycheck, or the larger house. Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure (空闲), it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.
It’s so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It’s so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in some ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.
I learned to love the journey, not the destination (目的地). I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.
By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived.
1.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.make a living rather than live a real life
B.work rather than enjoy life
C.waste a lot in life
D.forget the most important lessons in life
3.How did the author form her view of life?
A.Through social experience.
B.By learning from her friends.
C.Through an unfortunate experience.
D.From her children and husband.
4.What’s the author’s attitude toward work?
A.Do it well to serve others.
B.Earn enough money to make life better.
C.Try your best to get a higher position and a pay raise.
D.Don’t let it affect your real life.
Passage 2
For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighbouring countries, the parent teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?
Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article, I’ll describe three no win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the colour of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is — politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg — the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority — someone who actually knows something —and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
1.Why does the author compare the parent teen war to a border conflict?
A.Both can continue for generations. B.Both are about where to draw the line.
C.Neither has any clear winner. D.Neither can be put to an end.
2.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.The teens accuse their parents of misleading them.
B.The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
C.The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
D.The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.
3.Why do parents and teens want to be right?
A.To give orders to the other. B.To know more than the other.
C.To gain respect from the other. D.To get the other to behave properly.
4.What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.Solutions to the parent teen problems. B.Examples of the parent teen war.
C.Causes of the parent teen conflicts. D.Future of the parent teen relationship.
Passage 3
Cellphone technology has certainly evolved as predicted over the last few decades, but what about the debate over their use in schools?
Back in 2006, one fault line was already emerging between educators concerned about cellphone misuse in class and parents concerned about not being able to communicate with their children. The popularity of phone bans has yo-yoed since then, from a high of 91 percent of public schools prohibiting nonacademic use of cellphones in the 2009-2010 school year; the number dipped as low as 66percent in 2015-2016 but has since rebounded to 76 percent in 2021-2022.
Of course, the debate over cellphones in school has never been as clear-cut as educators vs. parents.
Middle school administrator Matt Levinson saw a fork in the road ahead of teachers in a 2009 essay: “They can continue fighting a losing battle and draw cruel lines in the sand, confiscating (没收) cellphones or banning their use during school hours. Or, they can seize the teachable moment, and shift their approaches to embrace technology and engage students with these devices.”
But for teachers in schools without a clear cellphone policy, finding those academic applications for smartphones amid the TikTok distractions (干扰) is no easy task.
Psychology professor Jean M. Twenge, who dug through data from 11,000 teens to conclude that “not all screen time is created equal,” laid down some dos and don’ts for cellphone access in the blog.
But not everyone is optimistic about finding a middle ground between an endless distraction and a productive learning tool. In a widely read 2016 essay, teacher Steve Gardiner had another word for his students’ relationships to their phones: addiction, “We have incentives to promote attendance and graduation, but many teenagers need help, because their bodies are in the classroom, but their minds are inside their cellphones,” he said.
For some teachers, that cellphone dependency has gotten bad enough to sour them on the profession entirely. That’s the story of high school biology teacher Mitchell Rutherford, who decided to quit teaching because of the exhaustion (筋疲力尽) he felt from competing with cellphones for students’ attention.
1.What can be learned about the popularity of phone bans?
A.It does benefit teachers a lot. B.It has decreased the misuse in class.
C.It allows for nonacademic use. D.It experiences ups and downs.
2.What does the underlined phrase “a fork in the road” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.A U-turning road. B.A teaching guidebook.
C.Different choices. D.Various teaching styles.
3.What’s Steve Gardiner’s attitude toward students’ using cellphones?
A.Negative. B.Mixed. C.Tolerant. D.Uncaring.
4.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.Some teachers in school are not capable of teaching.
B.The use of cellphones in school should be banned.
C.It is beneficial to compete with cellphones for students’ focus.
D.Getting along with students makes some teachers feel exhausted.
Passage 4
In one horrible film plot, AI eventually outsmarts humans and takes over computers and factories. In another, large language models (LLMs) of the sort that power generative AI like ChatGPT give bad guys the know — how to create destructive cyberweapons.
It is time to think hard about these film plots, not because they have become more probable but because policymakers around the world are considering measures to guard against them. The idea that AI could drive humans to extinction is speculative — no one yet knows how such a threat might materialise and no common methods exist for determining what counts as risky. Plenty of research needs to be done before standards and rules can be set.
Governments cannot ignore a technology that could change the world deeply. Regulators have been too slow in the past, but there is danger, too, in acting hurriedly. If they go too fast, policymakers could create global rules that are aimed at the wrong problems and are ineffective against the real ones.
Because of the computing resources and technical skills required, only a handful of companies have so far developed powerful “frontier” models. New hurried regulations could easily block out competitors to the “handful of companies”, especially because these companies are working closely with governments on writing the rule book. A focus on extreme risks is likely to make regulators careful of open-source models, which are freely available and can easily be revised.
The best that governments can do now is to set up the basic systems to study the technology and its potential risks, and ensure that those working on the problem have enough resources. As AI develops further, regulators will have a far better idea of what risks they are guarding against, and consequently what the rule book should look like. A fully mature body could eventually take shape. But creating it will take time and reflection.
1.What does the first paragraph function as?
A.An argument. B.An explanation. C.A lead-in. D.A comment.
2.What does the author think of AI driving humans to extinction?
A.He believes it is a realistic possibility.
B.He considers it fictional and unworthy for policymakers to pay attention to.
C.He views it as an uncertain threat that needs more research.
D.He perceives it as a seemingly reasonable situation that requires serious consideration.
3.What is the harm of regulators’ going too fast on the AI issue?
A.Competition in this area is prevented. B.The development of AI is restricted.
C.AI will be applied to a limited degree. D.The public will be misled about danger.
4.Which can be the best title of the text?
A.AI: a Real Threat? B.Don’t Rush into Policing AI
C.AI: Humans’ Friend or Enemy? D.Time for Government to Regulate AI

Passage 1
It was June 15, and in two days I would be turning thirty. I was insecure about entering a new decade of my life and feared that my best years were now behind me.
My daily routine included going to the gym for a workout before going to work. Every morning I would see my friend Nicholas at the gym. He was seventy-nine years old and in terrific shape. As I greeted Nicholas on this particular day, he noticed I wasn’t full of my usual vitality and asked if there was anything wrong. I told him I was feeling anxious about turning thirty. I wondered how I would look back on my life once I reached Nicholas’ sage, so I asked him, “What was the best time of your life?”
Without hesitation, Nicholas replied, “Well, Joe, this is my philosophical answer to your philosophical question.”

Passage 2
In the coming era of budget cuts to education, remote learning could become a common thing.
The appeal to those in charge of education budgets to trade teachers for technology is so strong that they tend to ignore the disadvantages of remote learning. School facilities are expensive to build and maintain, and teachers are expensive to employ. It’s true that online classes do not require buildings and each class can host hundreds of people, which can result in greater savings, but moving away from a traditional classroom in which a living, breathing human being teaches and interacts with students daily would be a disaster.
Physically attending school has hidden benefits: interacting with peers and communicating with teachers are important skills to cultivate(培养)in young people. Moreover, schools are more than simple places of traditional learning. They are also places that provide meals, places where students receive mental help and other support.
Those policy-makers are often fascinated by the latest technology in education and its potential to transform education overnight. But online education does not allow a teacher to keep a struggling student after class and offer help. Educational videos may deliver academic content, but they are unable to make eye contact or assess a student’s level of engagement. Distance education will never match the personal teaching in a traditional classroom. In their first 18 years of life. American children spend only 9% of their time in school. Yet teachers are expected to prepare them to be responsible citizens, cultivate their social skills, encourage successful time management, and improve their capacity to compete in a competitive job market. Given these expectations, schools should not become permanently “remote”.
The power of the classroom is rooted in the qualities of the people gathered in the same place, at the same time, including their nature, empathy, devotion and so on. Technology, no matter how advanced, should simply be a tool of a good teacher.
1.What is one possible benefit of students attending school physically?
A.Transforming traditional teaching.
B.Eating nutritionally-well-balanced-meals.
C.Growing into living and breathing human beings.
D.Developing relationships with peers and teachers.
2.What does the author think of the latest technology in education?
A.It may reduce face-to-face interaction.
B.It may make many teachers jobless.
C.It may add to student’s financial burden.
D.It may revolutionize classroom teaching.
3.What does the underline word mean in paragraph 4.
A.complexity B.inequality C.responsibility D.capability
4.Why couldn’t technology replace a good teacher?
A.It lacks humanity. B.It can‘t meet personal needs.
C.It is still not advanced. D.It can’t track students’ growth.

Passage 1
Grace Hemingway gifted her son, Earnest, a copy of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem Hiawatha on his sixth birthday. While it’s hard to say how much her choice of gift influenced Earnest Hemingway at the time, he grew up to become one of the most famous writers in history.
Books can make for charming gifts. Giving a book as a gift to someone is much more than a simple exchange of goods.
When giving books, think about your recipients’ (接受者) favorite. It is worth the time to try and find a rare copy, like first editions or signed copies. They’ll be delighted by the effort. Are your friends stuck in a dullness and in need of some motivation? You can gift them a book that offers inspiration. Also, not mainstream yet useful guides related to their career are helpful.
A book when received as a gift has meaning to the recipient by itself if you’ve put some thought into it. An inscription (题词) adds to the appeal of your gift by making it more individualized. Without an inscription, although still meaningful, the book is just a book indistinguishable from hundreds of thousands of copies out there. A case for not penning down an inscription is that it makes it easier for them to pass it on to someone else if they don’t like the book.
Wondering if you should give your recipient a hardcover or a paperback? There is no universal preference among readers. Some like the paperbacks because of the convenience, easy to carry around and travel with. But many people, including me, prefer hardcovers because they’re more traditional and last much longer. A study designed to find a relation between the weight of wine bottles and their prices found that in most cases the weight of a wine bottle related positively with the price. The weight helped consumers perceive the wine as better.
In a word, books can make for memorable gifts. A good book gifted thoughtfully will create a pleasant memory.
1.Why is Earnest Hemingway mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To share a book. B.To present a fact.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To make a comparison.
2.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.Who the gift should be given. B.How a book should be presented.
C.Where a proper book can be found. D.What kinds of books can be chosen as gifts.
3.Why is an inscription advised to be included in a gifted book?
A.To make the book more personal.
B.To record the giver’s reading experience.
C.To make the content of the book more appealing.
D.To allow the book to be more pleasing to the eye.
4.What does the author want to convey when it comes to the study about wine bottles?
A.Good wine is all in heavier bottles.
B.The weight of a book determines its price.
C.A hardcover book is often valued more as a gift.
D.The price of wine depends on the quality of its bottle.

Passage 1
People send messages every day on social media. These online conversations can have a huge impact and shape how societies make decisions. But there is a growing problem. Sometimes people don’t listen to each other and can say really hurtful things. Would it be better if there were an advisor in online talks? We tried to use artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) to carry out this task.
So, we did an online experiment with pairs of people discussing a challenging topic. In the first group, one participant (参与者) in each pair had an AI helper. The AI tried to make sure the discussion was polite and respectful. It didn’t change the participant’s point of view, though! The participant could accept or refuse the suggestions or completely edit the message an AI helper offers. In the control group, the people had a conversation on the same topic but neither of the participants had an AI helper. After the discussions ended, the pairs shared their thoughts on how good the conversation was.
In our study, the participants accepted the AI’s suggestions two thirds of the time. When they used the AI’s suggestions, the messages became more positive and polite. Participants whose partners used the AI reported feeling better about the conversation. They were more willing to understand and respect each other, even if they still disagreed. The people who used the AI themselves didn’t report a huge change in how they felt about the conversation. However, they were more willing to respect the opinions of others!
The results of our study show that AI did a good job of making online discussions polite. But you don’t need a reminder to be respectful. Even in the vast digital world, each conversation matters. Your choice to be kind and respectful can make a big difference. It can promote a culture of healthy discussion and understanding. This is also true for real-life conversations.
1.What do the underlined words “this task” in paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A.Starting talks. B.Guiding conversations.
C.Changing views. D.Sending messages.
2.What do we learn about participants with AI helpers?
A.They responded to AI politely. B.They changed views as AI suggested.
C.They tended to respect others’ views. D.They experienced mixed feelings.

Passage 2
Are you addicted to computer games?Do you stay up all night playing them?Do you feel happy after you play computer games?
There’s no doubt that the excitement of games these days makes them hard to put down.We are attracted by the choice when it comes to gaming:You can role play —creating your own fantastic characters and stories, giving you a chance to step out of everyday life into an imaginary world. And there are shooting games where you can let out your anger and depression in violent situations where you kill people with guns. You can get excited from the games.
However, can these kinds of games really be fun and can being absorbed in virtual reality be good for us?Should we worry about their effects on our health?Popular games like Grand Theft Auto have been blamed for everything from falling results at school to causing acts of extreme violence.Internet safety adviser,Alan MacKenzie, thinks “any people understandably will just think that a game is just a game, not realizing the exact content that’s in there”.He gives an example of the violence, which he says is “wholly inappropriate for anybody, not to mention children”.
Others will argue that gaming is a harmless form of entertainment. There is evidence that playing video games could actually be good for us.Some games like Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft are educational and using games certainly can help children learn good qualities.Studies have also shown that the skills used in playing games can cause growth in certain areas of the brain, the ability to think in 3D and even improve our eyesight.
Video game players are also no longer just simple creatures. For some, gaming is having a positive effect on their social lives with games like Halo and World of Warcraft often being played in groups. When your group works together to win the game, your sense of achievement is higher than when winning by yourself.
So every coin has two sides. It seems that today gaming isn’t just for game fans and if used in a proper way,we can all take part.If video games have two sides, what side do you stand by?

Passage 1
“I can’t connect with your characters.” I kept hearing the same feedback and was unable to understand why and not sure what to do. I was a character-driven writer. How could I mess up the one thing I was supposed to be good at? I was determined to tell my agent that these characters were real. After all, I knew they were real. My main character Lotus had lived inside me for years. I just needed to describe her on the page.
I wrote and edited for a year, trying to respond to this agent’s feedback. But Lotus’ personality began to disappear. I tried to have her make “better” decisions, wear smarter fashion, and have more friends, as my agent said she acted “childish” and was “lonely”. And when this agent finally parted ways with me, I felt like I had failed. Now with time and distance, I realize I tried to fit Lotus into a normal style to please my agent. And as a result, Lotus lost her personality.
When that agent discouraged me from writing Lotus as autistic (自闭的), he said that would make Lotus seem more “vulnerable (脆弱的)”. I didn’t want Lotus to seem vulnerable. Lotus’ autism is what makes her powerful, I tried to explain. But from a normal perspective, Lotus’ autism could only be seen as a weakness.
Unsure of how to tell my agent of the strength and power autistic women hold, I began to write Lotus as “normal”. And I failed. After all, what do I know about being normal? My whole life, autism was my nature. Not being diagnosed until 2020, I thought the way I saw the world was “normal”.
My current agent encourages me to write from my neurodivergent (神经多样性的) experience. With this invitation, I revisited Lotus and saw her the way I first wrote her. And when I did, the characters and the story began to make more sense.
Knowing my characters as neurodivergent not only gives me joy as a writer, but it has produced my strongest writing. For so long, I’ve fought against the advice to “write what I know”, partly because I didn’t know what I actually knew. I didn’t know I was neurodivergent. But as I explored my life experience, my writing is stronger.
There is a power to our life experience. It’s not a limitation on our craft, but a swinging open of the gates.
1.How did the author feel when receiving the repeated response from the first agent?
A.Indifferent. B.Confused.
C.Removed. D.Desperate.
2.Why did Lotus’s personality lose?
A.Because Lotus no longer lived inside the author.
B.Because Lotus was considered childish and lonely.
C.Because the first agent failed to sympathize with Lotus.
D.Because the author attempted to make the first agent satisfied.
3.What do we know about the author?
A.She regretted parting with the first agent.
B.She owed her success in life to autism.
C.She knew about her autism in early years.
D.She was inspired by her autistic experience.
4.What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A.Hold your dream regardless of discouragement.
B.Following authority is the barrier to success.
C.Be honest to yourself and write from your heart.
D.Living with a disease inspires masterpieces.

1.Why did the author mention the US survey data in Paragraph 2?
A.To criticize the use of ChatGPT in education.
B.To show the popularity of ChatGPT among students.
C.To show the places of using ChatGPT for academic tasks.
D.To highlight the negative effects of ChatGPT on academic integrity.
2.What is the concern that led some universities and schools to ban the use of ChatGPT?
A.The tool is too expensive.
B.The tool is not user-friendly.
C.The tool can cause physical harm to students.
D.The tool may be used to spread inaccurate information.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.D 4.A

根据第一段“He probably never imagined the enemies might be tourists one day.
根据后文“Lisa Mastny, senior adviser to the World Watch Institute, says tourism is double-edged for places considered of “outstanding value to humanity. It offers many poor communities the chance to obtain financial rewards, but also threatens the very resources —human and natural—upon which the industry is ultimately built”.
根据最后一段““In the early days there wasn’t much attention given to what would happen once these site s became World Heritage.
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.A 4.A
根据第三段中“To my surprise, the tofu beneath the fried skin was warm, soft, and mouthwatering. Thus, stinky tofu became more than a household tradition. It became my favorite dish.”(令我惊讶的是,炸皮下面的豆腐是温暖的,柔软的,令人垂涎。
根据第五段中“He slowly sat next to me and touched my face gently, as a mother would stroke (抚摸)a baby.”(他慢慢地坐在我旁边,轻轻地抚摸着我的脸,就像母亲抚摸婴儿一样。)以及“My fear disappeared gradually, and my muscles relaxed.”(我的恐惧渐渐消失了,我的肌肉也放松了。)
根据倒数第二段“My uncle very much resembles stinky tofu. Stinky tofu smells unpleasant on the outside, yet feels warm and soft in the inside. Like stinky tofu, my uncle’s Down syndrome made me keep my distance at first. Yet, I learned that deep inside, he is harmless and has a loving nature.”(我叔叔很像臭豆腐。 故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Not only is it delicious, stinky tofu offers a valuable lesson: never judge people at first glance, for true beauty comes from the inside.”(臭豆腐不仅美味,还给我们上了宝贵的一课:永远不要第一眼就对人做出判断,因为真正的美是发自内心的。) 故选A项。
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D 4.A
根据第一段中的“With no publishing date in sight, one tech-savvy (精通科技的) fan decided to write the story himself, or rather, he asked ChatGPT to write it for him.(由于没有出版日期,一个精通科技的粉丝决定自己写这个故事,或者更确切地说,他让ChatGPT为他写。)”
根据第二段“I think there is a misunderstanding that large language models like ChatGPT are not very good at writing,” an author Sean Michaels says. “In fact, they can do it easily and quite well, just like all the image-generating(生成) software can do things like making photos in the style of David Lynch.”(作家Sean Michaels在接受BBC采访时表示:“我认为有一种误解,认为像ChatGPT这样的大型语言模型不擅长写散文。”“事实上,它们可以很容易地做到这一点,就像所有的图像生成软件都可以按照韦斯·安德森或大卫·林奇的风格制作照片一样。”)”可知,Sean Michael认为人们对AI创作存在误解,人们觉得AI不善于创造出散文风格的文章,但实际上AI可以很轻松创造出来,并且做得很好。第三段也提到 Sean Michael 还和科技公司合作进行AI创作诗集。综上可知,Sean Michael 对AI持支持态度。故选C。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Kaufman describes art as any form of expression that establishes an emotional connection between people. (Kaufman将艺术描述为任何能在人与人之间建立情感联系的表达形式。)”可知,Kaufman认为任何建立人与人之间情感联系的作品表达都是艺术。D项“六岁小女孩送给妈妈的画。”展现人与人之间的情感联系。故选D。
4.主旨大意题。根据第一段“But this raises an important question: Can AI programs like ChatGPT really produce the kind of writing that moves us and speaks to our souls? (但这提出了一个重要的问题:像ChatGPT这样的人工智能程序真的能写出打动我们、与我们的灵魂对话的作品吗?)”及全文可知,文章都是围绕AI和艺术作品。所以“Can AI Create True Art?( AI能创造真正的艺术吗?)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选A。

故选A。
根据文章第四段画线的前句“It’s so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. (我们很容易浪费我们的生命,我们的日子,我们的小时,我们的分钟。)”以及后面的句子“Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in some ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all. (在我身上发生了非常非常糟糕的事情,从某种程度上改变了我的生活,如果我有选择的话,它永远不会被改变。我从中学到的,在今天看来,是最艰难的一课。)”可知,糊口谋生很容易,但是要想过自己想要的生活是不容易的。从而推知,画线句“It’s so easy to exist instead of to live.” 故选A。
根据第四段中的“I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in some ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all. (很多年前我就学会了生活。一件非常非常糟糕的事情发生在我身上,它在某些方面改变了我的生活,如果我有选择的话,它根本不会改变。我从中学到的,在今天看来,是最艰难的一课)”可知,作者是从过去的那场不好的经历中形成了自己的人生观,故选C。
4.推理判断题。根据第一段中的“I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent. (我尽量不让我的职业妨碍我做一个好父母)”以及第三段中的“So here’s what I want to tell you today: Get a life—a real life, not a desire of the next promotion(提升), the bigger paycheck, or the larger house. Get a life in which you are not alone. (所以,这就是我今天想告诉你们的:过一种生活——一种真实的生活,而不是渴望下一次升职、更高的薪水或更大的房子。过一种不孤单的生活。)”可推知,作者杜绝生活受到工作的影响。故选D。
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.C 4.A
根据第一段的“Like a border conflict between neighbouring countries, the parent teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?(就像邻国之间的边境冲突一样,父母与青少年之间的战争是关于界限的:在我能控制的事情和你所做的事情之间的界限在哪里呢?)”
根据第二段的“From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. (从父母的角度来看,他们争吵的唯一原因是他们的青少年完全不讲道理)”以及“Both feel trapped.(双方都觉得陷入了困境)”可知,双方陷入了困境的原因是父母认为是青少年的原因导致冲突,而青少年则认为是父母的原因导致冲突,所以划线部分意思是 “青少年指责他们的父母引发了冲突”。故选B。
3.细节理解题。根据第三段的“Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is — politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg — the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority — someone who actually knows something —and therefore to command respect.(第三,需要证明自己是对的。无论话题是什么——政治、物理定律,还是打鸡蛋的正确方法——这些争论的重点是证明你是对的,而对方是错的,因为双方都希望被视为权威——一个真正懂点东西的人——从而赢得尊重)”可知,父母和青少年都想证明自己是对的是为了赢得对方的尊重。故选C。
4.推理判断题。根据第三段的“In this article, I’ll describe three no win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap.(在这篇文章中,我将描述三种通常出现在青少年和父母之间的两败俱伤的情况,然后提出一些摆脱困境的方法)”以及后面描述了三种情况可知,接下来作者很可能会讨论解决父母与青少年问题的方法。故选A。
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.A 4.B
根据第二段“The popularity of phone bans has yo-yoed since then, from a high of 91 percent of public schools prohibiting nonacademic use of cellphones in the 2009-2010 school year; the number dipped as low as 66percent in 2015-2016 but has since rebounded to 76 percent in 2021-2022.(从那时起,禁止使用手机的普及程度就一直在下降,在2009至2010学年,91%的公立学校禁止非学术用途的手机;2015年至2016年,这一数字曾降至66%,但在2021年至2022年反弹至76%)”可知,手机禁令的流行经历了起伏。故选D。
根据划线词下文“They can continue fighting a losing battle and draw cruel lines in the sand, confiscating (没收) cellphones or banning their use during school hours. Or, they can seize the teachable moment, and shift their approaches to embrace technology and engage students with these devices.(他们可以继续打一场必败的仗,在沙地上划下残酷的界线,没收手机或禁止在上课时间使用手机。或者,他们可以抓住教学的时机,改变他们的方法,拥抱技术,让学生们与这些设备互动)”可知,教师面前有两条路,他们可以没收手机,在上课时间禁止使用手机。或者,他们可以抓住教学时机,转变方法,拥抱科技,让学生使用这些设备。由此可知,划线词组a fork in the road意为“岔路口”,比喻做出不同的选择,与C项“不同的选择”含义相同。故选C。
3.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In a widely read 2016 essay, teacher Steve Gardiner had another word for his students’ relationships to their phones: addiction, “We have incentives to promote attendance and graduation, but many teenagers need help, because their bodies are in the classroom, but their minds are inside their cellphones,” he said.(在一篇被广泛阅读的2016年文章中,史蒂夫·加德纳老师用另一个词来形容学生与手机的关系:上瘾。“我们有提高出勤率和毕业率的动机,但许多青少年需要帮助,因为他们的身体在教室里,但他们的思想在手机里,”他说)”可知,史蒂夫·加德纳认为手机导致学生上瘾。由此推知,他对学生们使用手机这一现象持消极态度。故选A。
根据最后一段“That’s the story of high school biology teacher Mitchell Rutherford, who decided to quit teaching because of the exhaustion (筋疲力尽) he felt from competing with cellphones for students’ attention.(这就是高中生物老师米切尔·卢瑟福的故事,他决定辞职,因为与手机竞争学生的注意力让他感到筋疲力尽)”可知,教师对学生依赖手机的现状无力挽救,所以想离职。
【答案】1.C 2.C 3.A 4.B
第一段“In one horrible film plot, AI eventually outsmarts humans and takes over computers and factories. In another, large language models (LLMs) of the sort that power generative AI like ChatGPT give bad guys the know — how to create destructive cyberweapons.(在一部恐怖的电影情节中,人工智能最终战胜了人类,接管了电脑和工厂。在另一种情况下,为ChatGPT等生成式人工智能提供动力的大型语言模型(LLMs)为坏人提供了制造破坏性网络武器的技术。)”提到了两个电影情节中人工智能的行为,第二段“It is time to think hard about these film plots, not because they have become more probable but because policymakers around the world are considering measures to guard against them.(现在是认真思考这些电影情节的时候了,不是因为它们变得更有可能发生,而是因为世界各地的政策制定者正在考虑采取措施防范它们。)”
根据文章第二段“The idea that AI could drive humans to extinction is speculative—no one yet knows how such a threat might materialise and no common methods exist for determining what counts as risky. Plenty of research needs to be done before standards and rules can be set.(人工智能可能导致人类灭绝的想法是推测性的——没有人知道这种威胁如何实现,也没有通用的方法来确定什么是危险的。在制定标准和规则之前,需要进行大量的研究。)”可知,作者认为人工智能可能导致人类灭绝的想法是推测性的,需要不断研究探索。故选C。
3.细节理解题。根据第三段“If they go too fast, policymakers could create global rules that are aimed at the wrong problems and are ineffective against the real ones.(如果它们走得太快,政策制定者可能会制定针对错误问题的全球规则,而对真正的问题则无效。)”和第四段“Because of the computing resources and technical skills required, only a handful of companies have so far developed powerful “frontier” models. New hurried regulations could easily block out competitors to the “handful of companies”, especially because these companies are working closely with governments on writing the rule book. (由于需要计算资源和技术技能,迄今为止只有少数公司开发了强大的“前沿”模型。匆忙出台的新法规很容易将“少数公司”的竞争对手拒之门外,尤其是因为这些公司正与政府密切合作制定规则。)”可知,监管机构在人工智能问题上走得太快的坏处是这一领域的竞争受到阻碍。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第三段“If they go too fast, policymakers could create global rules that are aimed at the wrong problems and are ineffective against the real ones.(如果它们走得太快,政策制定者可能会制定针对错误问题的全球规则,而对真正的问题则无效。)”,第四段“Because of the computing resources and technical skills required, only a handful of companies have so far developed powerful “frontier” models. New hurried regulations could easily block out competitors to the “handful of companies”, especially because these companies are working closely with governments on writing the rule book. (由于需要计算资源和技术技能,迄今为止只有少数公司开发了强大的“前沿”模型。匆忙出台的新法规很容易将“少数公司”的竞争对手拒之门外,尤其是因为这些公司正与政府密切合作制定规则。)”和最后一段“As AI develops further, regulators will have a far better idea of what risks they are guarding against, and consequently what the rule book should look like. A fully mature body could eventually take shape. But creating it will take time and reflection. (随着人工智能的进一步发展,监管机构将对自己要防范的风险有更好的了解,从而知道规则手册应该是什么样子。一个完全成熟的身体最终会成形。但创造它需要时间和思考。)”可知,本文主要讲的是世界各地的政策制定者正在考虑采取措施来防范人工智能发展太快,但是监管机构在人工智能问题上走得太快是会带来一些坏处的,因此B项“Don’t Rush into Policing AI(不要急于监管人工智能)”作文章标题最合适。故选B。

【答案】1.D 2.A 3.D 4.A
根据文章第三段“Physically attending school has hidden benefits: interacting with peers and communicating with teachers are important skills to cultivate(培养)in young people.(亲自上学有隐藏的好处:与同龄人互动和与老师沟通是培养年轻人的重要技能。)”
根据文章第四段“Educational videos may deliver academic content, but they are unable to make eye contact or assess a student’s level of engagement. (教育视频可以提供学术内容,但它们无法进行眼神交流,也无法评估学生的参与程度。)”可知,作者认为最新的教育技术无法提供面对面的交流,如眼神交流,也无法评估学生的参与程度。故选A。
选项A“complexity(复杂)”;选项B“inequality(不平等)”;选项C“responsibility(责任)”;选项D“capability(能力)”。 故选D。
根据文章最后一段“The power of the classroom is rooted in the qualities of the people gathered in the same place, at the same time, including their nature, empathy, devotion and so on. Technology, no matter how advanced, should simply be a tool of a good teacher.(可知,课堂的力量根植于聚集在同一地点、同一时间的人们的品质,包括他们的本性、同理心、奉献精神等等。技术,无论多么先进,都应该是一个好老师的工具。)”可知,科技无论多么先进,都应该是老师的教学工具,因为科技并不具备人性。故选A。

根据第一段“Grace Hemingway gifted her son, Earnest, a copy of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem Hiawatha on his sixth birthday. While it’s hard to say how much her choice of gift influenced Earnest Hemingway at the time, he grew up to become one of the most famous writers in history.(格蕾丝·海明威在儿子欧内斯特6岁生日时送给他一本亨利·沃兹沃斯·朗费罗的史诗《海华沙》。虽然很难说她对礼物的选择对当时的欧内斯特·海明威有多大影响,但他长大后成为了历史上最著名的作家之一)”可知,本段提到Earnest Hemingway是为了引出书籍作为礼物的主题。故选C项。
2.主旨大意题。根据第三段“When giving books, think about your recipients’ (接受者) favorite. It is worth the time to try and find a rare copy, like first editions or signed copies. They’ll be delighted by the effort. Are your friends stuck in a dullness and in need of some motivation? You can gift them a book that offers inspiration. Also, not mainstream yet useful guides related to their career are helpful.(送书的时候,想想接受者最喜欢的。值得花时间去寻找一本稀有的书,比如初版或签名本。他们会为你的努力感到高兴。你的朋友是否陷入了沉闷,需要一些动力?你可以送给他们一本鼓舞人心的书。此外,与他们的职业相关的非主流但有用的指南也很有帮助)”可知,本段主要介绍了选择哪些种类的书可以作为礼物送给别人。故选D项。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段“A book when received as a gift has meaning to the recipient by itself if you’ve put some thought into it. An inscription (题词) adds to the appeal of your gift by making it more individualized.(一本书作为礼物收到时,如果你花点心思,它本身就对接受者有意义。题词使你的礼物更加个性化,从而增加了它的吸引力)”可知,题词可以让你的礼物更加个性化,增加礼物的吸引力。因此,建议在送书作为礼物时加入题词是为了让这本书更加个性化,更能够表达送礼人的心意和情感。故选A项。
根据“Wondering if you should give your recipient a hardcover or a paperback? There is no universal preference among readers. Some like the paperbacks because of the convenience, easy to carry around and travel with. But many people, including me, prefer hardcovers because they’re more traditional and last much longer. A study designed to find a relation between the weight of wine bottles and their prices found that in most cases the weight of a wine bottle related positively with the price. The weight helped consumers perceive the wine as better.(想知道你应该给收信人一本精装书还是平装书?

3.What does the author want to stress in the last paragraph?
A.The effectiveness of AI in online discussions. B.The significance of respectful communication.
C.The importance of reminders in conversations. D.The balance between technologies and choices.
4.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Can Al remove mean posts? B.Can AI make online talks kinder?
C.How to respect different opinions? D.How to reach an agreement online?

根据第一段中“I kept hearing the same feedback and was unable to understand why and not sure what to do. (我不断听到同样的反馈,却不明白为什么,也不确定该怎么做)”可知,作者收到首位经纪人反复的反馈时感到困惑。故选B项。
2.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Now with time and distance, I realize I tried to fit Lotus into a normal style to please my agent. And as a result, Lotus lost her personality. (现在随着时间推移和冷静思考,我意识到我试图让Lotus符合一种常规风格来取悦我的经纪人。结果,Lotus失去了她的个性)”可知,Lotus失去个性是因为作者试图让首位经纪人满意。故选D项。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Unsure of how to tell my agent of the strength and power autistic women hold, I began to write Lotus as “normal”. And I failed. After all, what do I know about being normal? My whole life, autism was my nature. Not being diagnosed until 2020, I thought the way I saw the world was ‘normal’.(我不知道如何告诉我的经纪人自闭症女性所拥有的力量和力量,我开始把Lotus写为“正常”。我失败了。毕竟,我怎么知道什么是正常人呢?在我的一生中,自闭症是我的天性。直到2020年才被确诊,我认为我看待世界的方式是“正常的”)”、第五段中“My current agent encourages me to write from my neurodivergent (神经多样性的) experience. With this invitation, I revisited Lotus and saw her the way I first wrote her. And when I did, the characters and the story began to make more sense. (我现在的经纪人鼓励我从我的神经多样性经历中进行写作。在这个启发下,我重新审视了Lotus,看到了我最初塑造她的样子。当我这样做时,角色和故事开始变得更有意义)”和第六段中“Knowing my characters as neurodivergent not only gives me joy as a writer, but it has produced my strongest writing. (了解到我的角色具有神经多样性,不仅给我作为作家带来了快乐,还让我写出了最出色的作品)”可知,作者根据自己神经多样性经历进行写作,从自己自闭的经历中获得了灵感。故选D项。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段“There is a power to our life experience. It’s not a limitation on our craft, but a swinging open of the gates. (我们的生活经历蕴含着一种力量。它不是我们写作技巧的限制,而是一扇敞开的大门)”可知,作者鼓励读者认识到自己的生活经验的力量,并从中汲取创作的灵感。因此,作者想要表达的是要对自己诚实,从内心出发写作。故选C项。
