Passage 1
It seems that self-help books are on the best-seller lists these days. 1 They can help you overcome (克服) difficulties or at least think about them more clearly.
More people are turning to self-help books for advice on how to live their lives. In 2023, the sale of these books in the UK rose by 20 percent. 2 Many of the self-help books are written by famous people. These books teach you how to deal with the problems in your life, such as how to get along well with your classmates or workmates, how to manage your time well and how to find happiness in daily life.
3 People have lots of different opinions about this. Julie Hall from London is a big fan of self-help books. After reading more than 300 of them, she set up her own website. 4 “Self-help books can give you the courage and motivation (动力) to do whatever you want to,” she told us. However, a recent research from University of Montreal in Canada might not agree with that. Researchers surveyed (调查) two groups of people. One of the groups had read many self-help books, while the other hadn’t. They found that people in the first group were more anxious and upset.
5 However, it’s always good to know that help is at hand when we need it.
A.The number reached a record of three million.

D.Her website helped women succeed in the business world.
E.There is no single quick solution that can improve our lives.

passage 2
About 90 percent of the world’s population doesn’t need to think about which hand to use when picking up a pair of scissors. 1 . Let’s take a look at some of the myths, mysteries and history of our left-handed friends.
2 . The belief that left-handed people were witches was widespread in medieval Europe, and they could even be killed. In fact, the word “sinister”, meaning harmful or evil, comes from a Latin word for “on the left side.” Even in the 1960s, American children born left-handed were forced to switch hands when writing.
There are also some interesting mysteries concerning right- or left-handed people. The human brain is “cross-wired” with the left brain controlling the right side of the body and vice versa But one University of Oxford study suggests that, in the brains of left-handed people, the two parts are better connected. 3
Unfortunately, there are some mental health issues that can especially affect left-handed people. According to a 2013 Yale University study, lefties seem more likely to suffer from schizophrenia But other studies have linked the left-handed brain with decidedly creative thinking. Though uncertain, yet with artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, there might be some connection.
One area where lefties may have the upper hand is in sports that require quick reaction times. 5 . Ding Ning, for example, is a left-handed table tennis champion with three Olympic gold medals. But if there is an advantage, it’s probably not a result of some special “lefty magic.” Recent studies show that there seems to be no definite connection being left-handed and athletic capability.
In any case, lefties, hold your south pa w high and show the world what you’re made of!
A.It is this disease that has led to their being left-handed
B.Altogether, it’s not a shame to be left-handed
C.But it’s not the same story for the 10 percent who are left-handed
D.Being left-handed hasn’t always been accepted
E.This includes sports like baseball and table tennis
F.This serious disorder can cause people to hear voices or see things that are not real
G.Also, studies say that lefties may have an advantage in language learning
Passage 3
There was a park near my home. But I didn't go there very often. Many people said there was nothing special. One afternoon I went into the park and found it was really small. I walked quickly because there wasn’t much to see. I walked for some time and found myself standing in front of two paths. 1 I found that the two paths were different from each other.
The left one was wide and clean. There were lots of flowers on both sides of the path. Though the flowers weren’t very beautiful, they made me feel good. I decided to take this path. But wait! I looked at the right one. The path didn’t look nice. 2 Grass grew everywhere. For a long time I couldn’t make up my mind.
3 It wasn’t nice, but I didn’t want to give up. At last, I came to the end of the path. Ah! There was a small garden there. It was beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful garden I had ever seen. 4
Many people told me that there was nothing much to see in the park. Now I’d like to tell them that if they had followed the right way, they would have felt differently. But when I told them about what I had seen in the park, they just smiled at me without saying a word. I knew they didn't believe me. They couldn’t even remember that path because it was so small.
5 Don’t be afraid to choose a different path. You may get a big surprise!
A.It looked like it had not been cleaned for months.
B.After a while a strange feeling made me follow the dirty path.
C.There is nothing that I want to see.
D.I told them what happened.
E.“Which way should I go?” I asked myself. I looked at one way, then the other.
F.There were trees, flowers and chairs. I thought it was the nicest part of the park.
G.My trip to the park that day made me understand something about life.

2 The Chinese character of September is the same as 9, so we get this special name. Chinese people, especially the north Chinese, climb the mountains to the peak to enjoy the wonderful scenery, and admire the beauty of chrysanthemum.
Winter Solstice(冬至)
Winter Solstice is on around December 22 or 23 of solar calendar each year. From Winter Solstice on, the daytime will be longer and longer. 3 In the northern region, people eat dumplings and wonton(馄饨), while in the southern region rice balls.

Passage 1
Effective communication is important for all relationships. Learning what questions to ask can improve how you work with team members. 1 .
Do your research
Do you fully understand what you’re asking and why? 2 . Improve your focus by concentrating on what you don’t get. If your question is too confusing, you won’t get the answer you need. People can’t answer a question well if you don’t make it easy for them.
3
Everyone goes off-topic sometimes, but that’s not always a bad thing. Conversation can go in many different directions before or after your question is answered. You may find that talking makes you think of more questions. Try to relax, and don’t think every question has to be formal.
Put questions in right order
If you’re having a long conversation with lots to cover, put some thoughts into the order of your questions. You might not want to start with sensitive or challenging questions. 4 .
Use the right tone (语气)
5 . Some are serious, while others are light-hearted and fun. It’s important to know when you must have a serious tone and when you can be casual (随意的). Being very formal in every situation can make people uncomfortable and stop them from wanting to share information. If the other person is showing you they’re uncomfortable, respect their space — you’re likely not getting honest answers, anyway.
A.Go where the conversation takes you
B.Use silence to your advantage
C.Make sure you understand what you’re asking
D.You’re curious about what they have to say
E.Here are some tips on how you can ask good questions
F.The questions can have different meanings depending on the tone used
G.Start by asking basic and easy questions before getting into challenging ones
Passage 2
In today’s fast-paced society, time management is important. Everyone tries to learn and work more efficiently within the limited time. 1
Use every moment
When you’re busy, every moment in the day is important. 2 When you’re taking the bus or you’re waiting for a lecture, you can get something done online, like doing some research for an important project and pin some online resources or reading part of the studying material you need to cover for the tests.
Make to-do lists every single day
3 Then, translate that plan into weekly goals and create daily to-do lists that help you achieve them. When you have a plan, you’ll notice it’s easy to find a gap where your favorite TV show fits in. Suddenly, you realize that a 24-hour day gives you more space than you assumed.
Create blocks of courses
What happens when you leave 50 minutes of free time between the courses? You end up having coffee and scrolling on your phone, waiting for the next course. You are wasting valuable time. Try this method: 4 lectures, relaxation, studying and good times. When you know that you’ll be done with lectures soon, your mind will stay focused and excited about the relaxation that follows. 5
If you find yourself struggling with the amount of work you have, turn to your professor immediately for help. American professors have office hours when students can come ask questions and get help. They want you to succeed, so ask for assistance. There are also many campus resources that you can use, such as tutors and the writing center.
A.Get help when needed.
B.Go through all work at once.
C.separate your days into four different blocks:

How to Protect Your Online Security
In today’s digital age, protecting your online security is more important than ever. With the increase in cyber (网络的) threats, it’s crucial to take steps to safeguard your personal information. 1 Follow these tips to enhance your online security and protect your data.
2 One of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect your online accounts is to use strong, unique passwords for each one. Avoid using the same password across multiple sites, and make sure each password is complex and difficult to guess. Avoid using easily guessable information like your name or birthdate. Consider using a password manager to keep track of your passwords securely.
Enable two-factor authentication (双重验证). Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts. 3 This makes it much harder for hackers to gain access to your accounts, even if they have your password.
Be careful about public Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi networks are convenient but can be risky. 4 If you must use public Wi-Fi, consider using a virtual private network(VPN) to encrypt (把……加密) your internet connection and protect your data.
Keep your software up to date. Software updates often include important security patches that fix vulnerabilities. 5 This includes your operating system, web browser, and any app you use regularly.
A.Use strong, unique passwords.

It can provide you with the assistance you need to go through high school successfully. 1 Here are some tips on how to build and maintain your support network.
Identify potential support sources. Take time to recognize individuals who make you feel comfortable and are dependable. 2 In this way, emotional support, guidance and possible solutions can be provided when needed.
Voice your needs when necessary. Everyone is different, and therefore, everyone has different needs. Not everyone knows exactly how to deal with a situation or help a person. So, when your support network doesn’t know exactly how to support you, don’t get discouraged. 3
Be involved in events. Participating in events can provide an excellent opportunity to expand your support network. 4 Working together towards common objectives can create lasting friendships and a support system that understands your challenges.
5 Building a support network is not just about receiving support; it’s also about giving the help back. Be patient when listening and offer help to others in your network. By being a supportive friend, you create a positive environment where people are more likely to provide support to you as well.

Passage 1
Music is a major part of our lives. We meet music almost everywhere, from car rides and homes, to workouts in the gym, or even the movies and TV shows we watch. Most people enjoy listening to music and often state that they can’t live without it. 1 ? Because it provides several health benefits that many are unaware of.
It improves sleep quality. Listening to music has been shown to treat constant wakefulness, especially for college students. 2 . Research has found that listening to music at various times promotes better sleep patterns for people and even creates more restful sleep.
It helps with exercising. Have you ever wondered why there is always music playing in the gym or why people can’t go on runs without their headphones? 3 . It’s also shown that listening to music can increase endurance (耐力).
It decreases stress and anxiety. Are you ever worried or anxious about something and don’t know what to do? 4 , even during highly stressful or painful events.
It may help with memory. When studying or doing the homework, do you ever find yourself moving your head to some music? Research shows that music enjoyment helps with learning and memory.
5 . If you’re feeling down, music may be the perfect cure. Studies show that music helps put people in a better mood and helps them keep in touch with their feelings.
Whether you’ve realized it or not, listening to your favourite songs provides your mind and body with much more than the enjoyment of the songs. So keep on listening!

Passage 2
Digital technology helps people to be more flexible and more productive, and makes it easier to get work done. 1 . Here are some active steps to manage your technology use so the disadvantages don’t override the advantages. 2
Thousands of people are killed each year by distracted (注意力分散的) driving. When you’re in the car, make it a habit: silence your phone and place your phone out of reach while driving.
Guard your nightly rest
3 . Research confirms that nighttime screen use — especially the blue light given off by devices — harms your sleep quality. But it’s not just the light; stimulating (趣味盎然的) content like messages or social media can keep your brain active when it should be relaxing. Also resist using your phone as an alarm clock. For many people, it can be too tempting to have it on the bedside table.
Set clear boundaries (界限)
If you won’t be responding to texts during work hours or checking email on vacation, communicate that frankly. Let your parents know you’ll reply in the evening. 4 . Otherwise, you’ll spend your downtime managing annoyed messages instead of truly relaxing.
Be present in person
Digital technology and social media make it easy to stay in touch, but they can distract you from connecting with the people right in front of you. Technology keeps us connected, but it can also pull us away from the people right in front of us. Those face-to-face interactions matter. Research shows that 44% of frequent phone checkers feel disconnected from their families, even when together. 5 .
A.Try late-night use of your phone
B.Avoid using phones behind the wheel
C.Your phone could be stealing your sleep
D.It has also created new kinds of stress for you, though

Passage 3
As a writer who shares his journey online, I’m often asked how to begin a writing journey. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer, but I do understand the curiosity of starting something new. Here are some tips which I think could help.
Start small.
Keep a journal or notebook for short writing exercises or ideas. These small pieces can serve as practice or inspiration for larger projects later on. 1 You’ll want to look back one day and see how much progress you’ve made and how your initial ideas shaped your current skills and creativity.
Write regularly and from experience.
The more you write, the better you’ll become. Whether it’s fiction, essays, or poetry, draw from your own experiences or observations. Writing consistently builds not only your technical skills but also your confidence in expressing ideas. 2 It is constant writing that often transforms thoughts into something tangible and meaningful.
Challenge yourself to explore new techniques.
3 Maybe experiment with a different narrative style. I once took on a challenge to write flash fiction every day for a month, and it pushed me in unexpected and rewarding ways. By exploring unfamiliar territory, you might discover hidden talents or creative passions you never knew existed.
4
Communicate with other writers as much as possible. In this way I posted my writing online and have connected with some of the most supportive readers. Getting constructive criticism and advice can help you grow while building a community of fellow writers.
Your writing journey won’t be a straight line. 5 Keep writing and stay patient. In time, the dedication will pay off, and you’ll see the rewards of living a writer’s life.
A.Share to get feedback.
B.Support other readers.

The Feynman Technique(费曼学习法)is a powerful method that you can use to learn anything faster because it forces you to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else talk about it. You can take the following five simple steps to study better.
·Find out the topic you want to learn. 1 Otherwise, you'll end up jumping between topics without developing a deeper understanding of any of them.
·Explain the topic as if teaching a sixth-grader. This step is the heart of the FeynmanTechnique— 2 .This requires you to meet the child at their level of understanding by using the simplest way.
.Identify areas of improvement in your explanation. You’ll need to critically(批判性地)review the explanation you came up with in Step Two 3 . Try to find any knowledge gaps, together with any areas where you felt that you couldn't explain the topic simply.
·Improve and optimize(优化) your explanation. Think about all the knowledge gaps and other areas of improvement you found before. 4
· Repeat the steps until you’ve achieved mastery of the topic. Keep going through each step you're fully satisfied with your explanation. 5 , and that is why going through all the prior steps just once is usually not enough to achieve topic mastery.
A.Use those to improve your explanation
B.To do so, take a critical look at your explanation
C.Make sure that your explanation is interest-based
D.Your explanations need to be short and to the point
E.The Feynman Technique works best with a repeat

How to make small talk
Sometimes, people say that small talk is awkward and shallow (肤浅的). 1 , the other person will focus on the more interesting parts of your conversation rather than the small talk itself. There are four tips that’ll help you make small talk in any situation.
·Devices down

·Listen first
In social situations, one way to show you’re offering your full attention is to listen in an engaged (投入的) way. When you’re listening, show you’re paying attention by practicing nonverbal cues (非语言暗示) like nodding and making eye contact with the speaker. 3 . For example, if someone tells you, “Wow, I haven’t seen you in three years,” repeat back, “Three years? Has it been that long?” This shows you’re actively listening.
· 4
When you ask about the person you’re speaking to, ask open-ended questions. For example, “How have things been?” is a better question than “Have you been alright?” The latter requires a simple yes or no response, while the former draws out information in a conversational way.
·Respond enthusiastically
When someone tells you something in a small talk conversation, respond enthusiastically (热情地). Your positivity shows you’re paying attention and also makes them feel valued and respected. 5 .

根据下文“The belief that left-handed people were witches was widespread in medieval Europe, and they could even be killed. In fact, the word “sinister”, meaning harmful or evil, comes from a Latin word for “on the left side.” Even in the 1960s, American children born left-handed were forced to switch hands when writing.(在中世纪的欧洲,‘左撇子是女巫’的观念盛行,他们甚至可能因此被处死。事实上,意为‘有害的’或 ‘邪恶的’英文单词“sinister”,就源自拉丁语中表示‘左侧’的词汇。直到20世纪60年代,美国仍有左撇子儿童在写字时被强制改用右手。)”可知,本段围绕左撇子曾被视为邪恶展开,如中世纪被迫害、20世纪被强制改手等。选项D“Being left-handed hasn’t always been accepted(左撇子并非一直被社会接纳。)”
3.上文“But one University of Oxford study suggests that, in the brains of left-handed people, the two parts are better connected. (但牛津大学的一项研究表明,左撇子的大脑左右半球连接更为紧密。)”提到牛津大学研究指出左撇子大脑两部分连接更好。选项G“Also, studies say that lefties may have an advantage in language learning(研究还称,左撇子可能在语言学习方面具有优势。)”
4.前文“According to a 2013 Yale University study, lefties seem more likely to suffer from schizophrenia (精神分裂症).(耶鲁大学2013年的一项研究显示,左撇子患精神分裂症的可能性更高。)” F“This serious disorder can cause people to hear voices or see things that are not real(这种严重的疾病可能导致患者出现幻听或幻觉。)”
5.空前“One area where lefties may have the upper hand is in sports that require quick reaction times.(左撇子可能占据优势的领域是需要快速反应的运动。)” 而下文“Ding Ning, for example, is a left-handed table tennis champion with three Olympic gold medals.(例如,左撇子乒乓球冠军丁宁就曾三次斩获奥运金牌。)” E“This includes sports like baseball and table tennis(这包括棒球和乒乓球等运动。)”

4
In China, this festival is in late January or early February, the last day of the Lunar year. People celebrate it by having a family reunion dinner, setting off fireworks and staying up late. 2.根据后文“The Chinese character of September is the same as 9, so we get this special name.(九月的汉字与数字九相同,所以我们得到了这个特殊的名字)”可知,这里解释了重阳节名字的来历,因为有两个“九”,G项“It is celebrated on Sept. 9th of the Lunar Calendar, around October.(它在农历的九月初九庆祝,大约在公历10月)”指明重阳节的时间,引出后文名字的来历。故选G。
3.后文“In the northern region, people eat dumplings and wonton(馄饨), while in the southern region rice balls.(在北方地区,人们吃饺子和馄饨,而在南方地区,人们吃汤圆)”指明南北方在冬至时饮食的差异,是对E项“That day people in different regions eat different food.(那天,不同地区的人吃的食物不同)”的具体说明。故选E。

For many people, it can be too tempting to have it on the bedside table.
Set clear boundaries (界限)

C.A straight-line thing is often favored by fiction writers.
D.Stepping out of your comfort zone is essential for growth.
E.You’ll face challenges, and sometimes you’ll doubt yourself.
F.Don’t throw away your early writings, even if they seem rough.
G.Just like a muscle, writing skills grow stronger with frequent use.

G.Each day, write down three things about yourself that make you happy.
【答案】1.F 2.C 3.G 4.E 5.A
1.前文说“How we feel about ourselves can influence how we live our lives.(我们对自己的感觉会影响我们生活的方式。)” 而F项“People with good self-esteem have better relationships.(自尊心强的人人际关系更好。)”
2.上文“Having good self-esteem(自尊心)allows you to accept yourself and live life to the fullest.(拥有良好的自尊可以让你接受自己,并充分地享受生活。)”
3.该段中心句是“Try to stop thinking negative thoughts about yourself.(试着停止对自己的消极想法。)”
5.设空处为本段主旨句,后文“Tutor a classmate who's having trouble, help clean up your neighborhood, or volunteer your time in some other way.(辅导有困难的同学,帮助打扫邻里,或以其他方式贡献你的时间。)” 故选A项。
