COFFEE PODS (咖啡荚)
On average, Australians are using more than three million coffee pods per day, and about 1.5 million households have coffee machines. While the pods are disastrous for the environment, they can still be recycled. Nespresso has a free post-back programme and drop-off points run by TerraCycle, so you can take the pods and directly drop off at Nespresso stores.
LIGHT BULBS
Rather than throwing light bulbs into the bin, some councils run specific recycling stations, which allow you to drop off these kinds of items. If you do regularly recycle household glass, remember all glass should be washed and have lids removed.
PIZZA BOXES
Normally pizza boxes don’t make it into recycling because they’re covered in grease (油脂) and leftover bits of cheese. When a pizza box is too greasy, it won’t be taken to a recycling processing plant. If possible, remove as much of the leftovers as you can before recycling. If the pizza box can’t be recycled, tear off the lid which can still be recycled.
HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES
Household batteries can also be recycled. Batteries that do end up in landfills can cause a serious problem to the environment as they can release poisonous chemicals into the soil which are harmful to both humans and animals. Button-cell batteries, which are used in hearing aids and watches, can also be recycled.
21.Why does TerraCycle run the free post-back programme and drop-off points?
A.To recycle coffee pods easily. B.To offer good coffee for free.
C.To exchange coffee machines. D.To warn people of the harm of coffee.
22.What do people need to do first to recycle pizza boxes?
A.Wash them many times. B.Take them to the government.
C.Clear the leftovers as much as possible. D.Return boxes to the pizza shop quickly.
23.In which section of a magazine can we read the text?
A.Health. B.Environment. C.Entertainment. D.Culture.

You shouldn’t need a PowerPoint presentation to explain why getting a cat is a great idea, but Shana, a little girl, wasn’t taking any chances. She really, really wanted her parents to adopt a kitty, and she was willing to go to great lengths to convince them! So, she put together a very professional and educational slideshow (幻灯片) with all the related facts. Her arguments were pretty solid!
For example, Shana explained that she wasn’t the only one in the family who would benefit from getting a kitty. All her brothers and sisters wanted one, too! Another point was her claim that “It would be so cute, please.” Additionally, she reminded her parents that they still owed her one. “Please, seriously you promised me a hamster (仓鼠) five years ago but that never happened, just let me have this,” the child wrote. She also noted that pets can help relieve stress, which was a crucially persuasive point.
Throughout the PowerPoint, the little girl made several promises to take full responsibility for the cat’s health and well-being. She assured her parents that she had done her homework on animal care, and she understood what she was signing up for.
Dad Christopher Doyle thought that his daughter’s PowerPoint on adopting a cat was pretty clever. In fact, he thought that the little girl’s determination was so cute, he just had to post her presentation on social media.
Would this PowerPoint be enough to earn the girl a cat? In case you’re wondering, it worked! Dad shared in a later post that the family was filling out adoption paperwork in order to bring home a kitty. Of course, this was bound to happen. After all, who could refuse such a well-researched PowerPoint? The family ended up adopting a rescue kitty, whom the kids named Oliver.
24.What do the underlined words “go to great lengths” mean in paragraph 1?
A.Spare no effort. B.Go to extremes.
C.Waste a lot of time. D.Change her mind.
25.Which is the key point used by Shana to persuade her parents?
A.She has learned enough about animal care.
B.All the family members are dying for a cat.
C.Raising pets like cats helps reduce pressure.
D.Her parents did owe her one pet in the past.
26.How did Doyle feel about his daughter’s slideshow?
A.Awkward. B.Appreciative. C.Surprised. D.Curious.
27.What can we learn from Shana’s story?
A.Perseverance changed parents’ minds. B.Creative solutions help to settle problems.
C.Parents should keep promises to kids. D.A road to success is full of ups and downs.

In the crystal-clear waters near Talamone, Italy, an extraordinary sight awaits beneath the Mediterranean Sea’s surface. Mermaids, towering giants and enormous sculptural eyes gaze upward from the ocean floor, creating an otherworldly underwater gallery that serves a crucial environmental purpose. This unique initiative represents one innovative fisherman’s determined effort to protect vital fishing grounds from the disastrous impact of commercial fishing nets that threaten marine ecosystems.
The underwater sculpture garden operates on a simple yet effective principle that strategically placed artistic installations (安装工程) work alongside concrete blocks to physically obstruct and break the fishing nets that destroy marine life. These massive fishing nets, dragged across the seafloor by commercial vessels, destroy delicate underwater habitats and deplete fish populations that local fishing communities depend upon for their livelihood.
The project has evolved beyond its initial conservation goals to become a cooperative effort involving local educational institutions and young artists. Students from a high school in nearby Grosseto have actively participated in the initiative, creating specialized sculptural works designed to serve two purposes. These student-crafted pieces not only contribute to the anti-fishing barrier system but also provide alternative habitats for marine creatures. By offering the marine species a safe shelter within the sculptural installations, the project helps reduce their vulnerability to illegal fishing practices while supporting natural population recovery.
The fisherman behind the initiative recognized that traditional regulatory approaches alone were not enough to fulfill the environmental commitment. And the sculptures themselves have captured international attention while serving practical conservation purposes. Each piece sunk to the Mediterranean floor contributes to a growing underwater museum that tells the story of local efforts to preserve marine biodiversity.
As the sculpture garden continues to expand, it serves as an inspiring example of how art and environmental protection can work together to create lasting positive change in marine ecosystems.
28.What is the purpose of the underwater sculptures?
A.To protect underwater ecosystems. B.To promote local fishing industry.
C.To raise environmental awareness. D.To create an attractive artistic gallery.
29.What does the underlined word “deplete” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Carefully manage. B.Gradually relocate.
C.Significantly reduce. D.Successfully protect.
30.What can we learn about the project in paragraph 3?
A.The project calls for more support from students and artists.
B.The project has expanded into a community-based initiative.
C.The sculptures have managed to stop practices of illegal fishing.
D.The sculptures show superior artistic skills of the young participants.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Art in the depths: A New Fashion in Italy
B.Sculpting a Shield: Art Meets Conservation
C.From Gallery to Fishery: The Power of Students
D.Guarding the Deep: Traditional Ways of Protection
D
For too long, we have held a narrow and biased view of nature, seeing it as something separate from our urban lives — something to be visited in natural parks or distant wilderness. We pass by the moss in a crack or the algae in a gutter (水沟) with indifference, even disgust. However, cities are not empty of life but are unique, lively ecosystems, and recognizing this should allow us to redefine what it means to be a naturalist in the modern world.
Within ordinary urban landscapes, life displays extraordinary toughness and creativity. Plants and microorganisms not only survive but grow well in the heat and pollution of city gutters. Urban animals have also developed smart behaviors: Japanese crows use cars to crack nuts, and Australian cockatoos open trash bins for food. Furthermore, cities drive physical changes in their residents. Some lizards have developed stickier feet to better hold on smooth man-made surfaces. This concrete “jungle” is thus not a biological desert but a dynamic, human-made ecosystem, representing a fascinating new chapter in the story of life on our planet.
Therefore, the old image of a naturalist — a professional in remote wilds — is outdated. Academic papers and online courses make biology and ecology procurable to everyone. Community labs and nature clubs enable ordinary people to do research with microscopes and other simple tools. When we accept the city as a real ecosystem, we allow everyone to become a “community scientist”.
For those feeling disconnected from nature in cities, there’s a new way: just stay curious and notice the ignored ecological corners, and city life may be filled with new surprises and joys. You don’t need to be a professional scientist — anyone can be a naturalist-explorer in the urban wilderness.
32.What phenomenon does the author point out in Paragraph 1?
A.Naturalists need professional training. B.City residents overlook nearby nature.
C.People favor wilderness over urban life. D.Ecologists redefine biased nature concepts.
33.How does the author show cities are lively ecosystems?
A.By criticizing current opinions. B.By suggesting new research findings.
C.By giving examples of organism adaptation. D.By comparing biodiversity from different habitats.
34.What does the underlined word “procurable” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Suitable. B.Comfortable. C.Reasonable. D.Accessible.
35.What idea does the author aim to challenge in the passage?
A.Naturalists are limited to professionals.
B.Evolution mainly exists in wild nature.
C.Urbanization damages the environment.
D.City holds a distinct and dynamic ecology.

Does your cat or dog suddenly get a burst of energy and perform athletic features around the house? Welcome to the world of zoomies — tense periods of high-energy activity including running, jumping and rolling.
You might see post-bath zoomies, midnight zoomies and out-of-nowhere zoomies. We don’t yet know if zoomies are more likely to occur at certain times of the day, or more in some than others. 36 If the zoomies are occurring as part of your animal’s daily routine, this implies your animal is enjoying themselves. Actually, zoomies have a lot in common with play. 37
Zoomies are mentioned a lot, but there is little scientific research why they occur. Yet some conclusions can be drawn from experience. 38 In dogs, this is commonly a play bow-where the dog appears to “bow” to another to signal it is eager to play. In cats, an invitation may include repeatedly rolling over. If this is the case, your animal is likely experiencing excitement and a desire to interact with you.
39 You should consult with your vet (兽医) if your dog or cat is displaying the behavior (in particular, circling) for too long. It might be a sign of a repetitive behavior disorder. If you struggle to distract or stop the behavior, or if it is resulting in injuries, seek professional assistance.
Even if you don’t get the call of the zoomies yourself, take a moment to enjoy and even join your dog or cat in having fun. 40
A.Sometimes we all need to run wild.
B.You can easily tell they bring a whole load of fun.
C.It is our duty to figure out what they want exactly.
D.Nothing is more annoying than a midnight zoomie.
E.However, we do consider them evidence of a pretty good mood.
F.For example, zoomies can be seen as an invitation for others to join.
G.Sometimes, however, zoomies may be a sign of a medical condition.

Deep in the misty mountains of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, the annual encounter count of 185 giant pandas in field monitoring signals a great success in the country’s drive 56 (establish) the world’s largest national park system.
The 3rd National Park Forum held in the provincial capital Chengdu revealed that sightings have risen from the previous count of 178, 57 (mark) a remarkable turnaround for a species once considered globally endangered.
China is 58 (systematic) placing more than one-tenth of its land mass under strict protection through its expanding network of national parks.
“China’s commitment 59 building a national park system is unshakable. It is building the world’s largest national park system, which evolved from pilot programs 60 (conduct) in 2015 to the establishment of its first five national parks in 2021,” said Lyu Zhongmei, a spokesperson at the forum. “Technology is a cornerstone of this increase in 61 (conserve).”
Li Deren, an expert from Wuhan University, emphasized the importance of critical remote monitoring innovations. “Space-air-ground (SAG)-based remote sensing has become essential support for sustainable park management, particularly in areas 62 problems like power cuts, communication disruptions, and inaccessible roads are common.”
Besides monitoring giant pandas, high-tech methods 63 (adopt) in national parks across China so far: real-time SAG monitoring to track rare Siberian tigers 64 Amur leopards (豹子) in the northeast; smart management platforms in the southeastern forests to prevent fire risks.
Equally notable is 65 important role that technology is playing in reducing human-wildlife conflicts. An advanced warning system sends 24-hour warnings to communities near tiger habitats and passes information directly to frontline workers when large predators come near.

Every evening, after a long day’s work at the university, Professor Parker would walk out of the train station, and a golden Akita dog would be waiting for him there. The dog was Hachi, his loyal companion. They met by accident — Parker found the lost puppy at the station and took him home, and from then on, they were never apart. Hachi would see Parker off at the station every morning and greet him at the same spot every evening, rain or shine. The whole town knew their warm bond. Children would stop to pet Hachi, commuters would smile at their daily ritual, and the station master always saved a treat for the faithful dog.
One morning, Parker felt unwell but still went to work. He patted Hachi’s head and said, “Wait for me, boy.” Hachi seemed to sense something wrong — he barked loudly and refused to let Parker leave, even running in front of his bike. The dog’s unusual behavior alarmed several neighbors who witnessed the scene. But Parker left anyway, glancing back to see Hachi standing at the gate, whining (呜咽) softly. That afternoon, Parker suddenly fell down in the classroom while lecturing about agricultural economics. Despite immediate medical attention, he never regained consciousness, leaving behind a grieving family and a loyal friend who knew nothing of his fate.
The train pulled into the station as usual that evening. Hachi sat at their usual spot, his tail wagging gently, waiting for his master. The golden fur on his neck stood on end in anticipation as each passenger emerged from the train doors. Passengers walked by, some patting his head with pity, others whispering about the professor’s sudden passing. The station keeper said, “He’s not coming back, boy.” But Hachi didn’t move. As the sky turned dark and the platform emptied, he lay there, his eyes fixed on the train tracks, occasionally lifting his head at the sound of approaching footsteps, only to lower it again in disappointment.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Days turned into weeks and months, and Hachi came to the station every single day.

W: People are increasingly concerned about online security. And many experts are now offering advice on how to use smartphones safely.
M: What advice?
W: Let me ask you first: How long have you kept your phone on so far?
M: For over a year now. It’s not that I’m addicted to it, or have important calls, but I need the alarm to wake me up every morning.
W: Yeah, but that’s where the risk is. According to experts, we should switch our phones off and on once a day as a security measure. It helps close the applications running in the background and stop data collection processes we’re not aware of.
M: Sounds reasonable. Do we switch the phone off and switch it back on immediately?
W: Well, better wait for a few minutes.
M: When do you usually do that?
W: I do it every night before going to bed.

W: Hello, everybody. Thanks for your consistent support for our weekly meeting, New Books Sharing. Today, we’ve invited Dr. Caspar Melville, a lecturer from the University of London. Dr. Melville started out as a music journalist for a black music magazine called Blues and Soul. In 1992, he moved to San Francisco, and founded a jazz magazine named On the One with some friends. They did a really good job, though there was not a lot of money in it. In 1997, he moved back to London and started teaching, and made the decision to find another way to write about music. He grew up in London. He feels that the music in London clubs has formed him, but unfortunately, it has been seriously undervalued by the academic world. In black music studies, jazz has received great attention, but dance music has been largely ignored. His book, It’s a London Thing, is meant to change that situation. So let’s welcome Dr. Melville to share with us his ideas in the book.
When it comes to recycling the household waste, people have done it for about two decades. However, there’s still some confusion about what can and what can’t be recycled. With advances in technology, there are more things that can be recycled.
A
COFFEE PODS (咖啡荚)

【答案】24.A 25.C 26.B 27.B
根据第一段“She really, really wanted her parents to adopt a kitty, and she was willing to go to great lengths to convince them! So, she put together a very professional and educational slideshow with all the related facts.(她非常非常想让父母收养一只小猫,并且愿意go to great lengths说服他们!于是,她制作了一个非常专业、有教育意义的幻灯片,列出了所有相关事实。)”可知,小女孩为了养猫认真准备了PPT,由此可推断“go to great lengths”意为“不遗余力、竭尽全力”。故选A。
根据第二段“She also noted that pets can help relieve stress, which was a crucially persuasive point.(她还指出,宠物有助于缓解压力,这是一个至关重要的有说服力的观点。)”
根据第四段“Dad Christopher Doyle thought that his daughter’s PowerPoint on adopting a cat was pretty clever.(爸爸克里斯托弗·多伊尔认为女儿关于收养猫咪的PPT非常聪明巧妙。)”

【答案】28.A 29.C 30.B 31.B
根据第一段“This unique initiative represents one innovative fisherman’s determined effort to protect vital fishing grounds from the disastrous impact of commercial fishing nets that threaten marine ecosystems. (这一独特的举措代表了一位创新渔民保护重要渔场免受威胁海洋生态系统的商业捕鱼网灾难性影响的坚定努力。)”以及第二段“The underwater sculpture garden operates on a simple yet effective principle that strategically placed artistic installations (安装工程) work alongside concrete blocks to physically obstruct and break the fishing nets that destroy marine life. (水下雕塑花园遵循一个简单而有效的原则,即战略性地放置艺术装置与混凝土块一起,从物理上阻挡和破坏破坏海洋生物的渔网。)”可知,水下雕塑的目的是保护水下生态系统。故选A项。
根据第二段“These massive fishing nets, dragged across the seafloor by commercial vessels, destroy delicate underwater habitats and deplete fish populations that local fishing communities depend upon for their livelihood. (这些巨大的渔网被商船拖过海底,破坏了脆弱的水下栖息地,并使当地渔业社区赖以生存的鱼类数量____。)”可知,渔网对鱼类数量造成的影响是负面的,结合选项可知,应该是“使鱼类数量减少”,所以deplete意思是“显著减少”。故选C项。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段“The project has evolved beyond its initial conservation goals to become a cooperative effort involving local educational institutions and young artists. Students from a high school in nearby Grosseto have actively participated in the initiative, creating specialized sculptural works designed to serve two purposes. (该项目已经超越了最初的保护目标,发展成为一项涉及当地教育机构和年轻艺术家的合作努力。附近格罗塞托一所高中的学生积极参与了这项倡议,创作了具有两种用途的专门雕塑作品。)”可知,该项目已经发展成为一个社区性的倡议,涉及到当地的教育机构和年轻艺术家。故选B项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“As the sculpture garden continues to expand, it serves as an inspiring example of how art and environmental protection can work together to create lasting positive change in marine ecosystems. (随着雕塑花园的不断扩大,它成为艺术与环境保护如何共同努力,为海洋生态系统带来持久积极变化的一个鼓舞人心的例子。)”可知,文章主要讲述了水下雕塑花园如何将艺术与海洋保护相结合,所以B项“Sculpting a Shield: Art Meets Conservation (塑造盾牌:艺术与保护相遇)”是最佳标题。故选B项。
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.D 35.A
根据第一段中“For too long, we have held a narrow and biased view of nature, seeing it as something separate from our urban lives — something to be visited in natural parks or distant wilderness. We pass by the moss in a crack or the algae in a gutter (水沟) with indifference, even disgust. (长期以来,我们对自然持有狭隘且有偏见的看法,将其视为与我们城市生活分离的东西——是在自然公园或遥远荒野中才能看到的东西。我们对裂缝中的苔藓或水沟里的藻类漠不关心,甚至厌恶)”可知,作者在第一段指出的现象是城市居民将自然视为与城市生活分离的东西,忽视身边的大自然。故选B项。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Plants and microorganisms not only survive but grow well in the heat and pollution of city gutters.

Trees are important to us
As we all know, trees are of great benefit to man. Not only can they provide us with wood and other products, they can also refresh the air and beautify our surroundings. Furthermore, they help us prevent droughts and floods.
Unfortunately, people haven’t realized the importance of trees. With the development of the society, more and more trees are needed and cut down, which turns more and more fields into desert. Desertification becomes a growing world problem and the earth is unsuitable for us to live on.
In order to solve these problems, we should take some steps/measures to protect trees and to plant more ones. Everyone of us ought to have an awareness of the importance of trees and take part in the work of protecting trees.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Days turned into weeks and months, and Hachi came to the station every single day. No matter how harsh the weather was, he never missed the evening train. Passengers who once smiled at their warm reunion now felt a pang of sorrow, bringing him food and water. The station master left a warm blanket for him on cold evenings. Hachi didn’t care about the kindness or the pity; all he did was wait, his tail still wagging slowly every time the train pulled in, stubbornly believing his master would step off the train and call his name softly, just like he always did.
Years later, the old Hachi lay weakly at the same spot, too tired to stand up. His once-bright eyes had grown clouded with age, his golden fur now thin and dull, but he still fixed his gaze on the station entrance, waiting for his master. When the evening train arrived, Hachi wagged his thin tail weakly for the last time, as if he saw Parker walk to him and reach out to pat his head gently. He closed his eyes peacefully with a soft sigh. Later, the town built a statue of Hachi at the station to memorize the most loyal friend that touched everyone’s heart.

A
COFFEE PODS (咖啡荚)
