Lesson Plan 2: Reading
Textbook Reference: 7B Unit 8, Pages 94-95
I. Teaching Objectives
Language Ability: Understand the main content and structure of the excerpt from Alice in Wonderland; master key words and phrases; analyze the narrative sequence and writing features of the fantasy story.
Cultural Awareness: Learn about the background of Alice in Wonderland and its status in world children's literature; experience the charm of fantasy literature, and cultivate the ability to appreciate literary works.
Thinking Quality: Infer Alice’s emotional changes through the details in the story; analyze the causes and development of events in the plot; imagine the follow-up of the story and develop creative thinking.
Learning Ability: Use reading strategies such as skimming, scanning and deep reading to extract key information; participate in group discussions to express personal views on the story; improve the ability to understand and analyze fantasy narratives.
II. Key & Difficult Points
Key: Understand the main plot and key details of Alice’s adventure in the rabbit hole; master the key words, phrases and sentence structures in the text; grasp the narrative sequence of the story.
Difficult: Infer Alice’s emotional changes from the text; understand the artistic characteristics of fantasy stories (exaggeration, imagination); predict the follow-up plot of the story.
III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Pre-reading
Activity : Review & Lead-in
Review the fantasy stories discussed in the previous lesson. Ask students:
1 “Have you heard of Alice in Wonderland?”
2 “What do you think Alice might encounter in the story?”
Step 2: While-reading
1. Skimming
Ask students to read the story quickly and answer:
1 What is the main idea of the story?
2 How does the story show fantasy elements?
2. Scanning
Draw a time outline and let studentsto finish it.

One sunny day
Alice sits by a river with her sister; sees a white rabbit passing by.
After the rabbit speaks
Alice runs across the field after the rabbit.
Then
The rabbit jumps down a big hole; Alice jumps down too.
After falling for a long time
Alice hits the ground; finds herself in a long, low hall.
Later
Alice sees a small key on a table; uses it to open a small door.
Finally
Alice tries to go through the door but is too big.
3. Deep Reading
Ask students to read the story again and discuss the question:
How do you think Alice felt when she was falling down the hole? (Curious, excited, a little scared.)
Step 3: Post-reading
Activity: Group Discussion
Divide students into groups of 4. Discuss the following questions and prepare a 1-minute group report:
1 What do you think of Alice’s adventure? Why is it a fantasy story?
2 If you were Alice, what would you do when you found yourself in the hall?
3 What do you think will happen to Alice next?
Step 4: Summary & Homework
Summary:
Review the main content of the story, key words/phrases and the narrative sequence; emphasize the artistic charm of fantasy stories, which can stimulate people’s imagination and bring joy.
Homework:
Recite the key words and phrases of this lesson.
Think about the follow-up plot of the story and write down 2 possible developments.
