A Mystery Artist
The first time I saw Suzy Khan, I knew I had to help her. All I knew was that she was an orphan, who had no parents, from Africa. She had just been adopted by a family, and they thought that the best way for her to learn American ways of life is to be with American kids.
Suzy was really small for her age of 12. The boys in my class often laughed at her. She would open a book, pretending to read, with tears dropping on the open page. I looked down at this small girl and promised myself that I must help her.
But how could I help her fit in with us? There had to be a way.
One day, when I went into the classroom, I saw that Suzy had opened her geography book to a picture of a train, and in her notebook, she had made a perfect copy.
I was surprised and thought that she could do something in the coming talent show. So, I took her to see the art teacher, Miss Parker, and showed her what Suzy had drawn. “Why, it’s wonderful,” said Miss Parker, and then showed us a poster she had painted for the talent show. “I need more of these, but I just don’t have enough time. Could you help me, Suzy?”
On the day of the talent show, Suzy’s posters were everywhere—all over the hall and all over the school, each one different.
“And finally,” said Mr. Brown, the schoolmaster, at the end of the show, “We have a special award. I’m sure you’ve all noticed the wonderful posters.” Everyone nodded. “One of our own students painted them.”
I could hear everyone whispering. “Who in our school could draw that well?”
Mr. Brown waited for a while before saying, “Since this student worked so hard on the posters, she deserves a prize, too. Our mystery artist is our new student—Suzy Khan!”
Mr. Brown thanked her for all the wonderful posters and gave her a professional artist’s set. “Thank you,” she cried. I realized, at that time when I was looking at her excited face, she had probably never owned anything in her whole life.
Everyone started to clap their hands. Suzy Khan gave them a shy smile. I knew then Suzy was going to be all right.

If you travel by plane in Thailand, you might see some artistic pictures showing lovely cartoon cats from the air. The photo above is one of them. It was taken in December of 2023. In the photo, you can see a cute sleeping cat with a fish.
You must wonder how the pictures came into being. Well, rice farmer Tanyapong Jaikham created them with the help of a team of workers. It was not easy. Tanyapong said, “To make the art, we used a great number of different kinds of seedlings (秧苗) with leaves of different colors. Then we planted them in the right places using GPS coordinates (坐标). Over time, the seedlings grew and the pictures appeared.”
Tanyapong hopes that the art can help attract (吸引) more tourists and cat lovers to visit the place. “We are expecting tens of thousands to come and see the art in the rice fields,” said Tanyapong.
The artistic pictures not only celebrate the beauty of nature, but also show a Thai saying, “There are fish in the water and rice in the fields.”
27.Why does the writer mention (提到) the photo in the first paragraph?
A.To describe how much cats love fish.
B.To show readers how cute cats can be.
C.To give an example of the artistic pictures.
D.To advise readers to watch cartoons about cats.
28.What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A.How Tanyapong created the pictures. B.When Tanyapong created the pictures.
C.Where Tanyapong created the pictures. D.Why Tanyapong created the pictures.
29.Which of the following words can best describe Tanyapong?
A.Friendly. B.Serious. C.Creative. D.Successful.

We use our smartphones to carry out many tasks every day. Many of us have become so reliant on them. However, it is bad for our eyes and health to use phones too much.
A study shows that smartphone owners usually start to use their phones early in the morning. They check personal emails and Wechat. And before they get out of bed, many people often check the weather, read the news, and send a message or two to friends. After getting up, they often take photos of food, themselves, and even whatever they can see with their phones. They share their photos with their friends. The research finds that users pick up their phones more than 1,500 times to do different tasks in an average (通常的) week. And the smartphone users are on their phone for three hours and sixteen minutes a day. That is to say, people use their phones for almost one full day each week.
Using phones will take much time and it’s also bad for our health. Many people stay up late to play phones, and mobile phones will influence our sleep. Without using the phones, many people will feel sad. Many owners also find they use their phones without realizing they’re doing so.
How do you think people use their phones too much?

More and more young Chinese travelers are choosing a new style of vacation called “slow travel”. Instead of rushing to see famous landmarks, they want to experience local life closely.
They prefer meaningful experiences, like living like a local for a few days. A report shows that over half of young people in China prefer this style. They also like to travel independently (独立地) and explore special, less-crowded places.
My trip to Quanzhou was different. I didn’t rush between hot places. Instead, I walked into narrow alleys (狭窄的小巷), and enjoyed nanyin—one of China’s oldest musical forms. I just wanted to see how the locals live. That everyday feeling was much more interesting to me than taking photos at popular places.
For me, the most memorable part of my trip to Sanya wasn’t a famous landmark. It was the simple feeling of walking along the beach at sunrise, feeling the seawater wash over my feet. Sometimes, I would just sit on the sand, doing nothing but clearing my mind. Those quiet moments were the most special.
Some young travelers are taking it a step further with “volunteer tourism (义工旅行)”. They join local projects to help the community while they travel. For example, in Guizhou, groups of young travelers formed “cultural recording teams”. They helped elderly villagers write down their life stories, recorded traditional sewing (缝纫) skills, and even helped locals set up small online museums. This allows them to lose themselves deeply and give something back.
34.What is “slow travel” like according to the passage?
35.How did Yan Ting spend her time in Quanzhou?
36.Which is more memorable to Wang Zixuan, rushing to famous landmarks or enjoying herself on the beach?
37.Would you like to try volunteer tourism? Why or why not? More than 30 words.

【知识点】used to do sth.、动词短语、be used to do sth.
was used to drive被用来驾驶;got used to drive表述错误;used to drive过去开车;used to driving表述错误。根据“but now he walks to work every day because he...”
2.What is the best way ________ out the math problem?
A.work B.working C.to work D.to working
分析句子结构可知,此处应用非谓语动词,根据“What is the best way…out the math problem?”
3.The Internet is so closely connected with our daily life. Can you ________ the life without it?
A.imagine B.expect C.understand D.control
【答案】A
【知识点】动词辨析、understand(understood understood)、imagine、expect、control
根据“Can you...the life without it?”
4.— What’s your ________ about the new teacher?
— Oh, he’s nice and teaches well. We all enjoy his classes.
A.discussion B.decision C.opinion D.promise
根据“he’s nice and teaches well.”
5.Peter can speak Chinese very well because he ______ Lianyungang for 5 years.
A.has gone to B.has been to C.has come to D.has been in
【答案】D
【知识点】come(came come)、have been to(或in)/have gone to区别
has gone to去了某地还未回来;has been to曾经去过某地(已经回来);has come to已经来到;has been in待在某地。
6.My grandma told me an interesting ________ before I went to sleep.
A.novel B.tale C.book D.poem
根据“before I went to sleep”的语境,奶奶睡前最可能讲的是短篇故事(tale)。
7.—I’d like you to tell me something about Taiwan.
—Sure, I ________ there three times.
A.had been B.have been C.have gone D.has gone
【答案】B
【知识点】have been to(或in)/have gone to区别
8.—Look! My mother ________ a new dress for me.
—Wow, it looks very nice on you.
A.is making B.has made C.will make D.made
9.Seeing their teacher________ into the classroom, they stopped ________ at once.
A.walk; talking B.enter; to speak C.enter; speaking D.walk; to talk
【答案】A
【知识点】enter、see sb. do sth.、stop doing (sth.)、walk into、动词短语、动词辨析
故选A。
10.Everyone in my class except Tom and Mary ________ to Beijing.
A.have been B.have gone C.has been D.went
【答案】C
【知识点】have been to(或in)/have gone to区别、except/but/besides
have been 去过;have gone 去了;has been 去过;went 一般过去时。 AB。have/has been to 意为“去过”。故选C。
11.It is impolite_________ people in some places.
A.look at B.looking at C.looks at D.to look at
12.We must________an idea to stop people from looking down at their mobile phones while driving cars.
A.come true B.come from C.come out D.come up with
【答案】D
【知识点】come from、come out、come true、come up with、动词短语
come true成事实,实现;come from来自;come out出来,出现,出版;come up with想出,提出。

36.Enjoying herself on the beach is more memorable.
37.Yes, I’d love to. Because volunteer tourism lets me help others and experience local life deeply. I can learn about traditional culture and give something back to the community. It’s really meaningful.

Second, it’s necessary to communicate with others, such as our parents, teachers or friends. They can give us useful advice and make us feel better. Third, we need to learn to relax ourselves. Listening to soft music or watching a funny movie is a good choice. Besides, we should be brave enough to face our difficulties instead of hiding from them.
