The Beatles learned how to be Beatles together. From 1963 to 1970, the group’s four members experienced an entirely new kind of fame, while leaning on ____1____ to get through it. After ____2____ (split) up, they faced another challenge: how to be an ex-Beatle? This one had to be confronted alone. The heaviest burdens of expectation fell on the group’s main song writers, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, both of ____3____ leaned on their wives. As John and Yoko Ono pursued political campaigns, Paul and Linda McCartney retreated to their ruinous Scottish farm.
McCartney longed to play before audiences again, which he hadn’t ____4____ the Beatles stopped touring in 1966. But he couldn’t face doing it solo. So he asked Linda to help him put together a new group. This authorised, illustrated oral history, edited by cultural historian Ted Widmer, tells the story of one of the most successful bands of the 1970s — and one of the strangest.
The first Wings album, Wild Life, ____5____ (release) in 1971, was almost deliberately half-baked, and arrived to a round of ridicule. McCartney packed the other members of Wings into a van, and ____6____ (set) off on a tour of British universities. He ____7____ look at the map, identify the nearest university and ask the social secretary if they fancied a gig that evening. The new group played a set of rock’n’roll covers, new Wings songs and no Beatles tunes. He wanted Wings to make its mistakes away from the hostile gaze of critics, conscious, in particular, ____8____ they would give his wife no quarter.
McCartney, a weirder artist than his reputation suggested, was a self-willed decision-maker. His group’s first two singles were a protest song and a kids’ song. In cultural memory, Wings are overshadowed by the Beatles, masking just how popular they were. Wings had more US No 1s than anyone ____9____ the Bee Gees (比吉斯乐队). We can now appreciate how many of their songs are, to use the technical term, bangers: Band on the Run, Jet, Let’ Em In, Live and Let Die.
Wings blended imperial rock grandeur with a homemade spirit and an easy-going coolness. Wings was bound ____10____ (spin) off from the Beatles universe — but what a spin-off it was.

Distant Diplomacy
When danger approaches, many creatures seem to follow the ancient proverb that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Researchers have recently been finding subtle ways that animals communicate with other species in this kind of ____11____ defense treaty.
For example, Nature Ecology & Evolution carries a recent study ____12____ more than 20 bird species on four continents that emit virtually identical “whining (哀鸣)” calls when they spot brood parasites (寄生繁殖) such as cuckoos. “That call is ____13____ the word for ‘cuckoo,’” says study co-lead author James Kennerley at Cornell University. “And it’s recruiting individuals to come together against this common enemy.”
Brood parasites lay eggs in other birds’ nests, manipulating the ____14____ parents into raising their chicks for them. At a field site in Australia, Kennerley has witnessed individuals from a dozen or more species attack a cuckoo in response to whining calls in ____15____. These mobs can be so aggressive that Kennerley needs to cage the specimen used in their experiments to protect it. Otherwise the attacking birds would have “just completely torn it to pieces,” Kennerley says.
Many birds also share a common ____16____ for predators. Research by wildlife ecologist Erick Greene shows that various songbirds produce ____17____ “seet” calls to warn of a raptor (猛禽) in flight. The calls are too high-pitched for raptors to hear well, so the predators remain unaware as information about their arrival ____18____ through the forest. If the raptor settles, songbirds switch to “mobbing” calls, a distinct sound that, as Greene puts it, “draws in the troops to drive that raptor off.”
Defense is not the only reason for cross-species communication. Among other things, it may help birds migrate and ____19____ food intake. A recent study found that when seabirds with good vision search for food with seabirds with strong senses of smell, they both have far greater success at catching krill. Unlike with the seet and whining calls, however, it’s unclear whether they’re deliberately signaling to one another or “just _____20_____ following other birds,” says study lead author Jesse Granger, a biophysicist at Duke University.
But clearly, “very complex multispecies communication networks are pervasive,” Greene says. “It really benefits animals to pay attention to one another.”
【答案】11. C 12. D 13. F 14. G 15. B 16. K 17. I 18. J 19. E 20. H

根据“many creatures seem to follow the ancient proverb that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.””
根据“more than 20 bird species on four continents that emit virtually identical “whining (哀鸣)” calls”可知,研究对此现象进行了记录,D选项documenting“记录”,符合语境,document与study为主动关系,用现在分词,作后置定语,修饰study。
根据“parents into raising their chicks for them”可知,这里指的是被巢寄生鸟类利用的鸟,即寄主父母。
根据“individuals from a dozen or more species attack a cuckoo in response to whining calls in”可知,这里描述的是多种鸟同时发出声音攻击杜鹃的场景。B选项chorus“齐声,合唱”,符合题意,in chorus为固定短语,意为“齐声,一起”。故选B。
【16题详解】
考查名词。句意:许多鸟类也有一个共同的关于捕食者的词汇。根据后文“various songbirds produce ______ “seet” calls to warn of a raptor (猛禽) in flight”提到各种鸣禽发出不同的声音来警告捕食者,可以推断这里说的是鸟类有关于捕食者的共同“词汇”或声音信号。
根据““seet” calls to warn of a raptor (猛禽) in flight”可知,这里强调的是“嘶嘶”声能够被其他鸟类识别出来,从而起到警告作用。I选项recognizable“可识别的”符合语境,修饰“seet” calls,作定语。故选I。
A recent study found that when seabirds with good vision search for food with seabirds with strong senses of smell, they both have far greater success at catching krill”可知,这里强调的是跨物种交流对鸟类食物摄入量的积极影响。
Ⅱ. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Permissive Paths
I’ve always loved a ‘permissive path’ — a route across private land that the owner, manager or tenant has decided voluntarily to open to all. It’s always seemed like the nicest of ____21____. A surprise, a welcome, a generous act, as well as an implied agreement between walker and landowner: here is a safe route to use, ____22____. The direct ____23____ of “get off my land”, it is the action of a farmer or land manager interested in and part of their wider community.
Many permissive paths work well and have done for a significant amount of time, enhancing or connecting our network of public footpaths and byways. And there is much to gain in ____24____ benefit, too. For walkers, perhaps a route that ‘____25____’ across the land is scenic, invites curiosity and enquiry into what’s living or growing in a place through the seasons. For land managers, they can introduce a lot of cheer and common ____26____: great public relations, a gateway to building understanding and respect for the work and life of the countryside, plus more love for what else lives, or has lived, in a place, historically or ecologically.
Many land managers and farmers are critically ____27____ of the knowledge gap between most people and farming, as well as the need for access to the countryside for all. Many want to share the ____28____ of the space they live or work in. But it takes a certain amount of kindness, courage and effort to ____29____ a welcome onto land you are responsible for.
Kate Sharp, tenant farmer on the glorious, organic West Town Farm in Devon, ____30____ by semi-retired farmer Andy Bragg, says she loves “to help people enjoy the beautiful countryside with us and have a ____31____ to the farming we do here” through permissive paths. But she’s been saddened by the actions of some, with off-lead dogs misbehaving around livestock, poo (屎) not picked up or, weirdly, picked up, bagged, thrown or ____32____ somewhere.
West Town Farm ____33____ ‘Pasture for Life’ principles, grazing (放牧) animals on 100% rich and diverse fields. There is no place on it for dog poo, or poo in bags hanging from berry-and wildlife-rich hedgerows. Kate emphasises the majority of dog walkers use it in a friendly, respectful way, but the problem has got so bad from a few, she’s considering a no-dog policy. ____34____, the Bathurst Estate in Cirencester chose to monetise access after 300 years of use while Bridehead Estate in Dorset shut its access after 65 years and a new owner.
When this can happen, and when a few people ____35____ things for others, bold moves, such as Peer responsibility and the Right to Roam public access movement, offer better gateways to long-term solutions and cultural and social change. They are potential game changers.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
After receiving tenure (终身职位) in 2022 I considered taking a vacation. But I had 15 people in my lab, a partner who is also in academia with his own lab, and two children in elementary school. I felt I could not step away for a year. Then I connected with researchers in Uruguay seeking a collaborator experienced in my area, and I got a short-term Fulbright fellowship to explore the opportunity. I envisioned my 3-month stay as an intense period of lab work, data collection and scientific discoveries. The 5-hour time difference would leave me with enough hours to catch up with my lab and family back home.
When I arrived, I was dispirited to learn that the shuttle to the institute ran on a schedule that limited our work hours to 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mornings started with shared mate and conversations about our weekends or evenings, followed later by an extended lunch break that was sacred. I felt impatient.
Yet my research progressed steadily. Outside of work, another kind of progress was unfolding. I was still working long hours because of my responsibilities as a lab head, graduate program director, and National Institutes of Health study section member, but the built-in breaks — which often included an evening snack — made all the difference. I still got my work done, and the slower rhythm also left space for deeper thinking, both in my experiments and in my life. I was learning the value of working with intention rather than urgency, and of leaving room for the parts of life that can’t be scheduled. A calmness set in. I found myself laughing more, sleeping better, and enjoying the life I have worked hard to build.
Midway through my fellowship my family arrived for an extended visit, and I took 3 weeks off for a once-in-a-lifetime journey. We wandered through bustling neighborhoods framed by the Andes, and felt the thunder of waterfalls soaking us in mist. I began to notice small things: my daughter’s fascination with seashells, my son’s growing ease with strangers and his first words of Spanish.
When my fellowship ended 8 months ago, I returned with more than a set of data. I came back with a readjusted sense of how I want to live and work. I block my calendar so that no one can schedule a meeting during my off hour. I’ve built small rituals into my routine — a morning walk, a break away from the screen... These modest changes have reshaped the texture of my days. I find myself more focused in the lab, more patient with my students, and more present with my family. Productivity, I’ve come to see, is not measured only by research papers and grants. It is also sustained by presence, rest, and the relationships that give meaning to the work.
36. The author’s life can be described as ______ before she received a tenure.
A. an escape from family duties B. frequently on the run

38. The modest changes mentioned by the author might include ______.
A. becoming available when her lab members need to consult her
B. treating conversations about leisure as a religiously sacred ritual
C. replacing a long lunch break with deep thinking over a snack
D. reserving weekends for her family instead of unfinished work
39. Which of the following is probably the best title of the passage?
A. To work or not to work B. Approach to work-life balance
C. The experiment I didn’t plan D. Success isn’t measured by science
【答案】36. B 37. A 38. D 39. C

(B)
There’s no doubt that our climate is changing — NASA says the evidence is clear. Current warming is happening faster than at any other time in the past 10,000 years. But the effect a warmer world will have on hurricanes is hard to predict. Rising global temperatures are likely to impact hurricanes because tropical cyclones (气旋) feed on warm, wet air. But the complex nature of these storms makes it impossible to know exactly how they’ll change over time. On average, the evidence suggests that hurricanes are likely to become more frequent and more dangerous. As the world gets warmer, the air will get wetter, and wetter air means heavier rain. It’s chemistry: the hotter it is, the more evaporation there will be. Storm-induced flooding will also be more likely as ice sheets melt and the sea expands.
________
40. According to the passage, what is a likely effect of global warming on hurricanes?
A. Hurricanes will bring more rainfall due to wetter air.
B. Hurricanes will become less predictable in their path.
C. The wind speed of all hurricanes will immediately increase.
D. The total number of hurricanes each year will definitely double.
41. Which of the following is probably the best title of the flow chart?

Chinese check-ups
Foreigners visiting China often admire the country’s high-speed rail and glittering skylines in an exaggerated way. Its old-fashioned medical system, though, gets less praise. So Amie, a British woman, caused a stir online last month with a glowing video review of a public hospital in Beijing. With persistent stomach pain, and facing a long wait to see a doctor in Britain, she went to China, where she had once lived. Tests, diagnosis and treatment were quick and cost some 2,800 yuan. Even including the air fare, that was still less than she would have had to pay at a private hospital at home, she said. After Amie’s video went viral on Chinese social media, other foreigners chimed in with their own stories of cheap and efficient care in China.
A decade ago, officials set a target for China to become an “internationally competitive” destination for medical tourism by 2030, much as South Korea has, with wealthy Chinese often traveling there for complex treatments or cosmetic surgery. Now China is drawing a growing number of foreign patients. Last year its hospitals received nearly 1.3m of them, up almost 74% from 2022, according to Chinese media. China’s medical-tourism market is expected to increase from around 1.2 bn in 2025 to 3.4 bn by 2035, according to Market Research Future, a consultancy.
Many of China’s medical facilities are still second-rate, but in recent years its best hospitals have gained top-notch doctors and equipment. For some elective procedures such as laser eye surgery, they are world-class. They are also usually cheaper than Western hospitals. Many have English-speaking staff. And since 2023 China has fast expanded its visa-free entry scheme. This makes it easier to drop in for a check-up.
Most of the foreigners to be found in Chinese hospitals are still residents rather than medical tourists. But big cities like Shanghai and Beijing are starting to receive more patients from abroad. Growing numbers of Vietnamese are seeking treatment in hospitals in southern China. And Russians are popping over the border to hospitals in the north-east.
State media see this as an encouraging sign of the country’s growing appeal to patients overseas. “Compared with some Western countries, China’s medical system provides more efficient and affordable care,” a researcher told China Daily, a state newspaper. Such messages chime with the current publicity campaign to paint America as an insecure place.
But some Chinese worry about possible new strains on China’s medical system, which is largely publicly funded. Chinese doctors are hugely overworked. Queues often snake around hospitals. “Foreigners coming here to enjoy the benefits of Chinese taxpayers isn’t fair,” said one commenter on Amie’s video. “Will foreigners seize our medical resources?” asked an article on WeChat, a social-media app. Such worries appear overblown — public hospitals are only allowed to use 10% of capacity for international departments.
43. The underlined phrase “chimed in with” in paragraph 1 implies that foreigners ______.
A. highly admired the advanced infrastructure in China
B. agreed with Amie by sharing their similar experiences
C. challenged the high cost of air fares charged in Britain
D. raised questions about the doctors’ diagnosis in Beijing
44. What does the author of the passage say about South Korea’s medical system?
A. It will become a destination for medical tourism by 2030.
B. Its low efficiency causes it to lose foreign tourists to China.
C. Its hospitals are largely funded by wealthy Chinese investors.
D. It has become internationally competitive in medical tourism.
45. What can be inferred about America’ medical system according the publicity campaign?
A. Doctors in America are hugely overworked.
B. It is insecure to fund public hospitals in U.S.
C. One bad illness can ruin someone financially.
D. Seizing the national medical resources is unfair.
46. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The rise of medical tourism in China and its implications.
B. How foreigners compare hospitals in China and Britain.
C. Needless concern over the capacity for foreign patients.
D. Why China adopts visa-free policy for foreign tourists.

From classrooms to care homes
Less than three years ago Ms Jiang was tidying away toys and singing rhymes as a teacher at a nursery in Beijing. She remembers parents knocking on the door in an effort to sign their children up. That gradually became rarer, until last year Ms Jiang found herself distributing promotional leaflets for the nursery in her lunchbreaks. ____47____ Last May Ms Jiang moved into a sector with better growth prospects: care homes and her abilities to teach handicrafts and play games come in useful.
Between 2017 and 2022 China’s total fertility (生育) rate crashed from 1.8 to 1. Between 2021 and 2024 pupil numbers in pre-schools fell from 48m to 36m. Some 42,000 of 295,000 pre-schools have closed, and 360,000 of 3.2m pre-school teachers have quit.
____48____ Whereas China’s nursery-going group will fall by 14m in the next five years, the number of people aged 65 and over will rise from 211m to 256m. China badly needs more staff to care for them. In 2021 it had just half a million certified care workers. That made for just 0.27 care workers per 100 people aged 65 and above, a shockingly low number. Universities have launched degrees in elderly care. The first batch of students graduated last year, to hot demand.
All this motivated one Ms Wu in 2023 to open her own care home in Jiangxi after years in nurseries. She has nine residents paying 2,600 yuan a month to be there. The outlook is bright, she says: right now those in care homes have multiple children on average. Those born in the 1970s and 1980s mostly have only one child, which means fewer people to look after them when they eventually get old. ____49____ She has also had a few from nursery teachers looking to make the switch she did.
The government likes “mixed-use” facilities where both young and old are looked after. ____50____ It had facilities for table-tennis and space for calligraphy, and when the nursery teachers were free, they taught the elderly. The old certainly enjoy seeing the young; some grandparents even drop off tiny relatives at the nursery before heading to their own floor.
A. A newspaper has called for local governments to provide funds for such projects.
B. A silver lining exists for those sharp-witted enough to adapt.
C. Caring for the elderly is easier than caring for young children.
D. Last year in Chongqing, for example, an empty floor of a nursery was turned into an “elderly-care station”.
E. Ms Wu gets enquiries almost every day from prospective customers.
F. She realised the writing was on the wall.

Ⅲ. Summary Writing

Climate Anxiety
Climate change is an issue that can feel worrying. As world leaders meet at COP30 to discuss climate change, there’s lots you can do to help with climate anxiety.
There are often lots of stories about the environment and climate change in the news, from forest fires to rising temperatures and this can make you anxious.” It can feel frightening, uncertain and overwhelming, says author and therapist Eloise Skinner. She’s an expert in how people think, feel and behave. If you are feeling this way, you are not alone. A survey by the Save the Children charity found that 70% of young people they spoke to are worried about climate change.
There are ways to help ease your worries. One of them is making sure you have all the correct information and accurate details about climate change. “Topics that feel overwhelming when we don’t have all the information can start to feel less scary when we educate ourselves on the issue,” says Skinner. It’s very important to make sure you’re getting your information from the right places, though. “For example, it might be good to read more about it in books or articles, rather than social media,” says Skinner.
It’s important to remember that there are lots of people including children, working hard to tackle climate change and there is still hope. Author Ben Martynoga knows all about the environment. He wrote a book about the different and amazing ways nature helps the planet. He says, “We can definitely change what happens next. Climate change pushes us to live differently and that gives us a real chance to build something better: wilder cities, cleaner energy, and a world where nature and people both thrive.
Skinner says that for some people, “It might feel better to take small practical actions in everyday life towards supporting the climate, rather than learning all the details.” to help make you feel better. So whether that’s litter picking in your area, using less plastic, planting flowers for bees, raising money for an environmental charity or walking to school instead of getting a lift in the car, there are lots of ways you can make a real difference to the planet.

Last week, Mingqi Middle School’s spring field trip to the zoo left some students concerned about the animals’ living circumstances. A school English newspaper survey on zoo closure revealed that 81% of students opposed it versus merely 19% in favor, as most believed zoos’ merits outweigh their demerits. I side with this viewpoint.
To begin with, zoos serve as immersive educational platforms, enabling people, particularly youngsters, to understand animals up close and foster their animal protection awareness. Furthermore, zoos provide endangered species with a secure haven and professional care, shielding them from natural perils and human hunting. Last but not least, zoos conduct breeding research to safeguard biodiversity.
In brief, zoos are irreplaceable for animal protection and education. With better living conditions for animals, zoos surely deserve to exist.

A. Weathering the storm B. Are hurricanes getting stronger?

51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
