【中考真题】
In a lively martial arts (武术) club in Akpro-Misserete, Benin (贝宁), the sound of feet hitting the ground and cries of “Hay-Hah!” fill the air. Damien Degbo, 53, teaches his students kung fu and tai chi there. For him, Chinese martial arts are more than just exercise. They’re a way of life and a bridge between Benin and China.
At the age of 13, Degbo watched Chinese martial arts movies in Benin’s capital. He loved how these actors fought with beauty and power. That’s when his love of kung fu began. Degbo joined a private kung fu club and later learnt Chinese at a culture centre. In 2010, he started his own club, Super Shaolin of Benin. In 2014, he got a chance to train at China’s Shaolin Temple. The training was hard, but it taught him a lot about Chinese culture. He learnt how to practice calligraphy, tea preparation and traditional Chinese medicine.
Now, Degbo’s club has more than 350 students. He teaches not only Chinese martial arts but also Chinese culture. Chefif Deen, a student of the kung fu master, says kung fu has changed his life, helping him become stronger and more self-controlled.
Degbo thinks of himself as someone who spreads Chinese culture. He wants to share with young people Chinese good qualities like self-control and respect. As China and Benin get closer, more and more people like Degbo will help build a stronger friendship between the two countries through kung fu.

It was half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror (镜子) and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone, not bad,” he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls’ heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.
“Perfect,” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste ad.”
As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups have paid off.
But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six-footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet! Six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.
Why didn’t his legs grow with the rest of his body? He was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family, he was even shorter than his “little” sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from?
He certainly didn’t get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother’s side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle.
Thanks a lot, Grandpa!
Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay’s short legs and they had a nickname (外号) for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn’t like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.
But Jay couldn’t see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team and, like a rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.
Jay shook his head. “Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby legs. Yeah, that’s me,” he said to himself with a little smile. Suddenly, he heard his mother’s voice.
“Jay! It’s breakfast time!”

When Mark walked empty-handed up the sand, the sun was shining brightly. The watching children were as disappointed as he was. They looked at each other and spoke softly so he couldn’t hear.
“Is that all?”
“Is he giving up?”
But Mark wasn’t giving up. He rested on the hot sand. He ate some chocolate biscuits and fed energy back into his body. Slowly his strength and determination returned. “Would the crayfish(鳌虾) still be there?” He wondered.
Mark knew crayfish usually hid in the darkness beneath rocks, only coming out at night to feed. How long would his crayfish remain there before it went back under the rocks?
Mark forced himself to be patient. He lay on his back in the sun, eyes closed, nearly asleep. Excitement and speed would only waste energy. Finally Mark rose and went back into the water.
The children, watching from the shore, were silent. They waited, twisting(缠绕) curls of hair in their fingers, digging their teeth into their knees.
Out in the bay, the crayfish was still there. Its feelers moved in the currents(水流).
Mark took long, slow, deep breaths. He cheered himself up with encouraging words, “I can do it. I can. I can do it.” Over and over he told himself, hoping his mind would get the idea and believe it.
Down he dived. Down. Down. Down. Lungs bursting, ears popping, eyes painful. Nearly there. Pressure(压力), Pressure. He reached out his hands. Reaching. Reaching. But it was no good. He couldn’t make it. Only an arm’s length away, but he couldn’t reach the crayfish.
Up he went. Tired, burning, disappointed, annoyed. Floating on the surface, he told himself off.
“You hurried too much. Take your time. Prepare yourself. Don’t dive until everything feels right,” he spoke to himself calmly, and he felt the confidence building up inside him. “I can do it. I can do it.” He felt good. It was going to be a good dive. Breathing deeply, relaxing, concentrating. Three more breaths. One, two, three. Down!

Sixteen-year-old Ava, once a quiet and proud school magazine editor (编辑) lost her confidence after losing her position. To find herself again, she went hiking in the mountains. This wasn’t just a hike to clear her mind. Ava was on a journey to rediscover herself. Though the road was difficult, each step filled her spirit with new energy.
While walking through a hard part of the path, she saw something strange—a young eagle lying on the ground, hurt and unable to fly. It looked weak and helpless after last night’s storm. Ava felt sad and wanted to help it.
Right away, she made a camp near the bird and gave it water and food. The eagle watched her carefully, backing away at first. But Ava stayed, speaking softly with endless patience.
Day after day, she returned to help the eagle. She built it a small home, gently cleaned its wounded wing, and made sure it had enough food. Sometimes Ava wondered whether she was making a difference. Yet, as the eagle grew stronger, so did she.
Weeks later, Ava found the eagle standing tall on a rock, spreading its wings wide to face the rising sun. It got well completely. A deep sense of peace filled Ava’s heart—something she hadn’t felt in a long time. She saved the bird, but by doing so, she had found her own hidden strength.

“Hello!” she said. “Seems to me you’re putting on weight.”
“Yes, I guess I am,” replied Wilbur. “At my age it’s a good idea to keep growing.”
“I really don’t agree with you,” said the old sheep, “You know why they’re fattening you up, don’t you?”
“No,” said Wilbur.
“Well, I don’t like to spread bad news,” said the sheep, “but they’re fattening you up because they’re going to kill you, that’s why.”
“Kill you. Turn you into smoked bacon (熏猪肉) and ham,” continued the old sheep. “Almost all young pigs get killed by the farmers as soon as the cold weather set in. Everyone is on the list--Lurvy, Zuckerman, even John Arable.”
“Stop!” screamed Wilbur. “I don’t want to die! Save me, somebody! Save me!”
“Be quiet, Wilbur!” said Charlotte, the spider, who was the best friend of Wilbur.
“I can’t be quiet,” screamed Wilbur, jumping up and down. “I don’t want to be killed. I don’t want to die. Is it true what the old sheep says, Charlotte? Is it true they are going to kill me when the cold weather comes? Will I die?”
“Well,” said the spider, thought for a while at her web, “the old sheep has seen many poor pigs killed. If she says they plan to kill you, I’m sure it’s true.”

“I didn’t understand then what he meant. The three of them were desperately (不顾一切地) pulling and pushing at the boat, and calling each other names, but something was wrong with the ropes and the boat wouldn’t move. I stood away from them, watching the sea, black and calm and deadly. My head was full of ideas, and I was thinking hard, but I couldn’t see any chance of survival for us. You think I’m a coward (懦夫), because I just stood there, but what would you do? You can’t tell—nobody can. I needed time…”
He was breathing quickly. He was not speaking to me, but seemed to be on trial (审判) in front of an unseen judge, who was responsible for his soul. This was a matter too difficult for the court of inquiry (调查法庭) to decide. It was about the true nature of life, about light and darkness, truth and lies, good and evil.
As he spoke, his eyes shone. “Ever since I was a boy, I’ve been preparing myself for difficulties and danger. I was ready. I tell you! Ready for anything! But—‘and the light went out of his face’—this was so unexpected! Well, I’ll tell you the rest. As I was standing there on the bridge, the second engineer ran up and begged me to help them. I pushed him away, in fact I hit him. ‘Won’t you save your own life—you coward?’ he cried. Coward! That’s what he called me. Ha! Ha! Ha!”
Jim threw himself back in his chair and laughed loudly. I had never heard anything as bitter (痛苦) as that noise. All around us on the veranda (游廊) conversation stopped. People stared at him.
After a while he continued with his story. I was saying to the Patta (帕特纳号). “Sink! Go on, sink!” I wanted it to finish. Then in the sky I saw a big black thunder cloud coming towards us, and I knew the ship couldn’t survive a storm. I saw that George, the third engineer, had now joined the other three, who were still trying to get the boat lowered. Suddenly George fell backwards, and lay without moving on the deck. He was dead. Heart trouble, I think. And just then there was a loud crash as the captain and the two others managed to get the boat down into the water. They were in the boat, and I could hear them shouting from below, “Jump, George! Jump!” Jim trembled (颤抖) a little, and then sat very still, as he relived (再次体验) the awful moment.
“There were eight hundred living people on that ship, and they were shouting for the one dead man to jump! ‘Jump, George, we’ll catch you!’ I felt the ship move—I thought she was going down, under me…” Jim put his hand to his head again, and paused for a moment. “I had jumped…it seems,” he added. His clear blue eyes looked miserably (痛苦地) at me, and I felt like an old man helplessly watching a childish disaster.
“It seems you did,” I agreed.

Dwayne sat and looked at the blank paper in front of him, considering how he would write a composition (作文) about his life.

Too late to start ice hockey?
As teachers, we often love to encourage our students to try new things at a young age. However, I think this is a huge mistake—learning new things at any age is important and it can help us become better.
Take myself as an example. I didn’t start playing ice hockey until my early 40s. My son is a huge sports fan and he often asked me to take him to watch games between the big teams. Gradually, I fell in love with the sport, and after a few months, I decided to give it a try.
To be honest, it is the hardest sport I’ve ever done. There was so much to learn. In addition to mastering skating skills, I also needed to learn how to pass and shoot. I saw a lot of players get on the ice and pick it up quickly and easily. Yet I was an exception. I was so terrible at skating, but I never thought about giving up. So I took a skating training course, then joined a hockey team and practiced hard in my free time. I finally mastered the skill, though it took me a really long time.
Learning hockey has also helped me be a better teacher in some way. Being bad at hockey helps me to understand those students in my class who have difficulty in learning English. I’m not stupid—it just takes me longer to learn and practice a skill before I’m able to do it. Some students are like that too—they might need to hear an explanation 3 to 4 times or need a few more days of practice.
It’s good to learn new things, whether they come easily to you or with more difficulty. Maybe you didn’t use the past year to improve yourself or to learn a new skill—but that’s OK! It won’t be late to start anything at any time.

Chinese architect (建筑师) Liu Jiakun, 68, was awarded the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize on March 4, becoming the second winner from China to receive the highest honor in the field of atchitecture. Based in Chengdu, Liu’s career lasts for forty years with more than 30 projects. He set up Jiakun Architects in 1999 and has built plenty of work, from small, beautifully designed museums to large business buildings and city plans.
Instead of following the same style, Liu’s projects include local color and depend on “low-tech” simplicity to achieve beauty, a magazine reported. “He never depends on a recurring (反复出现的) method. Instead, he evaluates (评估) the specific characteristics and requirements of each project differently,” the jury (评审团) said when announcing the award.
One of Liu’s most well-known projects was the so-called “rebirth bricks” he created after the terrible Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. To help with rebuilding, Liu made bricks using local wheat fiber, cement (水泥) and rubble (瓦砾) from fallen buildings. More than just recycling, these bricks stood for the rebirth of the material and “the rebirth of the community’s spirit at a time of national mourning”, reported The Guardian. These bricks were later used in his other projects, including the Shuijingfang Museum in Chengdu and the Novartis medicine company in Shanghai.
Liu’s design also pay attention to common people. This is shown in his largest project, West Village, a five-floor city complex (综合体) completed in 2015 in Chengdu. The complex includes a soccer field, a market, and paths for cyclists and walkers. With grass growing through holes in the bricks, the project celebrates “the energy of ‘everydayness’,” wrote Austin Williams in 2017. It has become a popular place for city people to spend their free time.
“The purpose of architecture is to create a beautiful, just and dignified (有尊严的) living environment. People’s real lives, happiness and dignity are what we work for,” Liu told China Daily.

⑤He prefers “low-tech” simplicity to create beauty.

Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day Tom told Huck about his idea.
“Where can we look for treasure?” asked Huck.
“It’s hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in deserted (废弃的) houses.”
“Who hides it?”
“Robbers (劫匪). You can find a box with a hundred dollars in it, or full of valuable things.”
So, one Saturday afternoon Tom and his friend went to look for treasure at the deserted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place. And the boys looked at each other in fear. They entered quietly, and searched downstairs. There were cobwebs (蜘蛛网) everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped.
“What is it?” whispered Huck, going white with fear.
“Keep still! There’s someone downstairs.”
The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard in a wide hat and the other was dirty and unpleasant-looking. The boys shook with fear.
Then the Spaniard spoke. It was Joe! Tom and Huck felt even more scared.
The men sat down on the floor and ate. Then they lay down and fell asleep. When the two men woke up, the stranger said, “It’s time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the $650 from the robbery?”
“Let’s keep $30 each and leave the rest here.”

Cook was making little “tuk-tuk-tuk” sounds. Sadio had her hand over her mouth. Hans was trying so hard to understand. Only Godber’s man was enjoying himself. It was his story.
“What’s wrong? What’s happened?”
“There’s been an awful accident,” cook said. “A man’s been killed.”
“A man killed! Where? How? When?”
But Godber’s man wanted to tell the story.
“You know those little cottages (小屋) just down the road from here, miss?” Of course she knew them. “Well, there’s a young man called Scott living there. He has a horse and cart. Something frightened the horse in town this morning, the cart (马车) turned over, and Scott fell in the road on the back of his head. Killed.”
“Dead!” Laura stared at Godber’s man.
“Dead when they picked him up,” Godber’s man said. “They were taking the body home as I was coming here.” Then he said, “He’s left a wife and five little ones.”
“Jose, come here!” Laura took her sister’s hand and pulled her across the kitchen and through the door.
“Jose,” she said, “how can we stop everything?”
“Stop everything, Laura!” cried Jose. “What do you mean?”
“Stop the garden party, of course.”
“Stop the garden party? My dear Laura, don’t be unreasonable. Of course we can’t stop the party. Nobody expects us to. Don’t be so silly.”
“But we can’t possibly have a garden party with a man dead just outside the front gate.”
That really was silly, because the Sheridans’ house was on a hill, and the cottages were right down at the bottom of the hill. There was a wide road between them. True, they were still much too near. They were not suitable neighbours for people like the Sheridans.
The cottages were ugly little low brown things. Nothing but rubbish grew in their gardens. Even the smoke coming from their chimneys (烟囱) looked poor. The people who lived in them lived by washing other people’s clothes, or mending shoes or cleaning chimneys. And they all had far too many children.
When the Sheridan children were little, they were not allowed to go near the cottages, for fear that they heard bad language or caught some awful disease. But now that they were grown up, Laura and Laurie sometimes walked past. It was dirty and unpleasant, but Laura and Laurie believed that they should experience all sides of life. They must go everywhere; the must see everything.
“Think how that poor woman will feel if she hears a band playing,” said Laura.
“Oh, Laura!” Jose began to be seriously angry. “If you want to stop a band every time someone has an accident, you’re going to have a very difficult life. I’m just as sorry about it as you are.”

The freezing rain beat against my back as I pulled the heavy cab through the icy streets. My hooves (蹄) slipped on the frozen stones, but the driver John kept pulling the rope. “Move faster, you lazy animal!” he shouted. I could see my breath turning white in the air, my sides moving up and down rapidly.
When the wheel stuck in a rut, the whip (鞭子) cracked near my ear. “Lift your feet!” John screamed. I pushed as hard as I could, my wet fur felt heavy on my neck. As the carriage finally moved, I heard a scary noise from the wooden parts of the carriage.
“Sir, this horse is struggling,” a lady passenger called out, looking carefully through the cab window. “His legs are shaking!”
“Don’t worry, madam. He’s strong as an ox,” John lied, snapping the whip again: My right horseshoe had been loose for days, sending sharp pain through my leg with every step.
At the blacksmith’s shop, I tried to slow down. Old Mr. Clay ran out with his lantern. “Stop! That horse is losing a shoe!” he cried. But John just laughed. “No time for your nonsense!”
Rainwater mixed with the salt from my eyes. I remembered kind Mr. Gordon, my first owner, who would check my hooves daily and feed me sugar cubes. Since being sold to this cab company, no one had touched my sweaty neck gently or spoken gentle words to me.
Back in the stable at midnight, my swollen leg kept shaking as I chewed (咀嚼) rotten hay. Ginger, the old female horse next door, nosed through the wooden boards. “Stay strong,” she whispered. “Humans think we’re machines that never break.”
Moonlight through the broken roof showed the frozen water in the corner. I lowered my aching head, wondering if spring would ever come.

Scene I
(On a cold night, Buck, the half-dog and half-wolf, sits with his kind master John. They are having a heart-to-heart talk by the fire.)
Buck: John, do you remember the day we met and you saved me from that cruel man? You gave me a chance to live again.
John: Of course, Buck. I could see the power in your eyes, even though you were hurt.
Buck: You’re my family now. I’d do anything for you.
John: (Touching Buck’s head) So would I. And you also saved me after we lived together, remember?
You once jumped into the river to pull me out. You didn’t hesitate (犹豫) at all.
Buck: I love you, John. But something calling me. It’s like a voice deep inside, telling me to run free in the wild.
John: I understand, Buck. You’re not just any dog. You have the heart of a wolf. The wild is part of who you are.
Buck: I’ll always remember you. But I think one day, I’ll have to answer that call.
Scene 2
(Buck and his kind master John continued talking.)
Buck: (Thinking) The wild is calling me. I can feel it in my blood. But what about John? He saved me, cared for me...
John: (Softly) You’re a strong one, Buck. The strongest dog I’ve ever known. But I see it in your eyes—the wild is pulling you away.
Buck: You know I love you, John. But the forest, the wolves ... they’re part of me too.
John: (Sighing) (叹气) I understand, boy. You don’t belong to me or anyone. You belong to the wild.
(Later, Buck hears the howl (嚎叫声) of a wolf pack (狼群) outside. He looks back at John, crying.)
Buck: I don’t want to leave you, John. But the call ... it’s too strong.
John: (Smiling sadly) Go, Buck. Follow your heart. You’ll always be my family, no matter where you are.

Ava watched the bird flying with tears in her eyes—joy and sadness mixed together. The bird was free, and in that moment, she felt free too. Sometimes, helping others is the only way to discover the courage we’ve hidden inside.

“I don’t want to die,” he cried sadly, throwing himself to the ground, “I want to stay alive, right here in my comfortable barn with all my friends. I want to breathe the beautiful air and lie in the beautiful sun.”
“You shall not die,” said Charlotte, briskly (轻快地).

1.What does “the huge mistake” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

1.How many projects were the “rebirth bricks” used in?
A.8. B.4. C.3. D.30.
2.What does Liu Jiakun do to make his projects unusual?
①He insists on the same style.
②He pays attention to local colour.
③He mixes tradition with modernity.
④He celebrates the energy of common people.
⑤He prefers “low-tech” simplicity to create beauty.
A.①③④ B.②④⑤ C.①④⑤ D.②③④
3.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The energy of “everydayness”. B.Liu’s largest project, West Village.
C.A market in a five-floor city complex. D.A soccer field in a five-floor city complex.
4.What can be the best title for the passage?

Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day Tom told Huck about his idea.
“Where can we look for treasure?” asked Huck.
“It’s hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in deserted (废弃的) houses.”

1.What were Scott’s living conditions like?
A.Poor. B.Safe. C.Modern. D.Comfortable.
2.What can we learn about the Sheridan family?
A.The Sheridan children knew Scott well.
B.The Sheridan family lived a challenging life.
C.The Sheridan family planned to have a party.
D.The Sheridan children liked going near the cottages.
3.Which is the correct order of the following events?
a. Godber’s man told the story.
b. Scott died in a cart accident.
c. Laura and Laurie sometimes walked past.

【导语】本文讲述了Sheridan家的Laura在得知附近贫民区一位名叫Scott的男子因马车事故身亡后,与姐姐Jose就是否取消即将举行的花园派对发生争执的故事。
1.细节理解题。根据“The cottages were ugly little low brown things. Nothing but rubbish grew in their gardens. Even the smoke coming from their chimneys (烟囱) looked poor.”可知,那些小木房又矮又丑,全是褐色。它们的院子里只长些杂草。连烟囱里冒出来的烟都显得灰暗。这些细节表明他的生活条件非常贫困。故选A。
2.细节理解题。根据“Stop the garden party, of course...Stop the garden party? My dear Laura, don’t be unreasonable. Of course we can’t stop the party. Nobody expects us to.”
根据“That really was silly, because the Sheridans’ house was on a hill, and the cottages were right down at the bottom of the hill. There was a wide road between them.”可知,Sheridan家住在山上,而穷人的小屋在山脚下,虽然地理上很近,但社会地位和经济条件相差甚远。这条宽阔的道路象征着贫富之间的隔阂。因此“There was a wide road between them.”表示“它象征着穷人跟富人的隔阂。”故选D。
5.推理判断题。根据“‘Think how that poor woman will feel if she hears a band playing,’ said Laura.”和“If you want to stop a band every time someone has an accident, you’re going to have a very difficult life. I’m just as sorry about it as you are.”可知,Laura和Jose正在争论是否要取消派对,气氛紧张。推测下一段最可能的发展是Laura如何成功说服Jose停止开派对。选项B“劳拉是如何成功地阻止了这次聚会的。”符合。故选B。
