Step 1. Lead-in
Activity 1: Show 3 hobby pictures (football, calligraphy, hiking). Ask students: “What do you do to enjoy these hobbies? Use verbs like ‘play’ or ‘do’ to describe.” (e.g., play football).
Step 2. Vocabulary Collocation Practice
Activity 1: Complete 2a: Present the verb-noun matching table. Ask students to match words in the box (e.g., calligraphy, coins) with verbs (collect, do, go, play, write). Walk around to help (e.g., We “do calligraphy”; “collect coins”). After finishing, check answers as a class .
Activity 2: “Collocation Race” game: Divide the class into 2 groups. Show a hobby noun on the PPT; the first student to say the correct verb gets a point.
Step 3. Phrase Practice in Conversations
Activity 1: Introduce phrases in 2b. Explain meanings with examples, and ask students to repeat.
Activity 2: Complete 2b: Ask students to fill in the conversation with correct verb forms. Then let students practice the conversation in pairs (read aloud naturally).
Activity 3: Pair work: Ask students to create a new short conversation using 2 of the phrases . Invite 2 pairs to perform.
Step 4. Vocabulary Application in Passage
Activity 1: Complete 2c: Let students fill in the passage with words in the box. After finishing, ask 1 student to read the passage aloud, then check answers.
Activity 2: Group discussion (4 students per group): Ask groups to talk about “How does the passage’s hobby (dancing) help the writer?”. Invite 1 group to share.
Step 5. Summary
Summarize key content:
Verb-Noun Collocations: collect (coins), do (calligraphy), go (hiking), play (football), write (poems)
Key Phrases: take up, give up, reduce stress, get over
Ask 1 student to list 2 collocations and 1 phrase.
Step 6. Homework
Basic Level: Copy the collocations and phrases 2 times, and write 3 sentences with collocations.
Improving Level: Write a short conversation (5 sentences) about starting a new hobby, using 2 phrases from 2b.
Activate prior knowledge of hobby verbs, lead into the collocation task (2a).
