“Stephen!” shouted Billy from the back of the class. “What’s 160 divided by 7?”
“22.85714,” replied Stephen without looking up.
“Good job!” said Billy, copying the number down in his notebook.
“Stephen! When is Thomas’s birthday?” asked Mary.
“It’s February 16,” said Stephen, “and he was born on a Tuesday.”
“Wow!” said Thomas. “How did you know that?”
“You told me,” said Stephen, “on November 5 last year, at 3:05 pm. It was nine months, three days, four hours and sixteen minutes ago...”
Carol cut in, “You did the calculation (计算) all in your head?”
“Yes, of course,” said Stephen. “How else would I have done it?”
Carol couldn’t believe her ears and almost fell off her chair.
“Wow!” said Thomas. “We have a real genius (天才) here. Right here, in our class!” He looked at Stephen and gave him a big smile.
Stephen turned bright red, like a tomato. “I am not a genius,” he said quietly. “I’m just Stephen.”
“But you’re so good at math and remembering things, surely you must be a genius,” said Thomas kindly.
“I can prove (证明) I’m not,” said Stephen.
He got up and started to collect things from his classmates: a painting, a geography notebook, a history notebook and an English notebook. Then he went to the front of the class.
“Tell me what you see,” Stephen said, holding up Carol’s painting.
“A really good picture!” shouted out Thomas.
Next Stephen picked out Thomas’s geography notebook. “Listen up,” he said. “Test 1, A+. Test 2, A+. Test 3, A+.”
“Good job!” Mary shouted.
“Now you, Mary,” said Stephen. “History project last term-teacher’s words: an excellent piece of work. History project last year-teacher’s words: excellent, good job, Mary.”
Stephen continued, “Now I’m going to read you a poem.” It was from Billy’s English notebook
“What a beautiful poem!” said Carol.
“And what a nice way to prove you’re not a genius,” said Thomas. “You just showed us that ▲ , didn’t you?”
“I hope so,” said Stephen, and he went back to his desk without another word.

In science class, Mrs. Evans returned the graded test papers. Jason quickly looked at his paper and sighed (叹息). He failed again. His friend Sam, sitting next to him, smiled at his own high score.
On the walk home, the two boys talked about the coming science project. “I just don’t understand the instructions,” Jason said, sounding worried. “I think I’m going to do poorly on this one, too.”
“Don’t worry,” Sam replied. “We can work on it at my house after school. I can help you.”
Jason frowned (皱眉). “No, it’s fine. I’ll manage by myself.” He said quietly.
Sam looked surprised but didn’t say anything more.
That night, Sam called Jason. “Hey, what are you doing?” he asked.
Jason was staring at his textbook, feeling upset. He didn’t want to tell Sam he needed help. “Oh, just watching TV,” Jason lied.
“It’s just 7:30! I thought you’d be working on the project,” Sam said.
Jason felt his face get hot. “Well, maybe I just want to relax! Not everyone finishes their work as fast as you!” he snapped (厉声说).
There was a short silence on the phone. “Okay… I’ll talk to you tomorrow then,” Sam said softly before hanging up.
Jason tried to read his textbook again, but the words made no sense. He felt sorry for being rude. Taking a deep breath, he called Sam back.
“Hello?” Sam answered.
“I’m sorry,” Jason said. “I was stuck on the project and felt upset that you found it so easy. I shouldn’t have shouted at you.”
“It’s okay,” Sam replied. “I understand.”
“Would you… could you still help me?” Jason asked hopefully.
“Sure!” Sam said. “Come over now. We can work it out together.”
They spent the next two hours on the project. Sam explained the difficult parts patiently.

I have never been competitive, never winning or truly entering a single competition. My best friend Amy, however, is another story, she always takes first place at all her swimming competitions. We’ve been friends for ten years, and her energy and bright smile still warm me.
I sat in the front row of the stadium, certain Amy would win the Olympic final.
I’d seen her exhausting daily training and extra hours spent in the pool. Her coach and mother sat beside me, as nervous as I was. The race was intense (激烈的). Amy was behind at first, then caught up, touching the wall just before her rival (对手). The crowd cheered, but I smiled with pride.
“What does winning feel like?” I asked that night. “Relief,” she said. “Before every competition, I feel like a string (弦) pulled too tight. I train harder and harder just to silence the voice telling me I’m not good enough. After it’s over, the string breaks. At least the pain stops.” Swimming, once her joy, had become a pressure, so she decided to quit (退出).
I was shocked. She said she had thought about it for a long time and only needed my support, because she knew her mother and coach would be angry, which turned out to be true.

It was the last math exam before summer. But Scott didn’t worry. He was the best math student in the class, and he never had to work very hard at it. It used to make the other students mad because he never studied, yet he always got the best marks.
As usual, he was the first one done. The next day, a call came to his house and he was asked to go to the school.
When he arrived at the school, the headmaster was there to meet him. “Wow!” he thought. “I must have scored 100 percent on the exam!” But what the headmaster said next left Scott surprised. “You failed,” she said. “Since you were a little kid, you have found math easy. You surely have the gift for math but you waste it. It’s time to know that you can’t just walk into an exam unprepared.”
The headmaster continued, “I was like you when I was a girl. My gift was in science. I didn’t need to study for science at all. I was the best in my class. But one day, I failed a big exam. You see this picture? It was given to me by my science teacher that day. This ugly-looking bird is called a buzzard (秃鹫). Read what it says at the bottom.”
Scott read it aloud, “Welcome to the Buzzard Club. Remember, it’s not about brains. It’s about hard work.”
“A buzzard can only fly if it gets a running start,” the headmaster explained. “It can’t just fly into the air like other birds. But once it’s in the air, it can fly very high. Keep this bird in mind. Remember, studying is like that running start. Together with your natural ability, it will allow you to fly like a bird!”

Lily was a shy girl who stammered (口吃) badly. Every time she raised her hand to speak in class, her face turned red, and her words got stuck in her throat. Her classmates would laugh quietly, and she would sit down feeling embarrassed, vowing (发誓) never to speak in public again. She thought her stammer made her useless—she could never be like the other girls who spoke clearly and confidently.
One day, her English teacher noticed her sadness. “Lily, I’ve read your reports—they’re full of wonderful ideas,” the teacher said gently. “Your voice deserves to be heard. Stammering doesn’t make you less valuable; it’s just part of who you are. Why not try practicing with me after class?” Encouraged by the teacher’s trust, Lily agreed.
Every afternoon, they practiced reading aloud. Lily recorded her voice, listened carefully, and tried again. She joined the school speech club, where she stood on stage even when her hands shook. At first, she made mistakes, but no one laughed—everyone cheered her on. After three months of hard work, Lily participated in the school debate (辩论) competition. She took a deep breath, looked at the audience, and spoke slowly but clearly. When she finished, the hall erupted in applause.

One early morning on the weekend, I decided to learn how to make jiaozi from my grandmother. I thought it would be fun and easy at the very beginning, but soon it came to me that it wasn’t as simple as it looked.
At first, I didn’t pay attention to the keen-edged knife while cutting vegetables. My finger got cut because of my carelessness. Luckily, it wasn’t serious. Grandma was nervous and quickly helped me clean the cut. “My poor little girl! Be careful next time!” said Grandma softly. Through the painful lesson, I learned that safety should always come first.
After that accident, I continued working with Grandma. We made the dough (面团), mixed the filling and started shaping the dumplings. However, I kept making mistakes. Some of my dumplings were too thick, others were not properly sealed (封闭) and some even had too much filling, making them difficult to close. It was so disappointing, but Grandma kept encouraging me.
By noon, at about ten to twelve, I finished making a plate of dumplings—some were perfect and some were a bit messy. Dad ate my ugliest dumpling first. “Tastes better than it looks!” he laughed. Mum encouraged me, “They’re the most delicious dumplings I have ever had. I am so proud of you!”
Now I understand that making jiaozi isn’t just about the final product; it is about learning patience, having fun with my family, and improving through mistakes. Mistakes aren’t signs of weakness. Instead, they should be viewed (看待) as stepping stones to achievements.

Tess had been in bed with the flu for nearly a week. She was tired of feeling sick.
On Friday, Tess’s mom had to go back to work, so Tess’s grandmother, Nonnie, was coming to stay with her for the day. Tess waited impatiently for Grandma to arrive, hoping she would bring some homemade peach ice cream. Finally, she heard voices downstairs.
“How’s my girl?” she asked Tess. “I heard you were feeling under the weather.” Nonnie was carrying a small blue bowl in one hand. A quilt was draped (搭) over her other arm.

Dubai has the largest Chinese community in the Middle East. For many years, Chinese families there had to choose between sending their children to local schools and bringing them back to China for education. Luckily, in 2020, a local Chinese school solved this problem. It is the first school abroad to follow China’s national basic curriculum (课程). Students here learn all subjects in Chinese and can also make friends from different countries.

He moved to Iran in 2016 for his business and later married an Iranian woman. They hoped their son could receive a Chinese education, so they moved to Dubai to enroll (使入学) him in this school. They believe learning Chinese will help their son understand Chinese culture better.
When Peng first came for an interview, he was so nervous that he couldn’t speak. After hearing their family story, the school offered him a second chance. This time, Peng sang an Iranian children’s song and said, “I like this school and want to study Chinese here.” Now Peng can speak Chinese well. He scored 99.5 points in his last exam. His parents are very proud of his great progress.

Last summer, my family and I took a trip to a small coastal (沿海的) village named Koh Chang. It was a three-hour drive from our city. The moment we arrived, I was amazed by the clean air and the sound of waves (波浪).
We stayed in a small house near the beach. On the first day, we built sandcastles (沙堡) and swam in the blue sea. The water was clean and cool. In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious seafood dinner at a local restaurant. The fish was the best I had ever tasted.
The most meaningful part was meeting an old fisherman. He had a small boat and offered to take us fishing early the next morning. ▲ During the trip, he shared many stories about his life at sea. He told us about the different types of fish and how to read the weather from the clouds. I learned that the fisherman was very knowledgeable (知识渊博的) about the ocean. He also taught us how to throw a fishing net. It was harder than it looked, but we had a lot of fun trying.
We returned with a few small fish, which we set free back into the water. That afternoon, we flew kites on the beach before heading home.
The trip was short but wonderful. I not only enjoyed the beautiful sights but also learned a lot from the fisherman. It was more than just a vacation. It was a valuable lesson about nature and life.

She always walked around her neighborhood to catch mice. She didn’t lack (缺少) food. When the weather was warm, she could lie in the sun and enjoy a relaxing and happy life.
One day, a girl moved into her neighborhood. She was a kind girl and noticed that Cathy was homeless. Every day she went to and from work and put food around Cathy’s house, an old box. The food was delicious and plentiful. So Cathy didn’t have to go out and catch mice by herself any more. Every day she did nothing and just waited for her delicious food. As time went on, she got fatter and fatter. She couldn’t run very fast. But what did this have to do with her? She had enough food now!
But she didn’t know why this kind girl suddenly moved away one day. Cathy had no more food to eat. At the same time, she was too fat to catch mice. The neighbors complained that there were some mice in the neighborhood. Cathy’s miserable (悲惨的) life began.

In the past ten years, Li Jin, who was born in Guangxi but raised in Sanya, has made efforts to protect the waters of Sanya in Hainan. He is now spreading the knowledge of environmental protection through new media platforms (新媒体平台).
Around 2014, he began doing volunteer work to clear rubbish from the beaches and registered (注册) as a volunteer in May, 2017. Li Jin took the lead in a clean-up activity on the Sanya River.
In April 2021, he used his own money to set up a volunteer service center which has 1,170 registered members who take part in activities without asking for payment. So far, he has spent about 3,800 hours on volunteer activities in over 550 events. More than 2,300 people have joined in the activities with his encouragement. They’ve drawn the attention of both the adults and the children to the importance of protecting the oceans and beaches. Since it was set up, his center has organized 51 beach-cleaning activities that about 1,800 people joined in. In 2021, because of Li’s growing influence in environmental protection circles, the city government invited him to make short videos, in which he used simple words to explain how to protect the environment. “Don’t worry,” Sam replied. “We can work on it at my house after school. I can help you.”

1.第一段指出故事背景:“In science class, Mrs. Evans returned the graded test papers. Jason quickly looked at his paper and sighed (叹息). He failed again. His friend Sam, sitting next to him, smiled at his own high score.”,这直接说明Jason和Sam面临着不同的科学成绩。
2.第六、七段说明原因:“Jason was staring at his textbook, feeling upset. He didn’t want to tell Sam he needed help. ‘Oh, just watching TV,’ Jason lied.” 以及前文Jason拒绝Sam帮助时说的话,可知Jason是因为觉得向Sam求助很尴尬,所以才会说自己能搞定。
3.第二段说明Jason一开始对科学项目的态度:“I think I’m going to do poorly on this one, too.”,表现出他的担心;第七段中“Jason was staring at his textbook, feeling upset.”说明他感到无助;第十一段中“He felt sorry for being rude.”说明他感到后悔;最后一段中“Jason felt a wave of relief (轻松) and pride…”说明他感到轻松。因此,Jason对科学项目的情感变化是:担心—无助—后悔—轻松。
4.最后一段提到“When Mrs. Evans presented the project grades the following week, Jason felt a wave of relief (轻松) and pride…”,由此可合理推测Jason这次可能得到了一个好成绩,比如A,所以B选项“Jason received an A this time.”是可能的结尾。
5.文章中Jason因为骄傲不愿意向Sam求助,后来意识到错误并道歉,最终在Sam的帮助下完成了项目,因此我们可以学到不要让骄傲阻止你寻求帮助。
I realized we only see champions’ medals, not their pressure. Some reach the top only to want a different life.
Even if Amy chooses an ordinary path, she’ll always be special to me.

On the first day of school, Socrates told his students, “Today, we’ll only learn one thing, that is, to stretch (前伸) your arms, and then try to swing (甩动) them back.” He showed them and as a result, all the students laughed. “Sir, is it also learned?” one of the students laughed.
“Of course! You think this is an easy thing, but in fact, it is very difficult,” Socrates answered seriously. Hearing this, all the students laughed even harder.

“She was wearing that apron the day my little brother fell off a rock at the backyard. My mother ran out of the house when she heard him shouting,” remembered Nonnie. “She tore the apron on the rock, but my brother was okay.”
“Nonnie, is there a story behind every piece on this quilt?” asked Tess.

Tom and Jack were best friends. They grew up together in a small coastal (近海的) town. They did everything together—fishing, swimming, and chasing sunsets on the beach.
But when they turned fifteen, Jack’s family had to move to another city. The boys were heartbroken. On Jack’s last day, they went to the beach one final time. “I have an idea,” Tom said. He took out a piece of paper and wrote: “Whoever finds this bottle, please know: Tom and Jack are best friends forever. If you’re reading this, make a wish for our friendship.” He put the paper into an empty glass bottle, sealed (密封) it tightly, and threw it into the sea. “I’ll never forget you,” Jack said, his eyes wet.

He walked alone on the beach, remembering the old days. Suddenly, something shiny caught his eye—a glass bottle half-buried in the sand. He picked it up. Inside was a piece of paper, old and yellow.

1.细节理解题。根据“She worked hard to make herself strong. So she was strong and brave…enjoy a relaxing and happy life.”可知,猫最初是通过自己的辛勤努力工作才过上了舒适的生活。故选A。
2.细节理解题。根据“The neighbors complained that there were some mice in the neighborhood. Cathy’s miserable (悲惨的) life began.”可知,由于Cathy太胖无法抓老鼠,邻居们对社区出现老鼠感到不满并抱怨,因此最后是对猫感到不悦的是邻居们。故选B。
3.词句猜测题。根据“The food was delicious and plentiful. So Cathy didn’t have to go out and catch mice by herself any more.”以及“She had enough food now!”可知,女孩提供的食物不仅美味而且量大,多到猫不再需要自己捕猎。因此可以推断plentiful意为“充足的;丰富的”。Enough意为“足够的”,与之意思最接近。故选C。

Cathy had no more food to eat…Cathy’s miserable (悲惨的) life began.”可知,女孩离开后猫的生活陷入了困境,对应a。因此正确的顺序为b-d-c-a。故选D。
5.主旨大意题。根据文章结尾的总结句“So every one of us should not lose our ability in the easy and comfortable life. Otherwise, we’ll be miserable.”可知,文章通过猫的故事告诉我们,在安逸舒适的生活中不能丢掉生存能力。故选A。

It was just a common Wednesday for Tom, a seventh grader, until unexpected things changed everything.
That morning, Tom hurried to school but suddenly remembered his science project was still on his kitchen table. His heart sank (下沉). He had worked on it for weeks! Just as he was about to cry, his neighbor, Mr. Clark, drove by. “You look worried! Need a ride?” he asked. Thanks to Mr. Clark, Tom got to school just in time with his project.
During lunch break, he found an old lady struggling (挣扎) with heavy bags outside the school. Even though he was hungry, Tom helped her carry the bags home. He was a little late returning to class, but his teacher didn’t scold (责骂) him. Why? The old lady was the headmaster’s mother! He knew why Tom was late. And the headmaster thanked him in front of the whole class.
The biggest surprise came after school. On his way home, Tom saw something shiny near the bus stop—a wallet! Inside, there was some money and a library card with a phone number. He called the number at once. The owner, a college student, came to get it. To thank Tom, she gave him a bookstore gift card she had just bought.
That night, Tom thought about his day. He forgot his project, helped a stranger, and found a lost wallet. Every unexpected event turned into something good. It was a lucky day after all, and it all started with a little kindness and honesty. Tom fell asleep with a big smile.
