I have always loved cold places and being close to nature. I once worked in northern Sweden in the Arctic (北极) winter, with the beautiful northern lights all around me. In some ways, my life there is like my life now—but I’m on the 1 opposite side of the world.
In November 2023, I started working for the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust. My 2 are being the postmaster and the museum manager. Now five of us live together in a small house in Port Lockroy, a place on the west side of the Antarctic peninsula (南极半岛). Besides taking care of the museum, we watch the environment and keep an eye on our 3 —the penguins.
About 1,000 penguins live on the same island with us. Every two days, we 4 their nests, eggs and baby penguins in our area. Then we send this information to the British Antarctic Survey.
Keeping our small house and our lives here 5 a lot of hard work. We don’t have running water, flushing toilets or showers. We also have to dig a lot of snow away. 6 takes more time to do in Antarctica.
As the postmaster, I’m responsible for sorting (分拣) the mail sent here. This is the southernmost post office in the world! In just five weeks, I have 7 20,000 letters. My favorite one was a short note from two kids. They asked many questions about penguins.
My trip to work is the 8 ever. The museum and the post office are only a few steps away from our small house. Every day, I see seals (海豹) on icebergs. I also watch the penguins in all kinds of 9 —sunny days, storms, snowy days and rainy days. There are some new things to get used to—the sun never goes down here, and the penguins make a lot of 10 .
We have a day off every two weeks. On those days, we love 11 long walks around the island. Everything here seems so quiet and still. We notice all the small and lovely things. When seals come onto the island, we can watch them for a long time.
Being in this huge, open place makes me have time to 12 . I realize how small I am in this big world. Sometimes I feel 13 when I see the sun’s light on the water, or when the penguins put the first small stone into their nests.
Life in Antarctica is not easy, but it is 14 fun and surprise. I really love my job here. I will never 15 this special experience.
