Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. With these cars, we wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions. In addition, computers would be better drivers than humans—they would obey the speed limit(限速)and have quicker reaction times when in dangerous situations.
So how do they work? The cars have sensors(感应器)all around which can find other cars and objects on the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking, so the cars know how far it is from the outside of the road or other parked cars. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统)are used, so the cars know how to get where you want to go.All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it gets and works out when to speed up, stop, and turn.
However, there are many problems with driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical(道德的)decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or change the direction suddenly and potentially kill the car's passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun—I'd miss driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made: should children, or people who are drunk be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?
Although being driven around by a machine sounds cool, many people would be put out of a job when driverless cars become common. Bus, taxi and train drivers as well as driving instructors would be made useless. I'm not certain if I'd want a driverless car, but it's only a matter of time before they become cheap to buy and common on our roads.
31. When using a driverless car, you need only _______.
A. read the road signs carefully B. check the cameras
C. put the address into the computer D remember the directions
32. According to the passage, which is a problem brought by driverless cars?
A. They can't follow traffic rules properly.
B. They are too expensive for most people.
C. They might cause people to lose their work.
D. They require drivers to have special licenses.
33. What does the underlined word"potentially" in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Certainly. B. Possibly. C. Hardly. D. Immediately.
34. What is the writer's feeling about driverless cars?
A. Angry and against. B. Careful and uncertain.
C. Supportive and excited. D. Calm and uninterested.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Driverless cars: Just enjoy them
B. Driverless cars: A model of science
C. Driverless cars: Are they your favourite?
D. Driverless cars: Are you ready for them?
