(2025·苏州国裕外语学校月考)Given the ability of AI to imitate humans’ problem-solving ability, it’s not surprising that many people are turning to AI-powered fitness coaches to help them plan exercise routines, track their nutrition and set goals for losing weight.
Sridhar Narayanan, a professor of marketing at Stanford Graduate School of Business, said, “I am interested in weight loss apps. They are less costly than hiring human coaches.By tapping into users’ private health data like goal setting and food intake logs, AI can give guidance to users. However, I am not sure about their effects.Given that weight loss journeys may bring emotions like shame, anxiety and frustration, can technology be as effective as a live person in helping customers in this aspect?”
To find out more, Narayanan compared data from customers who only used weight loss apps with those who used AI paired with human coaches. He found that on average, people using weight loss apps lost about 1.5% of their starting body weight, compared to 2.7% for those with AI-plus-human plans.
“To explain the result, I also looked into the users.Customers who picked human coaching tended to set higher weight loss goals and logged their weight and food intake more frequently.Customers may also feel more responsible for their actions when being supervised (监督) by a live person. It takes more efforts and courage to cancel a training session than to ignore an AI-generated notification on your phone.Being firm and tough may be more effective than offering emotional comforts in terms of being a fitness coach,” Narayanan said.
More research into human coaching versus AI is likely on the horizon.Next, Narayanan will focus on app users who are tracking and getting coaching for serious health issues like diabetes (糖尿病).Finding a way to measure how effectively technology helps customers deal with their overall health could make AI-driven health monitoring more valuable for the tech industry.People are paying more attention to their health while experts in fitness training are rare and lacking. The demand for AI coaching is growing and every technology company is trying very hard to cut a slice of the cake.

(2025·山东临沂郯城美澳联考)Governments around the world are increasingly worried about the effect of using the Internet on young people’s mental health. And studies have shown that spending too much time on screens and social media may increase feelings of anxiety and sadness. However, according to a new study, for older adults, properly using the Internet might bring many benefits and should perhaps be encouraged.
Researchers from Hong Kong investigated the effects of using the Internet on the mental health of adults aged over 50.Data from more than 87,500 people in 23 countries was used in the study. The study found that using the Internet was connected with fewer symptoms (症状) of sadness or depression, greater life satisfaction, and ameliorated self-reported health.
When researchers looked at the data from people in the US, England, and China in a little more detail, they discovered that the increased use of the Internet was connected with better mental health.Interestingly, they found that certain groups of older adults benefited more from the use of the Internet than others. For example, older adults who did fewer social activities or took part in less physical exercise experienced greater positive effects.Similarly, people with disabilities and those with higher education levels also got stronger benefits. The positive effects were stronger among people who used the Internet every day.
The researchers stressed that the Internet can be an excellent place for older adults to learn new things, connect with others, and access important services and information. They described the Internet as a cheap and effective way to improve older adults’ mental health, especially those who live outside towns and cities.
For these individuals, the Internet can make it easier to access resources and social opportunities that may be difficult to reach. This shows that the Internet is not only a tool for communication but also a valuable resource for supporting mental well-being among older populations.

Microsoft greeted the start of a new era for the Internet last night, saying that it would improve its search engine and browser using artificial intelligence. The technology behind the viral ChatGPT service will be integrated into the American software group’s products.
Bing, Microsoft’s search site, and Edge, its online browser (浏览器), would be upgraded to generate everything from recipes and shopping suggestions to draft emails and social media posts in response to inquiries from users, the company said.
Microsoft revealed its plans a day after Google had announced Bard, its own chatbot, and promised further to integrate AI into its search engine. The two companies are racing to dominate AI, betting that it will revolutionise the way in which people gather information online.“Rapid innovation is going to come,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and chief executive of Microsoft.“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all: search.”
Bing would be powered by AI, and the new iteration will answer questions in a similar, conversational fashion to ChatGPT, Microsoft said.It could draft a plan for a trip to Mexico, for example, before estimating the cost and drafting an email setting out the plan for other travellers, in response to follow-up inquiries.Other queries suggested by Microsoft included whether an IKEA loveseat would fit into a 2019 Honda Odyssey and what an electronic music fan’s first festival should be.
A panel in the company’s Edge browser will be able to compose messages or social media posts for users, based on commands regarding content, tone, format and length.
Analysts have suggested that AI could transform online search and could pose a serious threat to Google, the market leader.Bing is trying to overtake Google after enduring years in its shadow.Google, which is owned by Alphabet, once claimed that the most searched-for term on Bing was “Google”.
9.How would Microsoft update its products?( )
