A As technology makes communication easier and quicker, handwritten letters are nearly a thing of the past. But it is making a comeback on Feng Shengji’s desk. The 34-year-old from Chengdu started an online letter-writing business in February last year, writing and mailing hundreds of letters on behalf of others. She has written letters of appreciation, apologies for wrongdoings, love letters and breakup letters. Her story has spread on social media, triggering wide discussion on the lost art of letter writing. It has been viewed more than 14 million times on Sina Weibo. The idea of writing letters for others came when Feng tried to draw and write on her iPad to beat boredom during COVID-19.Then,she opened an online store for letter writing. Up till last month, she worked for a local design company in the day,and worked on her online business as a letter writer at night. In mid-March last year,a doctor from Sichuan became her first client. He was assigned to help fight COVID-19 in Wuhan during the 76-day lockdown. The doctor contacted Feng to help him write thank-you letters to the Wuhan Red Cross Hospital and the hotel he stayed in for their care and support during his time in Wuhan. As mailing services were stopped during the lockdown,Feng wrote the letters on her iPad and emailed the letters.“I told him that I wanted to write the letters free of charge, but he insisted on paying.” Feng recounts. Since then, her business has taken off. Up to now,she has written more than 700 letters, with each letter ranging from dozens of words to thousands. Depending on the length of the letters, each letter can cost from dozens of yuan to less than 100 yuan. “Letter writing is a meaningful thing, and I want to make it into a lifetime career.” says Feng, smiling. She resigned from her design job and became a full-time letter writer from June. 1.Which can we infer from the passage? I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is talk with someone, especially someone new. Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people? Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time? Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble? Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people. Nowadays,we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us. Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t actually believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is,as I said before,a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another,it is too tiring. But meeting new people is important. Life is too short,so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and a smile is worth a lot. 5.What do we learn about the author? A.They rely on the Internet to socialize. B.They are less confident about themselves. C.They have difficulty in communicating. D.They are unwilling to make new friends. A.They think it is troublesome. B.They are busy with their study. C.They fear to disappoint their old friends. D.They want to take time to do meaningful work . 根据倒数第二段“Holding a conversation with someone new... it is too tiring.” A。] 8.Why does the author write the text? A.To tell about the importance of friends. B.To give tips on how to meet new people. C.To encourage people to meet new people. D.To introduce the disadvantages of Generation Y. C 根据最后一段“But meeting new people is important... ”可推断,作者写这篇文章是为了鼓励人们结识新人。故选C。] Ⅱ.阅读七选五 (2021·湖南衡阳八中高二上月考) Look for Friendship in Cyberspace In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship,or even love. 1 Identity (身份) and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. Rather,a person’s thoughts—or at least the thoughts they type—are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star. 2 They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail miserably. 3 Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way. But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. 4 And they don’t have to worry about what their “nonverbal” communication is doing for their image. In a sense, they’re not really themselves. 5 But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns,it’s easy to let one’s imagination fill in the blanks. This leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different than the real person. So,before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll:“Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.” A.Supporters of online relationships claim that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other intellectually first. B.Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen. C.All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. D.Police can help us to identify the one we want to know. E.However, some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. F.Gamers get a lot fun in cyberspace. G.That is because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them. 1.B [根据上文“In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors... look for friendship,or even love.”说明,有许多人活跃在网络世界里,设空处承上启下,下文“Identity and appearance mean very little... ”指出在网络空间中真正重要的是人们通过文字表达的想法。B项符合文意,承上启下。故选B项。] 2.E [根据下文“They’re looking for serious love relationships.” 3.A [根据下文“But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace.” 故选A项。] 4.G [根据上文“no one can truly know another person in cyberspace.” 再根据下文“And they don’t have to worry about... not really themselves.” Nowadays, cellphones play a big part in our life.
