Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage, and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket. It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors.
However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench. After ruling out unsuitable options from local stores, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived. Excitedly, she opened the box and started putting it together. We proudly highfived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to look like one. After a few minutes’ assistance from a neighbour, it was assembled. What’s more, it was ideal for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.
Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna shouted back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想)”, adding yet another name.
Last fall, with the temperature falling, our outdoor days come to an end. We were faced with one dilemma — what to do about it in the winter? Well, we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put it in Donna’s garage for the winter.
When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbours are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives.
24.Donna decided to replace the chair and bucket to ________.
A.lighten the carrying load B.attract more neighbours
C.get better seating for conversations D.adapt to warmer weather
25.How did the bench get its various names?
A.From items placed on it. B.From seasonal discussions.
C.From Donna’s creative ideas. D.From users’ activities on it.
26.Why are pots and boxes mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To suggest the flowers would soon be planted.
B.To describe the bench’s practical use in winter.
C.To show the bench was not serving its purpose.
D.To explain why the bench needed winter storage.
27.What does “The Bench” represent by the end of the story?
A.A symbol of community bonds. B.A marker of individual free time.
C.A reminder of the past summer. D.A memory of a valued online order.
【答案】24.C 25.D 26.C 27.A
根据第二段中“However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench.(然而,在接下来的几天里,我们发现椅子和桶坐起来并不舒服,这些远远不够。唐娜决定我们需要一张长椅)”以及第二段末句“What’s more, it was ideal for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.(此外,这张长椅非常适合两个七十多岁的人在傍晚继续聊天)”可知,换掉座椅是为了获得更舒适的、适合聊天的座位。故选C。
根据第三段内容“Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna shouted back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved—after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating”, adding yet another name.(很快,这张长椅吸引了其他邻居。
根据末段首句“When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes.(在接下来的几个月里,我几次瞥见这张长椅,它孤零零地待在那里,上面放着空花盆和一些扁平的旧箱子)”可知,长椅冬日里沦为摆放杂物的工具,不再发挥其原本的作用。
根据首段“Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage, and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket. It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors.(去年春天,我和邻居唐娜都已年过七旬,我们在明媚的阳光下待了好几个小时,惬意迎接这崭新的季节。到了坐下歇息的时候,唐娜从车库搬出她那把红色的金属椅子,我则坐在一个倒扣的塑料桶上。聊着我俩在漫长冬日里宅家错过的家长里短,这样的时光别提多惬意了)”、第三段内容“Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna shouted back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved—after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating”, adding yet another name.(很快,这张长椅吸引了其他邻居。 故选A。
C
Despite the well-known benefits for children’s health, one in ten parents of preschoolers say that their children play outside just once a week or less. This is the finding of a survey of 710 parents of children aged 1 to 5, conducted in August by researchers from the University of Michigan Health C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital.
The survey showed that outdoor and imaginative play remain common, but screen-based activities are quickly catching up as a daily fixture of children’s lives. Nearly one-third of parents surveyed reported that their children regularly take part in “media play”, such as video games, while three in five said their children watch videos every day.
“Outdoor play is essential for young children’s learning and development,” said Sarah Clark, co-director of the survey. “Our report suggests that many families could support healthier development by encouraging a wider variety of play experiences. For example, parents could take their children to the park before shopping or use a short walk to play a game with jumping.”
The survey also pointed out that digital activities have become a common part of children’s daily lives. Most parents of preschoolers admitted (承认) that they often hand a phone or tablet to their children in the car, at restaurants or in public places when they would like them to be occupied (忙碌). While phones and tablets are convenient, Clark suggested other options, such as setting up a “quiet kit” with fun books, or small toys that children can use when on the go.
Additionally, the survey found that parental anxiety plays a role in limiting (限制) outdoor play. Four out of ten parents said they feel nervous when their children go too far or climb too high. While safety concerns are understandable, Clark stressed that a little independence helps children grow, encouraging curiosity and creativity. “Outdoor play doesn’t need to be perfect or educational to be beneficial,” she added. “Parents just need to make time and space for their children to play freely.”
28.What is the percentage of parents surveyed saying their children watch videos daily?
A.33%. B.40%. C.50%. D.60%.
29.What does the underlined word “essential” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Harmful. B.Important. C.Challenging. D.Responsible.
30.What is probably Clark’s suggestion for parents?
A.Let children lead their own play. B.Allow children to play in groups.
C.Set up more screen time activities. D.Limit playtime for safety reasons.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Parents’ Role in Children’s Screen Time B.The Influence of Digital Games on Students
C.Preschoolers: More Outdoors, Less Screens D.Outdoor Games: A Growing Sense of Unease
【答案】28.D 29.B 30.A 31.C
根据第二段中“Nearly one-third of parents surveyed reported that their children regularly take part in “media play”, such as video games, while three in five said their children watch videos every day.(近三分之一的受访家长表示,他们的孩子经常参与“媒体游戏”,比如电子游戏,五分之三的家长表示,他们的孩子每天都看视频)”可知,有60%的受访家长表示他们的孩子每天都看视频。故选D。
根据画线词后“Our report suggests that many families could support healthier development by encouraging a wider variety of play experiences. For example, parents could take their children to the park before shopping or use a short walk to play a game with jumping.(我们的报告表明,许多家庭可以通过鼓励更广泛的游戏体验来支持更健康的发展。例如,父母可以在购物前带孩子去公园,或者利用一小段散步时间玩跳跃游戏)”可推断,画线词所在句意为“户外游戏对幼儿的学习和发展至关重要”,画线词意为“至关重要的”,与Important的意思最接近。故选B。
30.推理判断题。根据最后一段“While safety concerns are understandable, Clark stressed that a little independence helps children grow, encouraging curiosity and creativity. “Outdoor play doesn’t need to be perfect or educational to be beneficial,” she added. “Parents just need to make time and space for their children to play freely.”(虽然安全问题是可以理解的,但Clark强调,一点独立有助于孩子成长,鼓励好奇心和创造力。她补充说:“户外游戏并不需要完美或有教育意义才有益。”“父母只需要腾出时间和空间让孩子自由玩耍。”)”可推断,Clark主张让孩子自由、自主地玩耍。故选A。
总览全文核心内容,尤其是第一段“Despite the well-known benefits for children’s health, one in ten parents of preschoolers say that their children play outside just once a week or less.(尽管户外活动对孩子的健康有众所周知的好处,但十分之一的学龄前儿童家长表示,他们的孩子每周只在户外活动一次或更少)”及最后一段中““Outdoor play doesn’t need to be perfect or educational to be beneficial,” she added. “Parents just need to make time and space for their children to play freely.”(“户外游戏并不需要完美或有教育意义才有益。”她补充说。“父母只需要腾出时间和空间让孩子自由玩耍。”)”可知,密歇根大学Health C. S. Mott儿童医院的一项调查显示学龄前儿童观看视频时间增多,户外活动时间减少,指出父母应鼓励孩子多参与户外活动以促进其健康发展。由此可知,C项“学龄前儿童:多户外活动,少屏幕”能够体现语篇的主旨,适合作本文标题。故选C。
D
Have you wondered how your body knows when to wake up or why you need to go to the toilet less at night? Circadian rhythms use the sun to help your body to run on time.
“Circadian rhythms” is another name for body clocks. They are controlled by a small part of the brain called the hypothalamus (下丘脑) and they let the body know when to do things like eat, sleep and go to the toilet. Circadian rhythms repeat every 24 hours and almost every living thing has them. They tell animals the best time to hunt, for example, and plants when to flower. Circadian rhythms are influenced by light. When the sun shines through the window in the morning your body clock tells you it’s time to wake up. When it’s dark your body feels sleepy.
Good-quality sleep lets your brain recharge and replace important hormones (荷尔蒙) to keep you healthy. Not listening to your body clock, such as going to bed late, can mess with your sleep cycle and make you feel tired and easy to get angry the next day. Circadian rhythms also affect energy, digestion (消化) and body temperature. In fact, scientists have found that they help our whole body run smoothly. Swathi Yadlapalli is a scientist who studies how people grow and develop. She says, “Almost every part in the human body has a circadian clock.”
Circadian rhythms are written into people’s genes (基因), which are the body's instructions for how to develop and grow. We can’t change them but we can listen to what they are telling us. The Sleep Charity, which helps people to sleep better, recommends sticking to regular sleep patterns. So whether you are used to staying up late, or getting up early, try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. It also suggests getting lots of natural light in the morning. Even if the sky is cloudy and grey, the natural light can reset your body clock and make you feel more awake.
32.Which part of the brain controls circadian rhythms?
A.The hormone system. B.The hypothalamus. C.The digestive system. D.The gene center.
33.What is the function of circadian rhythms?
A.They help plants get sunlight more easily.
B.They regulate the hypothalamus to work faster.
C.They control the movement of main parts in the body.
D.They tell living things when to perform certain activities.
34.What can be inferred about natural light?
A.It makes people feel sleepy at night.
B.It has no effect on hormone production.
C.It sometimes influences circadian rhythms greatly.
D.It helps reset the body clock even on cloudy days.
35.What does the author suggest doing?
A.Stopping staying up too late. B.Getting up early the next day.
C.Having a fixed sleep routine daily. D.Listening to music before sleeping.
根据第二段中的“They are controlled by a small part of the brain called the hypothalamus and they let the body when to do things like eat, sleep and go to the toilet.(它们由大脑中一个名为下丘脑的小部分控制,让身体知道何时该进行进食、睡觉、上厕所等活动)”可知,控制昼夜节律的是大脑中的下丘脑。故选B项。
根据第二段中的“They tell animals the best time to hunt, for example, and plants when to flower.(例如,它们会告诉动物最佳的捕猎时间,告诉植物何时开花)”可知,昼夜节律的作用是告知生物何时进行特定活动。故选D项。
根据第四段中的“Even if the sky is cloudy and grey, the natural light can reset your body clock and make you feel more awake.(即使天空阴沉多云,自然光也能重置你的生物钟,让你感觉更清醒)”可知,即使在阴天,自然光依然能发挥重置生物钟的作用,由此可推断自然光有时对昼夜节律影响很大。故选C项。
根据第四段中的“The Sleep Charity, which helps people to sleep better, recommends sticking to regular sleep patterns. So whether you are used to staying up late, or getting up early, try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day.(致力于帮助人们改善睡眠的睡眠慈善机构建议保持规律的睡眠模式。

故填was held。

故填more intelligent。

When we arrived at the amusement park in southern California after a ninety-minute drive, we discovered that the gates were closed and locked. We knew that wildfires had been burning all over the area, but none were near our destination. We’d saved for long so we could afford a trip to this amusement park that the kids had been begging to visit. But smoke blown in from the fires made it dangerous for visitors.
I now had to explain to four disappointed children that the highlight of the trip we had planned for weeks was canceled (取消). It had already been a hard year. My nine-year-old son had been diagnosed (诊断) with heart disease and my husband was out of work for months.
We were living on a tight budget when our cousin announced she was getting married in southern California. Nevertheless, we wanted to celebrate with her, so we began to plan how we could pull off the trip. We’d drive, stay with family, and use discount tickets to go to the amusement park the day after the wedding.
Now, we had to brainstorm what to do with a van (面包车) full of sad children. The new theme park was out of reach financially, but outside its gate was a massive toy store. We decided to take the children there and let them pick out some toys to take home. They could spend as much time as they wanted exploring the store.
Driving another ninety minutes on the freeway, we could see the clear sky, with smells of smoke still in it. Arriving outside the theme park, the kids were excited to shop. It was half past one in the afternoon. Standing in front of the store, I noticed several couples in wedding dresses walking out of the park after their wedding ceremonies.
My sister Cindy’s phone rang. It was our mother in Minnesota, wondering how we were dealing with all the fires around us. We went outside to take the call. Cindy was updating our mother about our changed plans when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Another tourist had overhead the conversation.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
The woman, Patty, said she had free tickets to the park for us.

Anyone who has visited theme parks knows how long the lines are, but that day was different.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The woman, Patty, said she had free tickets to the park for us. She explained that her family had planned to visit but canceled due to an emergency. The tickets were valid for one more day and nonrefundable, so she wanted to gift them to someone who could use them. We hesitated at first, unsure about safety, but Patty assured us the air quality inside was fine. Grateful for her kindness, we accepted. The kids’ faces lit up as we entered the park, their earlier disappointment melting away.
Anyone who has visited theme parks knows how long the lines are, but that day was different. With few visitors, we walked straight onto rides that usually required hours of waiting. The kids laughed and screamed on roller coasters, even my nine-year-old son joined in gentle rides despite his condition. As the sun set, painting the sky orange, I realized this twist turned a disappointing day into something magical. Kindness can truly transform lives, and this experience became a cherished memory none of us would ever forget.
