Passage 1
(24-25高一下·马鞍山二中·期中)
The whole class was busy preparing for the end-of-year play under the guidance of Miss Tompkins, their enthusiastic drama teacher. The excitement was clear as the students worked hard to perfect every scene and every line. The play was a fantasy tale about a magical key that could unlock a hidden world.
David, who was in charge of the sound effects, took his job seriously. He loved how each sound brought the story to life, making his classmates’ performances even better. He worked hard during rehearsals (排练), paying close attention to the actors and actresses as they spoke their lines, and he repeated them in his head. He also noted the action cues (提示) carefully in order to make the right sound effect at the perfect moment.
Everything was going smoothly until, just two days before the performance, David came home with bad news. “Grandad, Anthony broke his arm while practicing his bike jump on his way home.”
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.”
“He’ll make a full recovery. But by losing Anthony, we now don’t have a main character, the Key-master. Miss Tompkins says we might have to cancel the play. You know, after all that hard work, rehearsals, artwork, lights...”
David and Grandad fell silent, thinking about the situation.
After a few minutes, Grandad broke the silence, “I know —” he said. “Each evening that you’ve come back from rehearsals, you always recite the lines. You must know them all by now. Why don’t you play the Key-master?”
“Because I can’t do it.” “How do you know unless you try? It doesn’t matter how well you do, as everyone will be on your side and cheer you on.” “Yeah. Maybe I should give it a go,” David said.
The next day, David told Miss Tompkins about his idea. “Well, David, that’s fantastic!” Miss Tompkins smiled. “And I will take over sound effect responsibilities.”

Passage 2
(24-25高一下·安庆二中·期中)
Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Wherever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her desk mate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids' group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti(意大利面)”. Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn't really like it when the kids chanted“ Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop, either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather's for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What's the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking(啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped(捧起) the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body.
Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates.

“Hey, guys, that's enough!” Catherine's voice was firm and loud.

Passage 3
(24-25高一下·安徽培优联盟·期中)
Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four directions, learning to classrooms, laboratories and teachers’ offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria and a gym.
Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn’t exist.
In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfather’s, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car!
When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. “It’s just the beginning,” she thought. “I’ll come in last for sure.”
Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word “mile”. Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved (拐弯). After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. One lap turned into two, then three, then four.

Passage 4
(23-24高一下·安徽·期中)
The paper on my desk was yellow, with straight blue lines stretching across it. The lines repeated themselves all the way down the page. I counted them. Twenty-six straight lines ran across the paper. The yellow color reminded me of sunshine. In summer, the sun is bright yellow like that, and sky is blue like those lines. I loved blue-blue is for getting lost in…
“You haven’t written a word yet, have you?” Miss Perry had found me out. I hung my head, as in past years, and gave her the lines I had given to previous teachers.
“I don’t feel like it.”
The truth was that I wanted to write about something different. “Write about Your Best Friend,” demanded the assignment on the board. I didn’t have a best friend. I had a few friends, but I didn’t want to claim any of them as my “best”, because I was afraid they might pick someone else. What if I picked a “best” friend and then someone different, who thought I was their best friend, heard my paragraph read aloud and never spoke to me again? It was a stupid topic. I was disappointed in Miss Perry for choosing it.
I knew Miss Perry must have heard about me from my other teachers. I had already prepared myself for another year of listening to teachers scold me. I was only nine years old, but my ears had been full to the voices of my elders. My teachers, my parents and the school principal had all given me the speech “What are we supposed to do with you?”. That was probably what Miss Perry was about to say, too.

Passage 5
(24-25高一下·皖南八校·期中)
I’ve never been a self-confident boy. In class, even when I knew the answer perfectly, I would lower my head, afraid to catch the teacher’s eye. Group discussions were a living nightmare (噩梦), as I was convinced that my ideas were never good enough. This lack of confidence had deeply affected my life in various aspects.
One day, my English teacher, Mr. Smith, announced a school-wide English speech contest. Everyone was encouraged to take part. I was filled with fear at the thought of standing on stage in front of so many people. But Mr. Smith, with his sharp eye, seemed to have noticed my hesitation. He came to me after class and said sincerely, “Tom, I think you have great potential. This could be a chance for you to shine.” His words gently planted a small seed of hope in my heart.
I decided to give it a try. I spent days writing my speech, carefully choosing every single word. Then came the practice. When I stood in front of the mirror, my hands would shake. But I didn’t give up. I practiced day and night, each time a little more bravely.
Finally, the day of the contest arrived. As I stepped onto the stage, my heart was pounding so hard that I could hear it in my ears. The audience seemed like a vast ocean of eyes, all staring at me. For a moment, I froze, my mind going blank. But then, I remembered Mr. Smith's words and all the hard work I had put in. I took a deep breath and began to speak.
At first, my voice was soft, but as I gradually got into the rhythm (节奏) of my speech, it grew stronger and more confident. I poured my heart and soul into every sentence, sharing my story sincerely. When I finished, there was a moment of silence, and then thunderous applause (雷鸣般的掌声) filled the hall. I had done it!

主题02 友情
Passage 1
(24-25高一下·淮南二中·期中)
Sarah and Mia’s friendship blossomed the moment they met each other in the school art club. Their friendship was a beautiful combination of creativity and understanding. They spent countless hours together, painting, drawing, and sharing their dreams of becoming famous artists one day.
However, a school-wide art exhibition (展览) was approaching, threatening to put their friendship to a tough test. This exhibition was no ordinary event. It was a grand showcase, and the winning artworks would be exhibited at the well-known local art gallery for an entire month. Given their extraordinary talent, both Sarah and Mia were determined to win.
As the preparations for the exhibition began, they started to drift apart (渐行渐远). Sarah began to notice that Mia was becoming increasingly secretive. Mia would lock herself in her room for hours on end, leaving Sarah in the dark about her creative process. Whenever Sarah asked to see her work in progress, Mia would find an excuse to refuse. This behavior left Sarah feeling deeply hurt. She had always been an open book with Mia, sharing every sketch, every raw idea, believing that their friendship was based on trust and openness.
On the day of handing in the artworks, the tension reached its peak (顶峰). Sarah met Mia in the art room. “Why have you been acting so strange? We used to share everything, but now you’re shutting me out!” Sarah exclaimed, her voice filled with hurt. Mia looked away, avoiding Sarah’s eyes. “I just ... I want to win this so badly. I thought if I worked alone, I’d have a better chance, ” she mumbled. Just then, the art teacher walked in, ready to collect the artworks, and the situation seemed tenser than ever.

Passage 1
(24-25高一下·安徽滁州·期中)
I was walking to our local pharmacy (药房) when I suddenly remembered I needed to buy a special type of cat food from the vet (兽医) for my daughter’s cat. She couldn’t afford to pay for the expensive food so I had to pay for it. To be honest, paying $300 a month for the cat food made me feel stressed.
When I entered the vet hospital, the vet helper was helping another customer. She knew what kind of cat food I needed to buy and asked if I wanted a partial case (半箱) or a full case. Thinking I was always busy, I decided to buy a full one.
Just then another new customer hurried in and rushed to the front of the vet helper. The vet helper asked him to wait after me. Since I wasn’t in a hurry, I told the helper to serve the gentleman first. I could go to the pharmacy and give them time to do the paperwork while I was gone.
The helper said, “Thanks, that would be great!”
The gentleman said sorry for his cutting in the line just now because of something important to do, and said, “You should go first— you were here before me.”
“No worries, you go right ahead. My pleasure,” I said.
He jokingly replied, “Wow, how can I thank you?”

Passage 2
(24-25高一下·合肥八中·期中)
Cookies for Forgiveness
Last week, a U-Haul truck pulled up across the street, and a college student unloaded a Ping-Pong table onto his front lawn. To most, it might seem harmless, but to me, it was a trigger. In my town, a Ping-Pong table on a lawn isn’t just for games — it’s a beer-pong table, a symbol of late-night noise and chaos. Years ago, my husband and I lived near the university, surrounded by students who turned beer pong into a lifestyle. The thumping bass and laughter kept us awake night after night. We eventually moved to a quieter neighborhood, at great expense, to escape it.
So, when I saw that table, memories of those sleepless nights flooded back. Anger bubbled up inside me, hot and uncontrollable. I marched over, past the table, and knocked on the student’s door. I demanded he remove it, expecting him to apologize. Instead, he met my rage with defiance. “Who are you to tell me what to do?” he shot back. His words only fueled my fury. I yelled things I didn’t mean, my voice sharp with profanity (脏话). My husband, sensing trouble, pulled me away before things escalated further.
The rest of the day, I seethed (强忍怒火). But by morning, shame replaced anger. I shuddered as I replayed the confrontation in my mind. Why couldn’t I keep my cool? Why did I let something so trivial ignite me? I’ve always struggled with anger — it runs in my family — but I’ve worked hard to change. Therapy, meditation, journaling—I’ve tried them all. Yet, there I was, yelling at a stranger over a Ping-Pong table. I knew I had to make it right.
I turned to what I do best: baking. I pulled out a batch of frozen peanut butter chocolate chunk cookie dough I’d made weeks earlier. The dough balls were my secret weapon, ready to transform into warm, comforting cookies at a moment’s notice. As the cookies baked, the house filled with their sweet, buttery aroma. I let them cool, then arranged them on a plate, my hands trembling.

Passage 3
(24-25高一下·合肥六中·期中)
A woman named Therese Ojibway often took her son to the wilderness to explore nature.
One day, they had a usual walk in the woods. The sun shone brightly, and little Jaden held his mother’s hand tightly.
“Mommy, look at the trees! They’re so tall and green!” Jaden cried, pointing upwards with excitement. Ojibway smiled warmly, and her eyes were full of love. “Yes, my dear. This is your safe haven, where you can be yourself and explore all the wonders nature has to offer.”
As they walked deeper into the woods, Jaden’s curiosity grew. He stopped to play with the grass in a while and sometimes looked up into the sky carefully. Watching this, Ojibway felt a relief because only in the woods could Jaden behave freely and open his heart. When Jaden saw butterflies flying from flower to flower, his face lit up with joy. “Mommy, they are so beautiful! Can I catch one?” he asked innocently.
Ojibway looked at Jaden, saying, “Mommy also thinks they are very beautiful. Let’s just watch them dance, OK?” Jaden nodded thoughtfully, watching the butterflies quietly.
As they continued their walk, Jaden spotted something fluttering (拍打) weakly on the ground. It was a butterfly, whose wings were wet and stuck together, unable to fly. “Mommy, the butterfly is hurt! Can we help it?” Jaden asked worriedly.
Ojibway knelt down beside her son, gently picking up the delicate creature in her hands. “Of course, we can, honey. I think we should do something for it. Let’s find a safe place for it to rest and dry its wings.”
Together, they found a sheltered spot under a large tree, where Ojibway carefully placed the butterfly on a soft leaf. “Now, we just need to be patient and let nature do its work,” she said to Jaden. Jaden sat beside his mother, watching eagerly, with his little hand holding hers.

Passage 4
(23-24高一下·马鞍山二中·期中)
One Sunday, I went shopping gladly in the largest supermarket in my town on my own. My old sister had planned to go with me, but it turned out that she was too busy that Sunday.
As the important festival was just around the corner, the supermarket was packed with people. There were many young girls and ladies who were hanging the handbags loosely (松弛地) over their shoulders. I also did like that. Although my mother always advised that I should hang it carefully over my shoulder, I refused to do so. Although it sometimes made her angry, her advice always fell on deaf ears.
Because the supermarket was selling many things at less than their usual prices, I paid my attention completely to the goods of low prices. I especially concentrated on the clothes with a new design which I wanted to buy for a long time. They were offered at a discount of up to 70%.
This made me not wary (提防的) of my loosely-hanging handbag, inside which was all the pocket money that I had saved for some time. I did not realize that it had attracted the attention of a bad person. He was secretly looking at me but my eyes were fixed on the clothes and I did not see him.
Suddenly, there was a pull on my shoulder. It made me lose the balance of my body, and my arms hit a piece of metal used to hang clothing on. As a result, I had a bad cut. Blood was flowing down from my arm.
After recovering from my shock, I quickly called for help. “Stop him! My handbag! Thief! Thief!” I shouted anxiously, and then, I could not even say a sentence properly. A strong young man — I later learned his name was Jeff — heard my cries for help and made a beeline for the thief, who was running down the stairs.

Passage 1
(23-24高一下·合肥六校联盟·期中)
When I was about four years old, I started washing my face on my own. However, I always ignored the area behind my ears on purpose, though my mom would often remind me.
One summer, in July of that year, my mom drove me to my grandparents’ house for our annual summer holiday visit. When we arrived, I was told that Grandma had gone on a trip with her friends and wouldn’t be back for another two weeks. Feeling a bit down, I went to the yard to play while my mom and grandpa caught up on some things. Although I couldn’t hear their conversation clearly, I had a strong feeling they were talking about me based on their gestures and expressions. Later, my mom returned home, and she would come back to pick me up two months later.
After dinner that night, Grandpa asked me to take a bath before going to bed. Since I loved taking baths, I happily agreed. With the bathtub (浴缸) filled with water, Grandpa reminded me, “Just make sure you clean the area behind your ears really well. You wouldn’t want potatoes to start growing there, would you?”
“Potatoes?” I stopped in my tracks and turned back to look at him. “Yes, potatoes. If you don’t clean the dirt behind your ears, potatoes might actually sprout (发芽) and grow there,” he explained, causing my eyes to widen in surprise. “But I don’t have any potatoes behind my ears, Grandpa,” I said as I ran my fingers along the back of my ears. He took a quick glance and replied, “Oh, I see a couple of sprouts: starting right there!” He urged me to get into the bathtub immediately and scrub (擦洗) them away thoroughly.
I nodded, still in disbelief. This was the first time I had ever heard such a thing. Why hadn’t my parents warned me about this before? I wondered, but couldn’t find an answer. Nonetheless, I felt shocked by Grandpa’s warning.

Passage 2
(23-24高一下·太和中学·期中)
I always think of my mother as a superhero, because she never runs out of room in her heart for anyone or anything.
I could write about all of the wonderful things she has done, but I want to focus on one project she does every year that has shaped my whole family and everyone around us: She saves money, and she puts it in a little jar (罐子) that we refer to as “The Charity Jar”. Every year, she takes this money and puts it toward something—an act of kindness, anything that can help someone. Sometimes, she buys something for an organization that needs it.
If you ask her about this tradition, she will tell you that she is carrying on something that her mother used to do around the holidays. If you ask anyone else who knows her, however, they will tell you that she has a huge heart. She manages to get our whole family involved (参与) in this movement every year. Last year, she helped an organization where I volunteered—Ruth’s Place—a homeless women’s shelter in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
I had been helping a professor run a writing workshop in the shelter when I noticed the wish list on the wall: warm clothes, a coffee maker and supplies. I told my mom, and within a day, she had already asked if our family wanted to help Ruth’s Place. We all agreed and decided that the coffee maker and supplies would be the best things for our family to work on together.
A few days later, Mom found a coffee maker online, and showed it to us. With a few clicks, it was on its way. She also baked(烘焙) fresh chocolate cupcakes for the women in the shelter. We gathered the rest of the supplies and called the shelter to find a day when we could deliver them.

Passage 1
(24-25高一下·安徽阜阳·期中)
I’d been waitressing for months, earning extra money for college. “Since it’s not too busy, go and see if Ray wants any more coffee,” my boss said to me as he pointed to an older man sitting in the corner.
Ray was holding the cup in his hand as he stared out of the window. He was a re gular lunch customer on Mondays and Fridays.
“Can I refill the cup for you, Ray?” I asked. He looked up with a peaceful smile and held his cup out toward me. “You know, I’ve been coming here for several years, and I have to say you have the nicest smile,” he whispered. “Can you sit for minutes... please?”
I sat down and he smiled, “Your smile reminds me of my granddaughter, Sharon.” He took out a picture of her from his wall et and handed it to me. “She graduated from college last year.”
“What a nice-looking girl!” I said. “Does she live near you?”
Ray shook his head as he put the picture back in his wallet. “She moved to California last year. I miss her a lot. She and I used to have lunch together on Monday s and Fridays,” he said. “She now wants me to move out there to be closer to her.”
“So, why don’t you?”
“I don’t know if I really want to move. I’ve been here all my life,” he answered.
I heard my boss calling me. “I guess that’s meant for me,” I said as I stood up.
We smiled at each other. “Ray……if my grandfather had been like you, I’d have asked him day and night to move closer to me, too.” I patted his shoulder. “Don’t wait too long. Nice talking with you...”

Passage 2
(23-24高一下·江淮名校·期中)
Mark was a 11-year-old boy. One day he was selling magazines for his school fees, walking up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glared at(怒视) them. It was said that the old man’s name was Henry.
Mark knocked on the door and waited, sweating due to fear of the old man. Mark’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of other neighborhood children were told the same thing by their parents.
Dusk found Mark wandering and hesitating(犹豫) what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened: “Why are you standing here?” the old man Henry said impatiently. Mark was very afraid but he had to sell a certain number of magazines for his school fees... So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and, uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”
Henry just stared at Mark without saying a word. Mark could see that Henry had dog figurines(小雕像) on the shelves inside his house. “Do you collect dog figurines?” Mark asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” Mark then felt sorry for Henry, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” Henry was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”
Mark was sad that he was not going to achieve his goal of selling a certain number of magazines. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. Mark went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he had got some years before from an aunt. The figurine did not mean so much to him since he had a real living dog and a large family.

Passage 3
(23-24高一下·安徽宿州·期中)
Eric was a very honest and hardworking student. He had entered a new school recently, so he had no friends yet. One Monday morning, he was nearly late for school because his family attended a wedding and reached home late the night before. Hurriedly, he even had no time for breakfast.
At school, Eric was starving to death and could not concentrate on anything but wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Eric quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, only to find that he had forgotten to take money since he was in such a hurry in the morning. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but in vain.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on the grassland in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among whom was Henry. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very rude boy who regarded everyone else as a failure. But Eric was a newcomer, he didn’t know much about Henry.
When he approached Henry and asked whether he could borrow some money for his lunch, Henry laughed at once and said, “I didn’t know you were a loser, maybe a beggar?” Henry laughed out so loud that other kids also made fun of Eric. Embarrassed and angry, Eric said nothing and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he saw something lying under it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it belonged to Henry, as he remembered Henry showing it to his friends and telling them that his uncle had bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

Passage 4
(23-24高一下·安庆二中·期中)
As Mom and I stood in line waiting to cash out at the store, I studied the customer in front of us who was reading the magazines to our left. She was young, maybe early twenties, but she already had a tired look with a slight stoop (驼背).
The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat and meal like pasta, rice, and potatoes. Day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo completed her purchases, well, almost. In the corner sat a toy car and a pretty dress that was 50 percent off. She continued to look at the magazines as we waited, and more people lined up behind us. She turned around and asked Mom for help.
“I’m sorry to bother you,” she began shyly. “But can you tell me how much this is? I forgot my glasses at home.”
“Of course,” Mom said.
When Mom finally found the small print and told her, she sighed quietly and put it back.
“They’ve become so expensive, haven’t they?” Mom said in a low voice.
“Next!” The cashier called and she moved forward.
When the store employee finally added up everything and told her the cost, the woman’s face paled. It was obvious that she didn’t have enough money, and she scanned her items to see what she could do without.
One by one, she removed things, but she still came up short. She continued to take much-needed goods out while the cashier patiently deducted (扣除) things with a pleasant smile.
The child’s items remained in the cart, however. In fact, the palm of her other hand lay protectively across them, as if she didn’t want to give in.
The woman finally paid, and moved down to bag them.
When our turn came, Mom pointed to the pile of items the woman had taken out, added all our meat and fresh milk, and whispered “Separate bags, same bill please” to the cashier. She nodded, even though it was a “pack your own” kind of store.

Passage 5
(23-24高一下·安徽安庆·期中)
It was summer. My dad finally decided to take me on a special trip to Inner Mongolia that day, which made me excited.
We took a plane to Hohhot, the provincial capital of Inner Mongolia. The moment we got off the plane in the late afternoon, we saw Uncle Zhang, a farmer whose house we had booked, welcoming us over there. He picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm.
His wife, Aunt Liu cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his family. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the birds singing in the grasslands. Very early in the morning, Uncle Zhang woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, my dad began to ride horses with Uncle Zhang.
In the afternoon, Uncle Zhang wondered if I would take a horse ride. I said I would if my dad accompanied me. So, my dad and I got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the distance. Soon after, Uncle Zhang’s farm was out of sight behind.
After a long period, we stopped our horses, and began to enjoy the beautiful green grassland ahead. The cool wind was slightly blowing our face. Once in a while we could still hear some birds sing in the woods nearby. It was so peaceful and quiet. I had never been so relaxed before.

Passage 6
(23-24高一下·安徽安庆·期中)
Mrs. Johnson was an elderly woman who loved nothing more than sitting by the window and watching the world go by. She had lived in the same house for over 50 years and knew almost everyone in the neighborhood. She especially liked the teenagers who lived next door, a group of kids who always seemed to be up to something.
One day, Mrs. Johnson noticed that the kids seemed to be going through a tough time. They were skipping school, getting into trouble, and seemed lost and directionless. Mrs. Johnson knew that something needed to be done to help these kids, so she decided to take action.
The first thing she did was to invite the kids over for cookies and drinks. They were hesitant at first, but Mrs. Johnson’s warm smile and kind words quickly put them at ease. Over the course of the afternoon, she listened carefully as the kids shared their hopes and dreams, their fears and frustrations. She didn’t judge them or lecture them, but simply offered a listening ea r and a shoulder to lean on.
As the weeks went by, Mrs. Johnson continued to reach out to the kids. She would invite them over for dinner or take them on outings to the park, the library, or the movies. She would encourage them to talk about their interests and talents, and help them find their passions, set goals, and pursue their dreams. Mrs. Johnson became a guiding light for the neighborhood kids.
One of the kids, a boy named David, was particularly talented in music. He had a natural gift for playing the guitar and writing songs, but had never been given the chance to pursue his passion. Mrs. Johnson knew that David’s genius for music was too great to go unnoticed, so she took it upon herself to help David find a way to share his talent with the world.

【答案】 David practiced hard before the performance. Despite his initial self-doubts, he threw himself into learning the lines and the movements of the Key-master with a fierce determination. He spent hours in front of the mirror, rehearsing his expressions and gestures, making sure they were in sync with the character’s emotions. His classmates noticed the change and gathered around him, offering support and encouragement. They ran through the scenes together, refining the interactions between David and the other characters. The entire class felt a renewed sense of unity and purpose, working tirelessly to ensure the play’s success.
At the close of the performance, Miss Tompkins took the stage to congratulate everyone. The audience broke into applause as the curtain fell, and the students cheered with pride at their achievement. David received a special round of applause for his unexpected but outstanding performance as the Key-master. Miss Tompkins praised the hard work and teamwork that had brought the play to life. As the players took their bows, they were excited to know that the experience had not only taught them about drama but also about the power of importance of community spirit.

【答案】Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. The image of the small, scared chicken in her arms overlapped with the image of Landy's face turning red with embarrassment every time the kids teased her. Catherine realized that Landy was just like this poor chicken, being pecked at for being different. Catherine decided she needed to do something about it. Back at school on Monday, when she heard the familiar chant of“ Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti,” she didn't stay silent. Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward and faced the chanting crowd.
“Hey, guys, that's enough!” Catherine's voice was firm and loud. “It's not funny to make fun of someone just because they're different. It hurts, and it's not fair.” The kids looked at each other, a bit embarrassed and unsure of what to do next. Catherine walked to ward Landy and invited her to lunch. Landy looked up, surprise and relief flooding her face. As they walked to lunch together, Catherine knew she had done the right thing. Slowly but surely, the other kids began to follow her example, realizing that being kind and inclusive was much cooler than being popular at the expense of others.

【答案】参考范文
When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. Never in her wildest dream had she imagined that she could achieve such an eye-catching score! Conquering this one mile was a milestone in her running career! Amazingly, Coach Pitts’ positive recognition installed an enormous sense of achievement into her heart. Enthusiastic cheers and thunderous applauses from her classmates kept her on the top of the world. Breathless and exhausted, she realized that overcoming seemingly the toughest challenges just needed a smart strategy like her mind trick. Her initial self-doubt gave way to self-confidence. Being a freshman, she tended to get lost in the 6-story maze, leaving her so helpless. Staring at the towering teaching building, Eva came up with a good idea, with a smile blooming across her face.
Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. No sooner had she returned to the confusing maze than she set out to explore the first floor. Convinced that her mind trick would locate her in the school as soon as possible, she came to a gym, which was well-equipped with various workout facilities. Next to the gym was a cafeteria, which provided a wide range of foods and drinks. As Eva walked back to her classroom, she noticed that she felt less overwhelmed by this huge complex. Time ticking away, Eva eventually got familiar with the vast maze in the way she finished the one-mile run. One lap at a time did work! So did one floor a week! It dawned on her that goals are easier to achieve in small steps.

【答案】However, there was something different about Miss Perry. Instead of scolding me, which was often the case, Miss Perry, with a benevolent smile, said, “I bet you must have a better topic to write.” Never expecting that she would have dealt with me so mildly, I stared at her in total disbelief with eyes popping out. Then Miss Perry nodded in affirmation, indicating that she meant what she said. I somehow grabbed a pen and started my composition, and soon a world full of sunshine and blue sky came alive on my paper. When Miss Perry read through my work, her face seemed to be permeated with sunshine and blue sky. “Well done!” she announced and patted me on the back tenderly.
I bet I was touched. It was the first time that my work had been recognized and my body had been touched by a teacher. I knew the sunshine from Miss Perry had pierced through my hard shell and was beginning to melt the solid ice in my heart. Afterwards, I turned to get involved in activities of sorts more actively, take to studying more attentively and befriend people around more faithfully. Miss Perry, as well as others, was gratified to see all the changes in me, which I largely owed to a different Miss Perry.

【答案】
The host finally announced, “The first-prize winner is Tom!” I stood rooted to the spot, disbelief and joy washing over me. The words echoed in my ears as if in a dream. My classmates’ cheers blended with the judges’ nods of approval, and I felt a rush of warmth prickling my eyes. Glancing at Mr. Smith, I saw him beaming, his eyes bright with pride. This wasn’t just a win — it was proof that my endless hours of practice and newfound courage had paid off. The fear that once haunted me melted away, replaced by a sense of accomplishment I’d never known.
I walked up to the stage on shaky legs to receive my award. As I grasped the trophy, its weight grounded me in reality. “Thank you,” I managed, my voice steady despite the trembling. Turning to face the audience, I spoke from the heart: “Once, I was too afraid to speak up. But Mr. Smith’s belief and my own determination changed that.” The applause swelled again, and I realized confidence isn’t born overnight — it’s forged through challenges.

【答案】 The art teacher, sensing the thick tension, asked them to step into her office. She gently closed the door and said, “I see two talented artists who have forgotten why they started creating art together.” She suggested they look at each other's work before submitting. Unwillingly, Mia showed her painting — a beautiful but lonely tree standing in an empty field. Sarah’s eyes filled with tears as she realized Mia had been struggling with self-doubt. “I thought I wasn’t good enough,” Mia confessed. Sarah immediately hugged her friend, showing her own painting - the same tree, but surrounded by colorful flowers. "We complete each other’s painting," Sarah whispered.
As they worked side by side, Sarah felt comfort and joy welling up inside her. They decided to combine their paintings into one masterpiece. Sarah added vibrant flowers around Mia’s tree, while Mia painted delicate birds flying towards the blossoms. Their styles blended perfectly, creating a harmony that could not exist with either of their efforts. When the exhibition opened, their joint work titled “Friendship Blossoms” became the most talked-about piece. Though they didn’t win first prize, something more important happened — the art teacher announced a new “Best Collaboration” award just for them. As they stood proudly by their painting, Mia squeezed Sarah’s hand and said, “This is worth more than any prize.” Sarah smiled, knowing their friendship was the true work of art.

Not really thinking, I blurted out (脱口而出), “You could buy me a bag of cat food. Haha.” I laughed and left.

【答案】参考范文:
I went back to the vet’s after about ten minutes. I walked up to the vet helper, and she was waiting with a huge grin. “You don’t have to pay! That gentleman bought all your cat food for you!” “What the? !” I was so surprised. “Did he know how much it cost before he decided to buy it?” “Yes! He asked first. I thanked him many times for you! I also asked him why he bought the food for you. He said your kindness just now helped him a lot and you asked him to do so, too. He wanted to pass on your kindness.”
Holding the cat food paid by the gentleman, I felt good inside. The gentleman’s action not only made it easier for me to pay for the cat food but also made me believe in the kindness of people. On my way home, I couldn’t stop smiling, thinking about how being polite had led to such a nice surprise. I decided that I would keep looking for opportunities to help others, no matter how small, to keep the cycle of kindness going.

注意:(1)续写词数应为150词左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I walked across the street, past the offending table, and knocked on the student’s door.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I walked across the street, past the offending table, and knocked on the student’s door. When he opened the door, surprise flickered across his face. I forced a smile and held out the plate of cookies. “I’m really sorry about yesterday,” I said, my voice trembling slightly. “I overreacted, and I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that. These cookies are a peace offering.” He stared at me for a moment, then his expression softened. “I guess I could have been nicer too,” he replied. He took a cookie and took a bite. “These are great,” he said, a small smile tugging at his lips.
As I walked home, I felt lighter, as if a weight had been lifted. I was proud of myself for facing my anger and making amends. I realized that holding onto anger only hurts myself in the end. This experience was a reminder that I still have work to do on managing my emotions, but I’m making progress. I looked back at the house across the street and smiled. The Ping-Pong table no longer seemed like a threat. Instead, it was a symbol of a fresh start and the power of forgiveness.

【答案】One possible version:
As the minutes passed, the butterfly slowly began to move. Its wings, once stuck together, gradually separated under the warmth of the sun. Jaden watched with bated breath, his hand tightly holding his mother’s. “It’s working, Mommy,” he said softly, eyes shining with hope. Ojibway nodded, whispering encouragement to both her son and the little creature. Soon enough, the butterfly gave a few tentative flutters before taking off gently from the leaf.
“Yes, we did it!” Ojibway smiled, turning to her son. Jaden beamed back, filled with pride and joy. “We helped it fly again, Mommy!” He exclaimed, clapping his hands. Ojibway hugged him close, feeling his excitement. “You see, honey, sometimes all someone needs is a little help to get back on their feet.” As they walked home through the woods, Jaden kept looking up at the sky, hoping to catch another glimpse of the butterfly. The day was not just about rescuing an insect; it was a lesson in kindness and patience that would stay with him for years to come.

【答案】 Without thinking. Jeff jumped towards the thief. Soon, he pinned the thief down. “I got you!” Jeff announced happily. He then took my handbag off the thief’s hands. Meanwhile, the security guards came. They tied the thief’s hands and took him away. Jeff came towards me and returned the handbag to me. I thanked him gratefully. Seeing my wounded arm, Jeff borrowed the first aid box from the supermarket, with which he cleaned my wound, and wrapped a bandage around it.
“You’d better carry your handbag carefully next time,” Jeff smiled. I nodded, sincerely thanked him again and said goodbye. When leaving, I could hear some ladies whispering, “we should be careful next time.” The incident was truly a lesson not only to me but to others. When I reached home, my mother blamed me for my carelessness. I apologized for not following her advice earlier, and told her Jeff’s heroic deed. That night, I wrote two sentences in my journal. One is that we must take good care of ourselves. The other is that there are heroes around us.

“What are you looking at behind your ears?” Grandma asked me curiously.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I hurried to jump into the bathtub, carefully scrubbing behind my ears. I spent a considerable amount of time ensuring every bit of dirt was gone. When I finally finished bathing, I grabbed a handheld mirror and carefully checked each ear for any signs of potato sprouts. Grandpa noticed my actions and checked my ears with a smile, saying, “Ah, the potato sprouts are all gone.” I felt relieved. From that day forward, I developed a habit of cleaning the area behind my ears and even using mirrors to check. Eventually, Grandma returned home. That evening, as I examined my ears once again, she noticed.
“What are you looking at behind your ears?” Grandma asked me curiously. “I’m checking for ‘potato sprouts’,” I replied. She stared at me, puzzled. After I explained, she chuckled and said, “Oh, your grandpa was just teasing you.” “What?” I exclaimed. It was then that I realized I had been completely fooled and then burst into laughter with Grandma. Despite the childish trick, I continued to clean the area behind my ears regularly because it had already become a habit. Grandpa continued with his other “ear stories” for years to come. I was deeply touched by his sense of humor and wisdom.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
That day I drove my mom to the shelter very slowly. The anticipation of the women’s reactions to our gifts filled the car with a sense of warmth and purpose. As we arrived at the shelter, we were greeted by the grateful faces of the women. My mom, with her usual grace and humility, began to distribute the supplies we had brought. The coffee maker was received with cheers of joy, and the sight of fresh, homemade cupcakes brought smiles to their faces.
As we left, we were met with heartfelt thanks. The women at the shelter expressed their gratitude with warm hugs and words of appreciation. Their smiles were the best reward we could have asked for. As we drove away, my mom looked at me with a satisfied smile on her face. That day, I learned more than ever about the power of kindness and the difference one person can make. I realized that my mom, with her Charity Jar, was not just a superhero to me, but to everyone she touched with her acts of kindness.

For the next couple of weeks, Ray continued to come on Mondays and Fridays. But on that Monday of Thanksgiving week, he didn’t show up. Then one Wednesday afternoon, walking out to my car after work, I heard a voice call my name from across the parking lot.

I can’t wait for it... Love you. Sharon.” Ray looked as happy as a kid.
“Have you made up your mind to move?” I asked. “The moving truck left on Monday and is arriving there today.” he replied. “Sharon is coming here to help drive my car... I’m finally going.” “Wow!” I said as I gave him a big hug. “What made you change your mind?” “Well... you did.” he looked down at the letter as he folded it back up. “These last couple of weeks, you reminded me of how important being a grandfather is.” How I felt delighted to make a difference to him!

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Mark’s contact and communication with Henry made a difference to Henry’s life and character.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Mark held the dog figurine and ran out of his house. He headed back down to Henry’s house. After knocking on the door for several times, Henry opened the door once more. Upon seeing Mark for a second time, Henry couldn’t bring his anger under control any longer. “Haven’t I told you I need no magazines at all?” he shouted at Mark. “Yes, sir,” said Mark with an uneasy expression on his face. “But I think you will like the dog figurine.” Then he handed it to Henry. Taking the figurine from Mark’s hands, the lonely soul was so astonished that words failed to convey his emotions, tears welling up in his eyes. “Thank you so much!” Henry said to the boy tenderly.
Mark’s contact and communication with Henry made a difference to Henry’s life and character. From that day on something changed inside the old man. The neighborhood always found the old man hanging out and smiling at everyone. Henry showed his precious collections to children who were now very willing to play with him. He used to collect figurines in memory of a real living dog which had kept him company for a long time before it died. But now, he wasn’t drowned in sorrow and loneliness anymore. He got to realize the true spirit of life in the end.

An idea appeared in his mind at this moment. Eric wanted to keep it a secret and punish Henry. However, it was not easy. He felt a sense of guilt rising inside of him. Glancing first at Henry, who was still chatting happily, and then at the wallet in his hand, Eric finally made up his mind. He got up and went straight to Henry and his group. Upon seeing Eric approaching him, Henry said, “Hey, loser! You okay? Still want the money?” “No,” replied Eric, “I just came to return your wallet which you have dropped over there.” Henry stood shocked for a second. All his friends were silent too.
Then Henry said, “Why are you giving it back?” “Because I was told by my family that honesty won’t let you down,” explained Eric. Henry avoided Eric’s shining eyes. What followed was a long silence, which was eventually broken by Eric’s stomach growling loudly. Surprisingly, the arrogant boy reached out his hand and asked, “What about having lunch together?” Before Eric could say anything, Henry quickly added, “Of course, my treat.” It was on that very day that Eric made his first friend in the new school, and he truly recognized the value of sincerity and honesty in a relationship.

【答案】参考范文:
The cashier went on with her work and Mom moved next to the woman. She was wondering how to put the extra things into the woman’s cart she’d brought without being noticed. My mom looked up at the cashier and the clever cashier immediately nodded knowingly, winking at my mom and solving the problem by “accidentally” dropping several oranges which flew past the lady. “I’ll get those,” the woman offered kindly to pick up the runaway fruit. I quickly finished our plan as she turned around and bent to pick up the oranges.
When she turned back and was about to leave, she found the extra bag in her cart. She looked at my mom in surprise. “How can I accept this?” she said, handing it to my mother. “It’s nothing. That’s what all of us should do,” my mom replied warmly and firmly. Seeing all this, people around her began to persuade her to take back these items. Finally, with everyone’s help, she took the bag in tears. It was at that moment that I realized we make a living by getting, but we make a life by giving.

【答案】
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. This unexpected appearance frightened my horse, which made it run wildly. I tried my best to control it, but in vain. Frightened as I was, I tried to keep my balance to prevent me from falling off. Fortunately, minutes later, the horse stopped before a river, out of breath, and so did I. At that moment, my dad also came up. Seeing I was OK, he was quite relieved. But it was clear that we got lost.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. We didn’t know where the farm house was. What we could do was to go back along the previous track slowly. But it was really difficult for us in such a dark situation. Just as we were at the point of desperation, we heard a faint voice from the distance. “It must be Uncle Zhang,” I said. So we cried back with excitement. Finally, Uncle Zhang safely brought us back home. What an amazing ride!

On the night of the show, David took the stage and played his heart out, and the audience was blown away by his talent.
After the show, David was full of joy and excitement. He ran to Mrs. Johnson and said, “Thank you for everything you have done, Mrs. Johnson. With your encouragement and help, I have found my purpose in life.” With a big smile on her face, Mrs. Johnson hugged David and said, “You have done all the hard work yourself. All I have done is help you believe in yourself.” She was also happy to realize that one person, no matter how old or how ordinary, could make a difference in the lives of others.
