Around the world, people have different ideas about what good manners are.
When you go to restaurants in different parts of the world, it’s important to know the right and wrong things to do. 1 In fact, if a restaurant is not noisy and lively, you may think there is something wrong with it. However, in many Western countries, restaurants are quiet places. 2
Paying the bill is also different from country to country. 3 In western countries, one person pays if he or she is entertaining clients (宴请宾客). When friends gat together, they usually share the cost. This is “going Dutch”. Also, when westerners pay the bill, they usually leave some money for the waiter. This is called “leaving a tip”. 4 In the US, it is common to leave tips of 10%, 15%, or 20% of the bill. It is decided by how good the service is. Good waiters can make a lot of money!
The way people eat food is different all over the world. 5 Chinese and Indian food, for example, are popular all over the world.
A.Leaving a tip is thought to be polite.
B.They have different greeting cultures from others.
C.In China, one person usually pays for everyone at dinner.
D.However, you can find the same kind of food in many countries.

Table manners are how to behave when you eat a meal. They include how to handle knives, forks and spoons and how to eat in a polite manner. To behave well abroad, you are to know some table manners.
EATING MANNERS
Japan: It is “perfectly” okay to slurp (发出啧啧声) when you eat noodles. Unlike making big noises, slurping slightly is not rude. Japanese also say it tastes better if you slurp.
Russia: Your wrists should be placed on the edge of the table while eating, fork in left hand, and knife in the right. It is not good manners to rest them on your lap. Keep your elbows off the table. Leave some food on your plate to show that the host has given you enough to eat.
France: Never discuss money or religion over dinner. What is different from the manners in Russia is that finishing everything on your plate is considered good manners.
Mexico: Whenever you catch the eye of someone who’s eating, even a stranger, it’s good manners to say “provecho”, which means enjoy. In Mexico, dining is more than a meal. It’s a social occasion — lunches are seldom quick and suppers can last for hours. Where you sit matters in the country. You must say “enjoy your meal” before you leave the table.
DRINKING MANNERS
America: If you empty a bottle into someone’s glass, it obliges that person to buy the next bottle. It’s polite to put the last drops into your own glass.
Australia: In a pub it’s usual to buy a round of drinks for everyone in your group. When it’s your turn, say “It’s my round”. When it’s their round, they will buy it for you. Don’t leave before you’ve bought a round.
Japan: Don’t fill your own glass of alcohol. Instead, you should pour for others and wait for them to do it for you.

八、阅读理解。
阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。
Manners are very important for our daily life. There are many different customs and habits among different countries. We must find out and follow their customs so that they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are examples of the things that a person with good education should do.
If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you will not move before the host says “Come in, please.” After you enter the room, you would not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is sent to your hand, you should say “Thank you” and receive it with two hands. Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a visitor always leaves a little food to show that he has had enough. In England, a visitor always finishes the food to show that he has enjoyed it. The host will be pleased with that.
You have to give your present in public in the Middle East to show it is not a bribe. But it’s good manners to give your present in private in Asia. You mustn’t give knives in Latin America because it suggests that you want to cut off the relationship. You mustn’t give your food to Arabia because it suggests that you think your host isn’t offering you enough to eat.
“Come any time” means “I want you to visit me” in India. If you don’t suggest a time at once, the India will think you are refusing the invitation. But if an Englishman says “Come any time”, they will think you are impolite if you start fixing a date.

Good Manners: A Key to Better Communication
Part 1: Read and Explore
Good manners are an important part of our daily life. They are polite behaviors and habits that show respect for others and help us get along well with people around us. No matter where we are—at school, at home, or in public places—good manners can make a big difference. They not only make us popular among others but also help us build good relationships and show our personal quality.
There are many kinds of good manners in daily life. At school, we should greet our teachers and classmates politely, listen carefully in class, and not talk loudly in the library or classroom. When we ask for help, we should say “please”, and when others help us, we should say “thank you”. If we make a mistake or accidentally hurt others, we should apologize sincerely and say “sorry”. It’s also polite to wait in line patiently when buying things or using public facilities, instead of pushing or cutting in line.
At home, good manners mean respecting our parents and family members. We can help our parents do some housework, such as cleaning the room or washing dishes. We should listen to our parents’ advice and not talk back to them. When we have meals with our family, we should wait for everyone to sit down before eating and not make noise while eating.
In public places, good manners are very important too. We should keep our voices down in public transport, cinemas and restaurants. We should not litter or spit everywhere, and we should take care of public property, such as flowers, trees and public seats. When we meet strangers, a warm smile and a polite greeting can make others feel comfortable.
Good manners are not difficult to develop, but they need us to practice every day. Some people may think that good manners are not necessary, but in fact, they are the key to better communication. Without good manners, we may easily misunderstand others or make others feel unhappy. By developing good manners, we can become better people and make the world a more friendly and harmonious place. We can start with small things, and gradually form the habit of being polite to others.
