San Francisco’s Chinatown is a beautiful, tourist-friendly neighbourhood.I’d visited Chinatown a few times while growing up in Northern California, but never as an adult who could fully dive into this unique neighbourhood until recently. So I decided to go to San Francisco, curious to explore Chinatown’s amazing shops and designs from a new perspective.
My afternoon in Chinatown began at Clay Street.I was traveling with my husband, Ryan, who had never been a tourist in San Francisco before, so it made sense to see where our adventure would take us! We took the downhill path on Clay Street and within a few steps, saw Hang Ah Street.
More of a walkable alley (小巷) than a street, Hang Ah was fairly empty save for a few back doors. We were visiting toward the tail end of the Mid-Autumn Festival, so the alleyway showed us our first view of those special traditional Chinese lanterns that Chinatown has become synonymous with (密不可分的).Hanging from the rooftops, they were a lovely introduction to our adventure.
We continued down Clay Street, not sure where or when to turn left or right, until Waverly Place. We thought Hang Ah was beautiful, but Waverly Place completely stopped us in our tracks.I still remember the look on Ryan’s face; he was completely taken aback, with widened eyes and a camera in hand capturing (捕捉) every moment.
Walking down Waverly, we then heard the sound of wooden instruments coming from what appeared to be a music school.Even though I’d been to Chinatown before, there was something wonderful about this day, this street, this music and of course, the person I was traveling with who made it even more special.

In addition to Big Ben and the River Thames, the red double-decker (双层的) bus is one of the most famous symbols of London.Yet, how many people know the story standing behind the London bus?
The first known “buses” of London were used in 1829 and were horse-drawn, taking people from one place to another just like a taxi service. In 1855 an organisation was formed, called the London General Omnibus Company, to manage all the horse-drawn bus services in London at the time.Later, steam buses appeared.Despite their being faster, the last steam bus ran in London in November 1919, and the roads have since been dominated by the internal combustion engine (由内燃机主导).
London buses serve many different purposes.Local buses, for example, are the most common type of bus. They follow specific routes and take people to local places on a daily schedule.Adults have to pay the full price but children under eleven can have free bus travel. The buses come in a variety of models and types, some being double-deckers while others are single. And for those who might have finished somewhere very late, there are night buses.
Tour buses are another popular bus service. They are specially designed to take tourists on sightseeing trips to famous landmarks around London.
Now, London buses have become so well-known that they have become a large part of the London souvenir industry. There are bus key chains, fridge magnets and many other wonderful souvenirs, all inspired by the famous red buses. So, if you want to buy something to remember your trip to London, the double-decker bus design is always a good idea.
Recently, London has introduced a few electric buses, making this a more environmentally friendly choice, but this kind of technology is still being tested to see if it can actually take the place of the buses that are in use today.
