Zhuang brocade(锦缎), from Guangxi,
China, is one of the country’s four famous
brocades. It is a traditional handmade cloth of the
Zhuang people, with a history of over 1,000
15
years. Known for its bright colors, special patterns(图案), and
strong material, it shows the Zhuang people’s culture and art.
Zhuang brocade began in the Han Dynasty. By the Tang
and Song Dynasties, it had its own style. During the Ming and
Qing Dynasties, it became very popular. It was once a
necessary gift for Zhuang brides(新娘) and was also given to
emperors as a treasure. In 2006, it was listed as China’s first
national intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产), called
“a poem worn on the body”.
Traditionally, cotton threads(线) and colorful silk are
used. Modern brocades may also use linen(亚麻布) or other
materials. The artists created these designs, which have shapes
such as diamonds, dragons, flowers, and animals. People think
these symbols can bring good luck.
In Zhuang culture, brocade is a symbol of love. During
weddings, brides and grooms wear brocade clothes, and their
beds are covered with brocade. The beautiful colors and patterns
make weddings more joyful and traditional.
There are many places where people can visit to enjoy
Zhuang brocade, such as the Guangxi Museum in Nanning, the
Jingxi Brocade Factory, and the Xincheng Mofusi Government
Office(a historic brocade-making place). The handmade
brocade is more expensive but worth keeping as art.
Zhuang brocade is not just an art but a part of Zhuang
culture. To keep it alive, we need to protect old skills and mix
them with new designs. This way, the ancient art can shine
brightly today.#1.9

The postal service was set up very early in ancient China,
but at that time it was hardly used in daily life. The ancient
postal service mainly served the government for the delivery
(递送) of letters and official documents.
25
China’s postal system dates back to more than 3,000 years
ago. According to historical records of the Spring and Autumn
Period and the Warring States Period, there were three ways of
sending messages: On foot, by carriage(马车) and on
horseback. In the Qin and Han Dynasties, the postal system
developed quite completely. The documents that needed to be
delivered were divided into different grades and sent by special
persons and horses. By the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the scale
(规模) of postal service was very large. There was a post
station about every 30 li along the postal route(邮路). The
station was a place for people to rest and eat.
At that time, horseback riding was a more common way of
transportation. The usual speed at which a courier(信使)
delivered documents on horseback was 300 li a day. If the
documents were urgent, the courier would speed up, traveling
400 to 600 li a day.
You must have heard of “Eight-hundred-li urgent”, which
means the courier had to travel 800 li every day. Usually, every
courier who delivered such urgent documents had a yellow flag
tied around his waist(腰部).#1.6

The Chinese character fu is a necessity(必需品) of the
Spring Festival celebrations. It expresses people’s best wishes for
the coming new year. It’s recorded that people have already
practiced this tradition in the Song Dynasty.
35
The character fu can be put up either normally or upside
down, because in Chinese, the “reversed(颠倒的) fu” and “fu
arrives” sound similar to each other, both being pronounced as
“fu dao le”.
There is a story about the origin of putting up the
“reversed fu”. Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming
Dynasty, once used the character fu as a secret signal to kill a
family for insulting(侮辱) his wife, Empress Ma.
To avoid the accident, Empress Ma ordered every family in the
capital to put up the character fu on their doors before the sun
rose the next day. But one family put up the character upside
down, because they couldn’t read or write.
The next day, the emperor found the character fu
everywhere, including the upside-down one. The emperor was
very angry and immediately ordered his palace guards to kill
the family who had put up the character differently.
Realizing the situation was not good, Empress Ma said to
the emperor, “That family knew that you were coming to visit
them today, so they put up the character upside down on
purpose. Doesn’t it have the same meaning as ‘fu arrives’?”
After hearing this, the emperor set the family free. From
then on, people began to put up the character fu upside down
for the purpose of hoping for luck and honouring Empress Ma.#1.8

Weiqi, commonly known as Go in English, is a board game.
It was invented in ancient China. The game is considered one
of the Four Arts that Chinese literators(文人) were required
to master. Weiqi has a history of over 4,000 years, even older
than Chinese chess. According to some historical records, the
53
game, known as Yi in its early years, is said to have been
invented by Emperor Yao. Seeing that his son had bad behavior
and didn’t like to study, the emperor was rather worried. He
wanted to find something to help educate his son well, so a
simple board game came to him.
The rules of Weiqi are simple: using black and white
stones, two players take turns placing their stones on empty
cross points of the board. The goal is to have a larger total
area on the board. Players must protect their own stones. Stones
do not move and are only taken off the board if they are
completely surrounded(包围).
The scene of two people playing Weiqi appears in many
traditional Chinese paintings. The image(画面) of a player
holding a stone over the board, looking for a place to put it,
was later turned into a popular Chinese idiom(成语), which
means“unsure about making a move”. The expression is still
widely used today.
With its development, Weiqi became ▲. Later, it spread to
Japan, South and North Korea and Western countries. Today, it
has become an international board game.#1.6
