Running into a Better Life
This global site is a place for runners to share their stories about running. So if you are a runner with a story to tell, get in touch — we’d love to hear from you!
Li Yue, 16, Beijing
I was born with asthma (哮喘) and I never thought I’d be a runner! I only joined my local athletics club because my doctor told me that in my particular case exercise could improve how my lungs work. But before I knew it, I was taking part in local races. As my fitness and my running improved, I started running in national competitions. This year I won silver in the under 18’s 10,000 metres! And who knows, next year I could win gold!
Sarah, 36, Montreal
Not so long ago, I didn’t do any exercise — not even any jogging! Then I discovered an app called Running Power. It lists your performance against other runners in your social network. At first, I kept running just to see my name in the top five. Soon, I found that I was not alone-I came across other runners running for the same purpose! Now I no longer use the app, but I’ve fallen in love with running, and still do it with my running friends.
David, 52, New York
As a computer engineer, there’s always a new challenge just around the corner! It can be quite stressful at times, which makes me feel anxious. To help deal with this, I go running as often as I possibly can. Whether I’m at the gym or on the road, my nervous energy pushes me through mile one. By mile two, the tension (紧张) has moved from my mind to my legs. By the end of the run, all my stress has disappeared and I’m ready to face the next day at work!
1. Why did Li Yue join the athletics club at first?
A. To make more friends. B. To challenge her limits.
C. To win a national medal. D. To improve her health conditions.
2. How does running influence David?
A. It makes him more creative. B. It helps him reduce pressure.
C. It helps him meet new partners. D. It improves his work performance.
3. What do the three people have in common?
A. They all start running for health. B. They all use apps for running.
C. They all benefit from running. D. They are all professional runners.

In the heart of Nairobi, an excellent man known as the “Nairobi Birdman” is doing a lot to help save local birds. Rodgers Oloo Magutha, often seen with an injured kite on his head, has spent his life protecting a variety of birds, including pigeons, owls, and many others that face dangers in the busy city environment.
Rodgers’s journey began far from Nairobi, in a simple home near Kenya’s Lake Nakuru National Park, a safe place full of birds. Despite his challenging childhood and without a stable (稳定的) home, he found calm in the beauty of nature. His early experiences going into the park to observe birds made him love wildlife, and this love has grown stronger over the years.
Throughout his life, Rodgers has always felt a strong connection to birds, often caring for those that were injured or sick. “We used to stay with the birds on the streets,” he shared, expressing his dream of establishing a special shelter that would allow him to rescue even more bird friends.
Today, with a stable house, Rodgers has turned his place into a home for the birds he cares for, winning him a beloved name on social media as the Nairobi Birdman. His Instagram account shows his adventures, filled with wonderful moments like dancing with a marabou stork (秃鹳), while also educating his young followers about fascinating topics, such as the reasons behind flamingos’ bright pink feathers.
Rodgers hopes to create a formal bird rescue center where he can legally and safely care for birds, with the necessary facilities (设施) to provide the best possible care. Until that dream becomes a reality, he continues to depend on donations to support his efforts, nursing and letting birds fly back into the wild whenever they are ready.
Rodgers Oloo Magutha’s story inspires us all to appreciate the natural world and the importance of protecting the wildlife living in it. Sharing his love for birds is a wonderful way to spread awareness and encourage others to support protection efforts.

What comes to your mind when you think of music in Austria? You might think of classical composers, such as Mozart. Or you might remember the film The Sound of Music, whose story takes place in Austria. But Austrian music started off quite differently.
One of the earliest types of Austrian music may not seem like music at all. Yodelling is a form of shouting that changes between low and high sounds. It is thought to have begun as a way for animal herders (牧民) in the mountains to communicate or to call their animals. Even today, yodelling is often used in other kinds of music, including pop, rock and country music.
However, Austria is best known for its many famous classical composers. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Austrian royal (王室的) family was in favor of the arts, and they drew many musicians to Vienna. The city soon became known as a centre for musical innovation (创新) and performance. Composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Strauss II and Franz Schubert lived in Vienna. Some of them even used traditional Austrian folk songs or tunes in their works.
Opera has also been a popular music form in Austria, and it was not just wealthy Austrians who attended performances. Many popular classical composers also wrote operas, which regular citizens of Vienna went in large numbers to hear. Even today, there are opera productions performed every year at the St Margarethen Opera Festival. This festival is held outdoors, in a very unusual location: the rocky sandstone backdrop of a quarry (采石场). It now serves as a stage for opera, and also jazz and pop concerts. They all take place in the open air under the stars, taking advantage of the quarry’s unusual sound effects.
Austria has a long and rich musical history, from folk songs and dances to classical symphonies and operas. No matter what kind of music you like, chances are that you’ll be able to find it in one of the country’s many theatres or small cafes. The sounds of Austrian music are everywhere.
8. What’s the original purpose of yodelling?
A. Creating classic music. B. Attracting tourists.
C. Entertaining herdsmen. D. Connecting with others.
9. Why did Vienna become a musical centre in the 18th and 19th centuries?
A. It won royal support. B. It had many theatres.
C. It often held music festivals. D. It had folk music tunes.
10. What is special about St Margarethen Opera Festival?
A. Its music types. B. Its holding place.
C. Its audience groups. D. Its performing time.
11. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Famous composers in Austria. B. The origin of Austrian yodelling.
C. Austria’s various musical culture. D. The development of Austrian opera.

There was a time, not so long ago, when kids built castles, climbed trees, and rode bikes until dark. These outdoor adventures have not disappeared. They are just waiting to be rediscovered beyond screens.
While technology offers many benefits, the trend (趋势) of children having smartphones may change how they develop, play, and connect. According to TIME, much of the technology that kids are using is designed to be addictive. However, parents including Holly Moscatiello, the leader of the nonprofit The Balance Project, are helping children control the use of digital devices. She’s leading a counter-movement to get kids off screens and back into real life.
“We want to make experiencing community life as easy as using a phone,” she told TIME. The group is organizing community projects that make outdoor play exciting again, such as cycling to school together and Balance Boxes- kits with small toys and clay (黏土) for screen-free fun. It’s a simple reminder that independence and connection can develop when kids look up from their devices.
Moscatiello notes that smartphones have reshaped childhood nearly overnight: 89 percent of 12-year-old British kids own a smartphone and the average age of receiving one’s first phone is nine. To fight this, The Balance Project started a parent agreement in Oxfordshire, where parents of around 4,000 children promised not to give their kids smartphones until Year Nine (8th grade).
The goal of this group is solidarity — when everyone waits, no child feels left out. In one school in Oxfordshire, students lock their phones away during the day, and teachers report calmer classrooms. “Now we focus on school and study better,” a student at a smartphone-free school said.
By joining together, parents and communities are making it easier for the next generation to grow up rooted in real life instead of through a screen. Giving children back their time, freedom, and face-to-face friends is one of the best investments (投资) a parent can make towards a brighter future.
12. What does The Balance Project do to help children?
A. It teaches kids to use technology wisely. B. It offers free digital devices to poor families.
C. It trains parents to deal with screen addiction. D. It organizes activities to encourage outdoor play.
13. What can we learn about smartphone use from paragraph 4?
A. Many British kids refuse to use smartphones. B. Smartphones are common among British kids.
C. British kids get phones earlier than others. D. Most parents are against their kids using phones.
14. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “solidarity” in paragraph 5?
A. Teamwork. B. Progress. C. Curiosity D. Independence
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Kids’ Outdoor Activities Disappear. B. Smartphones Bring Harm to Children.
C. The Balance Project Becomes Popular. D. Bring Back a Smartphone-Free Childhood.

Until that dream becomes a reality, he continues to depend on donations to support his efforts, nursing and letting birds fly back into the wild whenever they are ready.

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. D
