B “Mom, are you ready?” Dad had finally agreed that Mom and I could go on a one-week African safari I had always wanted to visit Africa’s great outdoors. It required a lot of training to get prepared for the safari. The training was boring, but I would suffer anything to go on a safari. And as the coach stressed, the training was very important. At last, it was time to set out. The flight took 16 hours. I was bored to death, but deep down I still felt excited. When my mom, our guide, two other camping friends and I were driving to our campsite in a big jeep, I was thrilled to pieces. I couldn’t stop taking pictures of everything and telling everyone how happy I was. After taking many turns, we finally reached our destination. It was the day that I had been waiting for for the past three years! We learned many interesting facts on our safari. For example, the giraffe has the most powerful kick of all the animals. The black mamba (黑曼巴蛇) can move up to 11 kilometers an hour. I saw some lions trying to avoid the afternoon sun while lying in the shade of a tree. I had read many books about wildlife. Aren’t lions very fierce (凶猛的)? We stopped to take a few quick pictures of them. To my surprise, the lions didn’t seem to mind. When I saw how calm they looked, I wondered if all the books I had read had been telling the truth. Then, we saw a fox, a group of playful monkeys and a not-so-happy-looking wolf. The sunlight was so strong that I felt as if I had just taken a shower in sweat! At night, we had steak, baked potatoes, green beans and many types of fresh fruit I had never even seen before. They were delicious and I ate quite a lot of them. When we returned home, I felt tired but proud. It was an amazing trip which I will never forget. 39. What did the writer have to do to get ready for the safari? A Read many books about wildlife. B. Take a 16-hour flight. C. Do a lot of training. D. Drive a jeep. 40. What does the underlined phrase “thrilled to pieces” mean? A. very tired and bored B. very excited and happy C. a little worried D. quite calm and peaceful 41. Why was the writer surprised when seeing the lions? A. Because they were lying under a tree. B. Because they were angry when we took pictures of them. C. Because they were trying to avoid the sun. D. Because they looked calm, not as described in books. 42. What is the passage mainly about? A. The preparation for an African safari. B. An unforgettable African safari experience. C. The differences between animals in books and in real life. D The importance of training before a trip. C When I arrived at the Sign Language Center for my first American Sign Language (ASL) class, a man took one look at me and held up some fingers. One? Two? I put up one finger, and he directed me to the Level 1 class. Class time was strictly “voices off” to encourage immersive (沉浸式的) learning and to show respect to the deaf teachers. Without the power of speech, all my classmates and I could do was smile and nod at one another as we took in the new vocabulary. As a writer, I pride myself on a certain talent for language. I was taught that there’s a perfect mix of words that can most exactly communicate any thought. With ASL, I expected to feel similarly, and thought fluency would come after I collected enough signs. The first thing we learn in ASL class is the alphabet. As my classmates and I used ASL to ask and answer questions, we came across words without matching signs and could only spell them with difficulty. That was the main experience of our first weeks learning ASL. It was embarrassing (尴尬): Seeing a dozen politely smiling faces watching me as I slowly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling words—often many times—was its own kind of suffering. Over time, I picked up on new ways, like waving a hand or stomping on the ground to get someone’s attention. My fingers stopped as they reached for new shapes, and I struggled to differentiate very similar looking signs. Eventually I realized that when you’re communicating in sign language, diction (措词) is not as important as the way you express what you’re communicating. I once asked a teacher how to sign the word “desperate (渴望的)”. “ASL doesn’t have a direct translation of every English word,” he told me. “If you want to sign ‘desperate’, you might just sign the word ‘want’, but with the proper facial and body posturing to show your desperation. It doesn’t make sense to sign ‘frustrated’ if your face doesn’t look frustrated at all, ” he added—it’s like speaking in a calm voice and showing no facial expressions while you’re angry. I’ve been attending ASL classes for almost two years. At the beginning, my reason was common: a childhood curiosity with “secret languages”. While ASL may not completely share a vocabulary with English, that doesn’t mean it lacks precision (精确). Its precision, I’ve learned, lies in the common language of the body. 43. How did the writer and her classmates communicate in the first ASL class? A. They spelled the words. B. They smiled and nodded. C. They held up their fingers. D. They looked at each other. 44. Why did the writer feel embarrassed at the beginning of learning ASL? A. She wasn’t sure about the answers. B. She had to smile at her classmates. C. She misspelled and respelled many times. D. She didn’t know how to get others’ attention. 45. What has the writer learned from this experience? A. The body gives life to language. B. Secret language is difficult to learn. C. ASL has the same vocabulary as English. D. Spelling is more important than expression. D ①In small towns, you can often see people greeting their neighbors—at the corner store, on the street in the morning, or outside their tidy homes. In today’s city life, however, standing side by side with unfamiliar neighbors in a supermarket line, people might look quietly at their phones. Starting a chat with someone they don’t know well can feel slightly uneasy. Yet this silence may come at a cost. Greeting your neighbors is actually good for you, especially if you say hello to six people, according to a recent survey. ②Saying hello to people increases well-being (幸福), but six is the magic number. The well-being score increases from zero to six and then there are no further increases. These results are part of the Gallup National Health and Well-Being Index which studies overall well-being and is calculated on a scale of (在……范围内) 0 to 100. The survey was carried out from May 30th to June 6th, 2023 and was based on the answers from 4,556 Americans. It covered social well-being, physical well-being, community well-being and more. People who said they didn’t say hello to anyone in their neighborhood scored a 51.5. People who greeted six neighbors had a score of 64.1. ③You might think that saying hello to neighbors is only about social well-being, but that actually isn’t the case. In fact, regular (经常的) greetings also improve a person’s physical well-being and community well-being. That’s because all of these are connected. You will be more likely to speak to people if you think your community is safe. Your physical well-being can improve if you are getting out and walking around your neighborhood. ④“We don’t require that you know the person well; just stop and talk to him,” said Dan Witters, the survey’s director. “But the more people to whom you say hello, the greater the probability is that you’re actually going to start a conversation with them.” ⑤While this is just a survey for now, its findings clearly point to a simple yet powerful truth: saying hello on a regular basis is an easy and effective way to improve your own well-being. So next time you pass a neighbor, don’t hesitate to say “hello”—it’s a small act that brings big advantages for yourself and those around you. 46. How does the writer start the passage? A. By listing numbers. B. By telling a story. C. By raising a question. D. By describing scenes (场景). 47. Which of the following may show the change in the well-being score? A. B. C. D. 48. What’s the best structure of this passage? A. ①/②/③④⑤ B. ①②/③④/⑤ C. ①②③/④/⑤ D. ①/②③④/⑤ 49. What’s the best title for this passage? A. Magic City Life B. Greetings for Well-being C. Importance of Well-being D. Neighbors’ Greetings E A trip to Mars would take about eight months on a modern spaceship. That might seem like a great opportunity to catch up on your sleep. But a recent experiment finds that people may develop sleep problems on a long space journey, or at least on the pretend trip in these tests. “If we at some point really want to go to Mars and we want to send humans, then we need to know how they will cope (处理) , not just physically but also mentally,” Mathias Basner told Science News. He is a sleep researcher at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia. His team published its new findings in early January. Their experiment was like a long-running game of make-believe: Six men spent 520 days—a little more than 74 weeks—on a pretend trip to Mars. In fact, they spent the entire time confined (封闭的) inside a small, windowless capsule in Moscow, Russia. The goal of this experiment was to learn how people would cope with living in close quarters, and facing the psychological pressure during travel to and from the Red Planet. During their trip, the travelers pretended to land on Mars, set up equipment, and carry out science tests. Throughout the pretend trip, other scientists were collecting data on their sleep, activity levels, mood, and cognitive function. Each participant wore a device on his wrist. Once every minute, that device recorded the man’s motions. From these data, Basner’s team found that the volunteers were less active and slept more as the mission continued. During the last 18. 5 weeks of the trial, most participants were sleeping more each day than they had during the first 18. 5 weeks. Four of the men also developed sleep problems. One man’s natural sleep cycle shifted from a roughly 24-hour day to almost 25 hours long. By coincidence, that time is closer to the length of a day on Mars. This meant that he was sometimes awake when his members were asleep, and vice versa. Another one of the six pretend travelers slept less over time. Tests showed that he became less alert (警觉的) . Messing with sleep can have serious consequences, says Jeffrey Sutton. He’s a doctor and scientist who worked on the study and also directs the Center for Space Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. “When you are doing high-risk behavior in space, a performance deficit can be life threatening,” he told Science News, noting that even small mistakes could have extremely terrible results in the severe environment of space. The decrease in activity found by Basner’s team could also prove problematic in space, says Sutton. He suggests that astronauts may need to follow stricter exercise to stay healthy and maintain their sleep patterns during long space journeys. 50. Why was the experiment carried out? A. To test the safety in space travel. B. To record the length of a day on Mars. C. To explore long space journeys’ effects on humans. D. To measure how much sleep astronauts need during the trip. 51. What the main problem did some travelers face during long space journey? A. They lost their sense of time due to sleep disorders. B. They had to be disconnected from the outside world. C. They suffered from physical pain throughout the journey. D. They experienced sleep cycle changes or poorer sleep quality. 52. What can we learn from the passage? A. Reduced activity and sleep disorders may cause safety problems. B. Confined environments in space have a positive effect on human sleep. C. A 25-hour sleep cycle is more suitable for astronauts traveling to Mars. D. Most volunteers were more active during the last weeks of the experiment. Old Summer Palace Treasures Come to Hefei Last week, a great exhibition was held in Hefei. I had always wanted to visit Africa’s great outdoors. A. Read many books about wildlife. D. The importance of training before a trip. C 40. B 41. D 42. 根据第三段“It required a lot of training to get prepared for the safari.” B“very excited and happy”一致,其余选项均与语境情感相反。 根据第四段“I had read many books about wildlife. Aren’t lions very fierce? We stopped to take a few quick pictures of them. To my surprise, the lions didn’t seem to mind. When I saw how calm they looked, I wondered if all the books I had read had been telling the truth.”可知,作者原本从书中得知狮子很凶猛,拍照时却发现“the lions didn’t seem to mind”,且“they looked calm”,这让作者产生了“书中内容是否真实”的疑问,因此感到惊讶。 B。 C When I arrived at the Sign Language Center for my first American Sign Language (ASL) class, a man took one look at me and held up some fingers. One? It was embarrassing (尴尬的): Seeing a dozen politely smiling faces watching me as I slowly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling words—often many times—was its own kind of suffering. B 44. C 45. 根据文章第一段“Without the power of speech, all my classmates and I could do was smile and nod at one another as we took in the new vocabulary.” 根据文章第二段“That was the main experience of our first weeks learning ASL. It was embarrassing (尴尬的): Seeing a dozen politely smiling faces watching me as I slowly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling words—often many times—was its own kind of suffering.” 根据文章最后一段“While ASL may not completely share a vocabulary with English, that doesn’t mean it lacks precision (精确). Its precision, I’ve learned, lies in the common language of the body.” A。 D ①In small towns, you can often see people greeting their neighbors—at the corner store, on the street in the morning, or outside their tidy homes. In fact, regular (经常) greetings also improve a person’s physical well-being and community well-being. 根据第二段“The well-being score increases from zero to six and then there are no further increases.” B。 E A trip to Mars would take about eight months on a modern spaceship. C 51. D 52. 根据文章第三段“The goal of this experiment was to learn how people would cope with living in close quarters, and facing the psychological pressure during travel to and from the Red Planet.” 根据文章第六段“Four of the men also developed sleep problems. One man’s natural sleep cycle shifted from a roughly 24-hour day to almost 25 hours long. Another one of the six pretend travelers slept less over time.” 根据文章倒数第二段“‘When you are doing high-risk behavior in space, a performance deficit can be life threatening,’ he told Science News, noting that even small mistakes could have extremely terrible results in the severe environment of space.”以及最后一段“The decrease in activity found by Basner’s team could also prove problematic in space, says Sutton.” 故选A。 Old Summer Palace Treasures Come to Hefei Last week, a great exhibition was held in Hefei.
