Over the past ten years, China has achieved excellent development, and its high-speed rail system stands out as a clear proof (证明). On December 29, 2025, four new high-speed rail lines—Xi’an-Yan’an, Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu, Wuhan-Yichang and Hangzhou-Quzhou—started services. With these new additions, China’s total operating high-speed rail mileage (里程) has passed 50,000 kilometers, which is more than the total length of all high-speed rail lines in the rest of the world.
Today, the high-speed rail network covers 97% of Chinese cities with a population of over 500,000, completely changing people’s travel experience. Traveling between cities within 500 kilometers takes only one to two hours, and a 1,000-kilometer journey takes about four hours. An average of 16 million passengers take high-speed rail every day. This is a far cry from the past, when buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache and the average train speed was only 60kilometers per hour.
High-speed rail now connects big cities with medium and small towns, driving tourism and local industries. For example, after the Hangzhou-Changsha high-speed rail opened in 2014, Jiangxi Province—located between the two cities—saw a huge increase of 248 million tourists in ten years. Moreover, China has shared its technology and experience with over 40 countries, cooperating on projects. From importing (引进) technology to becoming a global leader, China’s high-speed rail is a proud symbol of the country’s progress, and faster maglev (磁悬浮) trains are being studied for even better development in the future.
39. When did China’s high-speed rail mileage reach over 50,000 kilometers?
A. In 2014.
B. In 2024.
C. In 2025.
40. Which city is most likely to be covered by China’s high-speed rail?

B. A city with 400,000 people.
C. A city with 600,000 people.
41. What does the underlined phrase “a far cry” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. 非常相似
B. 大不相同
C. 一模一样

词句猜测题。根据“This is a far cry from the past, when buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache and the average train speed was only 60kilometers per hour.”

In China, the Lei Feng story is well known. His spirit has been passed down by many people with cultural differences.
Lugazo is a 24-year-old African boy. In 2017, he came to China to study. After arriving at the railway station in Wuhan, he was helpless because he had no idea which way to go, and he couldn’t speak any Chinese. A passenger sitting next to him on the train volunteered to take him to the university. The kind man was the first “Lei Feng” he met.
The experience encouraged Lugazo a lot. Several months later, he joined the university’s Volunteer Team and was given a red jacket with Lei Feng’s photo on it. The next year, he did voluntary work at the Wuhan Railway Station. “Once, after I helped an old woman, her 5-year-old grandson came up to me and said ‘Thank you, Lei Feng!’. That really touched me,” he said.
Another of his favorite memories was teaching English to children in a school in Hubei. Many of their parents worked in other cities, so the children lived with their grandparents. The children were quiet and seldom expressed themselves. Lugazo remembers a 10-year-old boy who was always alone in one corner. “I took him to the teachers’ office. We played games and became friends.” At first, the boy hardly took part in games during class, but after a week, he was taking part just like the others. The change made Lugazo happy.
These days, anyone can be described as a “Lei Feng” if they would like to help others. More and more people like Lugazo give warmth to people in need.

A. He couldn’t find his friend at the station. B. He couldn’t find his way to the station.
C. He couldn’t speak Chinese to ask for help. D. He didn’t study hard enough in the university.

A. The boy improved his scores. B. The boy started to do voluntary work.

A. Advantages of being a volunteer. B. Different ways of helping others.

Hi! My name is Adam and I’m a new student at junior high school. Going from primary school to junior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing (令人困惑的).
First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take. The school teacher helped me choose the suitable ones: maths, English, chemistry, history, and Chinese. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to speak it well when I graduate (毕业). My teacher suggested that I should study English literature (文学) because I like English and I’m good at it.
I had to choose after-school activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn’t play well enough. So, I was unhappy, but I won’t quit. I’ll find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year. I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community.
I know I’ll have to study harder as a junior high school student and get used to being responsible (负责任的) for a lot more. I’m a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my courses, and it’ll be quite difficult to get used to all the homework. Still, I’m happy to be here. Studying hard isn’t always fun, but I’ll be well prepared for high school or whatever else comes in the future.
49. Why did the teacher advise Adam to choose English literature?
A. It’s useful in the future. B. Adam’s mother tongue is English.
C. Adam prefers it to any other subject. D. Adam likes English and is good at it.
50. Why was Adam refused by the school football team coach?
A. He had chosen too many after-school activities. B. He joined a volunteer club.
C. He was short for his age. D. He was not good at playing football.
51. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “quit” in Chinese in this passage?
A. 理解 B. 放弃 C. 发现 D. 反对
52. Which would be the best title of this passage?
A. The courses at junior high school B. The after-school activities at junior high school
C. The challenges at junior high school D. The clubs at junior high school

Edward was a hard-working farmer who worked on his land every day. Bob was a lively and clever boy, and he always followed his father around. The son could often learn something useful about life from his father.
One sunny morning, Edward took Bob to the yard. He pointed to several huge stones lying on the ground and said with a smile, “Son, look at these stones. They are in the way now. What can we do?”
“Can we move them away?” Bob thought for a while and asked.
“Good idea! Maybe you can do it!” nodded the father.
Bob’s eyes lit up with excitement, and he rushed over to try pushing one of the large stones.
However, no matter how hard he tried, the stone remained there.
Bob, feeling a little sad, said, “Dad, I tried to move it just now, but it didn’t move at all. I have tried my best. I have given it my all. I’ve used up all my strength.” Edward smiled softly and replied, “No, Son, you haven’t used up all your strength. You haven’t asked for help.”
With these words, Edward bent down, lifted a heavy stone and began moving it. He tried hard and finally moved it to one side of the road. Bob watched his father in amazement when his father proved his words with his action.

41. What does the underlined phrase “a far cry” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

C. He was short for his age. D. He was not good at playing football.
51. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “quit” in Chinese in this passage?
A. 理解 B. 放弃 C. 发现 D. 反对
52. Which would be the best title of this passage?

C. The challenges at junior high school D. The clubs at junior high school

In a peaceful mountain village, a father named Edward and his beloved son Bob lived in a small farmhouse.
After Edward moved the stone, he turned to Bob and said, “Facing challenges with a determined (坚毅的) spirit is important. However, your own strength is limited. When a task is beyond your ability, you can choose to borrow strength from those around you.”
