Jorge Serrano and his dog Charlie were walking through a park in Cornelius, North Carolina, when they heard noise near the pond. It was a duck, sounding from a drain (下水道) in the center of the water. Across the street, about 150 feet away, a small group of people got together at the mouth of the drain.
Five baby ducks swam too close and they were stuck (困住) in the drain. You could hear their scared cries. The drain was less than 2 feet in diameter (直径). Serrano would never fit. But Charlie ...
“He’ll do anything you ask him to do.” said Serrano. “He’ll send newspapers when he walks by somebody’s house. And he’ll carry flowers to somebody if you ask him to do it.”
Charlie looked into the drain, listening carefully.
“Go and get the ducks!” Serrano said.
It was dark, dirty and scary in the drain. Charlie took a few steps towards the unknown. He turned back with a look that said, “What are you asking me to do here?”
“Go in and get the ducks!” Serrano said again.
Charlie went away, returning seconds later with a dirty stick. He handed it hopefully to Serrano.
“Ducks.” said Serrano.
This time, the message came across. Charlie moved into the cold and dark drain. His footfalls went away. ________ If Charlie got lost or stuck, what should he do?
But the dog did it—taking things back. Minutes later, he appeared, gently holding a duckling in his mouth. Serrano cheered him on, and then sent him back in.
Five times, Charlie went into the drain and carried the ducks out one by one. At last the baby ducks were reunited (重聚) with their mother.

They are responsible for checking and fixing a 220kV transmission line (输电线) crossing this desert, also known as the “Sea of Death”. “We need to cross the desert once a month to check the 729 transmission towers in order to ensure the power supply (供电) for counties and villages along the Taklimakan. The work is challenging, yet meaningful,” Ehemat Tohti said.
In the fall, at noon, the desert’s surface is still hot, while the temperature between morning and evening has changed greatly. “Now the temperature difference between morning and evening is about 20℃. It was cold when we set off. As we went further, the temperature grew, only to fall down again in the evening. So it’s necessary to take both heavy and light clothing,” he said.
Since most of the route was impossible to reach by car, they needed to travel by motorcycle and on foot for their work. Walking through the desert was difficult. “The harsh environment is not only unbearable for people, but also can easily cause breakdowns of their motorcycles.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has changed students’ lives and studying a lot. With AI tools, learning seems to be easier, but students must be careful when using them to stay away from problems. Let’s find out how AI influences (影响) education.
Studies show that 65% of middle school students now use AI tools for learning. They turn to technology (技术) to save time when finishing hard schoolwork. Photo-solving apps help students find answers 3 times faster, but studies show 40% of the students just copy answers without thinking.
Three popular tools show AI’s power in education. ChatGPT explains (解释) difficult topics like space science in simple words. DeepSeek, a Chinese writing helper, gives advice to improve vocabulary and logic in articles. Another tool, Doubao, acts like a homework guide—ask it “Why do plants need sunlight?” and it explains biology ideas with examples.
By using these tools, students can solve problems in different subjects. However, always asking AI tools for answers without thinking may stop you from coming up with creative ideas. If students use AI to write passages every day, they might forget why practicing writing matters. Also, too much screen time causes health problems. Doctors say students using AI over 2 hours daily get 1.8 times more eye pain.
It’s helpful to set clear rules for yourself. For example, try solving a math problem yourself for 10 minutes before using apps to check answers. When writing, use ChatGPT only for ideas but organize them yourself. Noticing your time spent on AI tools and trying to use it for less than 1 hour daily can not only relax your eyes but also give you a break to improve your work with your creativity.
Let’s use AI tools wisely.

Five baby ducks swam too close and they were stuck (困住) in the drain You could hear their scared cries.

Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. Our personal dream and clear goal makes us study hard and make progress each day.
But why do you have dreams and goals, you still end up with nothing? The differences between successful people and the dreamers is their persistent (锲而不舍的) action (行动). When you find some of your lessons very hard, you must try, keep trying and not give up.
This is the famous formula (公式) for success:
Dream > Believe > Achieve
Most people have what they want (Dream) and they think they can realize their dreams (Believe). But they do nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true.
I believe that if you really want to make your dream come true, you have to add one thing to your success formula:
Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve
For me, act is the most important thing for success and that’s to Take Persistent Action (Act). If you say, “I can’t do it” and give up, you can never do anything successful. However, “I’ll try” may give you a surprise. There will be obstacles in our life. We must try to solve (解决) them. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action.
Please remember: Persistent Action can make your dream come true.
6. What should you do when you find your lessons very hard?
A. Ask people for help. B. Try and keep trying.

C. To show what his goals are. D. To introduce a dream.

At the break of day, Ehemat Tohti, a 55-year-old electrical (电气的) worker and his workmates prepared their equipment and embarked on their journey into the heart of the Taklimakan Desert, China’s largest desert (沙漠), to begin a day of patrolling (巡逻).
Moreover, the hidden roots of red willow and Populus euphratica trees, buried under the sand, often puncture the tires, making an unseen danger,” he said.
“The desert is beautiful, but it’s also unpredictable. So you don’t know what you’re going to meet,” he added. They face lots of challenges during their patrols, including floods, swamps, and meeting wild animals such as boars and foxes.
Luckily, in 2022, drones (无人机) came to help their patrol work. “Human workers can patrol up to about 20 power towers a day, but with the help of drones, we can cover nearly 100 towers.” Ehemat Tohti also said that he didn’t plan to retire. “I want to share my experience and skills with more people and keep learning more knowledge.”

Have you heard about “Survival (生存) Holidays”? It is for children to go into the lonely (荒凉的) place for exciting activities, and their parents won’t go with them. During the activities, other grown-ups will not be around them, either.
Many parents like “Survival Holidays” because they think being close to nature is good for children. Many children in big cities spend most time watching TV and playing computer games. “Survival Holidays” makes a big difference to their life.
Is “Survival Holidays” a great idea? Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. And they need to be on their own. Parents like to see their children join in activities, but they think the activities should be controlled (被控制) by grown-ups. Children don’t know what to do when they meet difficulty. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard thing. Children usually don’t know what to do in face of danger. Even small danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them.
The survival activities are good for children. Even years later they will still remember what they learned. Some learned to keep their head in dangerous times. Some learned how to stay away from danger. Others learned how to work in a team. All these will help them a lot in their life.

19. Which can NOT children learn from the survival activities?
