I. Teaching Objectives
Language Ability:Master skimming and scanning skills to get the main idea and key details of the interview; grasp key vocabulary and phrases ; understand the structure of an interview .
Cultural Awareness:Know the work of Orbis and the Flying Eye Hospital; understand the difficulties of people with eye problems in poor areas; realize the dedication of international medical volunteers and cultivate the sense of international humanitarianism.
Thinking Quality:Infer Dr Ma's feelings and the purpose of Orbis from the interview; analyze why Orbis uses a plane as a hospital; reflect on the importance of charity work and what we can do to support it.
Learning Ability:Use skimming and scanning to read interview texts; guess the meaning of new words from the context; sort out key information and complete information charts.
II. Key & Difficult Points
Key:Grasping the key information of Orbis' work; mastering the key vocabulary and phrases in the interview; understanding the interview structure.

III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Pre-reading
Predict
Show the title An interview with an Orbis doctor and ask:
Q1: What questions will the interviewer ask Dr Ma?
Q2: What information about Orbis can we get from the interview?
Step 2: While-reading
(1) Skimming
Ask students to read the interview quickly and answer two questions:
(1) What is the aim of Orbis?
(2) What is the special thing about Orbis' work?
(2) Scanning
Ask students to read carefully and complete the information chart (Page 95) in the textbook, then check the answers in the whole class.
Highlight key phrases and explain with real examples:
1 suffer from: Many people suffer from eye problems because of poor medical conditions.
2 afford to do sth: He can't afford to go to hospital because he is very poor.
3 on board: All the doctors and nurses on board the plane are volunteers.
4 benefit from: Local doctors benefit from the training of Orbis.
5 carry on with: We need more money to carry on with the charity work.
(3) Deep Reading
Ask students to read again and answer the following questions to deepen understanding:
Q1: Why does Orbis use a plane as a hospital?
Q2: How does Orbis help more people in poor areas besides doing operations?
Q3: What does Orbis need to carry on with its work?
Step 3: Deep Dive
Discussion
Ask the whole class to discuss:
Q1: What kind of person is Dr Ma? What words can you use to describe him? (kind, dedicated, helpful)
Q2: Why is it important for Orbis to train local doctors and nurses?
Q3: What can we do to support Orbis' work?
Step 4: Consolidation
Let students complete the thank-you letter (Page 96) with the correct form of the words, and check the answers to consolidate the key vocabulary .
IV. Homework
Read the interview aloud three times and try to retell the work of Orbis in your own words (at least 6 sentences).
Memorize the key vocabulary and phrases in this lesson.
Write a short paragraph (60-70 words) about What I think of Orbis' work.
